Never stop learning could be the mantra of the students in The Knowledge Exchange, sponsored by Governors State University. Classes are offered for adults on a wide range of topics. Registration for winter classes begins on December 17. Classes begin on January 18 and are held Fridays, from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 3 p.m. Course offerings include history classes focusing on the ancient empires and the wives of Henry VIII, cinema studies of stage plays turned into movies, and investigations into the Great Decisions of recent international affairs and life in the Soviet Union in the twenties and thirties. The Knowledge Exchange is a continuation of the former Adult Learning Exchange (T.A.L.E.) with the same focus – to continue to offer unique and diverse non-credited courses at a reasonable price ($73.00 per class, $28 for an additional class). Classes are designed for participants aged 55 years and over and provide a relaxed and friendly environment, open to shared learning, and the free exchange of opinions and ideas. Classes are peer-led by a community of dedicated volunteers including GSU faculty and many former Exchange students. Call Suzanne Patterson in the Office of Continuing Education at 708.534.4393 to request more information or to register. Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois, 60484.

Question: How can I be sure that the toys I buy as holiday gifts are safe to use? Answer: You are right to be concerned. In 2011 alone, there were at least 28 toy recalls representing 3.8 million units, according to World Against Toys Causing Harm, Inc. The Illinois Attorney General’s Safe Shopping Guide lists items which have been recalled within the past year, including toys with lead paint, dolls that present choking hazards, and items such as defective chairs and strollers. Parents whose children may have been harmed by unsafe toys have legal rights and can seek damages through an attorney for injuries sustained. Question: I plan to do a lot of my holiday shopping online. How can I be sure that my credit card and other personal information I provide is secure? Answer: To protect yourself, use only legitimate websites with an address that begins with “https://” rather than “http://” and make sure there is a closed yellow padlock on the site. If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of an online merchant, you can check their background at one of the online consumer review sites. During the holidays when there are typically more purchases, examine your credit card and bank statements regularly for possible incidents of fraud or errors.

Question: Like many people, I signed a consumer product agreement without reading the fine print. If I end up having a problem with the product or contract, would I be able to file a lawsuit? Answer: Signing a consumer product agreement usually prevents the purchaser from filing a lawsuit. Often these agreements have clauses that leave consumers with only one legal option – mandatory arbitration. Many of these contracts favor the companies providing them and have limitations on the damages that can be awarded. For more information about Illinois law, visit www. illinoislawyerfinder.com.
