Random Reads BRANDI SMITS Through the Woods By Emily Carroll Throughout our lives, we have hea rd severa l stor ies t hat include spooky, creepy woods. No matter the circumstances or t he people involved, t here is one t hing t hat remains constant during the course of our lives; don’t go into the woods. The warnings are clear. The directions are simple. Just don’t go in there. Yet time after time, they enter the woods anyway. T hat ’s w hat Ca r rol l has created for us. This g raph ic novel tel ls t he stor y of f ive d i f ferent protagonists. All of them were told warnings about the woods. They heard rumors about the danger t hat l ives w it h i n t he tree line. That does not stop t hese people from experiencing terror in one way or another. Carroll tells her horror-filled tales through this collection of short stories as a graphic novel. Each story uses a different art technique. Some are very stark, with

litt le color. Ot hers are drawn more like a cartoon. There are those that are downright frightening. All of them are engaging. Pick up Through the Wo o d s a n d h e a r t h e stories of sisters trying to survive while their father is missing, a young bride in an arranged married whose new husba nd is not what he seems, the t r ut h behind a n attack in t he woods involv ing brothers, two friends with a ghost ly secret, a nd a sullen girl who discovers her brother’s wife is not all that meets the eye. T hrough the Wood s is a u n ique concept, combining a graphic novel with several short stories. The stories a re enough to rattle the reader, but keep her wonder ing what happened a f ter the book cover closes. I highly recommend t his book, even to those who are not fans of graphic novels. The stories are reminiscent of the spooky campfire and sleepover stories from childhood.
