DUANE MUHAMMAD Imagine if you’re having a discussion and someone said this of the opinion that you hold near and dear. You wouldn’t like it at all. Well, we say this when we carry on a dialogue and we discount the other person’s opinion.

L ately I’ve w it nessed people not being able to have civil discourse among themselves. Before the person who has the f loor can complete their thought, he or she is being cut off with no regard.

Maybe I’m old fashioned but I was taught to never interrupt a person speaking when they’re trying to express themselves. I’m sure it happens in many relationships and the impass the couples have is that there is no communication. You think t here i s c om mu n ic at ion w hen t wo people talk to each other? Yes and no. If I’m transmitting a message to you and you listen unencumbered you respond based on what you heard and then I do the same. But if you’re biting at the bit half listening and can hardly wait until I finish to tell me better then do we really have good communication? Sometimes we really don’t care about the other persons thoughts especially if those thoughts don’t agree with ours. It comes through in the discourse of conversation and argument.

I recently spoke to a group of people upon their invitation. One of the topics was respecting each other and having a meaningful, lawful dialogue. During my talk I expressed to the group the deep division that is exhibited in the Village Hall of Dolton between the Mayor and some Trustees. My nine year old daughter attends these meetings with me most of the time. I told the group I was addressing t hat my daug hter ask s me a f ter t he meeting, “Daddy, why do they hate each other?”

A s I ex pla i ned t he a nswer to my daughter reiterating to my audience I

began to choke up because it still hurts me to see people who have much in common but yet there is angst, strife and total disrespect toward each other. My response to her was, “They are not handling their disagreements in an adult manner. And just because people are adult in age does not mean they handle disagreement in an adult manner”.

In order for people to improve in their communication skills they have to learn to first listen. Listen with respect to the ot her fellows expression. To improve listening you have to listen without being ready to pounce on them because they’ve said something you disagree. How do you express your disagreement? I’ve listened to what you’ve said and I must respectfully disagree with you. But if you agree with most or even some of what the other party is saying why not start off by saying, “I agree with much of what you’re saying but I must respectfully disagree with you on this particular point.”

I believe when you come back with agreement its a little easier for the other party to digest the disagreement coming from you. Now, I know its not that easy to turn on a dime and change from the way you handle disagreement. But I believe if you make a conserted effort it could well work for you. Hard bad habits are difficult to break. But a journey of thousand miles begins with one step.

Work on the tone you take in your dialogue. How many octaves should your voice be raised? If you’re both raising your voices at each other who is the wise one and who is the fool? This is your exercise until my next column. Practice on your loved ones. It’s easier than you think because the art of conversation and argument has to be practiced and in the end can be very fulfilling.

The SSCF Scholarship Donor Drive will continue through the end of the year, providing both a charitable gift opportunity and tax-deduction for all donors.

Calumet City Participates in Veterans Parade

Veterans Appreciation Day Parade held November 8, 2014.

Calumet City elected officials turn out on a cold day to honor our veterans.

CALUMET CITY was well represented at the 1st Annual Veterans Appreciation Day Parade, Saturday November 8, 2014. The parade floats assembled at the corner of Sibley and Hohman Avenues, the center of 'downtown' Hammond and despite the cool temperatures, those honoring our Veterans generated warmth, respect and love. The parade honored US Veterans from all the major conflicts including World War 1 and 2, Korean, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Afghanistan.

Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz was joined on the Calumet City float with Alderman Ramonde D. Williams, City Clerk Nyota Figgs, City Treasurer Gerry Tarka, Economic Developer Bryan Swanson, and veterans from the Calumet City American Legion Post #330. Calu- Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush and Hammond Mayor met City participants also included members of VFW Post Thomas McDermott Jr. join together to honor veterans.

Following the parade, the two Mayors and others took to the podium at the Historic Harrison Park Band Shell to speak of the valiant sacrifices made by our men and women over the years in the armed services. They also spoke of the need to show the city's and the community's appreciation. The event concluded with an Awards Benefit Luncheon at Carpenter's Hall in Hammond. The parade aired live on WJOB Radio. As we remember Veterans Day each November 11, please take a moment to find a veteran and thank them for the freedom that we all enjoy everyday.

of 25 in the production.

The Secret Garden premiered on Broadway at t he St. Ja mes Theatre on April 25, 1991 running for 709 performances. It won the 1991 Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Daisy Eagan), and Best Scenic Design (Heidi Landesman).

Eagan at age 11 was the youngest female recipient of a Tony Award.

THE SECRET GARDEN will run Thursday, November 20; Friday, November 21; Saturday, November 22 at 7pm, and Sunday, November 23 at 2pm in Munster Auditorium.

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES On Ebay, about a year ago, I bought some old civil war letters. Letters that are over 150 years old.

When I got these letters off Ebay, I didn’t have time to research them. I carefully shoved these 150-year-old letters in the home office cubby hole. Right nex t to where I accidenta lly spill my coffee and drop c r u m b s f r om b a n a n a bre ad . A nd ver y ne a r where my kids spill pop and throw popcorn.

B u t w i t h Ve t e r a n s Day being November 11, I decided to take out these v i ntage let ters a nd do some research.

I discovered t hat these letters are from the family of Benjamin Locke.

That would be the same Benja m i n L ocke who was the Captain of the Menotomy Mi nutemen from the Revolutionar y Wa r. T hat wou ld a l so b e t he s a me C a pt a i n Benja m i n L ocke, w ho just a f ter m id n ig ht on April 19, 1775, got a knock on the door from: PAUL REVERE!!

THE BRITISH A RE COMING!” T he Capta in a lso foug ht i n t he f a mou s “Battle of Bunker Hill.”

These treasured letters that I carelessly kept near my coffee, were written t o C a pt a i n B e n j a m i n Locke’s daughter-in-law, and some were w ritten

by his grandson (by the sa me na me) Benja m i n Locke, who fea red t he “Rebs” would torch his house during t he Civ il War. The letters talk about selling the inherited Locke property.

W hen I read historic letters like these, I feel like I’m really there. I feel like I’m the one being written to. Like I’m sitting next to an oil lamp, wearing a big, poof y dress a nd a bonnet on my head. I almost think I could dip a feather and write back to dear Benjamin Locke and tell him not to sell his inheritance.

T h is Vetera n’s Day, I w i l l remember not only the veterans of the recent years, but also our country’s oldest veterans.

T he vetera ns of t he Revolutionar y War, like Captain Benjamin Locke.

And I will definitely find a more secure place for these treasured letters.

Charitable Giving Pays Off … for Everyone BOB KRYGSHELD Americans are pretty generous — in fact, 83% of us donated money to charitable organizations last year, according to a Gallup survey. And now that we’re entering the holiday season, charitable giving well may be on your mind. Your key motivation for ma k i ng cha r it able gifts, of course, is to help those organizations whose work is meaningful to you.

However, by supporting these groups, you can also make life less “taxing” for yourself.

Specifically, by making charitable contributions, you may be able to receive some valuable tax breaks.

To cla i m a deduct ion, t h ou g h , y ou n e e d t o itemize your ta xes, and you need to make sure that the organization you’re supporting is qualified, from a tax-deductibility s t a n d p o i n t . I f y o u’r e unsure whether a group is qualified, just ask to see its letter from the IRS. (Many organizations now post these letters on their websites.)

H e r e ’s h o w t h e charitable tax deduction works: If you give $200 to a qua l i f ied cha r it y, and you’re in the 25% tax bracket, you can deduct $200, with a tax benefit of $50, when you file your 2014 taxes. Consequently, t he net “cost” of you r donation is just $150 ($200 minus the $50 tax savings).

Of course, you a re not confined to making cash gifts. In fact, if you donate certain types of noncash assets, you may be able to increase your tax benefits.

Suppose you give $1,000 wor t h of stock in A BC Company to a charitable group. If you’re in the 25% bracket, you’ll be able to deduct $250 when you file your ta xes. A nd by donating the ABC stock, you can avoid paying the capital gains ta xes that would be due if you had eventually sold the stock yourself.

Keep in mind that if you want to deduct your contributions for the 2014 ta x year, you’ll need to make your gifts by Dec. 31. One more reminder:

Retain your paper work.

If you made gifts totaling over $250 to any single cha r it y — or nonca sh cont r ibut ions of a ny items worth over $500 — the IRS requires written acknowledgments for your contributions.

If you want to take a longer-term approach to charitable giving, while incorporating your gifts in planning for your estate, you might want to consider establishing a charitable remainder trust. Under this arrangement, you’d place some assets, such as stocks or real estate, into a trust, which could then use these assets to pay you a lifetime income stream.

W hen you establish the trust, you may be able to re c eive a n i m me d iate ta x deduction based on t he cha r itable g roup’s “remainder interest” — the amount the charity is likely to ultimately receive.

(This figure is determined by an IRS formula.) Upon you r de at h, t he t r u st w ou ld r e l i nq u i s h t he remaining assets to the charitable organization you’ve named. This type of trust can be complex, so to create one, you’ll need to work with your tax and legal advisors.

While the tax benefits associated with charitable giving are significant, they shou ld not, u lt imately, drive your gifting dec i sion s. You shou ld also consider the effect your gift will have on the other areas of your estate considerations — so make sure you communicate your plans to your family members.

In any case, though, be as generous as you can this holiday season and in the years to come.

What’s Your Big Idea?

Q u a nt u m physicists are constantly questioning t his, a long with many other as of yet u n k now n qua nda r ies of the universe. In fact, they have evidenced that a multitude of universes, perhaps many more than we c a n i mag i ne, ex ist simultaneously, and that ours is but a proverbial d rop i n a n ocea n of universes.

I’ve recent ly read in “The Grand Design”, by Stephen Haw k i ng a nd Leonard Mlodinow, that somewhere in Italy, it is illegal to keep a fish in a curved bowl. All fish must be kept in bowls without concavity or convexities.

T he rea son bei ng is because the curvature of the bowl distorts the fish’s perception of reality upon looking through the glass to t he outside world… which is considered to be cruelty to the fish. This is a miniaturization of scale to another unsolved mystery that plagues the minds of scientists: Could we be within some sort of giant cur ved bowl, distorting ou r ow n percept ion of reality? So far it has been impossible to tell.

Many of these scientists also believe that there is no such thing as free will, that we are all on a predetermined path and we are simply following the only steps of which we are capable. I disagree

with this. I believe we do have f ree w i l l to ma ke ou r o w n d e c i s i on s . I believe we can affect the direction of our own lives and even that of others.

I think within each one of us is a unique set of things we love to do, as well as things we dislike.

Each of us has the power to choose to do that which we love, yet most do not.

T he quest ion beckons : Why not? Perhaps we do not perceive ou rselves wor t hy…or perhaps we perceive our passion to be too r isk y. I counter t hat t h i n k i ng w it h : Is not follow ing your true passion and condemning you rsel f to a l i fe of med iocr it y a nd subpar happiness instead of soaring like an eagle and enjoying your life to the fullest not more risky than at least attempting to live your dreams? Is surviving in sadness more appealing than struggling in bliss?

These are the questions one must ask and answer for one’s self.

Ever y day we a re bombarded with myriad of choices, some simple a nd some complex. We u lt i mately become t he sum of ever y choice we have made throughout our lifetime. In this manner, we are self-creating within the context of our lifespan.

SIDKEY FAMILY AT AUNT SALLY ’S: Dropping by for a visit, the senior Sidkeys’ Char and Dennis Sr. are pictured here with son Denny Jr. at the venerable Aunt Sally’s on Burnham Avenue in Calumet City. The popular breakfast and lunch eatery was packed the day N 2 N visited as Char and Denny Sr. made the rounds of table after table of locals and regulars (the Calumet City Mayor and police and firefighters) who frequent for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant has been at that location for three generations. COLUMBA: During the Sunday November 2, 2014 Memorial Mass for the deceased members of St. Columba, Chicago (Hegewisch), the Knights added dignity and respect to the event. GET WELL WISHES TO KEN TEASE OF CALUMET CITY: Ken, the longtime owner and proprietor of Harold Tease and Son, garden implements recently underwent serious back surgery which makes his tenure at the 75 year old family owned establishment no longer probable. Wife Patsy notes that they will soon be selling off all the inventory (lawn mowers, snow blowers and the like) and moving permanently to Las Vegas where they also have a home. She also recalls how Ken, now, 76, remembers when River Oaks Drive (159th Street) was a dirt road long before the advent of the River Oaks shopping Center and all the stores and businesses built up there in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90s. In addition to being the 2nd generation Tease in the garden business, Ken is also a longtime, in demand, entertainer, musician and accompanist in the Chicago area and Las Vegas. The popular couple have a wide circle of friends both in the Chicago/Calumet City area and Las Vegas and their friends here in the Region will miss them.
