In 2014, the Towle Theater launched a new project called “All-American Sweethearts, A Salute to the Andrews Sisters” on New Year’s Eve. Since then, the production has been touring. Lord, Lord!

ANNA M. CAISON I once preached a sermon that got me kicked out the church. The message God gave me to speak on that fateful day centered around a key principle taught by the Apostle John in one of his epistles.

This scripture is what I call the litmus test of the church’s agape Love, the kind of love God has for all of humanity. This single verse is one exa mple of what Hebrews 4:12 says about God’s Word being alive and active in the believer’s life.

It cuts through all our religious hypocrisy and false piety, and exposes the true intentions of our heart.

Since its founding (over 100 years ago), the church boasts of its rich heritage in the continued financial support of foreign missions. The current location of the church sits in the middle of an impoverished community. W hen the discussion a rose about t he church’s missional responsibility to the needs of the community, it was vehemently rejected.

Here’s where the principle of John’s epistle comes in. It reads, “If someone says, ‘I Love God,’ and hates his brother he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” (1 John 4:20) The point is this, how can we say we

love a foreign community in need, that we can’t see, and show disregard, contempt, even hatred for a community in need that we can see? A lack of concern for a community we can see, shows that our support for a community that we can’t see, is not genuine. And because it’s not genuine, God does not count the act as being done in His name.

The same principle can be applied to the Religious Right’s support for the rights of the unborn fetus. How can we justify protecting the rights of the unborn that we can’t see, while denying those same rights to those born that we can see?

Jesus said, “Many will say to Me on that day [when I judge them], ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, and driven out demons in Your name, and done many miracles in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them publicly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me [you are banished from My presence], you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands].’”

T he ch i ld ren wou ld respond to questions and ma ke cute, r id icu lous, fo ol i s h, but h i l a r iou s remarks.

In my opinion, t here shou ld be a moder n rema ke of L i n k let ter’s program entitled “Sellers say the darndest things.”

It would give sellers the opp or t u n it y t o s h a r e the special sayings they confide to their real estate agents t hat undermine t he goa l of obt a i n i ng a sold sign in their front lawn. In my 36 years of selling homes in the south subu rbs, I have hea rd some doozies.

For e x a m p l e , I w a s recently asked to market a proper t y for a sel ler t hat rema i ned u n sold after a six-month effort from another broker. The seller presented me with a n acc u rate appra i sa l from a recent deal that fell apart. The appraisal on the property came in at a value of 30K less than their list price. The seller sa id t hey wou ld lower t he list price 10K af ter speaking to their daughter in New Jersey. Do you find that as amusing as I do?

Yet, they don’t have to sell!

Another popular phrase from sellers is “I’m not going to give my house away.” Seasoned agents know that this seller will not accept and reasonable offers prior to spending time and money on the marketing effort. So you see, sometimes sellers do say the darndest things.

How Should You Use Retirement Plan Distributions?

• Medium-term income bucket – During ret i rement, you ca n probably never have too many sources of income, so you may want to fill a bucket with intermediatea nd long-ter m bond s, wh ich ma ke reg u la r interest payments.

• L ong-ter m i nc ome bucket — Even w hen you’re retired, you will need some grow t h potential in your portfolio to help keep you ahead of inflation in the long run.

So this bucket should be filled, not surprisingly, w it h g r ow t h- or ient e d invest ments. These investments can fluctuate in value, but as long as you don’t need to tap into them in a hurry, you may be able to avoid taking w it hd rawa ls when t he price is down.

I n a d d it ion t o t h i s “bucket” approach, you do have other options for your RMDs. Or, you could contribute to a college-savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan, for your grandchildren. Clearly, you can do a lot with your RMDs. And you worked hard for them – so make sure they work just as hard for you.

During your work ing years, you are (hopefully) putting money into your I R A a nd y ou r 4 01( k ) or s i m i l a r e m p l o y e rs p on s or e d r et i r ement pla n. But once you’ve ret i re d, how c a n you maximize the benefits you get from these plans?

First of all, you need to be aware of the rules governing w it hdrawa ls f rom you r ret i rement plans. If you are older than 59½, you can withdraw money from your traditional IR A without paying penalties, though t he w it hd r a w a l s w i l l typically be taxable. But once you reach 70½, you generally must start taking “requ i red m i n i mu m d ist r ibut ions” (R MDs) f r om t he s e ac c ou nt s, with the annual amount determined by your age, t he accou nt ba la nce and other factors. (The situation is different with a Roth IRA. If you are the original account holder, you are not required to withdraw funds from your Roth IRA at any age. You can choose to withdraw your contributions at any t i me, ta x a nd pena lt y free. To w ithdraw your earnings tax and penalty free, you generally must have owned the account for at least five years and have reached age 59½.)

So, assuming you do have a traditional IRA and a 401(k) or similar plan, what should you do with the RMDs? You’ll probably require at least some of t hese dist ribut ions for your living expenses, but if you don’t need it all, what should you do with the “excess”?

Here’s one suggestion: As part of your overall ret i rement i nvest ment portfolio strategy, you can reinvest the money into these three “buckets”: • Near-term income bucket – For this bucket, you’re not concerned with high

However, the sellers turned the gas and electricity off the day we were scheduled to close. This was before a weekend, with cold, snow y nights, and the utilities were off for several days. The broker told us the sellers did not have to leave the utilities on after we did our final “walk-through?” Do you agree?

Answer: W hen you buy a propert y it must be delivered to you at closing in substantially the same condition as it was on the day the offer was accepted, perhaps 30 to 60 days earlier.

It’s common for closing dates to change.

For sellers, the best approach is to keep utilities on until title actually changes hands because the cost of utilities for a few additional days is minimal and the potential for damage in some climates can be large.

If there’s damage to the property as a result of discontinued utilities then you should ask an attorney to review the matter. So, if we cannot avoid such circumstances, Skoczylas suggests we learn to take individual responsibility for our own safety.
