Question: How does Illinois law compare to other states with regards to owning firearms? Answer: In Illinois, the possession and purchase of firearms is contingent upon an individual obtaining a Firearms Owner’s Identification Card, or FOID. Most other states do not require this type of ID card. However, the registration of firearms is not required by Illinois statute except in the city of Chicago which requires that any type of firearm must be registered. Question: What laws apply to parents who want to implement a home schooling program? Answer: Children from ages 7-17 can be home schooled. Parents must provide 176 days of instruction in the English language in the same “branches of education” that children of “corresponding” age and grade receive in public school. The statute identifies the branches of education as language arts, math, biological, physical and social sciences, fine arts, and physical development and health. Question: Our company is considering an employee holiday party in December. What should we know in order to protect ourselves from any legal liabilities? Answer: The traditional holiday party can be a great way to improve morale and make employees feel appreciated. But there are legal liabilities associated with hosting a social event at work. The areas of greatest legal exposure, according to the Society for Human Resource Management, are inappropriate jokes, vulgar language, sexual harassment and excessive alcohol consumption. The latter two categories have perhaps the greatest implications for employer liability. To minimize its risk, a company should have a sexual harassment policy in place and be knowledgeable about the laws related to drinking and host liability. Every situation is different. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month JUDY WIATROWSKI During the month of October we are offering 50% off a single session class for anyone who shows proof of a mammogram that is no older than a year. Our single sessions are $12 so you would pay $6. You are also invited to bring a friend who is not currently a member of our studio and they too can do any single Yoga class for $6. One session per person. Call 219-789-0237 to register. Mammography is a low dose x-ray that can detect breast cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt. According to research out of Barcelona, Spain, better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed the occurrence of breast cancer. Many experts are now saying that diet and physical activity also play a part in preventing this disease. The International Agency for Research on Cancer estimates that between 25 to 30 percent
of breast cancer could be avoided if women were thinner and exercised more. Monthly self-exams and annual check-ups are also important to help prevent this disease. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation: -Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women and the leading cause of death in women 40-55. -50% of breast cancer is diagnosed in women over 65. -For every 100 women with breast cancer, one male will develop it. -70% of all breast cancers are found through breast self-exams.
