Illinois Law Now!
Question: My aging parents were exploited financially by an unscrupulous lender. What Illinois laws are in place to protect the elderly? Answer: Twelve new state laws were recently enacted to help protect seniors from financial or physical harm. They include giving prosecutors a new way to combat financial exploitation of older citizens and ensuring that financial agreements don’t conflict with a person’s power of attorney. Among the new laws is one that lets prosecutors freeze the assets of a person charged with financially taking advantage of a senior. Question: Can local schools use EpiPens to treat students with severe allergies without fear of liability? Answer: Because of the high number of students who have food allergies, schools are now legally allowed to stock and dispense life-saving epinephrine shots. Question: What are the parameters of the new federal program which allows immigrant youths to obtain work permits and driver’s licenses? Answer: Under a federal program called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, undocumented youths now have a chance to obtain work permits and driver’s licenses. They must have been under the age of 16 when they entered the U.S., and 30 years old or younger as of June 15, 2012. In addition, they must have lived in the U.S. for five years continuously since at least June 15, 2007, be attending school, be a high school graduate or have a GED, or have been honorably discharged from the military. They cannot have a felony conviction, been convicted of three or more misdemeanors, or otherwise be considered a public safety threat. Knowledge Exchange Classes Begin at GSU
The Office of Continuing Education at Governors State University is pleased to announce the opening session of its new program, The Knowledge Exchange. The fall session begins on September 21 with classes on Fridays, from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 3 p.m. Course offerings include a wide range of classes from Civic Engagement to Play Reading to Cinema Studies, and the Supreme Court, and Topics in Science. The Knowledge Exchange is a continuation of the former Adult Learning Exchange (T.A.L.E.) with the same focus – to continue to offer unique and diverse non-credited courses at a reasonable price ($73 per class, $28 for an additional class). Classes are designed for participants aged 55 years and over and provide a relaxed and friendly environment, open to shared learning, and the free exchange of opinions and ideas. Classes are peer-led by a community of dedicated volunteers including GSU faculty and alumni, and many former Exchange students. Call the Office of Continuing Education at (708) 534-4099 to request more information or to register. Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois, 60484.
