Illinois Law Now!
Question: Can a business owner be arrested for failing to have the proper business licenses? Answer: Under state law, a business owner who operates his or her business without the proper license can be charged with committing a felony and even arrested. Most violators, however, are ticketed and required to pay a fine. Question: What are my rights if I believe I have been discriminated against? Answer: Civil rights laws protect an individual from discrimination and oppression based on age, gender, race, ethnicity and other protected classes. Civil rights laws also protect an individual’s right to speech, assembly and religion. Illinois residents who believe their civil rights have been violated may want to consult with a lawyer. Question: I’m getting ready to meet with a lawyer to create an estate plan for passing on my assets to family members. How should I prepare for the first meeting? Answer: Typically, the initial meeting with a lawyer is educational. In this instance, you’ll want to come away with a clear idea of the next steps for creating an estate plan. However, ask your lawyer in advance about what to expect during the meeting and whether he or she charges for the first consultation. For more information about Illinois law, visit www. illinoislawyerfinder.com. If you have a legal question, send it to illinoislawcolumn@isba.org.

Library’s Parking Lot Reconstruction Lansing Public Library’s parking lot reconstruction begins Monday September 16, 2013 and will last 6 to 8 weeks. The entire lot will be closed and the lower entry inaccessible. The 37 year old parking lot will be completely redone and a much needed materials drive thru drop box will be added for patron convenience. Handicapped parking and ramps will be improved and you will now be able to drive through the lot not only to return materials but to drop off and pick up people to. The area will be re-landscaped adding some extra green space. We continue to work on updating our facilities for our patrons, so please excuse the inconvenience while we make improvements for you. The library asks that patrons park on School St and Indiana Ave. Two temporary handicapped spots will be added to the front of the building for a total of four handicapped spaces for patron use.
