KEVIN BRADLEY “Find the right topic, and a child doesn’t even realize they are reading,” says former teacher Karen Hutchinson; now a sales representative for Usborne Books, a U.K. based publisher of books meant to aide in developing kids’ reading habits by finding creative ways to spark their minds through educational books featuring subjects the individual child is already passionate about. Usborne doesn’t just subject children to onesize-fits-all type education; they have educational books in hundreds of subjects, so the individual child can choose whatever uniquely interests them. They currently hold over 1400 titles and add about 40 annually. Currently a resident of St. John, Indiana; Karen has had a life-long love of reading herself. She delights in seeing kids choose a book that they are really excited about, or helping an adult choose the perfect book for a child. Knifty Knitters Knit Hats for Homeless

Knifty Knitters originated on March 20, 2012. A dear lady from Munster Christian Reformed Church named, Helen Jeeninga, passed away last year. Her family donated all of her remaining yarn she once used to make baby afghans for the sick children in the hospitals and other various places. This started a new ministry at Munster Church called Knifty Knitters, who are now on a mission of making hats for the needy and the homeless. This group started out with approximately 9 ladies and quickly grew to 21 ladies. We use a quick and easy tool called the “Knifty Knitter” which enables someone like myself who doesn’t know how to knit make beautiful hats. Our group has now finished over 750 hats of various sizes from adult to infant for the needy and homeless in just over 3 months. The ladies love getting together every Tuesday after our morning “Coffee Break” Bible study to make these lovely hats, chatting and getting to know each other better. One of our knitters, a recent widow, expressed to me that making these hats was such a God sent to her. The making of these hats is as much a blessing to the group as we hope our beautiful hats will be to the recipients. Each hat has its own label that the ladies sign with their first name that reads “Made for you with love and a prayer by _____________.” We are always looking for new

Residents Enjoy Food & Festivities at Taste of Thornton Township

Families and friends gathered together for a festive end of summer celebration at the annual Taste of Thornton Township last week. Presented by the township’s Human Relations Commission, the event offers a variety of food, and free entertainment and activities for all ages and showcases local restaurants and vendors. This year’s event was headlined by The Chi-Lites. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli said the family-friendly event is designed to bring the community together emphasizing its importance in uniting the community and celebrating diversity. In addition to the food and music there were clowns, visits by Dora the Explorer, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Ernie and others. Children enjoyed free rides and face painting. Bingo was also offered. Entertainment also included the Mexican Folklore Dancers, Ronald McDonald, a Whitney Houston tribute by Sherie Yvette, Michael Jackson Tribute by Rico, and the Motown sound of Past Life. Emcee for the event was Darryl King, from WYCA-FM & Soul. This was the first time South Holland resident Winston Nartey and his family attended the event. “It’s a wonderful event for families,” Nartey said. Their daughter, Jayden, age 5, enjoyed face painting and the rides. Model and Chicago resident Sherie Yvette delighted the audience with her portrayal of the late Whitney Houston. Yvette who was told she looked like Houston learned to lip sync and a friend helped transform her look. She began winning lookalike contests, started portraying Houston in 1991. She has traveled around the world. “Doing the tribute now is bittersweet. I wanted to show all the sides of her music,” she said. “I really enjoyed the Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson impersonator performances said Lansing resident Loretta Galido who came with her grandchildren. “This is a great free family event with a lot of activities for the children,” she said. The antique car rides were also a big hit. Homer Dillard, a member of the Human Relations Commission said they’re always jammed. Children were all smiles as they rode in the 1901 Olds, 1932 Ford and Dune Buggy. During this year’s event the township announced the recipients of their newly created Thornton Township Youth Scholarship awarded to two high school graduates – Nia Mack of South Holland and John Arrington Jr. of Harvey. Each will receive a $2,500 scholarship. Mack’s mother, Natalie who accepted the award on behalf of her daughter thanked the township for the support. Both students are attending the University of Illinois in Champaign.

A cheering crowd was on hand to welcome The Chi-Lites who performed their hits as well as songs from other popular artists. The township also recognized Marshall Thompson, the only remaining original member of the group with a special birthday cake and Happy Birthday song from the audience. “Everyone really enjoyed themselves. The Chi-Lites were a great hit. They really performed for us and interacted with the audience. I walked around and sampled quite a bit of the food and it all tasted good. I look forward to doing more things like this in the future,” Supervisor Zuccarelli said.

Don Velasquez who lives in the senior housing complex in Calumet City is a regular attendee. “I love the entertainment and I love to dance,” he said. Velasquez who is undergoing chemotherapy said he always looks forward to the Taste of Thornton Township. “It is important to enjoy life because you never know what is going to happen tomorrow,” he said. Lansing resident Vera Jackson who operates Vera’s Unique Designs was one of the vendors. She has been making jewelry and embroidered items for 20 years and has been taking part in taste for 10 years. She started making items for her grandchildren and then began participating at craft shows where she met Vera McDonald and now the two participate together in shows in the region. Faye and Towon Morris of South Holland offered a free hand spa treatment for those in attendance. The couple runs an online business called Essentially Yours. “We love being here. It’s a great event with great people,” Faye Morris said. “I love to sample all the food,” added Dolton resident Alice Shelton. Dolly McGiniston enjoyed the entertainment and in particular looked forward to seeing the Chi-Lites. Referring to Shelton, McGiniston said, “I even made a new friend.” Supervisor Zuccarelli told those in attendance that it is important to come out and make new friends and get to know each other. He urged attendees to support the sponsors and vendors who are local businesses. Knowing God Through Fellowship Anna M. Caison What is fellowship, and how does one have fellowship with God? What does fellowship look like among Christians? Fellowship is a deep, intimate sharing of one another’s life. For the Christian it is sharing in God’s life as He has shared in our life through Christ. And it is through personal fellowship with God that we enter into corporate fellowship with other believers. Our fellowship with one another is seen when we emulate God’s personal fellowship with us. Often times we mistake “socializing” for fellowship. Socializing is a coming together under the guise of getting to know one another where the conversation centers on job titles, marital status, where one lives, how many children/grandchildren one has, hobbies, sports, etc. Superficial relationships are then formed based on these external similarities. Biblical Fellowship is deeper, much deeper---it looks beyond the external and sees the true person, a son (daughter) of God. Regardless of our inconsistencies, differences, faults and shortcomings, we see and relate to one another as God’s child, our brother (sister) whom Christ died for. As we continue to grow in grace and

DREAMS DO COME TRUE THE BARACK OBAMA LEARNING CENTER August 19, 2012- hHistory was made in Phoenix, Illinois with the Grand Opening of The Barack Obama Learning Center. The Village of Phoenix has the distinction of having the first public building in the Nation named after our 44th President. Twenty five years ago it was just a dream; today it is reality thanks to the tri-partnership of the School District 151, the Phoenix Public Library Board of Trustees and the Village of Phoenix. At the ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, the room was filled with Phoenix residents, elected officials, and supporters of the proud Village of Phoenix. The Master of Ceremony was Phoenix Honorable Mayor Terry R. Wells. The program began with a prayer by Reverend Tyrone Coleman.

Mrs. Martina Mahaffey, Phoenix Library Board Trustee told the audience that in April 1987, the residents of Phoenix voted to establish The Phoenix Public Library Board of Trustees. The purpose of the Board was to provide library Services to all residents of the Village. Soon after, in 1988, the Library Board entered in a contract with the Harvey Public Library which allowed village residents to obtain a Library card and have full access to Harvey’s library and its services. Even though the goal of providing library services to the residents was fulfilled, board members still longed for “our own.” A Library room was established in the William Hawkins Multi-Purpose Center where students could come and check out books. With the help of the Village of Phoenix, two computers labs were set-up, one for students and one for the adults. Mahaffey said “Board members continued to dream and their discussions began to change to why can’t we have our own library.” About four years ago, library trustees began spending their Saturday mornings visiting different libraries throughout the state, gathering ideas and support. Following those trips, the foundation of a tri-partnership library came to be. Mrs. Mahaffey said “For some residents this is a dream come true, while other’s never dared to dream.” The Barack Obama Learning Center is a welcome addition to the community as well as to the students of District 151. It will provide library services to all the residents of Phoenix. The “Dream Maker”, Dr. Douglas C. Hamilton, former School District Superintendent was brought to the podium by Mayor Terry R. Wells with a hearty round of applause. Mayor Wells say Dr. Hamilton attends and supports every event in Phoenix. The Mayor named him an honorary citizen. Dr. Hamilton and his wife pledged a thousand dollars a year to the library. He encouraged everyone to support the library monetarily; the library still needs books, staffing and upkeep. Mrs. Loretta Wells, Vice-President of the Library Board and First Lady of Phoenix, said “She was so excited and this was a long time coming.” Mrs. Jessica Buckner, President of the School District 151 Board, “Thank you to everyone for coming, making this celebration a full circle.” Dr. Theresa Hill, the new Superintendent of School District 151 said “… it is an honor to work with this wonderful community. And the cutting of the ribbon is the beginning of the race, a race of endurance. Everyone must support the library, the community and the children. We must make sure our children are successful, spur imagination and allow for hopes and dreams to come true.” State Representative William “Will” Davis was thanked for his part in making this possibility a reality. Mayor Wells said “If there is any money around State Rep. Davis will find it.” State Representative Davis is committed to bringing more resources to the library, to the Village of Phoenix and surrounding communities. Many elected officials came out to share this historical day with the Village of Phoenix; Judge Carl Boyd, Dixmoor Mayor Keevan Grimmett, Robbins TrusThe Barack Obama Learning Center ribbon cutting was attended by many dignitaries tee Tyrone Ward, Harvey Aldermans Joseph Whittington and Shirley Derwinski, Burnham Mayor Robert Polk, SSC Board President Don Manning and former Mayor January Belmont. Everyone went outside to view the ribbon cutting and Mr. Lanell Gilbert, School District 151 Board Member prayed for the Blessing of the Building. The ribbon was cut, the library doors open and the tour began. The building had that new car smell, everything was so tastefully done. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zucarrelli led everyone in a toast, to the Village Of Phoenix, District School Board 151 and Phoenix Public Library District congratulating them on this monumental accomplishment. This is the first time in history that these three entities came together and join forces for one specific cause. This tri-partnership was responsible for making this dream come true.

Superintendent Takes the Bus to School with Thornton Students Classes started this week at Thornton Township High School—where approximately 1800 students returned to school for the 2012-2013 academic year. For students riding the bus to school, a special visitor was waiting at the bus stop to greet each of the students. Thornton Township High School District 205 Superintendent, Mr. John F. Thomas, joined the students for their ride to school. Mr. Thomas, just like the students, was all smiles when he stepped off the bus. “It was a wonderful experience to share the morning ride with our students,” he said. “I was able to join the boys and girls in their anticipation, nervousness and enthusiasm—we want to make sure our buses are running on time and properly.” This is a new day in District 205. We are student centered and data driven. Riding the buses, eating in the cafeteria, and attending classes are part of the on-going data collection efforts to improve our schools.

Classes will begin in Spring, 2013 for doctoral students aspiring to leadership positions in four areas of concentration: school superintendent in preschool to 12th grade; higher education administration; not-for-profit leadership; and public safety leadership. GSU’s new doctorate was approved August 20 by the Institutional Actions Council, a decision-making body of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The HLC is the regional accrediting agency for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Ed.D. in Interdisciplinary Leadership is unique in Illinois. The doctoral program, which offers a mix of online and on-campus courses, was designed by faculty, administration, and staff from GSU’s four Colleges: Education, Arts and Sciences, Health and Human Services, and Business and Public Administration. It will be taught by faculty representing a wide range of academic disciplines at the university. “Many thanks to the faculty, staff, and administration who have created GSU’s fifth doctoral program,” said President Elaine P. Maimon. “Five years ago, at my installation as president, I challenged the university to take a new look at leadership and to create a doctoral program that embodies 21st century principles. Obnoxious Kids, Dogs, and Tour Guides mike buder It’s usually best for homeowners to be absent during showings, the next best thing is to go for a walk when buyers arrive. Not a good idea to have your kid playing piano for “mood music” or to have your “show dogs” running around nipping heals. Every so often we run into a listing that simply has us walking away shaking our heads – Is it that sellers don’t listen or that they just want to do things their way? PIANO BOY: Anyone that attempts to tackle any musical instrument gets a salute from me, but there’s a time and a place for everything. Walking through a home with interested buyers is not that time. Despite my repeated suggestions that little Timmy ice down his fingers, we were subject to “over the rainbow” for what seemed like a 30 minute loop. Timmy was into it; perfect posture, hand and head positions and he missed that same note every time he came to it. We started at flabbergasted, moved to a little annoyed and left laughing. Not at Timmy, but at his stage mom who for some reason felt that we were an audience instead of buyers looking at the house. ANKLE BITERS: I know Precious and Sparky are great dogs, but not everyone wants to be accosted by them. Showing a home one day we were peppered the entire time by two Maltese dogs that kept nipping at the buyer’s feet and pant cuff. Dogs sense vulnerability and these two were enjoying the adventure – not so for the buyers. THANKS, WE’LL

FIGURE IT OUT: Does anyone need a tour guide for a home? Maybe the White House or the Vatican…but is one needed for a 1,200 square foot bungalow? And ridiculous as hearing “… and here’s the kitchen…” is having to stop everything to hear every painful and excruciating detail of what amounts to a standard sink, faucet or light fixture. Owners should be proud of their home, but be confident that agents and buyers coming through will recognize that and figure out which room is which. Fact sheets are fine, tour guides (especially owners and/or their kids) are not. Working full time in real estate since 1981 I’ve been in several thousand homes. I know that experienced agents and focused buyers have a systematic approach to recognizing if a home is appealing and is going to work. I know that within minutes of getting on site, a decision has been made as to whether or not a particular home “strikes a nerve”. Serious buyers know what they want. Sellers shouldn’t complicate things…it’s best to leave and let the agent and buyer evaluate your home alone. At the very least, take Precious and Sparky for a walk. The Silent Killer riley rogers Hypertension, you may know it as high blood pressure. One in every four adults, some 50 million people in the USA alone have high blood pressure. But many people are unaware that they have the condition. Untreated hypertension increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. These are the first and third most common causes of death in the USA. Hypertension can also damage the kidneys and increase the risk of blindness and dementia. That is why hypertension is referred to as the “silent killer.” Everyone is at risk from high blood pressure. However, the elderly tend to have a different hypertension profile compared to younger people. What is Hypertension? High blood pressure is easy to diagnose because all that is involved is taking one’s blood pressure. If you have blood pressure over 140/90, that is either a systolic (first number) of 140 or more or a diastolic (second number) of 90 or more, or a combination of the two, then hypertension exists. This is a disease that may not show any symptoms. This means that the only way to detect it is to have your blood pressure taken by a nurse, physician or another knowledgeable person, including yourself. Because there a very few symptoms, if any, and it is prevalent in older people, you should have your blood pressure checked regularly.

Why is blood pressure important? Simply put, high blood pressure kills. It kills by contributing to coronary heart disease and precipitating strokes. It is one of the very few risk factors for either of these potentially lethal or debilitating diseases that is treatable. Because blood pressure is treatable and because so many Americans who are hypertensive and are being treated, this is why many believe that the death rate has declined over time from coronary heart disease and stroke in this country. Patients who are treated significantly lower their chance of having a stroke or heart attack. Treatment of Hypertension The most important aspect of treating hypertension is checking one’s blood pressure regularly. Your doctor will work with you closely to make recommendations regarding treatment and medication that is right for you. Certain life style advice will be given. Lose weight, stop smoking, change your diet, limit your alcohol, reduce your salt intake and of course exercise. Why The $200 Billion Difference? WOODROW Wilcox In 2010, the “Obamacare” health care reform law was passed without any serious public scrutiny of the 2000 plus pages. Remember that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi told Members of Congress that they would learn what was in the bill after they voted for it. After the bill was passed and Barrack Obama signed it, the public was able to start studying it. There were many surprises in the law which never would have been passed if the public had been allowed to study and comment on the bill before the vote. Democrats have accused Congressman Paul Ryan of wanting t o p ush gra n dma s in wheelchairs off a cliff by making some reforms with Medicare. But, it was the Democrats lead by Barrack Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi who reduced Medicare benefits for senior citizens by over half a trillion dollars. Pelosi confirmed this in an interview on CNBC on October 28, 2011 with Maria Bartiromo which I found on the internet at http://video.cnbc.com/ gallery/?video=3000054002. But, the General Accounting Office of the federal government studied the bill for two years and arrived at a different figure. In the last week of July, it reported that the

Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE alice DEVRIES Captain Vernon Caughlan was in the US Army, and worked at the 168th General Hospital stationed in France during 1944-45. The orthopedic hospital had 1,400 beds— and according Vernon’s letters—it had many tents. To sleep, go to work and use the bathroom all in tents would be difficult. At least, I know it would be for my family. My son just pitched a tent in our backyard a few weeks ago. He thought it would be “fun” to sleep out in the wild. A few hours later, I helped him carry the tent through the rain and into our garage. We are weak. Maybe my family needs boot camp. A letter from Vernon to his wife: Normandy, 13 January 45 Dear Irene: I am just fine and hope you are the same. How are you? Tonight is Saturday night and presently I am going out to the bath tent and take a shower—which I do weekly. Then I will shine my shoes and perhaps go to the second show which starts at 8:30 p.m. Then I will come back to my sleeping tent and turn in for the night. I do not have much news to write. It seems like a long time since I have seen you. I would like to see you and wish it was so I could. I miss you very much especially at night, after the day’s work is done. I hear by the radio that it has been quite cold in the Northern part of the U.S. No doubt it has been very cold in Iowa, which is a distinct contrast to the place where we formerly spent our winters. I am enjoying the Fanny Farmer candy very much. I must close for now but will write again real soon.
