Hammond’s First Bike Race Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. and the Hammond Port Authority are proud to announce Race to the Rescue, an event to honor our first responders. Head to The Pavilion at Wolf Lake on Sunday, September 11th for a day full of activities for ever yone. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:45 am, 9K run at 8 am, 5k run/walk immediately following the 9k, kids races, 20-mile cycling road race at 10 am, 9k fun bike ride at 1pm, family activities, raffles, and more! Golf Outing Benefit New Star, a not-for-profit organization serving special needs children and adults throughout the south suburbs, is hosting its annual Fore the Future Golf Outing on Monday, September 26, at Idlewild Country Club. This year’s golf outing is unique in that it also celebrates the July 1 merger of two local organizations, SouthSTAR Services and New Hope Center, into New Star! The day will include a barbeque lunch on the terrace, 18 holes of golf, games, prizes, cocktails and a buffet dinner. All-inclusive golf packages are $175 per person, and dinneronly packages are $55 per person. Sponsorships are still available and range from $175 to $3,500. Larger sponsorships include golf or dinner packages, while others offer a variety of different marketing opportunities. Proceeds support job training and employment, daily life skills enrichment, senior care, residential services, and special recreation for over 650 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, residing in the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana. Humane Society Hosts Mum Sale Pre-orders of hardy mums are due Sept. 10 for Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA)’s mum sale fundraiser to benefit the animals of HSCA. The mums will arrive just in time for fall planting and decorating. Each hardy mum costs $10 and comes in a 9-inch pot. Colors available include red, yellow, white, purple and rust. Mums are provided by Bultema Farms.
