We Are Open The Shopper has spent the last 36 years residing at 924 E. 162nd Street in South Holland. This location is on the west side of the building on Route 6.

On Monday July 18, The Shopper moved 2 doors to the east in the same building. Now this may not seem like a very big move, but after living in one place for over 30 years a certain amount of clutter builds up. We have been busy ‘decluttering’ the items that are no longer needed to publish a modern newspaper. Computers have replaced traditional things like darkrooms, light tables, negatives, and layout paper. File cabinets are no longer needed as computer hard drives now provide storage. So we are consolidating and moving 2 doors down.

This move has made a space that is available for another long-time South Holland business. Holland Printing, another locally owned business, is moving their location to our building. Their new address will be 922 E. 162nd Street.

The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to announce a specia l guest artist exhibition titled “Graffiti aHEAD: A Documentation of Midwest Graffiti Writers,” by East Chicago artist Felix “Flex” Maldonado Jr. in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery from August 28th through October 13th. There w ill also be a closing reception for the artist at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 8th. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the 4th Floor of SSC’s Main Campus.

A proud native of East Chicago, Felix is a self-taught artist with 25+ years’ experience in painting, murals and graffiti art. In 1995, he received his BFA in Advertising from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. His work has landed him at several ad agencies in Chicago directing and producing award-winning spots for companies like Culligan Water, Peoples Energy, Roto-Rooter, Head Tennis and ATA Airlines.

Felix Maldonado is an artist in every sense of the word. His passion and enthusiasm for this subject is evident in everything he makes. One particular body of work, that demonstrates many of his abilities and could quite possibly be his strongest work, is a series of portraits of graffiti artists entitled Concrete & Patching: Steps, patched correctly. “Graff iti aHead.” Feli x has chosen these people to paint because of his admiration and respect for them as graffiti artists. This comes across in the work in various ways, first and foremost the size of the works.

He creates a nonpareil perspective into t he world of portra it a rt a nd begins by sitting each subject down

for a photograph. Encouraged to pose in such a ma nner t hat represents themselves, their individualities come alive frame by frame. This initial photo session is imperative to Felix’s creative process for portraits as this is where he begins his “visual conversation.” These larger-than-life portraits command attention and respect, which Feli x bestows upon these people. The detail in the faces of the subjects is made with care but also with a spontaneous and physical manner synonymous to the medium they all use – the spray can.

Maldonado stated, “While most see a furrow of an eyebrow as just that, I see this gesture as a continuous pause in color reaction and refraction; an everchanging palate with every expression made.”

COS Student Attends Washington D.C. Conference Kaylen Ba ker, 8t h Grade student at Ch r ist Ou r Sav ior Cat hol ic School i n South Holland, recently participated in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. The program, open to students in Grades 6-8, is designed to promote leader sh ip, com mu n ic at ion, collaboration and problem solving skills that will carry these young adults throughout life. Responsibility and independence were reinforced.

Kaylen was one of 300 students from around the United States to attend the Conference that ran for 6 days and 5 nights.

The students were divided into groups of 20 students. The groups held leadership focus meetings daily to discuss American history as well as their thoughts on their experiences.

During Kaylen’s time in Washington D.C., she also visited the National Museum of American History, the National Memorials, Harpers Ferry and had exclusive access to the US Floor of the House. Kaylen had the opportunity to speak with a retired member of Congress. The group participated in a

SSC Offering Free Highway Construction Careers Training South Suburban College will be offering a Free Hig hway Const r uct ion Ca reers Training Program this fall at their Oak Forest Campus. Orientation and Assessment Testing will be August 23-25 at the Oak Forest Center, with the program set to begin on September 19, 2016.

The Hig hway Const r uct ion Ca reers Training Program has been implemented to increase the number of minorities, women, and disadvantaged individuals working on IDOT highway construction projects. The training consists of an intensive 12-week program to learn the skills necessary for acceptance into the highway construction trades and gives the opportunity for a career with high wage potential.

South Suburban College hosted its 3rd Annual Open House on Thursday, August 4th. There was fun, excitement and a large dose of enthusiasm provided by college staff. The Open House, geared toward providing College information and pathways to successful careers, saw nearly 300 persons come through its doors. Many participated in College tours and raffles. WGCI and Tone Kapone were also on campus and rounded out the fun.

Program representatives were on hand to answer questions and guide potential students with program facts and requirements. Others provided hands-on experience and technology displays that were fun as well as interesting such as a nail drive contest featured by Building and Construction and a programmable game board featured by Applied Engineering Technology.

Mrs. Ebonie Williams was recently hired by the District 205 Board to fill the principal position at Thornridge High School.

I spent a morning with Principal Williams last week, and we talked about her plans and vision for the upcoming school year.

During our conversation it was evident that Mrs. Williams is well suited for her new position. Her passion for education and her dedication to District 205 is evident in her words and actions. D205’s Director of Human Resources, Dr. Jerry B. Doss set out to involve the entire school community, and implemented the Thornridge Principal interview process.

“Dr. Doss was a trendsetter in this process,” Principal Williams remarked. “As I went through the interview process, it was evident that Dr. Doss designed the process to be open and transparent. There was an intentional emphasis on including community stakeholders such as parents, elected officials and D205 faculty in the selection of the next Thornridge principal.”

The interviews began with over 31 individuals who submitted applications. Personal interviews were the 2nd step in the process and a community forum was the final step for the applicants. At each stage the applicants were evaluated and scored according to their strengths.

“I appreciated the interview process - especially the community forum,” Principal Williams said during our conversation. “The questions asked during this forum helped me to understand the needs and goals of our school community in new ways.”

Principal Williams is not new to the District 205 community.

Previously, she was an assistant principal at Thornton High School for 9 years. Williams also taught English in the Chicago Public School system at Farragut Career Academy. Her mother is a retired CPS administrator and instilled a love of education into her children at a young age. Principal Williams is a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale as well as Governors State University. She is currently completing her doctorate dissertation at Concordia University in Chicago.

While chatting with Ebonie, it was evident to me that she will bring a fresh and innovative approach to her position.

Principal Williams talked about how her management style is rooted in a style that can best be described as ‘Servant Leadership.’ In contrast to a top-down management style, a servant leader’s primary focus is to help others reach their full L-R Dolton Mayor Riley H. “I am excited to support each staff member at Thornridge High School,” Williams commented. “My priority is to make sure that I am serving our staff, so they can meet the needs of our highest priority – our students. Each and every person plays an important role. I want each parent to know that their student will be well cared for at Thornridge, and we will do everything we can to prepare them for success in their lives.”

Principal Williams spoke about how she was excited to continue Thornridge student’s participation in popular D205 programs such as Navistar, AVID, International Baccalaureate, Culinary Arts and the Pre-Pharmacy program. These programs are further evidence that District 205 is committed to a quality education for students on both career and academic tracks.

Community outreach will also be a priority for Principal Williams. During our interview, Mayor Riley H. Rogers made a personal visit to meet the new principal. They both spoke about the importance of Thornridge High School being located in Dolton, and partnering to provide services that will be mutually beneficial to Thornridge Students. Mayor Rogers shared the success of his 50/20-employment initiative this summer. The ‘50/20 Youth Employment and Enrichment Program’ provided summer jobs and life-skills training for 50 young people between the ages of 16 and 24.

“If the youth don’t have anything to do, they will find something to do, and it might not always be beneficial. We want to provide them with positive things to become involved in,” said Mayor Rogers. “Many times, youth programs only target those who are considered the high-achievers; however this program also provides opportunities for youth who are often considered ‘at-risk.’ They deserve to have access to resources and training that will benefit them as well,” Mayor Rogers added.

“I agree with and support these programs,” commented Williams. “We need to reach beyond the walls of the physical school building to assist our students. It’s difficult for students to do well in class when they are worrying about their next meal or having a roof over their head. I’m committed to doing the challenging work that needs to be done to ensure our students have every advantage –both during class and after hours.”

“I’m looking forward to the possibilities and promise at TR” Williams concluded. “We have a renewed sense of vision and purpose. I invite you to continue to be a part of our exciting progress. And please remember the Thornridge motto ‘We Are TR!’ includes each and every member of our school community!”

Dogs Welcome at Humane Society Annual 5K Run/Walk Runners and walkers, as well as their pooches, are invited to hit the pavement as Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) and Lan-Oak Park District host the sixth annual Spay the Stray 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 10 in Lansing, Ill. The race begins at 9 a.m. at Eisenhower Center, 2550 178th St., Lansing, Ill. The fast a nd f lat course t ravels t hroug h a quiet neighborhood. All ages are welcome to participate. Proceeds benefit spay and neuter surgeries performed at HSCA’s Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic.

New this year, leashed dogs are welcome to participate in the 5K run/ walk and walkers can choose whether they would like their walk timed.

“There aren’t many local races that allow dogs to participate with their owners and we are excited to offer this chance for dogs and owners to bond and socialize with other runners and pet owners,” HSCA Special Events Coordinator Mari Angotti said.

Humane Society Launches Alumni Association for Adopted Pets Did you adopt a pet from Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA)? In honor of the organization’s 75th anniversary, adopters are invited to register their pet as a member of the animal shelter’s new alumni association.

Modeled after university alumni associations, HSCA’s Alumni Association will keep members up-to-date on the latest news from their alma mater and members will receive specially branded keepsakes. This year’s membership premium will be a bandana and adopters will have the option to purchase a t-shirt as well.

“We have many adopters who send in stories about how their adopted pet has made such a difference in their lives,” HSCA Marketing Director Ashley Boyer said, “and we thought that an alumni association would be a great way to bring together the thousands of pets and adopters whose lives have been positively impacted through the organization.”

Membership fees begin at $25 and all members receive a membership card, a subscription to HSCA’s “Speak!” magazine, access to a private alumni Facebook group, a discount coupon on the pet’s birthday and more.

Funds raised from the alumni association will help provide food, shelter, and medical care for the animals of HSCA. Many of the animals who find shelter at HSCA have had no prior medical care and need extensive treatment before they can find forever homes.

W ho e x ac t l y i s t he s her i f f talking to? Is the sheriff talking to the bad guys and warning them to be on alert since 630 of their close friends have been arrested this year? A f ter a l l did we tell the Germans which beach we would be landing at in W W II? Without the element of surprise, every surprise birthday party would be a big d isappoi nt ment.

So it doesn’t seem likely that the sheriff is talking to the bad guys with this billboard.

Perhaps the sheriff is talking to the good taxpay ing cit izens of t his area and warning them that bad guys are crawling out of the woodwork since 630 have been arrested a l ready t h i s yea r. It ’s kind of like cockroaches or law n g r ubs. I f you have 630 grubs in your ya rd, it’s of f icia l ly a n infestation and there are rea l ly t housa nds more like them - you just can’t see them. Another possibility is that the sheriff is talking to good c it i z en s w ho are on t he fence - and contemplating a life of crime. “Don’t do it”, he may be saying, “we have arrested 630 bad guys, so a life of crime may look good, but it will not pay in the end.” This angle makes a bit more sense to me. Kind of like the DARE programs in school that warned kids about the dangers of drugs and a lcohol. T he bi l lboa rd is warning law abiding citizens to stay on t he straight and narrow path and don’t give in to the allure of easy money. He also may be reminding people to buy their auto insurance, obey traff ic laws, and test their vehicle for emissions when the yellow notice comes in the mail.

It seemed like a simple billboard to me, but now I’m not so sure just who the sheriff is talking to.

I guess I’ll just assume he’s talking to me and to make sure that my car is street legal at all times – and I follow every rule of the road. After all, I don’t want to be bad guy number 631.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We’ve signed an agreement of sale with a new home builder, put $40,000 down and are soon going to have the new house ready.

The problem? We have not sold our ex isting home. We ca n’t a f ford bot h mortgages and do not qualify for both anyway. How to get our deposit back or what we can do? Our new home builder is aware of our situation and said they will be sending an appraiser over to our house to see if they can do anything for us. What do you think they might do? They are being very vague and we are very stressed.

Answer: The goa l of a home builder is to sell new homes. Unless there’s a contractual obligation to the contrary, it is not the builder’s job to sell your existing home, buy it or fix it up.

Most likely you have bought a new home using a sale agreement written by attorneys who work for, ta da, the builder.

You can bet that every term and clause favors the homebuilder, thus the odds of getting back your deposit are pretty low.

W hat can you do? Selling the first property is the plain solution, but if that’s not possible then would it make sense to rent it? Would it make sense to stay in the existing home and then rent the new one? The problem with this approach is that you likely applied for and obtained financing as an owner-occupant and not an investor.

Having an attorney review the new home sale agreement to see if there are any grounds for the return of your deposit.

For insta nce, what if you no longer qualify for financing? How about a partial settlement where you give up some -- but not all -- of the deposit?

With more and more homes being sold to investors, there are a lot of houses being flipped in today’s market. Not to say there’s any thing w rong with that…there’s nothing w rong w it h ea r n i ng a living or making money.

But w hat I’ve not iced recently are the “fix and flips”. Perhaps a property is swooped up for a good price in a distressed sale situation. The owner has no i ntent ion of l iv i ng t here a nd does put i n some sweat equity/elbow grease. Then places the proper t y back on t he market. If done correctly, the home will look great.

If done incorrectly, the home w i l l look l i ke a rental property. Some of the fix and flip homes I’ve looked at are terrible. The quality of work is just not there and it’s noticeable.

She was happy, but she had a question.

A Still Small Voice ANNA M. CAISON W hen e x p er ienc i n g u n f or e s e en circumstances in life and/or ministry we often seek advice from our pastor or close friends. We strain to hear God’s voice of direction through a sermon, or a song.

We’ll pull out our Topical Bible looking for passages that mirror our situation to explain or make sense out of what we’re going through. And many times God will speak to us through others and through specific examples from the Bible. But there are also times when God will speak through the still quiet moments of a seemingly mundane task.

One of the easiest to grow houseplants for me is the philodendra. I like the fact that it can be grown in water or potting soil, and it produces lush green cascading vines. I had notice that for some time one of my plants appeared to be dying. One by one its long lush vines withered, turning yellow and then brown before falling off the main branch. Yet there was new growth shooting up near the base of the

plant. In an attempt to save the last of its dying vines I clipped it and placed it in a separate container of water with a few drops of plant food. The next morning, the clipped vine had made a miraculous recover y! The leaves were no longer drooping, they were pointing upward and the green color had returned to its stem. It was here, in this unexpected moment of serene amazement that God spoke peace to the bewildering situation I was going through.

There are seasons of growth when it becomes necessary for God to “clip” us, setting us apart from the group in order to prepare us to bear more fruit, either in a different position or in a new location for His purposes. If we cling to where God desires to remove us from, like my vine, we will wither and become unproductive.

The meals are preceded by baskets of tender French bread, garlic or not as you wish, salads and choice of potato or Steve’s delicious potato pancakes like Mom used to make! Yum! This is definitely a destination restaurant and if you check the plates on cars in the parking lot, diners come from far and near, north side, Indiana and former residents who moved to Florida, Arizona and so on. Steve’s is at 132nd and Baltimore. *** MAJOR ENTERTAINMENT/EVENT MECCA TO COME DOWN: Since 1979, when it made its debut with the likes of Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Tom Jones, Liberace and Victor Borge, the former Holiday Star Theater in Merrillville, Indiana, now the Star Plaza Theater and the Radisson Hotel is set for demolition next year in order to make way for a newer, more up to date venue, under the guidance of White Lodging. The intersection of US 30 and I-65 is one of the heaviest traveled areas in the country. The stores and shopping Malls(Southlake and others) and restaurants and venues of all stripes within a 5 mile radius are sure to feel the loss of the “biggest show in town.” A new, upscale hotel is to be built in it’s place according to insiders. How many of us in the last 40 years can remember spending special events like birthdays anniversaries and holidays at the Holiday Star/Star Plaza? I can remember taking my mother to one of the hilarious performances of Victor Borge in the late 1970’s and us laughing our heads off at his zany antics, followed by a trip to one of the many restaurants for pie and coffee following his show. I hope the powers that be know what they are doing taking away that wonderful place. We will miss it!
