What’s Your Big Idea? KEVIN BRADLEY L ife shou ld be a cont i nuous lea r n i ng experience. To experience l i f e i s t o c ont i nu a l l y lea r n new t h i ngs. It is impor ta nt to note t hat k nowledge ca n, a nd shou ld be, be atta ined f rom mu lt iple sou rces. We c a n le a r n f r om experts, our peers, and through the experience of self discovery. Having a nat u ra l ta lent for somet h i ng g ives one an advantage, but more important than raw talent is development of talent through experience. Michael Jordan, perhaps t he g reatest basketba l l player ever, was blessed with a raw talent for the ga me. T h i s G od-g iven ability made him a good player. However, being a good player wa s not enough to satisfy Michael. He wou ld consistent ly show up early and stay late for practice. He shot thousands of baskets on his own time. He had a profound love of the game and something inside of him made him want to master his a rt, a nd for those of us old enough to remember his play….what a master he was! I like to watch musical artists and concerts on TV. Recently, on Paladia, I saw a show hosted by Joe Walsh. Billy Gibbons said, (paraphrased) “Back when I was about eighteen, we were staying at the same motel as Jimi Hendri x. Every night we saw them h au l i n g a hu ge pie c e of f urniture into Jimi’s room. One nig ht I was invited in. That big piece of furniture was one of those old console record players. Jimi was sitting t here l i sten i ng to Jef f
Beck, moving his fingers, as if playing the guitar. I said, ‘Jimi, what are you doing?’ He said, ‘I’m trying to figure out how he does that.’ I said, ‘Jimi, I think we’re all trying to figure out how you do that.’” A true artist, no matter how a c c ompl i s he d, a l w a y s strives to learn more and be better. The greatest are never satisfied. Whatever your passion may be, odds a re t hat t here i s a pe er g roup you can join to discuss, learn, and help to master you r sk i l l s. Now aday s finding your peer group is easier than ever through utilization of tools such as the internet and social media. I recently attended a meeting of the Indiana Wr iter’s Consor t iu m, a NWI based organization pr om ot i n g t h e a r t of writing. They, along with pa r t ner Book s Br ushes & Ba nds for Educat ion will be hosting a creative w r it i ng work shop on S at u r d a y, A u g u s t 2 nd from 1-9 PM. in the Merge Bu i ld i ng, 5920 Homa n Av enue, Ha m mond , Indiana. Visit turnknob. com or call Shelly at 219932-3232 for information, or to r e g i s t er for t he workshop. It’s only $20 and includes dinner, so i f you’re i nterested i n developing your writing skills, this is a bargain. Whatever your passion may be, you will do well to con sider you rsel f a life-long student. There is always more to learn. Keep you r m ind li ke a sponge, always thirsty for knowledge. Questions or comments may be sent to kevinbradley@columnist. com. Good Luck, K.B.

Free Bi-Weekly Dementia What’s The Use In Being Education Series For Caregivers Kind To People? www.myshopper.biz
DUANE MUHAMMAD How ma ny t imes have you asked yourself, “I need to learn how to say no more often?” You really don’t feel you put your foot down enough. The last time you let another driver in and they didn’t give the proverbial wave you decided you’re not ever going to be courteous to the next ungrateful driver. So you say. But what happens? Out of instinct you let the driver in and again, they don’t give the customary wave of thank you. I know what. I’ll just be a little meaner and a little tougher with people because I kind of feel that people continue to take my kindness for weakness. Yeah, that’s right. I’m not taking it anymore. Let someone ask to borrow money from me again and the answer will be a resounding, “NO”. Is that really your way? You think folks are really taking advantage of you? Guess what? I don’t believe so. You can be even nicer to people. It gives you a good feeling when you do a favor. It’s a good feeling to give. I know it may sound corny to some of you. It probably sounds silly to those of you who subscribe to wanting to be mean and tough to people. How kind should you treat others? We’re not kind enough to each other. I said it. Yes, we need to practice being much kinder than what we really are. It’s okay to be tough but not in a meanspirited way. You can correct in a kind and thoughtful way. Is correcting someone who committed a mistake reason to berate
them or kindly show them the mistake and show how it should have been done properly? We think being tough to others is the way to go in getting things done. If you’re in charge of people and you want something done in an expeditious m a n n e r, h o w w o u l d y o u t e l l t h e subordinate to get the task done? Ask them kindly. “Can you please do me a favor? I’d appreciate it greatly if you would take the time and make this or that happen for me. Thanks.” Now it’s that easy. You really don’t like being told what to do. But you don’t mind if someone asked you kindly. You say, “I’m the boss and I don’t have to ask I give orders.” True. How do you give the order? Do you do it in a militaristic way as though you were a Marine sergeant? Or do you give the order in a firm and resolute manner? You can tell someone what to do but notice the difference in your tone. You’re not screaming the order you’re giving the order. Finally, you can’t be kind enough. Try it and see. We say all the time, “How are you doing today? ” Next time say with some hesitation like you’re really waiting for an answer and watch how the person responds. They w ill feel that you are truly concerned at just how they’re doing and you will pause and listen and give a sincere response to your sincere inquiry. Let’s practice being much kinder to each other and watch how much better you’ll feel.

Calumet City Joins Thornton Township for Picnic Calumet Memorial Park was the location for a recent Thornton Township ‘Day in the Park.’ Calumet Memorial Park is the crown jewel of the Calumet City Park District. This park is located at 626 Wentworth Avenue in Calumet City and provides many family-friendly activities. The park includes a splash pad, batting cages, driving range cage and a miniature golf course, along with more traditional park equipment like swing sets and picnic tables. Thornton Township hosts picnics in the towns located in the township throughout the summer. Frank Zuccarelli, township supervisor said that summer recreation is an important part of building strong families. The ‘Days in the Park’ program was created to help families take some time away from their busy schedules and relax and enjoy the outdoors. Summer is also the season for golf outings, beaches and family reunions. Road trips are planned and vacations are enjoyed. Your local elected officials remind you to be safe and enjoy the summertime with your family and friends!

Calumet City Joins Thornton Township for Picnic Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Easy Clean Car800-287-1701 Wash (Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. VB

In a f irst of it’s k ind f ire simu lator throughout the greater Chicago/ Calumet region, Calumet City Fire Chief William Ga lga n a nd h is f i ref ig hters gave a demonstration of the new FireBlast Global si mu lator on equ ipment pa id for v ia a $420,000 Federal Fire Act Grant/FEMA. The new equipment can, at t he f lip of a switch, produce a raging, fully engaged fire. The equipment includes a mock up kitchen in both commercial and residential appearances and various mock up walls/ surfaces in a mobile training building. Fi reBla st Globa l Tech n ica l Suppor t Representative, Tom Bergersen coordinated the demonstration on July 16, 2014 at Wes’ Towing on Wilson Drive in Calumet City. The simulators are there temporarily until the new location at 24 State Street is completeplanned for 2015.
A fter the simulated ‘burn’ was fully engulfed, the firefighters extinguished the blaze using water and foam. The simulator is a learning tool for future firefighters and will be used for all types of education purposes and refresher courses for existing firefighters. The examples of firefighters putting out the actual fires both in the ‘burn house’ and propane tanks outside showed the power and rage of a fully engaged fire complete with rollovers and flash fires. Calumet City is planning to build a public safety training facility on State Street with 2 offices, 3 classrooms and garages. At this location seminars and professional training sessions will be held. The Calumet City ESDA will also be housed on the property. This state of the art training equipment and soon to be facility will be the only of it’s kind in the State of Illinois, located in Calumet City!

,QWHUQHW 3URJUDP IRU 7KRUQWRQ 7RZQVKLS Comcast has announced an exciting new program called Internet Essentials to benefit Thornton Township residents. Faith United Methodist Church at 15025 Grant St. in Dolton was the location where local elected officials met to unveil the program. The program will create a zone to expand Internet access into Thornton Township for lowincome families who may not otherwise be able to afford it.
Thornton Township Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli supports Comcasts Internet Essential program.
Local officials have designated the township an Internet Enterprise Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle attends inLearning Zone. Thornton Township ternet event. has 17 municipalities that will be included in this program. Families that qualify for the School Lunch Program will also qualify for Internet access at their place of residence. The cost will be just $9.95 per month. This compares to approximately $50 per month for regular Internet service.
Comcast officials said such moves are essential because many lower-income families would not have access to the Internet if they have to pay the full fee per month. It is important for children to have Internet access at home, to supplement the work they do at school. nternet Enterprise Zones have existed about a year in Chicago, however the new zone for Thornton Township is the first to come to the south suburbs. Comcast officials also are contributing $10,000 to enhance a computer laboratory at the Faith UMC, along with creating a computer lab at the Riverdale Community Resource Center. Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli said he was pleased to see the new program, which he said will benefit the youth programs the township operates. “This will definitely help our youth and their families and enhance their school, career and home life. Comcast has been a valued partner to Thornton Township and I commend them and their commitment to our residents.” Also on hand for the announcement was Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who said she’s pleased to see more economical Internet access come to Thornton Township. “I’m happy to see the funds being used wisely, and making a difference in the lives of township residents,” she said.
Faith UMC young people hosted Comcast and elected officials.

Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES If I look at my week ly calendar, and it’s filled w ith appointments and errands, I’ll dream of the day I can sit and watch old reruns of Scarecrow a nd Mrs. K ing, while I snack on Milk Duds. It’s my mental vacation. For Sgt. Buetow, he dreamed of going to Hershey. I would think this is where He r s h e y c h o c o l a t e i s made, and that’s why he liked it so much. But there mu st ’ve been more to Hershey than chocolate. Probably has to do with fond memor ies w it h his w ife on vacation in Hershey. Sg t . Rober t Buetow was stationed in Germany during W WII. He wrote d a i l y t o h i s w i f e, L u (n ick na me “Mom my ”), d rea m i ng of t he day s when he would see her again. Langen, Germany Wednesday, June 20, 1945 Mommy Darling (cont.), …How e v e r, s i nc e t he 703rd is a separate bat t a l ion, w e m ay b e luck ier t ha n t hat. It’s possible t hat when t he v a r iou s d i v i s ion s a r e shipped home they’ll have enough space for an extra battalion, and in that case they’ll pick one like the 703rd, so keep your fingers crossed and hope, honey! I’ve got a new t y pe, or rather a later issue, of that Spearhead booklet I sent you a long time ago.

It starts where the other one left off and goes all the way up to the end of the war in Germany. As soon as I can get some stamps I’ll send it to you by airmail. It w o u l d b e s w e l l if I could get back this su m mer, or even ea rly fall so we could take our trip to Hershey, wouldn’t it? Maybe we’ll go there anyhow, even if I get out during the winter time. W hat do you t h i n k, sweetheart? We’ll go away somewhere together for at least a week, regardless of when I get out. That $300 mu ster i ng-out pay I’l l receive when I get out will take care of our expenses a nd a lso buy me some clothes. O.K., mommy, you can use part of it to buy a new dress. That’s all for tonight sweet one. I expect to be pretty busy tomorrow night and Friday night, but I’ll write as soon as possible. ANNA M. CAISON I received the following request from a reader who goes by the name Silence. “W hile reading the book of Daniel it dawned on me how many Miracles were performed during that time, i.e. restored sight, healing, feeding multiples with very little, etc. Fast forward present day a lot of people I talk to feel hopeless or full of despair and because of that they overlook Miracles and Blessings (I know prayer works and Miracles large/small are being performed daily). Therefore I’m asking you to write a column asking people for the next 90 days to Tweet, Facebook, etc. any Blessing/Miracles large or small they have received or witness.” I persona l ly k now t hat God st i l l reveals Himself to us through the working of miracles. Nine years ago, following the birth of her baby, my youngest daughter called to tell me she and the baby were coming to visit----she said she wanted to cook dinner for me. While she was in the kitchen preparing the meal I held my infant grandchild in my arms, waltzing while singing spiritual songs to her. My daughter sat down next to where I stood and touched the hem of my dress. A week later she called me. “Mom, remember when I touched the hem of your dress?” “Yes.” Well, the doctor told me I had cancer and needed to think about having

a hysterectomy. I remembered t he woman in the Bible who touched the hem of Jesus’ robe and she was healed. I know you are a woman of God so I asked God would He heal me if I touched the hem of your dress. I just came back from the doctor, the cancer is gone!” In 1974 my family of three was in a personal famine after my husband was laid off his job. All we had in the house was a half a bag of pinto beans. Believing the scriptures that tell of God multiplying meal and oil for a widow, her son and the Prophet Elijah during a famine; I asked God to multiply my pinto beans. For a week my husband, daughter, and I ate pinto beans for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The pot never ran out of beans. Our famine ended on the seventh day. (More next week) For t he nex t 90 day s I’d l i ke to encourage you to share your stories of God’s healings and miracles in your life. And with your permission I’d like to share them with our readers. Who knows, your testimony may very well lead someone to “greater” faith in Christ. Smart Use of “Variables” Can Lead to Right Answers for Retirement BOB KRYGSHELD If you think back to y ou r m at h c l a s s e s i n high school or college, you may remember that ma ny of t he problems i nvolved t he use of va r iables . Cha ng i ng t hese va riables a round i n a ny f a sh ion w ou ld change t he outcome of t he problem. Si m i la r situations occur in life all the time. To illustrate: If you look at the need to manage your retirement income so that you can’t outlive it as a “problem” to be solved, you will need to adjust some variables to arrive at the solution you seek. That’s why it’s so important you be aware of the key variables involved in your retirement income planning. What are some of these variables? Consider the following: • Yo u r i n v e s t m e n t mix — You might think t hat once you reach ret i rement, you ca n invest solely in incomeproducing vehicles, but you ca n’t forget about i n f l at ion . Ev en a low rate of inf lation, such as we’ve had for a number of years, can seriously erode your purchasing power over t i me — w h ich i s why you need to consider ow n i ng at le a st s ome investments that provide g row t h potent ia l. Of course, you can change your investment mix at any time: For example, you might want to shift to a greater percentage of income-oriented investments as you move deeper into retirement. • Your withdrawal rate — You’ll need to calculate how much you can afford to w it hdraw from your investment portfolio each year without depleting it prematurely. Your annual w it hd rawa l rate w i l l depend on a few different factors — such as your projected longevity, your investment mix and your other sources of income — but you’ll want to be careful not to take out too much too soon. As was the case with your investment mi x, you have t he f lexibility to adjust your w ithdrawa l rate during For sale: Air condition unit, 12,000 BTU, 220V, like new $150; Chippendale secretary desk, w/bookcase, 30” wide, claw legs, looks very good $125. 708-895-7704
your retirement years. • Your Social Security — You can start collecting Social Security benefits as ea rly as age 62, but y ou r b ene f it s w i l l b e p e r m a n e nt l y r e d u c e d b y u p t o 3 0 % u n le s s you wait until your Full Retirement Age (FR A ), which is likely 66 or 67. However, your monthly check s ca n i ncrease i f you delay ta k i ng you r benefits beyond your Full Ret i rement Age, up to age 70. If you come from a particularly long-living f a m i l y, a nd y ou h av e sufficient income apart from Social Security, you might want to delay your payments to get the larger benef it a mou nt . Onc e again, you have a choice to make. • Your earned income — Just because you’ve retired from one career, it doesn’t mean you’ll never again earn some income. Many retirees take partt i me jobs, do some consulting or even open a small business. Whether you feel that you need to work, or you just want to work, the money you earn from employment can be an important component of your overall retirement income. A s you ca n see, a l l t hese va riables involve choic e s on you r pa r t . And how you choose to exercise each va r iable will affect all the other variables. Consequently, as you ma nage a nd monitor your retirement income, you’l l need to ma ke ma ny i mpor ta nt decisions. St i l l, t h is doesn’t have to be a scary prospect — because the ver y fact that you have choices means you also have a great deal of control over your situation. So, study your choices ca ref u l ly, a s you work t ow a r d a c h ie v i n g t he income you need to enjoy the retirement you want. Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Put The Right Hat On! MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate industry, mortgage rules a nd t he w ay bu si ne s s i s done ch a nge d a i l y. Whether you are a buyer, a seller or a rea l estate agent you need to expect problems. A re you a nd you r agent problem solvers or solution seekers? Seriously, what do you focus on? Do you focus on the problem or do you focus on t he solut ion? There is a big difference between these seemingly similar approaches. Here’s my t a ke…let ’s say t he home inspection didn’t come out quite the way the seller or buyer wanted it to. Some agent s get their shorts in a bunch and “blame” the clueless inspector as if he is the problem and other agents get busy finding solutions to what needs to be fixed along with the buyer and sel ler. W h ich agent i s bringing better energy to the transaction? W hich agent comes across more professional, trustworthy and with the ability to get the job done? Seems pretty simple to me. I mean think about it – if what we focus on expands – then why in the world would you focus on the problem? Why not look for solutions? I know this may seem “simple” but I don’t think it’s as simple as we all believe. In fact it’s quite profound! It’s a lot more energizing to look for solutions. And it Pitchfork 5 tines, 4ft handle. New condition. $15. 219-8641962 Werner aluminum ladder, 16ft. Working length 13ft. $45. 219-864-1962. Soil sampler for lawn, garden, farm. Push into ground, pull it out. certainly is more creative a nd sat isf y ing as wel l. Think about this if you’ve got a “hitch-in-the-git-along” in your real estate t r a n sac t ion. Approach the situation w ith your solution-seeker hat rather than your problem solver hat. Visualize the solution hat on your head (ok-I k now t h is is sou nd i ng a little air y fair y but it work s). Ta ke t he t i me to not ice how much smoot her t he situat ion seems to get handled and how qu ick ly solut ion s come to m i nd. Not ice how the other parties in the transaction respond to you. And - notice how you feel! Seriously – if you practice solution-seeking enough it can change your life for the good – not to mention help to get your rea l estate t ra nsact ion closed. The ugly parts of being a landlord…
ARTHUR V. VEAL IV If you stay up late at night or you read on the internet you probably have heard that now is the time to invest in rea l estate. Once again ever yone is telling you to get on the rea l estate band wagon before you get left behind. Wel l I t houg ht I wou ld throw in some reality so that before you decide to become a land baron I can make you aware of some of the ugly parts of being a landlord. #1 Major Investment Becom i ng a la nd lord of ten requ i res a major investment. Either you put up cash to buy a home or you borrow money which still requires you to attach you r na me to debt. So be prepared to put some major cash into investing. The Answer: An a lter n at ive i s c re at ive f ina ncing. Look on a ny number of websites and w ith practice and some confidence you can buy proper t y w it hout much cash and not putting your name on debt. #2 Dealing with Tenants Dealing with tenants can be a major pa in in t he butt. Someone who has paid very little money to get control of your house or a pa r t ment h a s t he ability to do damage to the property or even worse, st ay t here for mont h s while you foot t he bill. Dealing with tenants takes a special kind of person. T he A n s w e r : S e t u p a
rent collection service to ha nd le t he major it y of your tenant interactions. Rent collection ser v ices handle messy ca lls and take tenant concerns and relay them to you. They act as a buffer. #3 Dealing with bad tenant move-outs Unless you are really good, eventually you will have to deal with tenants that move out in the middle of the night and don’t clean your property. I can’t tell you how many times I have had to clean a tenant’s crap out of a house because they don’t properly clean up. It can be frustrating and it really makes you question why you got into this in the first place. The Answer: Get a strong deposit and get copies of I.D. so that in the case you have to go after a tenant for damages, you can always track down their address by their ID’s. Hope this information helps make you aware of the business before you decide to try it. If you want more tips like my site at Ownwithnobank.com Unt i l nex t we ek… A r t h u r V. CALUMET CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT SECURES STATE OF THE ART FIRE TRAINING EQUIPMENT: After receiving a Federal Fire Act Grant/FEMA of $420,000, Calumet “City took delivery of a collection of simulators that will be used in training exercises for present and future fire fighters. The equipment is now stored at Wes’ Towing but will be moved to 24 State Street where the City plans to build a public safety training facility at will be state of the art. Denise Rzonca, a member of Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush inner circle noted during a recent demonstration of the equipment that there is “nothing like this anywhere in this area, not even Chicago has this.” The demonstration was coordinated by Tim Bergersen, a Field Service Representative for Fire Blast Global, an international design and production of fire training equipment for first responders and fire service personnel, who brought Calumet Chief William Galgan and his firefighters for the startling, all too real, depiction of what a real fire is like. The demonstration showed how fire flashes and rolls in a home and outside when propane catches on fire. Just watching this gives one a greater respect for firefighters and first responders and a greater respect for the power of fire. These firefighters put their lives on the line each time they leave the station, in all weather, freezing cold, summer heat and everything in between--and they do it for us, the public! Thank You and Blessings and prayers for your safety to firefighters from all the communities in the Shopper readership and beyond! *** TED’S FEED STORE TO OFFER LOW COST VACCINE CLINIC: As they have done in the past, Ted’s Feed Store, 17950 Burnham Avenue, Lansing, will host a low cost vaccine clinic on two dates this fall: September 13 and October 11th via Spay Illinois, (The Pet Well Clinic, Lisle, Il) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., each of those days at Ted’s. The Pet Well Clinic “helps to ensure that all owners can afford preventative care for their pets.” As regular readers of N 2 N know, my husband and I are dog lovers and have two adorable Bishon’s, ages 5 and 6 that we dote on. But, admittedly, having a pampered pet can be expensive so when ever I run across people who love pets as much as I do, I try and pass the information along. In this case there are dog pack specials and cat pack specials and it is not just for spay and neutering, but for well pet annual health care like rabies, distemper shots and so on. For more information contact them at 877-475-7729 or visit www.spayillinois.org Pet Well Clinics are operated by Spay Illinois, a 501c-3 nonprofit organization. *** VETERANS TO BENEFIT FROM DYER VFW POST 6448 STEAK FRY: If the thought of a freshly grilled 12 ounce porterhouse steak gets your taste buds going--how about enjoying that fabulous steak for a good cause? Saturday July 26th, at the VFW Post on Gettler Street, Dyer, Indiana (across from the police station in the hospital parking lot) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. post members will be hosting the event which will benefit veterans and
their surviving widows and orphans in the local community. The steak dinner ($20 per person) includes a one pound baked potato, a garden salad and one adult beverage (so you must be 21 to attend.) As a warm up to the steak dinner, starting at 5 p.m. The Mike Valentine Singers will entertain with a variety classic rock n’ roll classics from the 1950’s through the 1970’s. *** MORE ON OUR PRECIOUS PETS: The Humane Society of the Calumet Area hosted an adoption event last weekend (Sponsored by Carol Allegretti and Melissa Hickey, broker/owners of REmax Results, Schererville, In) as part of the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The 2014 ASPCA Rachel Ray $100 K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners. As a contestant in the Challenge, HSCA is competing for a change at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000. An upcoming adoption event will take place on July 26th, 2014 with adoption fees waived for scouts and scout leaders, and on August 2nd, 2014 with adoption fees waived for EMT’s and lifeguards. A list of adoption events and specials can be found on www.hscalumet.org/aspca. asp The shelter will host two more Empty the Shelter weekends--August 9-10 and August 30-31 with adoption fees waived for qualifying applications. *** FRANK ZUCCARELLI’S 30th ANNUAL PICNIC SET FOR SUNDAY AUGUST 10TH, 2014: Bring a lawn chair and your state ID to the annual summertime treat hosted by the Thornton Township Supervisor at Green Lake Woods, 159th and Torrence Avenue in Calumet City. Festivities start at 11 a.m. Picnic tables are limited so it might be a good idea to bring a blanket as well. The event is sponsored and paid for by the Friends of Frank Zuccarelli. For more information, 708-596-4027 or go to FOFZTeam@aol.com/facebook. *** CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF ARMANDO A. VAZQUEZ: Armando’s name is synonymous with beauty--hair styling and the development of the spa concept. For more than 40 years Armando plied his trade and created some of the most beautiful hair styles and colors, daring to be different when others were still in the old traditional ‘beauty shop’ mold. He came up with the idea to create a spa experience for men and women and built a monument to that idea on Ridge Road in Lansing, now occupied by an attorney and a realty firm. It didn’t quite work out the way Armando had planned, but his ideas were always on the cutting edge. He leaves behind his mother and brothers and sister and is fondly remembered by all who know and loved him. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday July 23rd, 2014 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Laurel Church, 7525 Taft Street, Merrillville, Indiana with Pastor Lawrence Rafferty officiating. A scholarship for aspiring cosmetology students is being set up in Armando’s memory. He was a friend and confidante to many, many regular clients and a mentor to many, providing inspiration and encouragement to budding beauticians. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’ve had my home for sale now for almost a year. I don’t know why my home is not selling. I have a newer furnace & central air. My agent says it is too high in price. I know my house is worth what I’m asking. Any suggestions? A nswer: The rea l trut h is “Location, condition, and price.” And price tops every other factor. Location affects the value of a home, but it’s price that sells a home. Oceanfront, mountainside, or penthouse, the most desirable location in the world won’t sell at the wrong price. A good location will sell at a fair price. A bad location will sell at a fair price, too. It just won’t be as a high as it would be for a good location. A home in good condition will sell for a fair price. A home in poor condition will also sell at a fair price. Again, it won’t be as high as a comparable home in better condition. But neither location or condition will sell any house. Only one thing does that -
price. So if you’re a seller waiting for that “special buyer” who will appreciate your 1970’s décor and flowery wallpaper, and is willing to pay you top dollar for your home because of your real estate prowess, you’re going to have a long wait. Maybe you didn’t listen to your agent when he said you are pricing your home above the market. Maybe you got mad at the first few buyers who looked at your home and didn’t make offers. W hen t he show ings stopped completely, maybe you accused your agent of not doing a good enough job. You put the blame on everyone except where it belongs - on you. It’s not about you, what you want, or how much you need for your retirement. It’s about the price.” E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com.
