Question: What is the legal age a person may operate a motorboat? Answer: In Illinois, no one under age 10 may operate a motorboat. Children age 12 and above may legally operate a motorboat alone if they have taken a boat safety course. It is not necessary for a person between the age of 10 and 17, to complete a safety course in boat operation if that person is accompanied by a parent or guardian. The owner or person in control of a motorboat is forbidden by law to allow someone who does not meet the age or boating education requirements to operate the vessel. Question: Can “pretend” military heroes face penalties for claiming they received certain military awards or honors? Answer: The federal Stolen Valor Act of 2013 prohibits someone from falsely claiming certain military awards or honors, such as the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor, for the purpose of obtaining “money, property or other tangible benefit.” Violators of the law can face up to one year in prison.

Question: Under what circumstances may police legally take a DNA sample from a suspect? Answer: Under a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling, police can now procure DNA samples from people in connection with a violent crime, without obtaining a warrant, and despite a finding of guilt in a court of law. The Supreme Court ruled that taking a person’s DNA through a cheek swab is like taking fingerprints or a photo and is a minor intrusion to a person under arrest. Until now, DNA testing was allowed only if a person was convicted of a crime. All DNA results are entered into a database and automatically checked for matches. DNA has been used with incredible accuracy to identify criminals as well as exonerate those who were wrongly convicted of a crime. This program applies a grant payment towards your electric bill to help reduce summer cooling costs. WIP will be processing CEDA Cooling Applications starting July 15th – 26th, 2013 at 1830 W. 95th St, Chicago, Il 60643, Monday – Friday from 9am – 4pm for Cook County Residents.
