Help The Monarch Butterflies Have you heard about the decline of monarch butterflies? Butterfly numbers are way down all across the Midwest with the State of Illinois being right in the center of the monarch’s flyway to Canada. Each and every one of you can do something to help monarch butterflies and that is...Plant Milkweed in Your Yard! Monarchs will only lay their eggs on any kind of milkweed. To learn more, go to youtube.com Kay MacNeil Milkweed To Monarchs (45 minutes). I’ve tried to answer every question I’ve ever been asked when giving a program including what plants to buy, how to raise caterpillars, and other pertinent information. This video may be used as a free program for your church group, scouts, whoever, without seeking permission. Handouts to accompany the program are available by email (kaymac60423@yahoo.com.) DVDs are also available. Do you already have milkweed? Part of the Milkweed For Monarchs effort is collecting milkweed pods of any kind of milkweed, drying it and getting it to Chairman Kay MacNeil for distribution to the Illinois Department of Transportation for over seeding old or new projects along roadsides of the State. Questions? Call Kay at 815-469-1294.

Financial Advice Column
Be Aware of Challenges to Managing Retirement Income BOB KRYGSHELD When you retire, will your cost of living decline? Some of your expenses may i ndeed d rop, but others won’t. Plus, you may have some new ones to consider. So, all in all, it’s a good idea to think about ways to boost your retirement savings now, before you’re retired. Specifically, consider these areas: • Longevity – Obviously, the longer your retirement lasts, t he more money you’ll need. A 65-yearold man, on average, is expected to live another 17. 9 y e a r s , w h i l e a 65-year-old woman can anticipate another 20.5 years, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. With this type of potent ia l longev it y in mind, you’ll want to contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and 401(k), while you’re work i ng. T hen, when you are retired and start tapping into your i nv e s t me nt p or t f ol io, you will need to create a sustainable withdrawal rate – one that doesn’t push you into the “danger zone” of possibly outliving your resources. • Health care – Once you enter you r ret i rement years, your health care costs are all but certain to rise, even with Medicare. In fact, the average annual o u t- o f- p o c k e t h e a l t h care cost for a household between 65 and 74 years old is $4,383 – about 11% of total household spending, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. A nd t he s e c o s t s r i s e substa ntia lly for t hose over 74. To help cope with these costs, you’ll need a reasonable amount of liquidity in your portfolio. • Long-term care – You may never need to stay in a nursing home or receive ser v ices f rom a home health care worker. But
you are taking somewhat of a gamble if you don’t prepare for these longterm care costs – because they are high. In fact, the annual average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more t ha n $92,000, according to the 2016 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth, a f ina ncia l ser v ices c o m p a n y. M e d i c a r e typically pays very little of t hese expenses, but a financial professional c a n help you f i nd a n appropriate way of coping with these types of costs. • Inflation – We’ve had low inflation the past several years, but it hasn’t gone away entirely, and it won’t disappea r when you’re ret ired, eit her. Even a mild rate of inflation can, over time, seriously erode your purchasing power. To combat the effects of inf lation, you’ll need to own at least some growthoriented investments. • Market volatility – The f i na ncia l ma rkets w i l l bou nce up a nd dow n during your retirement years, just as t hey did when you were working. The big difference? You have less time to recover – a nd you don’t wa nt to w ithdraw from your investments when their price is down. However, you can help avoid this necessity by maintaining enough income-producing vehicles in your portfolio; these types of investments usually f luctuate much less in value than stocks and stock-based vehicles. By being aware of these issues, both before and during your retirement, you can prepare for them – and preparation is key to managing your income, as it is in all walks of life. God Revealed ANNA M. CAISON Ever wondered about some of the puzzling statements Jesus said? Last week I was in the parking lot of the grocery store putting my groceries in the trunk of my car when a young man standing about 2 feet away called out to me. “Ma’am, I don’t mean to disturb you but could you give me some change so I can buy something to eat for me and my family?” I didn’t have any cash on me so I offered to go into the store with him and purchase for him what he needed. He was very appreciative, asking if it was okay to get certain items he thought cost too much. After we finished shopping we paused in the parking lot and I prayed for him and his family. In the store I had given him a business card with my work number to call me so I could connect him with our Male Involvement program for job assistance. W hen I got back in my car I said, “What just happened? Was that a smart thing to do?” Almost immediately one of Jesus’ puzzling statements played in my ear, “Don’t let your left hand know what the right hand is doing.” I started
laughing as I began to understand what that statement meant. I didn’t think about my bills that needed to be paid. And, I didn’t think, “What if he’s conning me?” I didn’t judge his situation, or lecture him about doing better. A need was expressed to me and I responded to that need. I didn’t let my rational mind know what my agape mind was doing. What was Jesus’ purpose in feeding the five thousand? What was His purpose in interacting with the social outcasts? He did it that God would be revealed (glorified) as a God of love who values all people, and is concerned about our everyday struggles and crisis. Why does God call us to emulate Him in demonstrating love and concern for others? Because this is how He chooses to reveal Himself to those who don’t yet know Him. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: In what ways does inf lation affect home prices? Answer: Inflation means that the value of cash is being reduced over time, thus it takes more dollars to buy a loaf of bread -- or a house. In practical terms, homeowners can beat inflation with a fixed-rate mortgage. While the interest rate is set, inf lation over time means that each month you’re paying with less-valuable dollars while the cash value of your home rises. If the cash value of your home rises faster than the rate of inflation, they you’ve gaining additional spending power and that’s both one measure of real wealth and often a very good reason to be a long-term real estate owner. ••••• Question: I have a neighbor with a dog that howls through the night. What would you suggest I do to remedy this situation? A nswer: Most com mu n it ies requ i re

appropriate pet supervision, so the proper step is to have someone contact t he owners. The local humane society, pound or health department can all provide information. Ask if your name will be kept confidential; that’s a common policy in many communities. When you speak with local officials ask them to do as little as possible. You do not want someone’s pet removed, you only want better supervision from the owner. It may well be that in this case the owner does not hear the dog and is literally unaware of the problem since it only occurs at night.

WOODROW WILCOX In September 2015, a c l ie nt s e nt me he r med ica l bi l l for $ 360. S h e w a nt e d t o k n o w why she owed it. She had both Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy through t his insura nce agency. The client is from East Chicago, Indiana. I investigated the bill and wrote two letters to prod the medical service provider to correct and refile the claim. The $360 bill was caused because the doctor’s office filed the claim incorrectly as an “annual wellness” visit. Instead, it should have been filed as a “welcome to Medicare” visit. In my second letter to the doctor’s office, I cited exactly why the claim was filed incorrectly, how it should have been filed, and flatly stated that the only reason the bill had a $360 balance was because of the erroneous filing. MIKE BUDER While showing homes the other day, I began to w onder w hy s o m a ny occupied homes are not properl y prepa re d for showings. Most sellers k now i n adva nce t hat their home is going to be show n. W hen you get that call, it’s almost “show t ime”. Have a pla n of action to get your home in “show-ready shape”. Open a l l t he blinds and turn on all the lights. Homes that are light and bright appear larger and more inviting. If you have ceiling fans, turn them all on low. Have some soft music playing. Scents will help to create emotion. In years past, we would leave a drop of vanilla on a light bulb. W hen the agent turned on the light, t he heat would release t he v a n i l l a f r a g r a nc e into the air. Times have c h a nge d a nd now w e ca n si mply pu rcha se sma l l a i r f resheners. While some fragrance is good, too much can be overpowering. If you have t i me, r u n t he vacuu m cleaner over the carpets. Buyer’s notice when the carpets look like nobody h a s w a l k e d on t hem . While you may love your pets, ma ny people a re afraid of them and they of ten get i n t he w ay. Taking your pets with you during the showing time is the best idea. Some dogs a re crate-t ra i ned and sit quietly in their crate. However, there’s nothing more annoying
than listening to a barking dog the whole time you’re viewing a home. Don’t be there when the agent and the buyers a r r i v e. It ’s a w k w a r d a nd ma kes t he buyers uncomfortable. Buyers want to be able to peek into closets and kitchen cabinets. They want to be able to discuss what they like and don’t like w it h t he i r a ge nt a nd each ot her. I f you’re there, it will probably be a short showing! Leave the selling to the agent. Many sellers assume the showing agent will arrive ahead of time to get the home show-ready. If I’m only showing one home, I often arrive early and get the lights on. However, if I’m showing more than one home, I have t he buyers with me and we walk in at the same time for that important first impression. Buyers decide in the first 60 seconds if they like the home. Get your home show-ready and make the most of that minute! I L L I NOIS I N T E R N AT ION A L P OR T I N T RODUCES N E W E X ECU T I V E DIR ECTOR CL AY TON H A R R IS III : On the job for just 60 days, a mere two months, Clayton Harris hit the ground running and displayed his boundless ent husia sm for h is new job at t he Thursday July 7, 2016 meeting at the Calumet Area Industrial Commission, held at one of the Port’s holdings, the esteemed Ha rbor side G ol f Cou r se. A f ter g iv i ng some of t he h istor ica l background of the port, created in 1848, Harris expounded on it’s virtues. It is the virtual hub of the USA, 37th out of 99 ports in the US and the 6th largest inland port. So convenient is the port, businesses can “get to the rest of the world from here.” Harris, who directs of Board of ten, 5 appointed by the Mayor of the City of Chicago and 5 appointed by the Governor of Illinois, is charged with maintaining the viability of the port and keeping it solvent. It takes no funds from any government entity. It is self sustaining and Harris’ job is to keep it sustainable and current. The Illinois port is the largest in the Great Lakes, but up to now, it ‘lacked focus,” Harris explained. The port needs to be kept viable and is in need of a “strategic vision” as to it’s short and long term future. Harris is the ‘landlord’ of the port’s 350,000 sf or 1,500 acres of property near lake Michigan and Lake Calumet. The southern most boundary is at 130th Street. Much of that property is available for lease (a range of industria l and warehousing firms lease space from the District and more space is available “today” he noted) which is where the port will sustain itself. Harris mentioned the need for community input as to how the port’s lands may be best used and the 10th Ward Alderwoman Susan Garza, who was present noted later that she plans to determine what that input might be. The port is located completely within the 10th and largest ward in the City of Chicago. ***
