ADULT JOB FAIR

Illinois Law Now!

Question: My long-time boyfriend and I plan to move in together and are considering a “living together” contract. What should we include? Answer: So-called “living together” contracts should address property accumulated during the relationship, acquired by gift or inheritance and from before the relationship, as well as how your expenses will be paid, what happens in the event of separation or death, and how you, as a couple, may want to resolve any legal disputes that arise. Question: I’ve been doing part-time work with a handshake agreement. In one instance, I completed the work but have not yet been paid. Are oral agreements legally enforceable? Answer: Oral contracts as well as contracts “implied in fact” regarding employment and other issues can be enforceable. There are several ways to pursue collection on any outstanding payments, but none are as easy as they may have been with a written contract. Consult an attorney for information about your options. If you plan to continue with part-time work, you should ask your lawyer to draw up a form contract for you to document your pay rate and the expectations of a specific job. Question: Why is it important to have “title” to a property? Answer: Having title means you legally own the property. But even with title, problems can arise that make it defective. Most home buyers purchase title insurance to protect themselves from financial loss in case title problems surface. The onetime payment, which is determined based on the value of your property, will cover the cost of your legal defense should the need arise.
