Stroke and Osteoporosis Screenings Residents living in and around the Harvey, Illinois community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. Ingalls Memorial Hospital Professional Building will host Life Line Screening on 5/31/2014. The site is located at 71 W. 156th St. in Harvey. John Kost from Western Springs, IL, participated in a Life Line Screening event in April of 2008 and learned he had an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He writes, “I want to thank you and your organization for saving my life!” This event is being Sponsored By: Ingalls Health System Four key points every person needs to know: • Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of permanent disability • 80% of stroke victims had no apparent warning signs prior to their stroke • Preventive ultrasound screenings can help you avoid a stroke • Screenings are fast, noninvasive, painless, affordable and convenient Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhy thm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women. Packages start at $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. Library Seeking Authors of Teen and Children’s Books The Lake County Public Library is seeking local authors of teen and children’s books for a Summer Book Fair scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at the Merrillville Branch. Christ Our Savior Catholic School 8th grade students, Jalen Miles and Ifeoma Egbuna, were selected as one of the top 100 finalists for the writing contest, “Do the “Write” Thing Chicago Challenge 2014.” This contest is a national campaign to stop violence. Over 1,100 essays/poems were received from area schools. Jalen and Ifeoma, along with others selected from around the Chicagoland area, were honored at a Recognition Awards event dinner on Tuesday, April 29 at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
