Stroke and Osteoporosis Screenings Residents living in and around the Harvey, Illinois community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. Ingalls Memorial Hospital Professional Building will host Life Line Screening on 5/31/2014. The site is located at 71 W. 156th St. in Harvey. He writes, “I want to thank you and your organization for saving my life!” This event is being Sponsored By: Ingalls Health System Four key points every person needs to know: • Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of permanent disability • 80% of stroke victims had no apparent warning signs prior to their stroke • Preventive ultrasound screenings can help you avoid a stroke • Screenings are fast, noninvasive, painless, affordable and convenient Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhy thm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women. Packages start at $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. Humane Society’s Annual Animal Baby Shower Grows in Popularity The three-legged kitten, Chubbs, was one of many animals showered with gifts from the community during Hu m a ne S oc iet y C a lu met A re a’s (HSCA) increasingly popular Annual Animal Baby Shower held Tuesday, April 8. The shelter’s kennels a nd parking spaces were maxed out as the shelter hosted more than 100 guests in an open house style. The annual shower started several yea rs ago by volu nteers who had a desire to help animals and animal lovers meet while drawing donations to the shelter. Guests bring a donation gift to enter the shelter and enjoy visiting the animals. “It’s a good way to help get people acqua inted w it h t he a nima ls a nd the shelter,” said Elaine Hower y of Hig h la nd, co-creator of t he event a nd eig ht-yea r vetera n volu nteer. What started as a little known event has grown because of word of mouth invitations, advertising by the shelter and coverage from local newspapers. “It’s a fun event that supports puppies and kittens. Everybody loves puppies a nd k it tens. It a lso suppor t s t he Humane Society.” The first shower drew about 25 people while last year’s event filled a single room w it h g uests and baby anima ls. The shelter’s open house layout this year, which drew 100 people, invited the overflow of guests to tour the facilities, visit the animals and enjoy refreshments served next door at the Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic. shelves w it h food, bedd i ng , a nd cleaning and recreation supplies for the shelter animals. “T he Hu ma ne Societ y is luck y because not only do they have great volunteers but the community supports us so much,” said Howery. She also believes much of the shower’s growth is because people have become more concerned with animals’ well-being. “I love animals,” said Sarah Bromels of Dyer as she cradled one of five a rescued pups. “I felt bad that they don’t have homes. Hopefully if we spread the word more people will adopt.” Bromels donates to the shelter and said she decided to come after reading about the shower in the newspaper. She also said she hoped to adopt two kittens before the night was over. Several guests filled out applications for adoption t hat evening.

For t hos e w ho c a n not adopt , Howery suggests fostering. “We are always desperate for fosters for kittens and puppies.” After retiring and before co-creating t he A nima l Baby Shower, Hower y found her niche in fostering animals for HSCA, a service she continues. A catlover since her first cat, Fuzzy, at age four, Howery now takes care of lost or abandoned kittens eight weeks old and younger. Among those is Chubbs, a threelegged, female kitten with a climbing fetish. Chubbs’ leg was tangled in her birthing cord and surgically removed when she was one week old. Chubbs was popular with children and adults alike and is still looking for a good home. About Humane Society Calumet Area Founded by concerned citizen Miss Evely n Sweit zer i n 1941, Hu ma ne Society Calumet Area aims to lead t h e c om mu n it y i n t h e hu m a n e treatment of animals by providing vital community services. In the past year, more than 1,800 homeless animals found homes through HSCA and many lost animals were reunited with their families. Additional HSCA ser vices include spay a nd neuter surgeries for families with financial hardship at the Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic, pet therapy teams who visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities and a humane education team that teaches local children about pet safety and compassion.

KAWA’S FAMILY HAIR CARE
Featuring Loretta Anne Woodward Veney Author, Being My Mom’s Mom
Throughout her life, Loretta has chronicled family events through journals, photos, and videos, seeking to capture every moment. After learning that her beloved mother Doris was the first female in the family to suffer from dementia, Loretta began documenting the details of doctor visits, and recording people, places, and things as a substitute for her Mom’s lost memory.
CELEBRATING 15 YEARS
The combination of written documentation and her incredible memory became Loretta’s first published work, entitled Being My Mom’s Mom. Through her book, Loretta offers practical ideas and a wealth of encouragement for her readers. Don’t miss your opportunity to learn from Loretta and hear her speak about her journey. Seating is limited, so make your reservation early. Adult day care will be provided by qualified staff. Please ask for this service when making your reservation.

Knowing God Through Family ANNA M. CAISON
On April 25th my mother would have celebrated her 79th birthday. She died on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2006 at 11:30pm. I never realized how much my life mirrored my mother’s life until recently. As teens and young adults we witness the weaknesses of our parents and vow never to make the same mistakes they made. And many times without realizing it (perhaps because we judged without knowledge) we find ourselves walking in their shoes. I’ve also followed her in the good things she accomplished in life. She was an avid learner and teacher of the Word of God. I too share her passionate devotion to God and His Word. We both served as ministers in our local church, and we’ve written teaching materials and booklets to edify and encourage the Body of Christ. In her mid-fifties, my mom wrote a religious column for a community newspaper (Bulletin-Chicago). Since July of 2011 I’ve been writing Christian articles for this community newspaper (I’m in my late fifties). One for m of w r it i ng my mot her excelled in was poetry (a form I struggle w it h). T he fol low i ng is one of her favorites. “The Harmony of Life” by Cordelia Ann
Webster Life is full of harmony somewhat like a song Full of the good that we have done And also full of the wrong. Smiles and laughter, sorrows and tears Follow us all down through the years The miracle of birth, a part of each day And the mystery of death, quietly slipping loved ones away. Yet, life is good I say For we know that to live is to die To laugh and be happy and then to cry And as I grow on in years I find life sweeter even with all of its sorrows and tears For I’ve found the hope and joy of ages past And it’s built on God and I know it will last. I’ve found the light of life at last, A light that cannot be surpassed By the sorrows and tears life before me besets Yes, life is like a song full of harmony as long as my God walks along beside me. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES One time, I was out jogging. I tripped on the sidewalk and rolled into a bush. Scraped up my arm. I was a long way out, and all I could do was dream of home. T he men of t he SS Peter Si lvester L iber t y Ship were drea ming of home, too. They didn’t simply trip into a bush though. These men were attacked and left for dead. And then, after they were rescued and nursed back to health, they returned to work. Not home. Read about it as we cont i nue Sg t. L ew is Haan’s WWII letter: But, now, we are all together in Perth, Australia except for the Navy men that were on the ship and th e Merch ant Mar in e . They are all back in the states now and get 30 days furlough at home, being survivors—which the Navy an d Merch ant Mar in e always get when they are torpedoed, but not the Army of course. Someday I am going to find out why too, because we went through the same thing they did. I will find out why even if I have to write the President even though it won’t do me no good. But anyway, we have had so far a nice 4 ½
month vacation out of it doing nothing but eating and sleeping except that I am working for a Colonel now who has his office in the city, but I volunteered for that. He is the US Army Representative in Perth, and he is the only US Army here, and he needed somebody to work in the office. I drive for him too. I took the job because you get a private hotel room and all. We have been having a nice life and doing a lot of sleeping and gained back all the weight we lost and a little more. We are allowed to wear one Battle Star now on our Campaign Ribbons, which counts 5 points for getting out of the Army, and we were also recommended for the Purple Star Medal which is for wound s received in enemy action. It’s for cuts and the bad feet we had when we were first picked up. To be continued… Marjorie Alice DeVries is a f reela nce w r iter devoted to sha ring t he priceless treasure of war letters, each one a unique w indow into a life that once was. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS
‘Coffee with the Mayor’ is held every month at the Dorchester Senior Center. This Saturday – May 10 at 8:30 Dolton Mayor Riley H. Rogers invites all residents of Dolton to bring their issues and concerns—where he can personally answer them and work on resolving them. Several business owners will be on hand to inform Dolton residents about interior home repairs and exterior maintenance. These coffees are for one
purpose - to make the Village of Dolton a better place to live. No concern is too small or too large to be addressed. You cannot make a positive change in your Village unless you are concerned and involved. Take advantage of this monthly opportunity and be heard. Bring your suggestions and ideas directly to the Mayor. We hope to see you on Saturday May 10 at 8:30 am.

Question: We made an offer on a home a month ago. It was lower than the asking price because the home needs a lot of work. The seller did not respond although he kept saying he would counter. Last week we found that another offer was being submitted by a third party. We went ahead and made a full price offer on the home. Now the seller still has not chosen an offer. The last we heard was that he was checking to see if he could get the title. He said all week he would make a decision that day, the days end and no decision. We have had $1,000 in earnest money tied up for a month. This is our dream home and we don’t even want to look at others. We now have someone interested in our home and don’t know what to do. Is there any action or anything we can do to force the seller to make a decision? We really want this house.
Otherwise, what have you bought? You should have a real estate broker help you.
Answer: Let’s look at where you stand: First, t he sel ler has responded. The effective answer to your offer is “no”. Second, a seller cannot be forced to counter-offer. T h i rd, no mat ter how at t ract ive the home, you need a sale offer which absolutely requires the owner to deliver good, marketable and insurable title.

Question: Is a seller required to pay for a proper t y inspect ion? I a lready did a separate pest inspection, but my Agent wants me to also pay for a home inspection. Isn’t this an expense for the buyer? Answer: A professional home inspection and a termite inspection are different. One is not a substitute for the other. You could have a contract where the seller, as a condition of the transaction, agrees to pay for a home inspection and a pest inspection by inspectors named by the purchaser. However, in the usual case such inspections are underwritten by the purchaser and for a good reason, to assure that the inspectors are absolutely independent of the owner.

What’s Price Got To Do With It? MIKE BUDER In 1984 Tina Turner released a number one top single titled “What’s L ove G ot To Do W it h It”. I think Tina should release a remake of her classic h it. T he new version can be dedicated to stubborn sellers who refuse to lead the market with a competitive price. The new song would be ent it led “W hat ’s P r ice G ot To D o W i t h It ? ” Ever y thing, Tina would reply in her timely tune. The ot her day I was eva luat i ng a home for a seller that had expired with another real estate broker after 12 mont hs on the market. I asked the seller why they felt their home remained unsold. The reply caused me to moment a r i ly close my eyelids and roll my eyes. The seller said, “It can’t b e t he pr ic e”. Re a l l y ! Their small home is neat a nd t idy but sit s on a major arterial street. The selling solution is simple. Move the property away from the busy street or per iod ic a l ly lower t he price. Selling a house does not have to take longer than the gestation period f or a b a b y. It s hou ld not take several agents, severa l tou rs, mu lt iple open houses, dozens of h e l i u m b a l l o on s t i e d to sig n s, ba ke d bread a r om a s , S a i nt Jo s e ph
statues, da i ly novenas, pi lg r i m a ge s to s ac re d shrines or incense a nd peppermints. For Tina’s sake, lower the price. A sage once said, “The only constant is change”. The world is cha nging. Pe op l e a r e c h a n g i n g . The rea l estate ma rket is cha ng ing. The stock ma rket cha nges. St yles change. Why can’t sellers rea l i z e pr ices need to cha nge to attract more buyers and better offers? Personally, I feel Saint Joseph has better things to do than help sellers locate buyers for properties that are overpriced. From my 32 years of selling homes in the South Suburbs of Chicago my words of w isdom for a seller going into the 2014 real estate market are “A house properly priced is half-sold.” If you are looking to buy or sel l rea l estate ca ll Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E -m a i l : m i k e b u d e r @ r em a x . ne t , Web s it e : w w w.BuderHomes. com. Medicare Tardiness Messed Medical Bills WOODROW WILCOX A client of t his insurance agency visited my of f ic e for help on Ma r c h 21, 2014. T he client is from Merrillville, Indiana. The client had cancelled his insurance coverage from his employer’s g roup pla n and made Medicare his pr i m a r y i n s u r a nc e i n De c ember 2013. But , after December 31, 2013, h is med ica l bi l ls were not getting paid because Medicare had not updated his records to show that Medicare was his primary i n s u r a nc e. T he bi l l s started piling up. When he met with me, Medicare had ref used to help him with over $3,000 of medical bills. We checked with his e m p l o y e r ’s p e r s o n n e l department. They had done everything correctly. W hen he ter m inated coverage w it h t heir g roup i n su r a nc e, t hat depa r t ment had sent a not ic e of i n su r a nc e coverage termination to Medicare. With our client in my office to give permission f or m e t o s p e a k a nd question for him, I phoned Me d i c a r e . I l e a r n e d t hat Med ica re had not processed the paperwork for t he sw itch. A ll t he claims were being denied because Medicare claims r e v ie w e r s ne v e r w e r e not if ied of a sw itch in coverage. We r e q u e s t e d t h a t the client’s Medicare file be updated immediately. A while later, we phoned Medicare again to learn i f it had been done.
Medicare finally changed the records on our client on March 24, 2014 when the sw itch should have been made on or about January 1, 2014. To help ou r c l ie nt , I t y p e d a letter that explained the problem and asked t he medical service providers who were billing him to resubmit their claims to Med ica re. T hat shou ld solve our client’s medical bill problems. O u r c l ient d id not cause this problem. His employer did not cause t h i s problem . Neit her t he hospita l nor t he doctors who served him caused this problem. This i n s u r a nc e a genc y d id not cause this problem. Me d ic a r e c au s e d t h i s problem. But, I and this insurance agency helped t he cl ient to solve t he problem. All the help that I gave to this client was FREE OF CHARGE. Does your i nsu ra nce agenc y g ive this high level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill c a se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t hat i nsu ra nce agenc y over one million dollars by cor rec t i ng med ic a l bill problems that were caused by m ista kes i n the Medicare system. Can a housing counselor save your home?
ARTHUR V. VEAL IV T he housi ng ma rket has changed drastically over t he last few years. T here is no stone t hat has been left unturned. Rules changes have gone in affect for mortgages, cred it, appra isa ls, a nd even how a proper t y is repa ired. One of t he biggest cha nges I have seen is the implementation of cou nsel i ng ser v ices. C ou n s e l i n g f or c r e d it repa ir or f irst t ime homeowners has become much more mainstream than in the past. There i s a l so c ou n sel i ng for fa m i l ies t hat ca n’t pay t hei r mor t ga ge. Today I p o s e t h i s q u e s t i on . I s a l l t h i s c ou n s el i ng rea l ly helpi ng pe ople ? Do families actually end up better off by going to some form of counseling compared to a family that doesn’t get counseling? I have been to several of t hese counseling prog ra ms a nd I have thought about becoming a counselor for different parts of the home buying process. In my opinion most families that receive c ou n sel i ng do end up making better decisions t ha n t hose t hat ig nore counseling ef for ts. The goal of counseling is not to tel l you what to do. Counseling doesn’t usually f i x you r problem . But counseling does give you clear cut options on what will most likely help you solve your problem. People who have cred it issues or are hav ing mortgage problems often don’t know what to do next and they feel that their situation is very unique. So it’s good to get a licensed professionals
opinion on what to do. I am a big advocate for u nbia sed cou nsel i ng. Unbia se d c ou n sel i ng i s w hen t he cou n selor does not f i na ncia l ly gain directly from your situation. For example if you owe $2 to a bank and you go ask a bankruptcy a t t o r n e y, u n l e s s t h e y have very strong integrity they will tell you that you shou ld f i le ba n k r uptc y even if it may not be the best option for you. You always want to get help from someone who w ill not prof it f rom eit her decision that you make. After all, in all honesty your situation is unique and only you can see the whole picture of where you are and where you actually want to go. So if someone offers you free counseling, look at the angle that the counselor is coming from and if they seem unbiased then listen to their advice intently. If you are unsure if t hey w i l l prof it f rom your decision process then ask t hem direct ly, “A re you going to profit from me in a ny way on t h is decision?” It’s an honest question and it deserves an honest answer. Consider counseling to help you get from where you are to where you want to be. We all need help at some point in our lives. Unt i l nex t we ek… A r t h u r V. Watch for Different Risk Levels of “Muni” Bonds BOB KRYGSHELD A re you t hink ing of invest ing in municipa l bonds? If so, you may have good reason, particularly if you are in one of the h ig her ta x bracket s. After all, municipal bond interest payments typically are exempt from federal income taxes, and possibly state and loca l income ta xes, too — a lt houg h some “munis” a re subject to the alternative minimum tax. However, since not all municipal b ond s a r e t h e s a m e , you’ll want to know the differences — especially in terms of risk. Mu n icipa l bond s, l i ke c or por ate bond s, essentially face two types of risk: interest rate risk and default risk. Interest rate risk becomes clear when market interest rates rise, causing the value of your existing municipal bonds to fall. No one will pay you full price for your bonds when newly issued bonds carry a higher rate — so if you plan on selling bonds before they mature, you risk losing principal. You ca n la rgely ig nore this type of risk simply by holding your bonds until maturity, at which point you will receive the face value back, provided the issuer doesn’t default. A nd t hat brings us to t he second t y pe of r isk : defau lt r isk . Historica lly, municipa l bond default rates have been much lower t ha n those of corporate bonds, particularly lower-quality bonds. But different types of municipal bonds carry different levels of default risk. Here’s a quick look at the two main categories of municipals and their risk characteristics: • General obligation bonds — G ener a l obl ig at ion bonds generally finance projects of a municipality. A genera l obl igat ion bond issuer is required to do ever y t hing in its power, including raising new taxes, to ensure that interest payments are paid on time and in full. This requirement helps support the creditworthiness of general obligation bonds. • Revenue bonds — Revenue bonds , which finance schools, hospitals, utilities, airports,
22
affordable housing and other public works, are paid by dedicated streams of revenue. For example, revenues generated by the sewer system pay the interest on a sewer system revenue bond. Because revenue bonds have more restricted revenue streams than general obligation bonds, they are generally viewed to be riskier. To compensate for the added risk, revenue bonds usually pay a higher rate of interest than general obligation bonds. W hen st udy i ng t he risk factors of revenue bond s, you a l s o h ave to consider the t y pe of revenue bond involved. For exa mple, some sectors, such as housing and health care, may be more volatile, as are some industrial revenue bonds. (These bonds, which are generally used to support a specific project, such as a new manufacturing faci l it y, a re sponsored by a government entity — but the proceeds go to a pr ivate, for-prof it business.) Of course, when eva luating t he risk potent ia l of mu n icipa l bonds, you don’t have to rely on g uess work . The major bond rating a g e n c ie s — St a nd a r d & Poor’s, Moody’s a nd Fitch — review municipal bonds to determine their creditworthiness. There are no guarantees, but by sticking with the bonds t h a t a r e “ i n v e s t m e nt g r a de,” y ou c a n help reduce the risk of owning a bond that goes into default. Municipal bonds can be valuable additions to your por t folio. Besides providing income that’s f r e e of fe der a l t a x e s, these bonds offer you a chance to help support valuable projects in your community. But, as we’ve seen, different “munis” have different risk factors — so make sure you know exactly what type of bond you’re purchasing before you write the check. T h e A m a z i n g S pi d e rMan 2 (2014) PG-13 - 142 min - Action | Adventure | Fantasy - 2 May 2014 (USA) SY NOPSIS : Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of supervillains against him, impacting on his life. REVIEW: Peter Parker is back to fight The Rhino, Electro, and The Green Goblin in ‘The Amazing Spider-Ma n 2’ sta r r ing Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti, a nd S a l l y F i e l d . W i l l this web slinging sequel surpass fans’ expectations or i s it b a s ic a l l y t he ‘B a t m a n & R o b i n’ o f Spider-Man flicks? Be warned, in order to explain some of the pros and cons of the movie, I do have to reveal some slight spoilers, but in all honesty, if you’ve seen the trailers and featurettes, you’ve already seen 90% of the important parts of the movie anyway. W h at r e a l l y m a ke s ‘T he A m a z i ng SpiderMa n 2’ a bit h a rd to follow is that the movie is all over the place. You have a love stor y, three v i l l a i n or ig i n s tor ie s, t he myster y of Richard Parker’s disappearance, and on top of that, a secret evil Oscorp organization that you have no idea who exactly they work for, but con spi re even aga i n st Ha r r y a nd cont i nue experiments in an almost Arkham Asylum facility c a l le d t he R avenc rof t Institute. They seem to be led by the mysterious f ig ure in t he dark coat and hat that talked to Dr Connors in his jail cell at the end of the first movie. Now the movie looked great, (Espcially in 3D) but the pacing and r y thy m was all over the place. It is also filled with a ton of Sony product placements l i ke Va io laptops a nd completely out-of-place
songs that just didn’t fit the tone of the movie. It felt like the movie wanted to push up and coming recording artists under t he Sony label by just inserting a random song throughout the movie. A ll in all, ‘The A m a z i n g S p i d e r- M a n 2’ w a s a s p e c t a c u l a r disappointment. From the trailers, I was expecting some of the most ultimate battles and foes SpiderMan has ever faced, but it just didn’t happen. I t h i n k my d isappoi nt ment comes from the fact that I believe t he f i lm was made for casua l a nd you nger aud iences. To me as a huge fan of superheroes, I feel the movie is a bit of an insult to what I love about the mytholog y of t he cha racters. Casua l a ud ie nc e s w i l l w a t c h this and think that what I l i k e a b ou t t h e m i s childish, and I wouldn’t blame them because this was not at all made with a s oph i s t ic a t e d a du lt audience in mind. It was made for young kids to sell Spider-Man merchandise, Sony Products, and Sony record i ng a r t ists’ MP3 downloads. If I was ten, I’d probably love this movie because I grew up loving ‘The Amazing Spider-Man and Friends’ with Iceman and Firestar on Saturday mornings. ‘The Amazing SpiderMan 2’ felt like a rushed hodge podge of ide a s thrown together in order to meet a deadline so that Sony wouldn’t lose t he r ig hts back to Ma r vel/ Disney. I can admit that t h i s f l ick may not be the ‘Batman & Robin’ of Spider-Man movies, but it sure is li ke ‘Bat ma n Forever’. The romance between Peter and Gwen turned i nto somet h i ng f rom Tw ilight, Electro is Jim C a r re y ’s R idd ler f rom B a t m a n F o r e v e r, t h e Green Goblin origin and motivation was goofy, and the Rhino was basically t he Under m i ner f r om The Incredibles. If you watched the trailers and clips, you prett y much have already seen the best parts of the movie and the parts you didn’t see you won’t want to anyway. If you didn’t like the f irst mov ie, then you’ll proba bl y not l i ke t he sequel at all. On a scale of 1-10, I give this one a 5 My 2¢ -B

as N 2 N bought some flowers for a client who just sold her Mom’s house in Hegewisch. Seller Carol lives in Whiting and was such a good sport during a challenging real estate transaction, that the least Yours Truly, her Broker, could do was to reward her with a beautiful floral arrangement that Connie personally put together! Many, many more great years at Whiting Florist! ***
