First Depositor For Park Place Looks Forward To New Community Park Place of St. John is expected to be complete in early fall of 2016, but Dolores Kubal is already looking forward to moving into the senior living community.

Kubal, 85, of Calumet City, Ill., was the first to put down a deposit for the newest Providence Life Services community, reserving first pick of the retirement living apartments when the choice becomes available later this year.

When asked how it feels to be the first depositor on the list, Kubal struggled to sum up her feelings.

“It feel s… fa nt a st ic. E x h i la rat i ng. E mpower i ng , overwhelming — I don’t know, there’s no adjective I can think of,” she said. “It feels like the best adjective you can find.”

Minutes later, however, she found the perfect words.

“I know what it feels like! I watch Wheel of Fortune, and it feels like I just won the million dollars.”

Seven floor plans will be available for Kubal to choose from, with options for one or two bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, and a garage, patio or balcony. The building will also have plenty of community space, including a lounge with a fireplace, dining rooms, a library, clubroom, fitness

On Sunday, March 1, 2015, Mr. Earl McKay was accompanied by two of our students, Mr. Michael Cross and Mr. Mycah Brooks, Jr. as Mr McKay received the 2015 Archbishop James P. Lyke,OFM Aftrican American Male Image Award. This award was presented to him by the Ladies Auxailary of the Knights

of St. Peter Claver. In addition to this award, Mr. Cross and Mr. Brooks, both seniors at Seton Academy Col lege Prep received scholarship awards. Accompanying them is Dr. Kathryn Worthen, board member of Seton Academy and member of the Ladies Auxailary of the Knights of St. Peter Claver.

Last year I was privilege to officiate the home going of a Christian Woman who for the past 7 years had been subject to Alzheimer’s disease. The thought of developing Alzheimer’s disease during the latter years of my life has always frightened me. It’s the one fact of aging that I fear the most-----losing my memory.

I didn’t know Margaret during the early years of her life. When I met her she had already developed the disease.

At the time, I was leading a team that conducted worship services in the homes of members who were no longer able to physically come to church. Sometimes, when we came to worship with Margaret and her spouse, she would be agitated and sometimes she appeared to be totally unaware that we were there; this is, until the service began. One of the women on the team played the violin. And every time she played her violin a change would come over Margaret. She would become relaxed and her facial expression was meditative as if she was processing the entire service. A spirit of peace emanated from her. Even more startling, during

A s I s ou g ht G o d’s d i r e c t ion i n preparing the eulogy one thought rang clearly in my mind, “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” It was then that I understood the change in Margaret whenever we came to worship in her home. God was ministering to her. He was w it h her. They were in communion together.

A lt houg h I hope I never develop A lzheimer’s disease, I no longer fear it! W hen I think about Margaret and t he sweet presence of t he Lord t hat overshadowed her during worship; I know that if I develop Alzheimer’s or any other type of dementia, God will be with me!

I am Ray Banks. The Executive Director of Restoration Ministries working and serving families in Harvey and South Holland. I previously served on District 205 Board and was recently re-appointed to fill a vacancy. I am now running to finish the term I was appointed to just last month. I accepted the appointment and I am running because I believe education is the foundation to a better life. So many of society’s problems are the result of a lack of a good education. I know and understand the needs of the community and I have the compassion, and the administrative skills obtained from managing a successful not for profit to serving on the Board of District 205. I’m qualified to help turn the District 205 around. I am running because education and the quality of our schools, and not legal fees should be the Board’s priority.

I am Albert “Al” Butler, Jr. A retired teacher, who taught African American History at Thornwood High School in District 205. My wife and I, and our children are residents of Dolton. In 2011 I was privileged to be part of a team that included parents, teachers, board members and community leaders to create a new comprehensive Strategic Plan for District 205.

This plan was to ensure tax dollars were spent wisely, educational opportunities were provided for our students and that our schools were competitive with schools across Illinois. Unfortunately this plan was never used. I am running to use my experience as a teacher and parent to make sure that the Schools in District 205 are equal to schools in every other part of Illinois as they once were. I am running because education and not board in-fighting should be the priority.

A school district’s first priority is to educate our children in a way that maximizes their potential. A quality education is a foundation that students can build on their entire life. A school district must also oversee the business part of managing your tax dollars. I am running to put my business experience to work for the District. Our tax dollars need to be spent wisely on the important priorities - and not wasted. I am running because we should not be spending money on board in-fighting and legal fees but investing tax dollars into our children’s education.

I have a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University and I have 15 years experience on the South Holland School Board for District 150.

I am running because I want to bring my knowledge and experience as a teacher and board member to work for district 205. I know what it takes to run an effective school board and good schools – something that all the tax payers of District 205 are entitled. I will work to make sure the families and residents of 205 receive the quality education their tax dollars are paying for.

I am Annette Whittington. A member of the Thornton Township Human Rights Commission and for more than 12 years I was a principal parent advisor in School District 205. My husband, Alderman Joseph Whittington and I have raised 3 graduates of District 205.

We are proud that they went on to successful college careers and one is now in dental school. I am running because in recent years the district board has not been providing the leadership necessary to ensure the children and families today have the opportunities my children had. I want to bring my knowledge and experience to the District because I understand what our children need to fulfill their potential and reach their dreams.

We all pay our taxes to provide a quality education for our youth and we need a Board who will fight to invest in our children. I am running to help restore honesty and integrity to the board.

College Step-Up Program Hitting Its Stride

Since 2008, the College Step-Up program has saved District 215 families more than $247,000 in college tuition. The College Step-Up Program, a college credit enrollment program between South Suburban College and District 215, provides Thornton Fractional North and South students the opportunity to earn up to 18 college credits – six each semester starting with the summer after their junior year. Pictured above are current students from TF North who are participating in the program.

More than 550 students have participated in the program since its inception seven years ago. By earning these credits while they are still in high school, students get a head start on their college education by completing general education courses. The College Step-Up Program enables students to reduce the time and money they spend obtaining a college degree.

Program Coordinators Susan Barnhart and Jennifer Donovan indicate that the program is well received by students and their families. Donovan noted the program offers students the chance to experience college life and explore potential college majors. Though many District 215 students participate in the program at no tuition cost to their families, other students pay reduced tuition costs with the remaining balance being paid by District 215 and South Suburban College. The credits that students earn are transferable to any college or university. Research has shown that students in dual enrollment programs are more likely to graduate from high school, enroll in a four-year college or university, and complete a college degree.

South Suburban College President Don Manning commented on the community benefits of the Step-Up program. “This collaborative agreement between South Suburban College and High School District 215 is good for the entire community. The high school students and their families save money on tuition and the students become highly motivated, in that they have earned college credit while still in high school,” Manning noted. According to Superintendent Creg E. Williams, the College-Step Program is a critical part of the district’s strategy to give students a competitive advantage as they pursue higher education and foster a college-going culture in its schools, which are comprised mostly of first-generation college students. “Through this partnership with South Suburban College, we are able to ensure that more of our students are college and career ready,” Williams said. Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush is an active supporter of the program. Mayor Michelle commented, “Any extra investment we make today in our students will pay for itself many times over in the future. I’m grateful to both South Suburban College and District 215 for their long range vision and investment in the well-being of our students.”

On Ma rch 9, 2015, I received a phone call from a very happy senior citizen cl ient f rom De Mot te, India na. She repor ted to me that my letter to a hospital on her behalf had worked to reduce a bill by over $120.

W hen she f i rst met w it h me a nd br ou g ht t he hospita l bi l l to my office, I reviewed it and t hen phoned bot h her insurance company and Me d ic a re w it h her to discuss the problem. I learned that the bill was for “Sel f-Ad m i n istered Dr ugs” a nd it w a s for $148.26. Neither Medicare nor her Medicare supplement i n su r a nc e would pay for these drugs because of rat her new Medicare rules written in 2009 by Attorney General Eric Holder.

Holder w rote new definitions for “in-patient” a nd “out-p a t ie nt ” f or sen iors who v isit a hospital. Both doctors and hospitals must use these definitions or Medicare will pay nothing. Under t he new def i n it ions, it is possible for a senior citizen on Medicare to stay overnight in a hospital, but be considered a nd out-patient. If a medical s e r v ic e i s g i v e n t o a senior in a hospital who is legally defined as an out-p at ient , Me d ic a r e won’t help to pay for medicines taken while in a hospital. Out-patients are covered by Medicare Pa r t B wh ich does not pay for prescript ion or non-prescription drugs.

In-patients are covered by Medicare Part A and do get help with prescription a n d n o n-p r e s c r i p t i o n drugs while in a hospital.

She said Clint graduated and came to Chicago to spend a week with them. After that he went to Wyoming to spend a couple of days with his folks, and from there he was going to San Francisco to be assigned to a ship.

He’s an ensign in the Navy.

I can’t figure out why Shirl and the baby didn’t go with him to see his folks.

After all, they’ve never seen the baby. Maybe Shirl doesn’t get along very well with them, which is easily understandable.

Answer: When selling or buying a home, you need to think ahead about what you are actually selling along with the property and the house. The general rule is, “if it attached to the structure or the ground, it is real property and stays with the house.” For example, curtains are attached, but will the sellers leave them?

They may match the decor in the seller’s next home. What if they take them and the buyers assumed they would stay? This can cause a disagreement. Disagreements tend to move from minor issues to major issues, because emotions rule and logic melts away.

So if you want to take your curtains with you, put it in the contract. Don’t “assume” anything.

Buyers and sellers can argue about the silliest things. Believe it or not, there is a story about how a deal almost fell apart

On Wednesday, March 11, 2015 Frank M. Zuccarelli, Supervisor Thornton Township attended the Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Net work a n nou ncement of t he Mayors For Hope Conference, a coalition of South Suburban Mayors. Also in attendance were Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

Zuccarelli, made a passionate plea for support of organ donor programs. The Conference was inspired by Monica Fox, the relative of a South Suburban Mayor.

Fox representing Advocate For Hope is in need of a kidney organ. She and Supervisor Zuccarelli have a lot in common, as he revealed that he is a kidney organ recipient.

Zucc a rel l i st ated to t he aud ience, “I struggled so much, I wanted to die. The pain was horrible. About four years ago, doctors told me my kidneys were failing and I had to go on dialysis.” “Monica, they told me you had dialysis today and you came here for this event. You are truly a strong woman,” said Zuccarelli.

My Broker/Owner seems to think the market will cont i nue to stead i ly improve…it sure has in our office this past month.

Another area broker feels that we will have very slow growth this year, if any.

He said that his opinion wa s ba sed on t he fact that there are still quite a few foreclosures lurking in the shadows and not a lot of qualified buyers in our area. As for me, I don’t ma ke predictions on the market! I will leave that to the economists so

The district covers 883 square miles and provides wholesale wastewater treatment for over 5 million residents in Cook County. The District

operates seven wastewater treatment plants which treat over 1.4 billion gallons a DAY! The District also provides regional storm water services and has been a leader in the industry since it’s creation in 1889.

David himself has been in the business for the past 30 years and is committed to ensuring this rich tradition of leadership under his tenure. Basically Mr. St. Pierre explained how our water is treated for safety, new methods of disinfection and how the District is working in other venues like the deep tunnel in the Thornton Reservoir which will open this May and will handle 7.9 Billion gallons of wastewater. This should help to eliminate wet basements and flooding that has plagued the south suburbs for decades.

His talk also included a whole semesters’s worth of biology and water conservation.
