New Year, New Gallery For Purdue The lease has been sig ned a nd the keys have been made as Purdue University Calumet looks to welcome the New Year with a new off campus gallery in the Hessville area on 6725 Kennedy Ave. The process is in development as the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Communication and Creative Arts department are working w it h cont ractors to prepa re for a tentative opening date in February. Thomas J. Roach, Purdue University Calumet Communication and Creative Arts department head, said the gallery could create more opportunity for the students professionally. “It’ll be an important step for the v i s u a l c om mu n i c a t i on pr o g r a m because it g ives students ongoing oppor tunit ies for display ing work and interacting with the community,” Roach said. Yueqi Zhang, an artist and associate professor at Purdue University Calumet who teaches visual communication design, said the galler y prov ides a public showcase for our students. “It is a stage which can display student’s creative talent and works, accumulate professional experiences and approach the real world,” Zhang said. Zhang said the gallery is a bridge which connects the university and the community. He said the gallery won’t only be a venue to host group or solo ex hibit ions for t he school and the region, but it w ill prov ide

studio learning opportunities for the community as well. “ T he g a l le r y i s a w i ndo w of t he department, Zhang sa id. “The community will learn more about who we are and what we do.” The department has many ideas regarding the first opening weeks of the gallery including an alumni night and a show to display photos from the department’s Paris trip from this past summer. The Body of Christ ANNA M. CAISON Last year I went to see the much talked about movie “Selma.” My eyes were filled with tears as I thought about what my race had to endure to access freedoms and rights that were theirs as American born citizens. I normally don’t watch movies like this because of the deep emotions it evokes, stirring memories of personal encounters with racism. But a dear friend asked if I’d go with her to see the film, and I’m glad that I did. Later that evening I watched a PBS documentary that showed actual news footage of how African Americans were treated by law enforcement. Yet, in the midst of being attacked by police dogs, bodies being blown across the street by water shot from fire hoses, being kicked and beaten with billy clubs by police; I heard the words of Christ through Martin Luther King Jr. say as he was being hauled away to jail, “We will not hate you! We will love you as our brothers!” The force behind God’s call to King to prick the conscious of a nation that led to a change in government was the coming together of the Body of Christ. That was the power that brought change to Selma. Change that ref lects the Kingdom of God can only be realized through the united efforts of God’s people. We have been called to bring change to our families, neighborhoods, communities, businesses and government by living out the commands of Christ. Many risked (and lost) their lives during those civil rights marches, including our Caucasian brothers and sisters. They were not afraid to take up their cross and follow Christ. As racism seeks to regain lost ground through law enforcement and other areas of American life, the church must be ready and willing to push back the forces of darkness with the Light of the Gospel in word and deed. WOODROW WILCOX In December of 2015, a sen ior cit i zen cl ient brought unpaid medical bi l ls to my of f ice a nd asked why t he bi l ls were not bei ng pa id according to the Medicare supplement i n su r a nc e pol ic y t hat he boug ht t hrough t his insurance agency. The client is from Merrillville, Indiana. I reviewed the bills and made phone ca lls w it h the client to his insurance company and to Medicare. I requested that Medicare send copies of a l l h i s claims for several months. Once our client br ou g ht t ho s e p a p er s to our of f ice for me to compa re aga i nst t he medical bills, it was easy for me to see what t he problem wa s. I made a not her phone c a l l to Medicare with the client a nd put t he ca l l on spea ker phone so t hat t he c l ient c ou ld he a r everything. I asked the Medicare representat ive what Medicare records showed as the insurance coverage for our client. Medicare records still showed our retired client as hav ing insurance coverage t h r o u g h h i s w i f e ’s employer which was false. That insurance had ended months before our call. Med ic a re prom i sed to fix the records within ten business days. The client returned to my office for another call to Medicare on Januar y 21, 2016. I wa nted to check to make sure that Medicare had fixed the records. Medica re has disappointed our clients w it h broken prom i se s in the past. We learned

that Medicare had fixed t he cl ient ’s re c ord on January 6, 2016. That was right after we made the previous call. The Medicare records should have been changed by May 1, 2015. But, Medicare failed to update the record until January 6, 2016. Medica re was over nine months late in its record keeping of our client. During that period, A LL MEDIC A L CL A IMS W ERE PROCESSED I N C O R R E C T L Y RESULTING IN E X PE NSI V E M E DIC A L BILLS FOR OUR CLIENT. But, after the record had been corrected, I wrote to every doctor, hospital, and laboratory that sent a bill to our client. In the letter, I ex pla ined Med ica re’s mistake and asked them to refile any claim that had a balance. The processing of t he cla ims a f ter Medica re records were corrected should result in our client owing nothing. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency distinguishes itself by “going the extra mile” to help our clients with such problems. Does your insurance agency give this high level of service to its senior citizen clients? Some important conversations never seem to get started because we’re afraid we already know how they end. That’s a lot of money, of course, so it will be challenging to build such a fund – but try to contribute something each month to a liquid, low-risk account. Wit hout such an emergency fund, you might be forced to cash out your 401(k) or other retirement pla n to pay for your living expenses du r i ng you r per iod of unemployment. • Loss of health – If you were ill or injured, you might be out of work for weeks or mont hs. Your employer may offer you some t y pe of disabilit y insurance as an employee benefit, but it might not be sufficient. So you may also want to purchase an individual plan to cover as much of your a f terta x income as possible. However, policies va r y widely in cost and benefits, so you’l l wa nt to shop around for the coverage that best meets your needs. • Loss of life – Death may be an uncomfortable topic to discuss. Term insurance, as the name suggests, is designed for a specific number of years and only provides a death benefit.
