Community Health Worker Open House S o u t h S u b u r b a n C o l l e g e ’s D e p a r t me nt of A l l ie d He a lt h & Career Programs will be hosting an Open House for its newest program– Community Health Worker (CHW ) – on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Heritage Room on the college’s Main Campus in South Holland. The Community Health Worker Open House will provide information about the role of CHWs in the workforce and the classes that will be starting up soon. Faculty will be on hand to provide information on the program, answer questions and to help direct prospective students about how to get started at SSC. CHWs are frontline public health agent s who a re t r usted members of and/or have an unusua lly close u ndersta nd i ng of t he com mu n it y they serve. This trusting relationship enables CHWs to serve as a liaison between health, social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and

cultural competence of service delivery. T h e S S C C o m m u n i t y He a l t h Worker Program prepares graduates to function along a continuum ranging f rom i nd iv idua l a nd c om mu n it y development to service delivery. This program is offered as a 63 credit hour Associate Degree, a 39 credit hour Certificate, or a 20 credit hour Basic Certificate Program. The Associat ion of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded South Suburban College with a Certificate of Excellence (COE) in Financial Reporting for its preparation and issuance of a school system comprehensive annual report for Fiscal Year 2013. This represents the 24th consecutive year SSC has received the award for financial reporting. SSC Treasurer Tim Pollert presented the COE to SSC Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli at the college’s January board meeting. “This award is a reflection of our efforts to be fiscally responsible for the benefit of our students and taxpayers,” said Chairman Zuccarelli. “It is an honor and distinction to receive the COE 24 years in a row. I would like to thank our administration and staff, especia l ly ou r Business & Accou nt ing Department and Treasurer Tim Pollert for their hard work.”

The COE award is one of the highest recognitions a college can receive for their audited financial statements, confirming t he school’s com m it ment to f i na ncia l accountability and transparency. Lansing Christian Dual Language Spanish Immersion Program Lansing Christian School has enthusiastically decided to host a Community Informational Meeting to talk about its exploration of a Dual Language Spanish Immersion program. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at 7:00 pm in the school’s gym. A short interest survey will be given at the conclusion of the meeting to determine the school’s next steps. Aiming to start in Kindergarten during the 2015-16 school year, this track would be in addition to Lansing Christian’s current, exciting English-based kindergarten program. The immersion track is intended for non-native speaking Spanish students and families. Dual Language Spanish Immersion at its core is providing young students with a teacher who is fluent in the Spanish language. All instruction at the kindergarten level--math, language, science, social studies, Bible--will be done in Spanish. Students respond to the teacher in Spanish; students talk to each other in Spanish. Most of a child’s day is spent absorbing and using a second language! Lansing Christian School believes that God is the author of languages. The track was located west of Indianapolis Boulevard, bordered by 108th Street on the north, 112th Street on the south, and Avenue A to the west, just east of the Hammond/ Chicago border. The most notable cha nge is t hat t he new loans are easier to get and that makes a lot of people ner vous. Ma k i ng loa ns easier to get was one of the main things that caused the real estate bubble a few years back. A l t h ou g h t h i s i s a legitimate concern for the new rules, I personally feel that these new rules are good and will help a lot of families. One of the new deals with FHA is that you can get an FHA loan to buy a house even if you had a previous foreclosure. This is great news for families that got into a home thru a bad loan program and then lost that home. The new prog ra m says t hat you have to show that you had a real hardship (like job loss) wh ich caused you to lose your home. This makes a lot of sense b e c a u s e s om e p e op l e simply wa lked away from t heir home and if that happened then their shou ld be a pena lt y. I think this program is an excellent first step. T he nex t prog ra m change is that the credit score that is required to get an FHA loan is lower. This is good news a lso b e c a u s e m a n y p e ople have dings on their credit but they do pay their bills regularly. As a lender it is hard to figure out who pays and who is financially i r responsible. Radon is a radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless and is impossible to detect without the use of sensitive test equipment. Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced by the breakdown of Uranium in soil, water and rock. When allowed to accumulate to high levels, it can be hazardous to long term health. The Surgeon General has warned that Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. Only cigarette

smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. The EPA presently suggests that corrective actions should be taken to reduce Radon levels in your home if measured over the long term (usually 48 hours) at 4.0 PCi/l or greater. Winters in Calumet City as in the greater Chicago land area, can be hard on young and old alike, but most of all seniors seem to have more difficulties staying warm. Police Chief Edward Gilmore says his department has many safety features in place to help safeguard all residents of Calumet City. Some of t he more i mpor ta nt feat u res include knowing that there are plenty of warming centers available in the event of an emergency. The lobby of the Calumet City police station, 1200 Pulaski Road is open 24 hours a day seven days a week. Other warming locations include the Calumet City Public Library,660 Manistee, and during extreme conditions all public facilities such as TF High School can also be used. During weather extremes all year long, a citywide automated phone system called Code Red is in place warning residents who are on the call list, of damaging storms, unusual cold snaps, unusual heat and so on. The list can be tailored to different wards in the city depending upon the emergency such as a water main break, or citywide for inclement

As for our current cold wave, Gilmore stresses the importance of getting a remote start devise for our cars. “So many times, people start their cars and leave them running in front of their house to warm them up or in the garage with the door open and thieves take the car. Even if the car is locked, if they want the car they will break a window to get it,” he cautions. And common sense issues also come into play during the winter months. The chief advises us not to use stove burners or ovens for heat, not to place space heaters close to f lammable items and no gas heaters or anything that uses kerosene inside the house. Chief Gilmore advises us to check up on elderly neighbors during severe weather and keep a lookout for anyone outdoors who seems in distress. It only takes a few moments for a person to suffer from extreme cold, so be on the lookout for signs of frost bite and be on the safe side and get indoors as soon possible. A nd as a lways, in an emergency, 911 is the call to make.

We strain to hear God’s voice of direction through a sermon, or a song. We’ll pull out our Topical Bible looking for passages that mirror our situation to explain or make sense out of what we’re going through. And many times God will speak to us through others and through specific examples from the Bible. But there are also times when God will speak through the still quiet moments of a seemingly mundane task. One of the easiest to grow houseplants for me is the philodendra. I like the fact that it can be grown in water or potting soil, and it produces lush green cascading vines. I had notice that for some time one of my plants appeared to be dying. One by one its long lush vines withered, turning yellow and then brown before falling off the main branch. Yet there was new growth shooting up near the base of the

The next morning, the clipped vine had made a miraculous recover y! The leaves were no longer drooping, they were pointing upward and the green color had returned to its stem. It was here, in this unexpected moment of serene amazement that God spoke peace to me in the midst of the bewildering situation I was going through. There are seasons of growth when it becomes necessary for God to “clip” us, setting us apart from the group in order to prepare us to bear more fruit, either in a different position or in a new location for His purposes. If you talk to those who are not involved they’ll tell you what difference does it really make? That’s actually an honest question. What difference does it really make? There are many men and women who would make splendid politicians. They cou ld accomplish considerable good if t hey were g iven proper a nd equa l recognition and justice for themselves and the people. We must support effective politicians with the total backing of our population. Now, why be involved in the political process? If you turn on your lights it’s political. Buying a sticker for your car is political. Your real estate taxes - political. If all these things have to do with politics, and they do, then why not get involved so that you too can have a voice? Our democracy is not a spectator event. You can’t be on the sidelines of democracy. You have to get involved to

make a difference. You must know the issues, study the candidates, and ask the questions to get the answer that satisfies your concern. Yes, you should get involved for your self-interest. I am involved and will remain involved as long as I’m paying taxes to a school system, taxes on property, taxes at the cash register; I think you get the idea. As I w rap this up I can’t help but think of the last election in Illinois and how many people didn’t get involved for whatever their reasons were. This last election was considered a mid-term election and another election is coming up t his Febr ua r y a nd aga in in Apri l of this year. What will you do? Will you be disappointed because of the results of the mid term? Or will you do the right thing? Vote early, tell your neighbors to get involved to make the community better. Go out and vote your self-interest. But vote.

FANTASTIC FANTASIES INCARNATED By Kevin Bradley Scott Mitchell is excited. He will be sharing his passion for bringing fantasy into the real world at NWI Joliet St. Schererville, Indiana. Scott is a special effects makeup artist. He enjoys conceptualizing a fantastic character, creating it out of imagination, clay, and paint. Then bringing it to life by applying makeup to an actor. He brings his imagination to life, wielding the power to create his dreams and nightmares into real life beings for all to see. Scott, who has lived in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood all his life, grew up wanting to be Batman. He has been drawing since he was old enough to hold a pencil. Realizing he would not be Batman, Scott chose to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. Having artistic parents helped him from the get go. They supported his passion by int roducing him to comics, Aurora monster models, horror movies, and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, from which he ordered the Dick Smith Monster Make-Up Book, which was the catalyst for his career in special effects makeup. As a child, Scott enjoyed turning his friends into “monsters” using FX makeup kits his uncle supplied and costumes his grandmother sewed. As we travel through this little adventure we call life, sometimes things just don’t seem to be going our way, as if the cards a re stacked aga inst us. We somehow manage to miserably mutter through our day feeling somewhat le s s t ha n ou r s elve s…. less than a human should ever feel. It is during these times, when our mettle is tested, that we see what we are really made of. At five AM following a n even i ng snowstor m I was out shoveling the driveway so that I could get my car out and get to work. The bitter coldness was exacerbated by a n unforgiving face freezing wind. I was feeling quite m iserable. A nd t hen sudden l y I w a sn’t . A s fast as t he w ind cou ld ma ke your nostrils feel like closing up I began feeling a new found vigor from within. Why? Had I gone bonkers? No. I si mply looked at t he situat ion I was in in a completely d i f ferent manner. God, in all his wisdom, decided I needed a good morning work-out today and has provided one for me utilizing the snow.” They say He works in myster ious ways. At first all I could see and feel were the misery of being up extra early, freezing, a nd shoveling snow which I did not feel like shoveling at all. I wanted nothing more than to be back u nder t he covers of my n ice wa r m bed. H o w e v e r, s o m e w h e r e along the line something in my mind changed and I bega n to look at t he sit uat ion d i f ferent ly. I guess I began pondering, “Why God? Why are you doing this to me?” He was kind enough to allow me to understa nd t hat t he misery I was feeling was only temporary, and the physical benefits to my body from this excellent work-out would stay with me much longer. I f you a re fac i ng a d i f f ic u lt sit uat ion, t r y and look at things from a completely d i f ferent perspective. Try and find a s pa r k of s omet h i ng positive, and let your mind expand upon that spark. There are almost always alternative viewpoints. If you believe in God, ponder what His may be. Mrvan, who has a passion for veterans, has been an av id supporter of the “Veteran’s Build” project from its start. Habitat for Hu ma n it y a nd t he Northwest Indiana Veterans Action Council partnered in January of 2014 to address the need for housing in Lake County, Ind. among low income veterans. One house is currently being constructed for a designated family in Merrillville. The Tennessee house has been generously donated and will be the second. “This is a home that definitely needs work, but will become a great addition to Hessville when it is repaired,”Mrvan said.”Habitat for Humanity has the

Carmella praised the “great East Side and the people who live and work here and who have been coming to Pucci’s for generation after generation.
