Thornton Township Provides Holiday Food and Fellowship to Nearly 1,000 she plans to continue volunteering and will be seeking additional opportunities to help wherever she can. This was also the first year for Carolyn Brown and her 13 year-old son Andrew. “I was looking for a positive program for him to participate in and to help our community,” she said. Sisters Jessie Monroe and Maxine Jefferson are regular volunteers helping out at all township events. “I love what I do. The township can always depend on us to be there,” Maxine Jefferson said. Overflow Ministries, operated through the Korean United Methodist Church in Flossmoor, has been participating in the event for three years. John Harvey, missions’ coordinator, became aware of the event through Township Clerk Jacki Rivera. “We worked together doing mission work in the Harvey area for several years. This is just another way for our ministry to lend a hand,” he said. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli greeted guests and said he was pleased to see everyone celebrating the holiday season together. “This is a nice community event where we can get to know each other and show that we care for one another. When we share a meal and talk to each other we learn that we all care about the same things,” he said. “This is a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors, meet someone new, and
make a new friend or two. We live in a great community—we don’t dwell on the negative, we talk about the good in our community. There is no place better to live than Thornton Township. The more we get to know each other and work together the stronger our community becomes.” Those attending came with family and friends. Sisters Stacey and Stephanie Keller of Hazel Crest invited their friends Leonard and Terry Wisniewski of Oak Forest to attend the dinner. Stacey and Stephanie first learned of the dinner while attending South Suburban College. “This is our fourth year here. We love socializing with new people of all ages and backgrounds and enjoying a great meal and entertainment,” Stacey Keller said. “It is just wonderful to see people you haven’t seen in a year, talk with new people, and make new friends. I love the food and entertainment,” said South Holland resident Alice Coward who attended with her daughter Cindy and granddaughter Sydney. “This is also a wonderful event that gives seniors the opportunity to socialize so they don’t feel so isolated. Many have difficulty getting out and the township helps bring them here. This is one of the best events the township offers.”

By Cindy Cruz They came from throughout the south suburbs, Northwest Indiana and Chicago to enjoy food and fellowship at the 17th Annual Holiday Dinner sponsored by Thornton Township and held at South Suburban College on December 8. Originally started as a dinner to feed the homeless and those in need, the event was expanded as a way to unite the community. Nearly 1,000 people enjoyed a traditional holiday dinner provided by Jimbooos. Those in attendance also had the opportunity to win gift cards and 400 turkeys donated by individuals, community groups, local churches, area businesses and local officials. Performing at this year’s event were the Elite Praise Dance Ministry from Holy Bible Church in Harvey and the Past Life Band. Ninety five volunteers assisted with this year’s event doing setup, registration and serving the meal. For all of them participating in the event is a labor of love. This was the first year for Rita Culbreath from South Holland. “I am very excited to be here,” she said, “I was looking for volunteer opportunities so I went to the village hall and was directed to Thornton Township. I feel it is important to give back to the community,” she added. Culbreath said
