photograph of his friend who will soon be serving in the U.S. military. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one

year at the U.S. Capitol.US Congressman Pete Visclosky, of the First District of Indiana, stated, “I congratulate Lily and LaShawn, and I thank all of the Northwest Indiana students who utilized their time and talents to participate in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. It is heartening to see such creative expressions from our Northwest Indiana students, and I wish all of them the best in their continued academic and artistic studies.” For additional information on the Congressional Art Competition, visit your congressional representative’s website, or visit www.house.gov/ content/educate/art_competition/.

Highland Native Keeps Navy’s Most Advanced Aircraft Flying A 2002 Highland High School graduate and Highland, Indiana native is serving with a U.S. Navy electronic attack squadron that flies one of the Navy’s newest and most technologicallyadvanced aircraft, the EA-18G Growler. Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas Heintzman is an aviation electronics technician with the “Black Ravens” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135, one of 14 Navy electronic attack squadrons based in Whidbey Island, Washington. As an aviation electronics technician, Heintzman is responsible for fixing the aircraft avionics systems, including communications, radar, and electronic countermeasures. “I enjoy fixing aircraft,” said Heintzman. Taking off from and landing on Navy aircraft carriers, as well as supporting expeditionary land-based operations around the world, Growler crewmembers engage in electronic warfare, one of the most important components of modern air combat, according to Navy sources.

The EA-18G Growler is the fourth major variant of the F/A-18 family of aircraft that combines the proven F/A-18F Super Hornet platform with a sophisticated electronic warfare suite, complete with advanced receivers, jamming pods and satellite communications. The electronic warfare mission involves jamming enemy radar and communications systems to render air defenses ineffective. “The Navy has its ups and downs like any job, but I’m happy working on these jets and with this command,” Heintzman said. “The leadership right now, they’re some of the best leaders I’ve had in the Navy.” As a member of one of the Navy’s squadrons with the newest aircraft platforms, Heintzman and other VAQ-135 sailors are proud to be part of a warfighting team that readily defends America at all times. “We’re in the warfighting business, and we’re here to win,” said Capt. Tabb Stringer, Commodore of Commander, Electronic Attack

Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet. “We operate the most advanced and capable electronic attack aircraft in the world and our sailors are the most highly trained, innovative, and critical thinking teammates I have ever worked with.” Sailors’ jobs are highly varied at VAQ-135, according to Navy officials. Approximately 65 officers, 400 enlisted men and women, and 110 civilian contractors make up and keep all parts of the squadron running smoothly -- this includes everything from maintaining airframes and engines, to processing paperwork, handling weaponry, and flying the aircraft. Serving in the Navy, Heintzman is learning about being a more responsible leader, sailor and citizen through handling numerous responsibilities. “I like the Navy,” added Heintzman. “I joined because I wanted to go to college, but I’ve enjoyed doing what I’m doing so much that I want to continue my service.”

All of creation testifies, this life within me cries, I know my Redeemer lives.” — “My Redeemer Lives” by Nicole C. Mullins I once attended a three-day retreat in Barrington, Michigan. The place we stayed is surrounded by the beauty of creation. Tall trees that appear to touch the sky, shrubs, flowers, trailing plants, and birds filled the early morning with their songs of praise to the creator. The glistening lake reflected the beauty of the heavens---clear blue, brushed with strokes of deep pink, green, and gold. How can anyone doubt that God exists? Every living thing bears the mark of an intelligent being that’s greater than us. The more we discover about ourselves, the earth and the universe, we are awed beyond words —there’s no way we came into existence by a big bang. Scripture (Romans 1:18-32) tells us that the truth of God’s existence, His character and divine nature is seen in the things He created. Let all creation testify, let this life within me cry, I know my Redeemer He lives to take away my shame, and He lives forever I’ll proclaim That the payment for my sins, was the precious life He gave, And now He’s alive and there’s an empty grave! I know my Redeemer lives, I know my Redeemer lives. Let all creation testify, let this life within me cry, I know my Redeemer lives.” For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. SSC Foundation Elects New President, Readies for Tom Dreesen Fundraiser and Scholarship Drive The South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) recently held its annual meeting at South Suburban College (SSC) in South Holland to review and close fiscal year (FY) 2017 and to elect new membership and officers for FY-18. Two new representatives will be joining the SSCF Board of Directors: Helen Y. Gant-Farley, of Advocate Medical Group, and John A. Velez of BMO Harris Bank. Ms. Gant-Farley, is the Regional Director of Operations for the Advocate Medical Group, a position she has held since June 2015 when she moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania. With over 10 years of financial experience, Mr. Velez is the Bank Manager for BMO Harris Bank at the South Holland office. He joined BMO Harris

Bank in 2010. Additionally, the Foundation elected a new slate of officers including new President Tim Woloszyn, MB Financial Bank; Vice-President Susan Cox, First Midwest Bank; Treasurer John Kasperek, Jr., John Kasperek Co., Inc.; and Executive Committee members Patrick Rush, SSCF Executive Director; Robin James, Providence Bank; Cindy Doorn-Nylen, Docter’s Interior Landscaping; and Don Manning, SSC President. “Thank you to the Board of Directors for your vote of confidence and your continued support of this important organization,” said Woloszyn. “I would also like to personally thank Cindy Doorn-Nylen for her incredible leadership during the past two years. I look forward to our continued growth to provide more opportunities to students at SSC.” The SSCF also reviewed fundraising successes and scholarships awarded of the past year. Its two major fundraisers–the fall Scholarship Donor Drive and the spring Showcase Gala helped the Foundation to award over $100,000 in scholarships, with an additional $12,000 in special assistance

directed to SSC students through the Carol Manning Student Assistance Fund and Rocky Clark Memorial Fund (for students with challenges). “Thanks to our board of directors and countless supporters, the South Suburban College Foundation had a successful year fulfilling its mission to support student success,” said Pat Rush, Executive Director. “The coming year will be especially critical to SSC and we will aggressively pursue additional support beginning with our Tom Dreesen performance on September 23rd, our ongoing $90-for-90 capital campaign, and our fall scholarship drive.” The SSC Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors composed of 22 of the south suburban area’s business, civic and community leaders. The SSCF has now awarded over $1,900,000 in scholarship awards since 1989. For more information about the SSCF or to donate to scholarship opportunities or capital projects, visit www.ssc. edu/foundation or email foundation@ssc.edu.

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD “Richard! Your goats are in the garden!” The voice of my mother. I raced outside to find them chomping vigorously in the strawberry patch. Again. What was their deal?! They had their own enclosure in the corner of the pasture, complete with lots of lush grass, fresh drinking water, a happy little goat house and all the hay and grains they could want. Apparently, it wasn’t good enough. Over time, they chewed their way through the fence and busted out. We fixed the hole. They chewed a new one. The solution? An electric fence. What happened next was truly a marvel. They could no longer break through the fence. Instead, they got down on the ground, stretched their long necks under the fence, and cropped a perimeter of grass around the outside of their yard. Meanwhile, the lush green grass inside their yard they left

untouched. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Even when it’s not. Let’s face it: we’re a lot like goats. No matter how good mine is, someone else’s is better—his car, her career, his resume, her relationships, his lawn, her life. This stirs up discontentment. The culture stokes it even more, saying, “You need it! You deserve it!” The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Hebrews 13:5b in the Bible says, “Be content with what you have, for [God] has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” Contentment begins with knowing Christ. It grows as you know his Father as your Father, as the one who will never forsake you, who will supply your needs and satisfy your heart, who loved you enough to send his Son to die for you. The grass is always greenest inside his fence.

The new Van Laten Park playground at 183rd & Holland Drive in Lansing has a reading theme.

The new Lan Oak Park playground at 180th and Arcadia Street in Lansing also includes an area for 5 and under.

_______________________________ Lansing residents have been busy this summer enjoying two new playgrounds within the Lansing parks system. The playground at Lan Oak Park, 180th and Arcadia Street, is the largest playground in Lansing and has, for decades, been considered the community playground. The new design for this playground started in April 2016 and has been much anticipated by residents as it promised new features not previously offered in any Lansing playgrounds. “The Board of Commissioners and park district staff were very conscious of the need to make the Lan Oak playground a unique and exciting location for the community.” said John Kelly, Park Board President. “We took our time, carefully evaluated play quality, and even looked for a WOW factor to entice and excite Lansing kids with new challenges. Given how busy this playground has been since opening, we are proud to say we achieved our goals.” The Lan Oak playground broke ground in March 2017 and opened on June 26, 2017. New elements in this playground, for children ages 5-12, include two 12Toro CCR 2450 snow blower $200. 708-339-3266 Cra f t s m a n s o c k e t s DW metric 25 standard metric 10 18x41 tv stand, smoked glass 42x48 mirror. n708-474-2668 Dark cherry wood dining room table w/4 chairs w/ cushion seats, 4 people, good cond. $250. 708-2594479 Craftsman drill press $20. 708-333-9225 Coleman lantern, two mantle floodlight $10. 708333-9225 Shower door 24” wide x 5’3” lg, stainless steel frosted panel complete with frame $18; electric motor 1/2HP, $15. 708-333-9520 Seven Chicago Bears glasses $4. 708-333-9225

foot slides, a 7-Post Netplex climber, a five-rider We-saw, and a Mobius Climber emulating rock climbing. Children ages 2-5 have a separate play area, Just My Size Play Lot, furnishing playground equipment designed especially for the younger age group. “The play lot is being enjoyed by parents that previously worried about losing their children on such a large playground, as well as their small children being run over by older kids. Our new play lot is fenced and gated for the safety of our younger users, with parents enjoying a bench inside the play lot for relaxing,” said Sharon Desjardins, Senior Superintendent of Strategy & Operations for the park district. Not too far away, and just as exciting, is the new playground at Van Laten Park, 183rd & Holland Drive. The Van Laten playground, while smaller than the Lan Oak playground, offers its own unique elements. “We wanted this playground to incorporate a reading theme into outdoor play,” said Desjardins. “The huge flowers, butterfly climber, bookcase climber, and book panels offered some whimsy and helped achieve that goal.”

Along with the theme playground, the park district installed the village’s first StoryWalk. StoryWalk offers a series of displays, spaced around a walking path. Children walking the path stop at each display to read 1 or 2 pages of a book. By walking the entire pathway, kids read the entire book, and get fit at the same time. Completing the fun at Van Laten is the second community Free Little Library allowing patrons to “take a book, leave a book” when visiting. The Van Laten improvements started in March 2017 and were completed by Memorial Day 2017. By refinancing its debt in 2014, the Lan-Oak Park District was able to gather approximately $750,000 for capital projects. Since that time, the park district has built four new playgrounds, installed four pickle ball courts, renovated seven park shelters, and made improvements to its community center. Desjardins promises, “Stay tuned, we have more improvements coming!” For questions about the Lan-Oak Park District or about these exciting new playgrounds, please call the Lan-Oak Park District at 708-474-8552

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question. My home has been on the market for 7 months. No offers, few showings, yet my agent promised me he could get more money for my home than anyone else. Any suggestions? Answer: Well, if you have read my past columns, you might have caught on that the right price sells homes faster than the best agent in town. Although a good agent & company will market your home to more qualified buyers, which highly increases your chance for a sale. Here’s the catch. When you sit down with an agent you are most likely going to get a really pretty folder with a list of their awards, pretty pictures of really happy people and a price of what your home should sell for. And that price is most likely inflated for at least one out of the three agents. Personally, I wouldn’t want to give up $25,000 just because those other two agents don’t understand how special my house is. Without offending you, I am here to tell you this doesn’t translate. Offering an unrealistically higher value is a crude tool used to excite a seller into thinking “hey, this person is going to know how to squeeze out some extra cash”. However, your agent doesn’t set the selling price, they only help determine an asking price. A ready, willing, and able buyer has the most control over the maximum value; and these buyers Medical ten’s unit Maxima 111 Staddyn with patches;1940s and 1950s Penn railroad calendars; 1 9 1 8 S e s s i o n s Mo z a r t mantle clock. 708-418-0343

aren’t going to be throwing in an extra $25k because your agent promised you a higher value in an attempt to gain more listings. Because I am a whole financial picture sort of guy, let’s look at the costs to a seller who allows the price to be set too high: Your house stays on the market without much activity. Your expenses continue to add up: taxes, utilities, insurance, mortgage payments, etc. You are maintaining a structure that nature is relentlessly attempting to tear down. And finally, new buyers start to think that there may be something wrong with the house as it’s been on the market for months. Be as wise as your age. Pick a realtor who lives or works locally. Review their website. Make sure they work for a well known company, where agent training is of upmost importance. The experienced agents know how to sell homes and have a proven track record. In real estate, experience is everything. Cathy & Jim Higgins are local, experienced Realtors with Coldwell Banker, the top company in the area. Call us for a market evaluation of your home. Lake Monroe near Bloomington, Indiana is a reservoir spanning Monroe and Brown Counties. At 10,750 acres, Lake Monroe is the largest lake entirely within Indiana. ________________________________________________

August is Water Quality Month. What’s on tap? A reminder to celebrate Indiana’s bounty of rivers, lakes and streams. They support a billion-dollar recreational economy and are central to our health, industry and agriculture. The picture isn’t all clean and refreshing, though. Raw sewage pollutes 7,000 miles of Indiana’s streams and rivers. 80% of Indiana water utilities say water pollution affects their ability to deliver the quality and quantity of water they need. While Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota have significantly invested in understanding, protecting and governing their surface and ground waters, while Indiana has lagged way behind. A national survey published in June found that 87% of American consumers believe “Clean water is the most essential natural resource—more than clean air” and 61% believe “Water issues are a major problem or a crisis in the U.S.” It’s clear—those who depend on Indiana’s ground and surface water—that’s all of us—

should take steps to better understand its importance to our public health, ecology and quality of life. A study funded by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust underscored the centrality of water to Indiana’s economy, public health and quality of life. Building on a 2014 report by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the study calls for active stewardship of our water resources, starting with better monitoring of freshwater systems and cleanup of polluted waterways. How to observe Water Quality Month? Paddle down a favorite stream. Pick up after pets. Gather friends to clean up a littered waterway. Let your state representative or state senator know that water quality is important to you. This August, and year-round, let’s vow not to take Indiana’s bountiful fresh waters for granted. Let’s enjoy them, appreciate their importance to our lives, and work to keep them clean and accessible. For more information, visit the #WQM17 Facebook page.

Dead ash trees show as gray among the lush green of the forest. Almost 150 million ash trees in Indiana are in danger. Photo: Troy McCormick ________________________________________________

The new campaign lends itself to winks and jest (“Your ash is in trouble;” “Prepare to kiss your ash goodbye.”) But advocates are quite serious about fighting the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect that has killed tens of millions of ash trees since it first came to the U.S. in 2002. As of March 2017, the emerald ash borer has been documented in all 92 counties in Indiana. Without aggressive action, experts say, 95% of all Indiana ash trees will be lost within 10 years. The Save our Ash Trees campaign calls on Hoosiers to help treat species that once composed 15-20% of our Indiana forests. “$200 can treat an ash tree for up to three years,” said Indiana Parks Alliance president Tom Hohman. “Any contribution helps, and

Ash trees are native Indiana trees that play a critical role in our woodlands.” The campaign is a joint effort of the Indiana Parks Alliance (IPA) and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ divisions of State Parks and Nature Preserves, with a goal to raise $20,000 to treat 100 mature, seed-producing ash trees in Indiana state parks and nature preserves. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin

(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. V.B.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Stop Stuffing MIKE BUDER a whirlpool tub (check), a 2-car garage (check), and you want it all close to shopping, transportation and schools (check). Notice what is missing from your wish list? It was room for all of those things that you have been hiding for years. I realize it’s a bit like Christmas to unpack all of those things that you have stored away for years but…you’ve actually lived without them so it is quite likely that you don’t really need them after all. I know this sounds harsh but I’m a tell you like it is kind of Realtor. In a real estate market where home prices have come down by 30 to 50 percent and with interest rates still at historically low levels you can’t let your stuff hold you back. Clean it out and be ready to write an offer on a home that has all the check marks in the right place. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. B u d e r H o m e s . com. The kind of stuff that if you took a good hard look at you might realize isn’t all that important and could be keeping you from buying a great home. Sometimes when we work with buyers we hear comments like “we need a dining room that will accommodate our three curio cabinets” or “the kitchen needs to have enough cabinets for 5 sets of dishes,” even though they have been out of sight in storage for 3 years. Instead of focusing on the great value of a home, the location, or the amenities you are focusing on where to put your stuff. Let’s take a step back and take a look at what you said you wanted in a home. You wanted an updated kitchen (check), a master bath with
