Father’s Day Jazz Concert The weather won’t be the only thing heating up this summer. The South Suburban Jazz All-Stars, led by percussionist, Art “Turk” Burton, will host a “hot as fire” jazz concert in honor of all Dads on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at the Hawkins Multi-Purpose Center, 151st and 4th Avenue, Phoenix, IL 60426 (located 4 blocks east of Halsted at 151st Street). Led by Burton and part of his “Sunday Jazz Live” initiative, the South Suburban Jazz All-Stars will feature acclaimed musicians Ernest Dawkins on saxophone, Eddie Beard on piano, Dushun Mosley on drums, and special guests. “We are happy to present to our public another exciting Father’s Day Concert as the event last year was outstanding in terms of musicianship and audience attendance,” Burton stated. “This year’s concert is one concert you will not want to miss,” Burton concluded. Tickets are available at the door and your donation of $15 per person will help support this year’s “Phoenix Family Festival.” Refreshments are included and there will be a “Father’s Day Raffle” for a chance to win a special gift for a special Dad. More information is available by emailing Art “Turk” Burton at atb60426@aol.com.

Pets for Life Wins National Award

Humane Society Calumet Area’s Pets for Life team Rocio Bolivar and Raven Shutsman accepted the Community Cup award from Humane Society of the United States on May 11 at the Animal Care Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Community Cup is awarded annually to a regional PFL team who have done exceptional work that year. __________________________________________ (PFL) team was awarded the Community Cup at Humane Society of the United States’ national Animal Care Expo on May 11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Community Cup is awarded annually to a regional PFL team who have done exceptional work that year. HSCA’s PFL team is one of 20 currently operating in the U.S. HSUS’ PFL Mentorship and Training Manager Jason Schipkowski said HSCA’s team received the award for showing the “true grit” of the program and referred to team members Rocio Bolivar and Raven Stutsman as the “dream team.” Rocio Bolivar started her career in animal welfare a few years ago as an intern with Mercy for Animals. She then toured the country with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals before joining Humane Society of the United States’ Pets for Life team based in Chicago. When the Chicago team disbanded, she joined HSCA’s PFL team in Fall 2016. Raven Shutsman has always had a heart for helping others and began her social service work as a volunteer advocate for battered women and children. She began volunteering at Central Oklahoma Humane Society’s Humane Place Animal Clinic, eventually joining their Pets for Life team when it formed two years ago. When the Oklahoma City PFL program dissolved, the move to NWI and HSCA’s team seemed a natural fit. The Pets for Life program was started by HSUS in 2011 with teams in Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. The program seeks to reduce local stray populations in underserved communities through targeted spay/neuter and vaccines services.
