South Holland’s Randy Moes named Van Lunen Fellow

Randy Moes, principal of Calvin Christian School in South Holland, Illinois, has been selected by the Van Lunen Center for Executive Management in Christian Schools at Calvin College for a 2017-2018 fellowship. The Van Lunen Center’s 2017-2018 cohort of fellows include educators from 20 schools across the United States and Canada. For JPGS and school affiliations of fellows, see www. vanlunencenter.org. The Fellows program, now in its 11th year, is designed for school heads who seek professional development in their work as administrators of faith-based schools. The majority of participant expenses are covered by the Van Lunen Center, including cost of instruction, lodging, meals, coaching and access to topic experts. The Van Lunen Center was established at Calvin in January 2007 with a $2.5 million endowment gift to the college from the Richard D. Van Lunen Foundation. Subsequent gifts from several foundations, individual gifts and Christian school associations support the center. Its purpose is to provide executive management education for senior leaders of schools based on the historic Christian faith. “The sessions are presented in a dynamic and rigorous format that includes case studies, interactive workshops, and expert training led by the faculty and consultants,” according to Jim Marsh, director of the Van Lunen Center. “In areas such as marketing, student recruitment and retention, social media, strategic planning, fund raising campaigns, sustainability, and other topics relevant to executive management skills,” he said, “participants will deepen their own leadership, develop skills, and create deep relationships with peers and leaders. They will become more prepared to craft and implement a sustainable Christian educational mission with parents, teachers and other supporting communities.” The program begins with five residential days in July 2017, continues again in January 2018 for five days, and ends with three days in July 2018. Between sessions, faculty coaching and consultant support is available via phone, through online tools and in person to assist fellows with a crucial school project. The Van Lunen Center was established to serve faith-based schools large and small across the U.S. and Canada with a bigtent philosophy, reaching out to schools from a wide range of faith traditions, including Baptist, Catholic, evangelical Protestant, Episcopal, independent Christian, Lutheran, Mennonite and Reformed Christian day schools.

MakerGirl is a non-profit startup founded by students at the University of Illinois in Champaign. They inspire elementary girls to be active in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) through 3D printing sessions. South Suburban College Class Holds 89th Commencement Ceremony

South Suburban College hosted its 89th Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 21, 2017 in the SSC Fitness Center/Fieldhouse on the Main Campus located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. This year’s Commencement Speaker was SSC alumnus Jarrett M. Adams, Attorney, Innocence Project, NY. After serving nearly 10 years for a wrongful conviction, Jarrett was exonerated with the assistance of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. As a first step, Jarrett literally walked back into college from his mother’s house in South Holland and

earned his Associates Degree from SSC in 2009. From scholarship to passing the New York bar exam on his first attempt in 2016, Jarrett has used the injustice he endured as inspiration to become an advocate for the underserved and uncounted. This year South Suburban College awarded over 550 degrees and certificates to graduating students, in addition to many more transferring students who are finishing up their two years at SSC. Approximately 225 students walked at the ceremony. Among this year’s graduates was LaWanda Flennoy,

Three women cross paths at a park entrance. Each must pass through the park in pursuit of her business. Each must navigate her way through debris, left after a long week-end. The first woman, with utter disregard, flings half-finished fast food and its packaging to the ground, adding to the mess. The second woman rolls her eyes in self-righteous disgust. She would never do such a thing. She picks her way through the park, careful neither to leave a mess nor become a mess herself. She prides herself on leaving no trace of her presence. The third woman surveys her surroundings. She has neither time nor resources to clean the entire park. She does, however, have fifteen minutes to spare. Spotting a large plastic bag on the ground, she grabs it and begins to fill it with trash as she makes her way across the park. Her crossing completed, her hands dirty, she deposits the bulging bag into a dumpster. She pauses to look back, satisfied that she is leaving the park in better condition than she found it. She has made a difference. Who are you in your relationships and community as you make your way through life, going about your business? Are you adding to the mess? Do you pride yourself in not making a mess, in not becoming a mess, even as you’re not making a difference? The Indiana State Department of Agriculture is now accepting submissions for the 10th annual Indiana Agriculture photo contest, which was created to showcase the hard work and contributions made by Hoosier farmers. The contest is open to the general public, and winning photographs will be featured during a ceremony at the 2017 Indiana State Fair. CAISON HUD Secretary Ben Carson created an uproar on social media when he said, “Poverty is a state of mind.” With the right mind-set, he says, an individual can lift himself out of poverty. Dr. Carson seems to believe that because he did it, everyone can do it. But what Ben Carson failed to disclose is that somewhere in his climb to success, someone gave him a hand up. More than likely 2, 3 or more people along with social safety nets gave him a hand up. Dr. Carson is not the only person who blames the poor for being poor. In April, Mayor Ivy Taylor of San Antonio, Texas said, poor people are broken people who have failed to connect with their creator which is the cause of their poverty. In other words, unless you are in relationship with God you will always be poor. Poverty is not a figment of the imagination, it is real. If it were possible to think one’s way out of poverty no one would be poor. Poverty is the last thing anyone would want to be next to death. And living above poverty is not a sign that one is in relationship with God. The fallacy of Carson and Taylor’s statements are seen in scripture. Listen to what he wrote from his jail cell in Philippi. “In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of facing life, whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens and empowers me” (Phil. 4:12, 13 AMP). The mindset of Paul was that regardless of his circumstance, his faith in God enabled him to endure hard times, and enjoy good times. God has given each of us something to give for the betterment of someone else. Many times, poverty is not due to a lack of faith in the individual who is poor, it’s a lack of faith in the one who have the means to be a hand up but refuses to do so. Community Job Fair Receives High Marks From Participants

Job fair participants receive information about the college’s Construction Trades Program.

Job seekers had the opportunity to speak with a wide array of employers at the 2017 Community Job Fair co-sponsored by South Suburban College and Thornton Township.

_______________________________ The 2017 Community Job Fair cosponsored by South Suburban College and Thornton Township attracted residents from all walks of life from throughout the south suburbs, Chicago and northwest Indiana. This year’s attendees were not only seeking employment but also looking to advance their careers. The event also attracted many new larger employers representing healthcare, education, finance and industry. Diamond Wright, event coordinator from the college’s Career Development Office said they decided to take a different route with this year’s job fair. “We invited larger companies that we had never had before in order to expand job opportunities for all segments of the community. We had an excellent response and had 85 employers represented,” she said. In addition, they conducted more community outreach. More than 5,000 flyers were distributed not only in the south suburban area, but also in Chicago and northwest Indiana. Both the prospective job seekers and employers were impressed with this year’s event. This was the first year of participation for Rush University Medical Center. Recruiter Kiesha Miller said they were seeking to fill a variety of medical and

support staff positions and were in particular need of pharmacy technicians. “We had a good response. It was a good event and I would definitely return next year,” she said. Representatives from Franciscan Health agreed. “This was one of the biggest events we have ever participated in. We had a lot of good candidates,” said Jessica Castro, general recruiter. She also expressed interest in developing a working relationship with SSC since the college has a nursing program. First time participants from the local area said they were impressed with those they spoke to for the positions they had available. Marianne Lambur, director of human resources for Blue Cap, an agency serving children and adults with developmental disabilities said the event was well worth her time. “I am excited to get back to the office to review the applications from the people I talked with and follow up with them,” she said. Dutch Farms in South Holland was seeking applicants for warehouse distribution jobs as well as Class A & B truck drivers. Representative Rachelle Pullman said the event was well organized and attracted many good applicants. Job seekers came away optimistic about future opportunities.

Chicago resident Lorene Lyles said she was very impressed with the quality of the employers represented. “I am interested in advancing my career in sales and marketing and I received much positive feedback from the employers I spoke with,” she said. Cynthia Bridges from South Holland decided to take a proactive approach and attend the job fair because there have been layoffs at her place of employment. “I work in the business and accounting field and am seeking new opportunities. There are a lot more employers than I expected to see so it was well worth my time to attend,” she said. “I’m grateful to the township and the college for offering this event” “We wanted to give the southland community the kind of job fair where they would find a new career or improve their quality of life with a new job,” said Frank Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. “We are incredibly proud about our successful job fair where companies in healthcare, non-profits, manufacturing, education and other industries came seeking qualified employees. Economic development will always be one of the most important focuses of Thornton Township because we know that it elevates life for so many people.”

The Calumet Memorial Park District’s Youth Camp for ages 8 to 12 begins its first session on Monday, June 12. Participants will be kept busy each day having fun by playing sports, games, making crafts, swimming, and taking field trips. Session I is until June 30. Cut Your Commission! MIKE BUDER Commission in my office is a rate negotiated between the brokerage firm and the seller. It is clearly stated in our listing agreements as well as the rate we offer to co-oping brokerage firms that might have a buyer for the property. Last week we had a buyer and seller countering back and forth on a deal. When they both seemed to reach the point of “this is my final offer” we were still thousands of dollars apart. The buyer asked the real estate agents to forgo half of the commission in an effort to “put together a deal”. I wonder if that buyer goes into Walmart and asks the clerk to forgo a few hours of their salary so he can buy a video game at half price? Does he go into his child’s school and ask the teacher to throw in a little of her paycheck so he can buy his child new school supplies? I wonder if buyers know how little of that “BIG COMMISSION” goes into the “profit” column. First of all, commissions are based on the home’s sale price, which in most of our areas has declined on average between 30% and 40% over the past 10 years. Second the total commission is divided between the listing and selling brokerage firms and that portion is typically divided between

The faculty and staff at Thornwood High School continue to produce outstanding students, as well as highly motivated young people. The recently elected School Board has set 5 goals that will place Thornton High School District 205 on a path of continual improvement. The first of these goals is that staff and faculty will ensure learning, growth and achievement for each student that attends Thornwood, Thornridge and Thornton High Schools. Staff and faculty have eagerly signed on to the first goal in tangible ways. To assist students in their higher education, several District 205 administration members have established scholarships for district graduates to continue their education at the nation’s top universities. Ellie Beard, Secretary/Treasurer of The Academic Enrichment Foundation, recently called local media together to announce the recipients of two administration scholarships. Comfort Abuwa, a Thornwood High School graduate, is the recipient of the Jerry B. Doss Scholarship. Dr. Doss is the Assistant Superintendent of District L-R Ellie Beard - Academic Enrichment Foundation, Comfort Abuwa –Thornwood Graduate, 205. Comfort will attend Harvard Dr. Jerry B. Doss – Assistant Superintendent School District 205 University with a major in Biological Sciences. The Dr. Jerry B. Doss Leadership Scholarship is given to a student who is an active participant in service activities in school and the community, as well as exemplifies leadership in and out of school activities. Simbiat Eji-Lasisi is a graduate of Thornwood High School and the recipient of the William J. Garrett Scholarship. Garrett is Manager of Operations in School District 205. Sembiat will attend the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and major in Bio-Chemistry. The William J. Garrett Scholarship is presented to a student who exemplifies excellence in writing that includes clarity, organization and inspiring topics. These scholarships are given through the District 205 Academic Enrichment Foundation. MUNSTER COMMUNIT Y V ETER AN’S MEMORIAL RECALLS WWI: In a highly scripted and professionally presented Memor ia l Day obser vat ion, Mu nster Post 2697 and American Legion Post 16 celebrated the holiday at the Community Memorial 9710 Calumet Avenue to an attentive crowd basking in the noontime sunshine. Star of the show this year was Jim Gimbl, wearing his father’s W W I uniform which, like the anniversary of the war, is 100 years old. Amazingly, the uniform shows little wear and tear. Jim himself was a sergeant in the US Air Force in 1953, and recalls his father’s pride in caring for the uniform over the years. The theme of the Memorial Day observation was the anniversary of the “war to end all wars,” WWI. In his brief talk, Jim spoke of the outcome of wars and of our hopes that there will never be another, which never seems to happen. The 6. 5 acre memorial depicts the major military conflicts that shaped the 20th centur y-W W I, W W II, Korea, Vietnam and desert Storm. It is a place of education and challenge. GARDEN GOODIES TO BE A LITTLE L ATE THIS Y EAR : Fourth generation farmer Bob VanDerGriends, pictured here at his ‘red barn’ garden center, 2812 Glenwood Lansing Road, Chicago Heights, Il, was lamenting the fact that we have had more rain t his past spring than he has seen in his 63 years. “We never had this much rain which kept the planting back a nd t hrew us weeks behind in harvesting,” he noted recently. We will not be able to visit his farm stand and get our garden goodies until mid July. N 2 N visited with Bob last week and he told us a bit of the family history. During the depression his grandfather Pete dug wells for residents moving into South Holland, but money was tight and few paid him. So, he switched to farming and now Bob is the 4th generation farmer, along with Bob Jr. and Scott and Jean. For those of us who are regulars at VanDerGriends Farm Stand, we w ill want to keep in touch to see when we can drop by. Until then the stand will be open from to time. The farm stand phone is 708-474-1255. Locals also remember that last year’s Calumet City Farmer’s Market featured the fabulous fruits and vegetables of the VanDerGriends. Hopefully we will have just enough rain to water the plants from now on. ***

We will look at maps and photos and talk about the interesting history and impact on our daily lives of these two Boundary Lines which are still visible on our landscape. Misunderstanding crucial facts about the disease can have devastating consequences that keep people from seeking an Alzheimer’s diagnosis and reduce access to needed resources, clinical trials and support services.
