Thornwood High School Drama Team Places in State Competition

Thornwood’s newly re-booted Speech and Drama team took part in the IHSA Speech Individual Events State Finals held February 17-18 at the Peoria Civic Center (Peoria, Illinois), where more than 200 schools from across the state competed in speech and drama competitions, To help jump-start the restructured program at Thornwood, more than ten students participated in the state-wide competition. “This is the first time in four years we’ve gone to State Finals,” according to Javon Smith, Head Coach for Thornwood Speech and Drama Team—and it is the first year of the reestablished speech team. Roulette Heitmann and Antwan “AJ” Potts of Thornwood co-authored the original play, Four Women. Four Women won 4th place in the Performance in the Round category at the IHSA Speech competition. Performance in the round places the actors in a space completely surrounded by the audience. Four Women was inspred by a song written by Nina Simone, a famous African-American songwriter and performer. Smith explained that the play tells the real-life, modern-day story of Marrisa Alexander, Tarona Burke, Cyntoia Brown and Rekia Boyd, women killed by police or believed to

be wrongfully incarcerated. Thornwood students including Kendall O’Neal, Becontee Barjebo, Jihan Davis and Khasira Martin performed in the show. To add to the list of achievements at the State Finals competition, sophomore Jada Johnson placed 5th in the Prose category, which ramped up the excitement even more for Thornwood. Said Maria Brown, Division Leader for English, Reading, Speech, and Library, “Johnson is a shining example of the work and commitment to both craft and student that Mr. Smith constantly illustrates.” The newly revised program offered an enormous head start at the opening of the 2017-18 school year. In September, the program started off with “Dreamgirls,” a 1981 Broadway musical mainly composed of AfricanAmerican actors, which tells the real life story of the high price of fame as it relates to Diana Ross and the Supremes. The Dreamgirls production was hosted at Thornton High School’s auditorium back in September. “Javon Smith’s tenacity and determination to provide his students with the tools and structure they need is what earned Thornwood a slot to compete in the Speech and Drama State Finals. Javon has outstanding talent and

Thornwood is proud to have him on our team,” said Brown. A graduate of De Paul University, Smith received a degree in Secondary Education and English, along with three minors. Sharing his method of teaching, Smith said, “My approach and philosophy is to educate students who have a need for a safe space to learn and grow. Thornwood is that safe space for scholars; a place for them to learn both socially and emotionally.” Professional actresses who attended Thornwood include Jasundra Johnson, Loren Wells, and Johari Mackey. Mackey performed in Ms. Wells’ 2018 production, Mother of the Dark Water at the Greenhouse Theater in Chicago. According to Smith, Wells owns the oldest African-American theater in Chicago. Darius Leak. also a former Thornwood student who performed in the MPACT Show, acted in By Association, also hosted at the Greenhouse Theater in 2017. Thornwood’s speech and drama team is comprised of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. On May 15 at Thornwood, the team will present their spring showcase to highlight their remarkable speeches and performances. The event starts at 7:30 p.m., and public is invited. “This is just the beginning,” Smith said.

SAT University is a program that uses strategies designed to increase students’ practice scores. The official SAT exam will be administered April 10. ______________________________________

By Patricia Muhammad “When Sylvan Learning Center said, ‘We have to salute Ms. Je’Len Evans because she received the perfect score on her practice exam,’ we were like, ‘oh my God,’” said SAT University staff member, Veronica MosleyRaggs, AVID Coordinator for Thornwood High School. “Her SAT scores were very average in the beginning—but then, she increased her scores by 200 points from when we started the sessions in January up until now.” SAT staff members’ first impression of Je’Len’s practice scores were reflective of just her math exam, but after taking a closer look, test results showed that the 200-point increase was for all three subjects—math, English, and reading. Evans is currently a junior at Thornwood. “The phenomenal growth with her is because she comes to every single practice session and she comes on Saturday,” said Mosley-Raggs. Managed by a dedicated staff of teachers at Thornwood, SAT University has created proven strategies and test-taking methods to help students increase their scores. With the assistance of the Sylvan Learning Center, the combined team turns students’ average SAT practice exam scores into significantly remarkable scores. “What we have done is put into place a number of strategies so our students are successful when taking the actual SAT exam on April 10. It is important for them to be familiar with timing issues, test questions, language, and academic vocabulary,” MosleyRaggs said. Crystal Taylor, a Science teacher at Thornwood and staff member for SAT University, also sees the program as a chance for students to master the April 10 SAT exam. She said, “Every student who participated in the SAT University Summer Camp (2017)

increased their scores by 100 points.” Thornwood’s SAT University was implemented during its first summer camp held in 2017. The camp brought together a team of 10 teachers dedicated to helping students bring up their SAT practice scores. “We all have the same passion,” said Mosley-Raggs, “the passion to make our students succeed. We will do whatever it takes to make it happens. When That means whatever strategies that can help them. Whatever resources, whatever tools that are needed. We’re going to go to our district, our administration, and say, ‘Please, can we use this to help our students.’” Mosley-Raggs explained that Illinois has traditionally been an ACT state, however, the new state Superintendent of Schools, Tony Smith has transitioned away from the ACT, making it a requirement for students to take the SAT exams. She said, “This has been a huge transition for the entire state and this does not just affect individual schools.” Students attend SAT prep classes, which focus on Math and English, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Saturdays, the school partners with Sylvan Learning Center to host the classes from 9 am to noon. Students also have access to SAT prep books that aid them in taking the standardized test. “We are Godly proud of our students and the dedication they show to come to every session. I think we’ve shown them that there is success in this,” Mosley-Raggs said. “[Excellence brings] scholarship opportunities, so when they go to college, they will not be in debt. We know that the majority of Millennials have student debt that it is unbelievable, so affording them an opportunity for a free education is the number one thing; really, it’s the reason for preparing them for standardized testing.”

Every year at the Calumet Region Sportsmanship Dinner, which precedes the IHSAA boys basketball sectionals, one player of the approximately 400 in attendance from 30 region high schools is recognized with the special Leadership Award that comes with a cash scholarship for college. This year’s honoree was none other than Bishop Noll’s salutatorian, Lilly Scholar and Warrior co-captain, Michael Quintero. Michael, of Hammond, is a captain of the BNI basketball and cross country teams and has been a student retreat leader. He also serves as a Eucharistic minister at St. John the Baptist in Robertsdale and volunteers in the parish’s Phyre Ministry. Michael attended St. Catherine of Siena and St. John Bosco schools before enrolling at Bishop Noll. He plans to attend Purdue University in West Lafayette and study mechanical engineering.

IDOR Uses Quiz to Defend Against State Tax Filing Fraud Indiana Department of Revenue’s (DOR) Identity Protection and Fraud Prevention Program has developed a quiz to ensure Hoosier tax refunds are being properly sent to the taxpayers, and not fraudsters. Once a tax-payer files their Indiana state income taxes, IDOR sends the sender’s information through an identity verification database—this prevents a fraudster from filing as you, then having your refund sent to them. The majority of Indiana tax filings are confirmed through this process. As an additional level of protection, selected taxpayers will be requested to confirm their identities through an online Identity Confirmation Quiz. Being selected for the quiz does not necessarily mean a taxpayer has been targeted for fraud. Governors State University Board Approves Tuition Freeze Students enrolling at Governors State University can count on tuition staying the same next year following a unanimous vote by its trustees for no tuition increase. The board’s decision at its March 2 meeting to hold tuition flat keeps a college degree from Governors State among the most affordable of any four-year state university in Illinois. Undergraduate tuition rates for Illinois residents during the 2018-19 academic year will remain $313 per credit hour. Affordability and access to financial aid for GSU students is essential. Nearly 60 percent of GSU’s freshman class received

Since the seller was not obligated to offer a lower price, which would allow us to void the deal based on mortgage contingency, are we obligated to sign a new contract for the lower sale price? Answer: How do you benefit as a buyer from an upwardly-revised appraisal? Does not a higher appraisal lead to a steeper price and a larger monthly mortgage payment? How do you know the lender wanted a higher price? Do you have evidence? If what you say is true, then how did the

South Suburban College kicked off Women’s History Month with a free one-woman stage act about Harriet Tubman on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in the Kindig Performing Arts Center at 11:00 a.m. Veteran actress, vocalist, director, and playwright Cynthia Maddox wowed the crowd that included students from elementary, high school, and college as well as community members. History and heritage have long been dominant and recurring themes in her performances. Maddox’s one-woman stage act highlighted the trials and tribulations of Harriet Tubman, a true American “she-ro.” Tubman was an abolitionist, humanitarian, and during the American Civil War, a Union spy. She is best known as a “conductor” for the Underground Railroad. This “railroad” had numerous stops in Illinois. The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to share the top tax filing season scams for 2018, referred to as the “IRS Dirty Dozen.” First in the 12-part series is “phishing” schemes, designed to gather personal information or money from the taxpayer. These new or evolving phishing schemes work specifically to target taxpayers during filing season. One new phishing scam victimizing thousands of taxpayers includes depositing money into the taxpayer’s bank account. The scam artist gains access to client data from tax professionals, and then files a fraudulent tax return, using the taxpayer’s own bank account to deposit funds. Once the funds are deposited, the thief then uses various tactics to reclaim the refund from the taxpayer, including falsely claiming to be from a collection agency or the IRS. Phone calls, emails and websites are used to make the scheme seem legitimate. Email phishing schemes targeting tax, payroll or human resource professionals have also been on the rise in recent weeks. Criminals use email to pose as a person or organization the taxpayer trusts by either hacking an email account to send mass emails to personal contacts or posing as a bank, credit card company, tax software provider or government agency. These criminals will create websites appearing to be legitimate, but containing phony log-in pages, hoping taxpayers will provide personal information or make a payment. Another email tactic is to infect a taxpayer’s computer with malware giving the criminal access to the device. This allows the criminal to access files or track keyboard strokes to gather login information. What Should Investors Know About Recent Volatility? BOB KRYGSHELD It seems the stock market has been on a wild ride lately. What’s behind this volatility? How concerned should you be as an investor? Let’s look at the first question. What caused the steep drop in stock prices occurring on separate days? Two main factors appear responsible. First, some good economic news may have played a significant role. A 17-year low in unemployment and solid job growth have been pushing wages upward. This led to fears of rising inflation, which led to speculation that the Federal Reserve will tighten the money supply at a faster-than-expected rate. Stocks reacted negatively to the threat of higher interest rates. The second cause of the market volatility appears to be simply a reaction to the long bull market. While rising stock prices lead investors to buy more and more shares, some people actually need to sell their stocks —this, along with short-term profit-taking, contributed to the large sell-offs of recent days. As for how concerned you should be about this volatility, consider these points: • Sell-offs are nothing unusual. And big sell-offs are generally followed by strong recoveries. Of course, past performance is not a guarantee of future results, but history has shown that patient, persistent investors are often rewarded. • Fundamentals are strong. While shortterm market movements can be caused by a variety of factors, in the long term economic conditions and corporate earnings typically drive

And corporate earnings are expected to rise this year. Given all this, what’s your next move? Here are some suggestions: • Review your situation. Evaluate your portfolio with a financial professional to determine if it is helping you progress toward your long-term goals. • Reassess your risk tolerance. If you were troubled by the loss in value of your investments during the market pullback, you can review your risk tolerance to see if your investment mix is appropriate. You may need to rebalance your portfolio. But remember that “playing it safe” by investing heavily in vehicles that protect principal, but offer little in return, you risk not attaining the growth you need to reach your objectives. • Look for opportunities. A market pullback like we’ve experienced, occuring in a period of economic expansion and rising corporate profits, can allow long-term investors to add new shares at attractive prices in an environment that may precede a market rally. A sharp market pullback will always be big news. But if you look beyond the headlines, you can sometimes see a different picture—and one that may be brighter than you had realized. Mr. Stanley Sowa is an elementary school physical education teacher with South Holland School District 151. He currently teaches at Eisenhower School where he is primarily responsible for PE and health instruction for students in second grade. He will discuss how he navigates the world of elementary education with women holding 82% of all elementary teaching positions in the U.S. Additionally, he will highlight why males should not shy away from female dominated professions. Lastly, our experienced staff will articulate how various professions have changed throughout the years, and how South Suburban College can help individuals get a head start, a certificate, or a degree toward these professions, many often paying $50,000 a year or more.

The Lord of this world’s vast wheat-fields called himself a kernel! One among millions. When the Son of God left his throne to become human, like us, that’s exactly what he did. He set aside his perks as ‘Lord of the wheat-fields’ to become a humble kernel, like you and me. But Jesus didn’t stop there. On January 31, 2018, I wrote a letter to a collection agency and the hospital that it represented and told them that if the false bill that they sent to our client was not recalled, I would help our client file complaints against both firms with appropriate state and/or federal offices. Our client is a blind senior citizen from Westville, Indiana. In 2017, he got a bill that he did not understand. His wife sent it to me. We got copies of the Medicare ruling on the claim and I compared it to the bill from the hospital and the collection agency. The footnotes of Medicare’s ruling stated that the hospital could not charge our client the $1,672.68 that the hospital and collection firm were demanding. Basically, I told the hospital and collection firm that I had caught them violating Medicare rules and trying to collect on a false bill. This sort of thing happens to seniors all over the country. Have you ever seen a salamander? They are not an everyday sight, at least not in most (dry) places around here where people live. Salamanders of nearly all species require damp or wet habitats, and blue-spotted salamanders are no different. Native to all of the Great Lakes states, blue-spotted salamanders are secretive but very interesting creatures. These grayish-blue amphibians with blue spots or flecks can be found in damp or swampy woodland areas, especially near small ponds, ditches or temporary pools. Blue-spotted salamanders are called “mole salamanders,” because they spend most of their lives underground in abandoned burrows made by moles, voles or other small animals. They are also found under decaying logs or piles of moist leaf litter. They eat worms, slugs, spiders and small insects. endangered in Illinois or Indiana, but due to habitat loss they are listed as a species of “Special Concern” in Indiana and a species in “Greatest Need of Conservation” in Illinois. In Illinois they can only be found in the northeastern corner of the state. These fascinating salamanders typically grow to 4-6 inches in length. Adults search for temporary vernal pools in spring to breed, and since these pools usually dry up in the summer the young salamanders don’t need to worry about predatory fish hunting and eating them. One interesting fact about blue-spotted salamanders is that their babies are significant predators of mosquito larvae in the shallow pools where they are born. Before these pools dry up in the summer, the tiny salamanders eat thousands of mosquito larvae. That should make them very popular with people!

St. Catherine Hospital Receives $20,000 Grant to Promote Breast Cancer Screenings for the Uninsured and Underinsured The Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust has awarded a one-year, $20,000 grant to St. Catherine Hospital for the breast screening and awareness program, called “Pretty in Pink.” This is the third year the Community Healthcare System hospital has received a $20,000 grant for the mammogram screening program and marks the fifth consecutive time it has been awarded funding from the Trust. “Mammogram screenings are critical for every woman, regardless of cost or their insurance situation,” said Leo Correa, chief executive officer of St. Catherine Hospital. “We are most grateful to the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness

Trust for providing funds that enable us to promote health and wellness for uninsured and underinsured individuals in our community. The services allow us to offer a continuum of breast screenings to women who may otherwise go without it.” Quality Care Navigator Lupe Arellano, RN, of the Women’s Diagnostic Center at St. Catherine Hospital, said the “Pretty in Pink” program allows those who have no health insurance, no mammography coverage or a policy with a high deductible to be a candidate for a free mammogram screening. “Many women delay breast mammograms or ultrasound services due to the high costs,” said Arellano. “Advanced

He sees the same for 2019 and 2020 though he says the economy has not come roaring back to anywhere near it’s status prior to 2008. He noted “a very gradual recovery” was not all that bad. Students returning home for summer break from other colleges and universities can take a general education course at GSU, transfer the credits to their home university, and have it apply toward their degree requirements. “’Taking classes at GSU during the summer is a cost effective way to get a jump on your degree requirements or investigate a subject of interest,” explains Paul McGuinness, Director of Admissions. “Our flexible schedule makes it possible to take a class in the summer, and our undergraduate tuition rate is the lowest of any university in northern Illinois.
