“The patient’s well being is the primary reason this needs to be addressed,” Parker says. “But if that’s not incentive enough for health-care providers, pressure ulcers also result in 17,000 lawsuits a year, so nursing homes and other health facilities are risk liability if they don’t handle the problem.”

“It’s critical that family members educate themselves about the issues that occur in nursing homes or other health facilities,” Parker says. “It so often falls to each individual to act as their loved one’s advocate.”

Towle Theater to offer Youth Education Workshops Towle Theater in Hammond is excited to offer two workshop sessions, 2018 Winter Skills Series, over the holiday break for students ages 10-18. The workshops will run Wednesday, January 3 and Friday, January 5 from 1pm-4pm.

Come on Wednesday, January 3 from 1-4 pm as they present a choreography workshop with Heathers choreographer Colin Funk. Colin brings his incredible talent and energy back to the Towle for this fun 3 hour workshop during which he will break up an audition cut and give pointers on how to learn dance quickly at an audition by teaching stock moves, showing some shortcuts, and introducing some memorization exercises. In

contrast to his work on Heathers, Colin will be using a piece of music from one of the classics, maybe something from Oklahoma, Brigadoon or Carousel, including something with some simple ballet in it.

And on Friday, January 5, join resident Vocal and Music Director Elizabeth Tuazon as she presents “What Should I Sing for My Audition”? There are many answers, depending on how you approach the question. This workshop addresses some tools and skills you’ll need, including: knowing what you’re auditioning for, selecting your rep, creating a cut, setting up your book, requesting feedback, and preparing to present your

best in the audition room.

The cost for each session is $25. There are no refunds.

Highland Police Put Down Razors for No-Shave November, Raising Funds for the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster

No-Shave November, a national campaign, was launched in 2009 to raise awareness and funding for cancer prevention, education and research.

Highland police donated the money they would spend on shaving equipment to cancer causes. Wanting to keep the proceeds in their own community, the department contributed the final check in the amount of $2,000 to the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster.

The Cancer Resource Centre at 926 Ridge Road helps

patients and their families affected by cancer get the support, education, and encouragement they need to cope and heal emotionally and spiritually. All programming at the Centre is free and includes a wide variety of support groups, mind-body classes, and lectures, as well as a resource room equipped with books, videos and Internet access.

The Cancer Resource Centre is a program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation. The foundation works to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality in the region by supporting and advancing cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment, education and prevention efforts of the hospitals of Community Healthcare System.

Don Fesko, President of the Community Cancer Research Foundation Board of Directors, explained that support from residents and the business community is vital to the Cancer Resource Centre’s mission.

“It is because of unselfish donations from caring community members, such as the Highland Police Department that the Centre is able to continue on with its important work of offering patients knowledge, support, comfort and hope, until a cure—for all cancers—is found,” Fesko said. “We are very grateful for their generous contribution.”

Avoid Burst Pipes: Prepare Your Home for Cold Weather According to Deborah Dewey of utility Indiana American Water, cold weather with single-digit low temperatures is just beginning, so it’s important to secure homes and businesses against freezing pipes to avoid costly repairs.

“Although the winter season can pose many challenges to a homeowner, one of the biggest and most costly is the risk of frozen pipes,: says Dewey. “When ice expands inside pipes, it can crack and burst the pipe, leaving homeowners with a costly plumbing bill, plus thousands of dollars in damages from water leaking inside the house.” Luckily, these problems are preventable by evaluating areas of vulnerability throughout the home and taking certain precautions. Implementing the following winterization tips now can help avoid headaches later: • Search your house for uninsulated pipes, especially in unheated areas. Consider wrapping pipes with electric heating tape, but follow manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid

a fire hazard.

• Seal cracks and holes in foundations and outside walls with caulking, especially where cable TV or phone lines enter the house, to keep cold winds away from pipes.

• If your home is heated by a hot-water radiator, take a moment to bleed the valves: open them slightly, then close them when water appears.

• Make certain the water to your hose bibs is shut off inside your house (via a turnoff valve), and the lines are drained.

• Drain and shut off entirely the water to any unoccupied residence such as a summer or vacation home. A loss of power during a winter storm could cause pipes to freeze. If you intend to leave a property entirely without heat, be sure to drain all water to prevent the possibility of frozen pipes.

• If you’re going out of town, set your thermostat at 55 degrees. Although you may be able to get away with a lower temperature, this setting is considered to be safe for pipes.

New Law Reduces Limited Liability Company Filing Fees A new law reducing filing fees for Illinois Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) took effect December 20, 2017.

According to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, “This is a business-friendly law that significantly reduces the cost of forming and maintaining a Limited Liability Company in Illinois. My office has been given the task of administering these fee reductions with respect to transactions, whether done online, through the mail, or in person. We strive to provide the highest level of customer service for every filing method used.”

MIKE BUDER Meet the new agent… same as the old agent… of course this is a play on “meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” What I am addressing here is that many people think changing real estate agents will help a listing that is not selling. They think one agent is as good as another, so if one doesn’t “perform” then we just move onto the next. Commoditization of the work force seems to be the order of the day—so it is somewhat natural that buyers and sellers would treat real estate agents the same way.

Sometimes change can be a good thing. If your agent isn’t doing a good job marketing your home, bringing in a new agent may be the answer.

But in other cases, and perhaps more often than not, it will make little to no difference in the final outcome. One dirty little secret of real estate is that an agent has a very limited ability to influence the final sale price. Agents can help you get the most that the market will allow… but beyond that they are at the mercy of market forces. The notion that a real estate agent can beat the bushes and pull out the ONE buyer willing to pay a premium for your home because of its special features is stuff of urban legend.

10%, can a Ford dealer realistically be expected to move them for their original price? The answer is plainly no. And although no two houses are exactly identical, the ability of the agent to defy market forces is simply not there.

You actually have to sell your house 3 times: once the buyer says “yes” the home still has to pass muster with the inspector, as well as the bank appraiser. So even if you find a buyer willing to pay $120,000 on a $100,000 value, there are several more “decision makers” in the mix that can kill the deal…and these decision makers are not buying with their hearts—for them it’s all about the bottom line.

So unless you find a cash buyer, the home will have to pass muster with the bank. The banks will not fund a loan if the home is overpriced. Holding out for that higher price will get you less in the end. Relisting with another agent under these conditions will accomplish nothing.

Now, students have the opportunity to compete for prizes as they engage in a national challenge to communicate messages to their peers about the dangers these drugs pose.

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the DEA Educational Foundation and Discovery Education, a leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, have come together to offer the second annual Operation Prevention Video Challenge.

The challenge is an extension of Operation Prevention, a nationwide program that educates students about the science behind addiction and its impact on the brain and body. The program’s interactive, standards-aligned resources are available at no cost to help promote lifesaving discussions in the

Persians rode into the capital city and introduced themselves as scholars of astrology. In their broken Latin they asked around about a baby, just born, who would become the new king. They had traveled for weeks to come and honor him.

Word got back to King Herod. Herod invited the Persians to his palace and showed great interest in finding out himself about the new king. Herod made them promise to stop back on their way home to report what they found.

The Persians knew their stars. But they were not wise men when it came to palace intrigue or the paranoia that brought Herod to slaughter his half-brothers and sons and any other potential contenders to the throne.

The Persians finally found the young family in a nearby village. They honored the royal baby with sumptuous gifts.

On the night before their trip home, an angel visited the Persians. Angels didn’t figure much into Persian spirituality, but they got the message and avoided King Herod on their way home.

Herod was outraged that he’d been given the slip. He dealt with his insecurity and anger as was his custom: with violence. He massacred all the baby boys under two years old, born in the village visited by the Persians.

WOODROW WILCOX On November 15, 2017, a client visited my office both to apologize and to help me make a point to readers. He apologized for being a bit “gruff” with me on his first visit a few weeks earlier.

At that time, he was upset that he got a bill for over $150 for a few soft rubber CPAC masks.

He had forgotten that he had bought a Medicare supplement policy that did not cover the $183 Medicare Part B annual deductible.

I told him that I was surprised that the CPAC masks cost so much because I used to work in a plastics and rubber molding factory.

He described the mask to me.

I told him I’d like to see one of the masks, after he used it and cleaned it. He delivered the mask in a plastic bag on this visit.

I was amazed at the price of the small item.

The medical supplies provider billed Medicare $189.42 per clear rubber mask. Medicare approved a reduced charge of $34.60 per mask. That charge might be justified depending on how much paperwork the medical supplier had to do to sell the medical supply

Here is my point. The Medicare system creates enormous additional costs to taxpayers, senior citizens, and those involved in providing medical care or supplies to seniors. My nearly fifteen years of helping seniors fight mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system has convinced me that the Medicare system was not designed to help seniors with medical care costs.

Instead, it was designed to make billions of dollars every year for federal government employees and federal government contractors.

It does that job very well. The special interests of the government employees and government contractors keep health care costs for everyone higher than necessary.

Jones also announced the completion of his law degree from Loyola University School of Law. “I am excited about the direction of the 29th district,” Jones said. “Local businesses, residents and community leaders have shown an amazing desire to share input on how we can work together to improve our schools, neighborhoods and work together for families in our area. In Springfield, Jones has worked to implement fiscally responsible practices in the budget making process, support policies that help local employers create and retain good paying jobs, ensure that our schools receive the funding they need to meet children’s academic and extracurricular needs, and promote legislation that will effectively combat gang violence and keep communities safe.

“What’s happening right now in our communities and across the state requires a unified response from legislators, community leaders and every day residents,” said Jones. “I have hosted several events to gather input from the community and I am committed to being a strong voice for the issues we decide as a community are important.”

The upcoming primary election will be held on Tuesday - March 20, 2018, with early voting beginning on February 8, 2018. Jones has represented the 29th representative district since 2011. He is the founder and former President of the Jones Foundation and former 3rd Ward Alderman in Calumet City. He received a B.A. from Loyola University Chicago and recently completed his J.D. Thornton Township Brings Holiday Cheer to Over 600 Families

Thornton Township employees volunteered their time to distribute gifts and food baskets.

The Thornton Township distributed gifts to more than 600 families on December 16. In addition 1,400 holiday food baskets were given out to the families, seniors in the community and MacArthur and ECHO schools and Illinois Action for children.

A total of 8,000 baskets were distributed by the township for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Donations to support the gift program come from local businesses, individuals, churches and local community groups and non-profit organizations. This was the second year Gift of Hope donated to the program. The group increased their donation by 50 percent giving $2,000 to the township. The organization which promotes organ donation reached out to

Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli who agreed to partner with them to spread the word about the importance of organ donation.

“It is truly amazing how much the township gives back to the community. I have never seen anything like it, said Jennifer Aguilar, community outreach specialist for Gift of Hope. “We are proud to partner with them.”

The annual Christmas Care program is a tradition that has become a staple of the township’s December programs for the past two decades to brighten the holiday season for families in need.

Bishop Noll Student Receives Lilly Endowment Scholarship scholarship is given by the Legacy Foundation.

“Receiving this scholarship is the biggest honor and it is the biggest accomplishment of my life,” he said. “It is a huge honor to represent Bishop Noll and Lake County with this scholarship. Nothing but glory to God for this opportunity. I have known about this scholarship since I was little and I always thought how cool it would be to win. Now I actually get to live out this childhood dream.

It is a huge humbling accomplishment that makes me happy to know that I have made an impact in school and in my community.”

Quintero is Bishop Noll’s 12th Lilly Scholarship winner since the statewide program began in 1998.

After hearing the good news, Quintero felt thankful and honored to have this opportunity.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I am getting into the real estate investing business. I am in the process of buying/selling real estate for little or no money down. Since contracts are already pre-written and are fill-in-the-blanks, I see no need to go with a real estate broker. Do you have information on writing a “win/ win” contract for real estate investing?

Answer: Real estate transactions are held together by written agreements accepted by both buyers and sellers. The act of acceptance suggests that each side is getting something from the deal, so all agreements can be seen as “win/win” arrangements.

When I hear that someone wants a “win/ win” agreement for real estate investing and no money down, I instantly wonder why the agreements used generally by local real estate brokers are somehow insufficient for this purpose—and why some investment gurus suggest avoiding real estate brokers altogether.

Perhaps it’s the definition of “win/win” that’s confusing—some people see “win/ win” as a code expression which really means one of the parties is accepting terms which are hugely unfavorable.

As to “no money down” transactions, the VA loan program has offered such financing for five decades. No “win/win” contracts are needed by qualified buyers to obtain such financing. These days, apart from the VA program, zero-down-payment mortgages are pretty much impossible for borrowers to get.

Given that real estate agreements routinely have localized requirements, the best approach is to speak with a local broker or attorney to obtain specific forms.

Since you wrote for advice, let me give you a little bit more. If you want a real “win/win” real estate investment business, then be sure to use a real estate broker and attorney for all your real estate transactions.

INDOT Mobile App for Apple, Android this tool for motorists, especially as we approach one of the busiest weeks for travel of the year,� Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe McGuinness said. “The new app is one more example of INDOT’s commitment to providing great customer service; the features can help travelers plan ahead, avoid delays, and have a safe trip to their holiday destinations.�

The INDOT mobile app also makes it easy to report roadway hazards, repair needs, and other concerns. Customers can also opt-in to receive email alerts on current and future INDOT construction projects and maintenance activities right from the app.

INDOT’s mobile app reports information for interstates, U.S. routes and state highways in Indiana. It does not include information on county roads or city streets.

The Indiana Department of Transportation announced the agency’s new mobile app is now available for free download for iPhone or iPad users through the App Store and Android users through Google Play.

Time for New Year’s Financial Resolutions BOB KRYGSHELD It’s just about time for some New Year’s resolutions. Would you like to study a new language, take up a musical instrument or visit the gym more often? All these are worthy goals, of course, but why not also add some financial resolutions?

Here are some ideas to think about: • Increase contributions to your employersponsored retirement plan. For 2018, you can contribute up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older) to your 401(k), 403(b), or a 457(b) plan.

It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while your earnings can grow tax-deferred. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.

• Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2018, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, ($6,500 for 50 or older). (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, depending on your income, and your earnings can grow tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings can grow tax-free, provided you don’t start taking earnings withdrawals until you are 59-1/2 and you’ve have had your account at least five years. You can put virtually any investment in an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your employer plan.

• Build an emergency fund.

Try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living

expenses held in a lowrisk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping into your longterm investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair.

• Control your debts. It’s never easy, but do what you can to keep your debts under control. The less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future.

• Don’t overreact to changes in the financial markets. We’ve had a long run of rising stock prices—but it won’t last forever. If we experience a sharp market downturn in 2018, don’t overreact by taking a “time out” from investing. Market drops are a normal feature of the investment landscape, and you may ultimately gain an advantage by buying new shares when their prices are down.

• Review your goals and risk tolerance. At least once in 2018, take some time (we recommend with the help of a financial professional) to review your short- and longterm financial goals and try to determine if your investment portfolio is still appropriate for these goals. At the same time, you’ll want to re-evaluate your risk tolerance to ensure you’re not taking too much risk—or possibly too little risk—with your investments.

Do your best to stick with these resolutions throughout the coming year. At a minimum, they can help you improve your investment habits— and they may improve your financial picture far beyond 2018.
