CSS: Cascading Styl e Sheets The Language of Web Design

What is CSS? Key Concepts to Understand: CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a styling language used to control the visual appearance of web pages

It separates content (HTML) from presentation, keeping code clean and organized

CSS controls layout, colors, fonts, spacing, and the overall look of a website

Core CSS Concepts 1

Selectors target HTML elements to apply styles.

3

Values specify the settings assigned to each property.

2

Properties define what aspect of an element to style.

4

Cascade & Specificity determine which styles are applied.

Step 4: CSS Syntax A selector targets the HTML element you want to style (e.g., p, h1, .class). A declaration block uses curly braces { } to wrap one or more style rules. Each rule is a property-value pair, like color: red; or font-size: 16px;

CSS Properties Too Big: Styling Better: CSS Properties More Specific: CSS Layout Properties Focused Question: How do color & typography, box model (margin, padding, border), layout (flexbox, grid), and positioning work together in CSS?

What Makes Good CSS?

Meaningful Class Names: Use descriptive, semantic names like .nav-menu instead of .div1 for readable, maintainable code. Organized Stylesheets: Group related styles together and use comments to separate sections for easy navigation. CSS Variables: Define reusable values with -primary-color or --font-size-base to keep styles consistent and easy to update.

Mobile-First Approach: Start with styles for small screens, then use min-width media queries to scale up for larger devices.

Low Specificity: Avoid overly specific selectors and !important to keep styles flexible and easy to override.
