Location: Charlie’s Place

Charlie’s Place is considered the birthplace of the Carolina Beach Music that appeared as a combination of African American R&B, Jazz, Swing, and Pop music. At Charlie’s Place, people of all backgrounds and races were allowed to come together to dance, listen to music, and have fun.

Experience Tip: Take a tour during your visit and make sure to check out the small shops in what used to be the motel units of Charlie’s Place.

“Up On the Roof” by The Drifters

Location: Tin Roof

When bringing a group to The Beach, transportation is an important part of your experience. We know that in order to enjoy everything our 60 miles of beach and 14 unique communities have to offer, your group needs to be able to easily get to our area and have a reliable way to get around the Grand Strand once you’re here.

Flying to The Beach

Getting to the Myrtle Beach area is easy when you fly. Centrally located and close to many major accommodations and attractions, Myrtle Beach International Airport — recently named best small airport in the U.S. two years in a row — is a great way to get here. You can fly to MYR on any of 10 great airline partners including:

MYR serves as the area’s only commercial airport, though there are other local general aviation airports serving the private and corporate sectors flying to the Grand Strand.

Driving at The Beach

Accessibility is one of the key factors in many groups choosing the Myrtle Beach area. Motorcoach charters and individuals can travel using both U.S. routes 17 and 501, as well as S.C. 9 that provide direct access to the Myrtle Beach area from Interstates 95 and 20.

The 28-mile-long Veterans Highway (S.C. 22) offers an additional route from U.S. 501 to S.C. 17. Carolina Bays Parkway, also known as S.C. 31, is popular with locals and extends from S.C. 9 to U.S. 501 and S.C. 707. There are future plans to extend Carolina Bays Parkway even further south.

Public Transportation

The Coast RTA public transportation service provides public, reliable and affordable bus transportation along major routes throughout the Myrtle Beach area.

Coast RTA operates a FREE Entertainment Shuttle each summer through Labor Day. The Shuttle runs every 30-35 minutes from 11 AM until 11 PM daily.

Points of interests along the Entertainment Shuttle include Broadway at the Beach, Broadway Grand Prix, Family Kingdom Amusement Park, Helicopter Adventures, Hollywood Wax Museum, Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Myrtle Waves, Ripken Experience and SkyWheel Myrtle Beach, as well as select dining, shopping and hotels.

Car Rentals

Rental car companies operating out of Myrtle Beach International Airport make getting to your final destination easy. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar Rent a Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz, National, and Thrifty Rental all serve arriving visitors from the airport.

Rideshare & Taxi Services

Uber & Lyft are available in the Grand Strand. Car services can be requested, on respective apps, via your cell phone. Download Uber or Lyft and request a driver to pick you up, much like a taxi service. All transactions are handled through the app, so you never have to exchange cash or pull out your credit card.

The Myrtle Beach area has an efficient and impressive taxi system. The numerous taxi companies each have their own phone number, but nearly all respond to a common dispatcher.

ACCESSIBILITY AT The Beach

In an effort to make The Beach accessible to all visitors, many of our communities offer beach-going wheelchairs available for use at no cost. The chairs are equipped with balloon tires and safety belts and can be reserved by contacting the city or municipality as shown below.

Looking to expand your vacation past the standard attractions? Look no further! Discover 6 under-the-radar spots that locals love and visitors often miss.

1. Atalaya Castle

Located in Murrells Inlet, Atalaya Castle provides a glimpse into the past as you walk through the halls of this Moorishstyle castle. This historic landmark was constructed in the early 1930s to help support the regional economy during the Great Depressions.

Local Tip: Visit during the early mornings in winter and spring to witness a magical light through the vines when the castle is quiet and serene.

2. Charlie’s Place

From the late 1930s to early 1960s, Charlie’s Place was a popular nightclub where early Motown performers brought their music in the days prior to integration. This was a place where everyone was welcome, and history was made through music and dance.

Local Tip: After your tour, stop by the storefronts located in some of the old motel rooms alongside the main building.

3. Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum

For 13 years before the museum first opened to the public in 1997, a small group of local visionaries came together to start something great. The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum was given the Verner Award in 2013 for its role as an advocate and supporter of the arts.

Local Tip: Make sure to check out the website before you plan your visit to align it with workshops, gallery receptions, and more.

Charlie’s Place

4. Horry County Bike & Run Park

This 7-mile bike and run park is located between Carolina Forest and the Intracoastal waterway. Known by locals as “The Hulk,” it is the only trail of its kind in the immediate area and will help you get a good workout in.

Local Tip: Explore the trails on early mornings for cooler weather before connecting your journey to the nearby paths leading to Market Commons for breakfast at a local coffee shop.

5. Warbird Park

Warbird Park is home to several retired fi ghter aircraft and is dedicated to the many men and women of the United States Air Force. This historical park is located just inside the old “Myrtle Beach Air Force Base,” which used to be home to the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing.

Local Tip: Make time during your busy trip to the beach to have a calm moment of remembrance by visiting memorials like the World War II Memorial or the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial coming Spring of 2026.

6. Wild Woods Farm

Located in Conway, Wild Woods Farm has a variety of exhibits to highlight animals from all over the world. They strive to create a fun and interactive experience for all ages with plenty of opportunities to learn about the animals.

Local Tip: Visit close to opening on a weekday morning to explore the petting zoo barns during the quietest times of the day.

A short drive south along U.S. 17 will land you in Charleston. Three hundred years of rich history make Charleston a living monument to both the foundation and evolution of our nation.

Hundreds of historic and preserved structures grace the city’s narrow cobblestone streets, lined with picturesque homes.

Stroll through formal gardens, enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride, participate in a ghost tour or enjoy the vibrant downtown with top-notch shopping and restaurants.

Florence, S.C.

67 MILES • 1 HOUR, 20 MINUTE

DRIVE

Located to the west of The Beach, the Florence region is packed with heritage sites worth the drive.

The S.C. Revolutionary Rivers Trail offers kayaking excursions

into the cypress and tupelo-laden hiding spots of General Francis Marion, nicknamed “The Swamp Fox” by the British who couldn’t keep up with him during the Revolutionary War.

Visitors are in awe of the living artwork at The Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, designed and maintained by self-taught botanist/artist Pearl Fryar.

Florence downtown offers the new Florence Museum, live performances nearly every evening, and an array of restaurants offering dishes made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

Wilmington, N.C.

MILES • 1 HOUR, 30 MINUTE DRIVE

A short drive north over the North Carolina border will take you to Wilmington and surrounding Cape Fear coastal area.

Some of the port city’s many attractions include museums, historical sites, war memorials, battlefields, and more than 230 blocks of community designated as a National Register Historic District. The USS North Carolina Battleship is also a worthwhile stop, as it’s one of the most historic battleships in the nation.

Downtown you’ll find a revitalized scene of restaurants, breweries, shops and artisan galleries worth exploring.

Wilmington is also one of the nation’s top locations for film and television production and those visiting for the day will certainly enjoy taking a tour of a working film studio while there.

Bringing your reunion group to The Beach is a great decision that your members are sure to enjoy, but planning an outing can also be a lot of work. That’s why the Visit Myrtle Beach team has created the following checklist of items to help assist in your planning journey.

Make a Plan

Ideally planning for your event should start about a year in advance of when you want your reunion to happen. Key steps include:

• Decide on a date

• Target a location or locations

• Send a questionnaire for attendees to rank options for destination, activities and other key topics

Recruit Help

In addition to help within your group, you can always contact the Visit Myrtle Beach team for help in planning your event.

• Form a committee or committees to handle areas such as finances, entertainment, food, lodging, correspondence and welcoming

• Delegate tasks with detailed steps for each position

Get the Word Out

Start this promotional phase as early as possible for best results.

• Send out “Save the Date” postcards or newsletters — Contact us for complimentary pre-designed templates.

• Create social media accounts and/or Facebook posts specifi c to your event.

Set the agenda

Try not to overschedule your event! Remember the reunion is to give everyone the opportunity to reconnect and to make new memories. Your reunion agenda could include:
