The Black Pearl A RICH And VARIED HISTORY In the early 1930s, Atlantic Beach was formed as a vacation getaway for African American families. Nicknamed “The Black Pearl”, it became a popular vacation destination as black-owned businesses thrived in this small community. Many residents are descendants of the Gullah Geechee people, former slaves from the West Coast of Africa who lived and worked in the coastal areas around Jacksonville, Florida, to Wilmington, N.C. Today, residents of Atlantic Beach are working to preserve their rich heritage and traditions. Atlantic Beach is where “beach music” as we know it evolved. Atlantic Beach was a popular performance location for black musicians and would host events after hours that all people would draw to, including shows from many famous musicians such as Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, The Spinners, The Drifters and Chubby Checker.
Local's Tip Atlantic Beach is one of the best beaches to get married on the Grand Strand with unobstructed views of the ocean from the dunes.

elaxing alongside the Atlantic Ocean in a beach chair with a cold drink is a given while at The Beach, but there are so many more activities on the water to try.
Beyond the ocean, the beautiful marshes, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the scenic Waccamaw River all provide a perfect backdrop for a variety of water-centric activities.
WATERSPORTS If you're looking for fun aboard the waves, you can tackle the surf on a banana boat, take a surfing lesson, rent a jet ski, or go windsurfing or kite boarding and let the breeze take you for a ride. A speedy airboat is a fun way to get around, and parasailing will send you toward the heavens for a thrilling new vantage point of the Grand Strand. Head to North Myrtle Beach for a unique experience, and try your hand — or more aptly, your feet — at wakeboarding or kneeboarding. Here you can also cool off by playing on an inflatable aqua park that floats atop a lake.

The Shag IT'S TIME TO TRY
THINGS TO DO
S.C.'S FAVORITE DANCE The Myrtle Beach area is the birthplace of South Carolina’s official state dance — the Shag. Chances are pretty good that when you are in North Myrtle Beach, you’ll hear beach music along the famed Ocean Drive area. It was on this strip that South Carolina’s official state dance was born in the 1940s. While some steps may remind you of the jitterbug or different swing dances, the Shag is smoother and moves at a slower pace. It’s worth the trip to Ocean Drive to check out the dancers, many of whom participate twice a year in a shagging migration to this part of the coast. There are even junior shagging events for younger participants, so no one misses out on the classic Carolina fun.

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL SITES The Myrtle Beach area has been greatly influenced by its African American heritage and roots that date back to the 1700s. From what we eat to the way we speak, so much of who we are can be traced back to the African American history in the region.
Brookgreen Gardens
The over 9,000 acres are located on the site of four former rice plantations in Murrells Inlet. It is home to a Lowcountry History Center and Lowcountry Trail which tell the history of what life was like on a rice plantation. Brookgreen also offers several Gullah Geechee historical programs throughout the year.
L.W. Paul Living History Farm
Before The Beach became a vacation destination, the local economy was driven by agriculture. Take a trip back to that period at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. This 17-acre farm gives visitors an idea of what it was like to live in the region between 1900 and 1955. Visitors can take part in activities such as plowing with mules, making lye soap and milking cows.
Hobcaw Barony
Located between the Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this 16,000-acre property is dedicated to research and education in history and ecology. It includes buildings and sites that reflect the lives of African Americans from the early 19th century through the first half of the 20th century.

Charlie's Place — home to the former Fitzgerald Hotel — is a site that honors Charlie Fitzgerald and his wife, Sarah. The couple owned a nightclub where famous musicians, such as Little Richard and Billie Holiday, performed their music from the 1930s to 1960s. A taste of the sea
Myrtle Beach has long been known as a seafood capital along the east coast. We're known not only for the quality of our locally-caught, fresh seafood, but also for the great diversity of options our restaurant scene offers. Here you'll find everything from tropical beach bars with live entertainment, to fine dining establishments with breathtaking waterfront views to grandiose family-friendly buffets serving hundreds of items. At area’s northern end, North Carolina-style Calabash reigns supreme, with traditional lightly breaded, fried seafood meals. Further south, you’ll be in the heart of the Lowcountry, where chefs use local ingredients such as Carolina rice, stone-ground grits, shrimp, blue crab, grouper, and country ham in traditional recipes handed down from the Gullah community of the southeastern coastal states.
Cuisine with southern flair
Barbecue in the South – a match made in heaven! From finger-licking good soul food to classic Carolina style pulled pork, Myrtle Beach is home to a myriad of restaurants serving up great southern cuisine your favorite way. Did you know that BBQ sauce is different in various regions of the country? But in South Carolina, we like to welcome all sauces: mustard (Carolina style), heavy tomato, light tomato, and vinegar and pepper (South Carolina stye) are all served right here. cohol, look at a phone, or nap while your children are swimming. Teach Kids to Swim - It is recommended that your child take swimming lessons prior to going on vacation where pools and the beach are the main attractions, even if they teach basic skills in the water. Use Life Jackets - Do not use air filled or foam toys, such as water wings, noodles, or inner tubes as they are not designed to keep children safe from drowning. Enter Water Feet First - Jumping or diving into too shallow water can cause injuries that are preventable by knowing the depth of the pool. Never Swim Alone - Even for confident swimmers, it is important to use a buddy system to prevent an emergency. Learn CPR - Everyone, regardless if you have children, should learn CPR for emergency situations.

THE MYRTLE BEACH AREA GUIDE TO SWIM AND BEACH SAFETY
Check Beach my
FAQ: If there is a swimming advisory at my favorite beach, does that mean water there is generally not safe? No. Short-term swim advisories are for isolated spots at monitoring locations where swimming is not advised. Most advisories are temporary – lasting only a day or two.
South Carolina beach monitoring season begins May 1 and runs through October 1. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) routinely collects water samples at more than 120 locations along South Carolina’s beaches. If high numbers of bacteria are found, they issue an advisory for that portion of the beach.
What is tested in beach water monitoring samples?
Advisories do not mean that the beach is closed. Wading, fishing and shell collecting do not pose a risk. Advisories are often issued after heavy rainfalls when higher bacteria counts are detected and often last less than 24 hours. The advisory is lifted when sample results fall below the limit of 104CFU/100mL.
What’s the best way to determine the most accurate, up-to-date information about the water quality at my favorite beach?
CheckMyBeach.com
Enterococcus bacteria are tested in the samples to indicate presence of bacteria in the water. Elevated levels of these bacteria can indicate possible contamination for a short period of time.
Visit www.CheckYourBeach.com and use the interactive GIS tool to find your beach and check the most recent test results for the area, as well as find information on all area beach access points and amenities.

HOSTING A WEDDING ON The Beach Of course, the most popular venue for any wedding at The Beach is on the sand.
If you're planning to get married on the beach, it's important to do your research first though, since depending on where you are on the beach, there may be restrictions on how elaborate the ceremony can be. If you are on a public beach, you can still have your wedding, but it can’t be commercial (meaning no tents, chairs or commercial equipment allowed). There are, however, private portions of the beach, where there are no restrictions on commercially-produced weddings.
MARRIAGE LICENSES IN S.C. Another one of the incentives to getting married in South Carolina is how easy it is to get a marriage license here compared to other states. A license may be obtained in any county courthouse within the state for approximately $50. A photo ID and social security number are required and the license is good for the entire state and has no expiration date. Applications must be on file at least 24 hours before a license can be issued. Couples may fill out applications at the Government & Justice Centre in Conway. For more information, call (843) 915-5370.

ACCOMMODATIONS
HOTELS, MOTELS & RESORTS Grand Strand visitors will find every imaginable style of pampering in a glittering selection of high-rise hotels, resorts, and quaint motels that are all too eager to please. Whether polished and formal, laid-back casual, these hotels and motels offer their own interpretation of luxury, good manners and service. Because the area is home to one of the largest hotel-motel per capita on the East Coast, there’s a room and budget to suit everyone’s own lifestyle. Hotels and motels provide much more than just a bed. Many rooms have kitchens, separate living rooms, Internet access, workout rooms and spas. You provide the guests; they’ll provide the accommodations. The memories are on the house.
VACATION RENTALS & BEACH HOMES Vacation rentals are fantastic and affordable options for couples, golfers or several families gathering for a reunion. From cottages nestled in the dunes of Pawleys Island, to towering condos overlooking the North Myrtle Beach seaside bustle, there are options to fit your taste and budget. Furnished with kitchens, vacation rentals provide an opportunity to bring out the chef in you and cook in. Each one is fully furnished and decorated to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The Myrtle Beach area is a fantastic place to look for vacation rentals because they are so plentiful along the 60-mile stretch of coastline. A vacation home is a larger space so more people can travel together and split the cost of the rental. With multigenerational travel on the rise — grandma, aunt, mom, dad and kids all traveling together —it's an easy way to be comfortable and share intimate travel memories together in a larger space.
