Welcome to Issue 18 of The Fountain Lots of BEES in this issue, and while looking for a suitable photo I found this little cartoon, which reminded me a little of myself at the time, as I was putting together three magazines while juggling all those back-to-school balls! Aboyne is full of busy bees to again we enter a new season, buzzing. The Bike Park has been busy gearing up for a new funding phase while numerous groups are restarting after the summer, from politics, poetry and cinema to history and crafts. Even the Big Yin is set to make an appearance on screen in November... Businesses continue to thrive and as the turning season often focuses the mind on health and wellbeing, we have a few features from the experts who can help you to feel your best, every day. Bike Park tackles second Fundraising Phase
Aboyne Bike Park has entered Phase II of its fundraising campaign with the launch of a JustGiving page and a special event. The community project was built in 2013 in Bellwood and is managed by a voluntary committee. They have recently being granted planning permission to extend the bike park to add an additional run and a new pump track, and they also need funding to maintain the existing popular facility. While the group works proactively to secure funding to assist in the development of Phase II, they are also taking positive action to raise funds in the community and in mid-September they hosted a special event at the Victory Hall, attempting a turbo trainer cycle distance challenge from Aboyne to its twin town of Martignas-SurJalle, (no mean feat at 1,168 miles!) You can find out more about Aboyne Bike Park and the funding campaign and how to donate or support it via their Facebook Page, or on Trailforks. Planning permission has been secured by Mid Deeside Community Council (MDCC) for a large new triple-panelled doublesided noticeboard in the centre of Aboyne, near the bus stop opposite the Victory Hall. It will be used for a wide variety of community, business and tourist information, replacing an existing under-sized noticeboard, which it is hoped to relocate to Dinnet (pending planning permission). Funding is largely in place, with generous grants from Mid Deeside Community Trust, Marr Area committee and the National Lottery Fund. This should allow purchase and installation to proceed later in 2019. MDCC is looking for new members to work on projects like this to improve the lives of everyone in our community. Poetry Please! Group meets in Library
A informal poetry reading group is set to start its new season at Aboyne Library. It is led by Duncan Lockerbie and Eddie Gibbons of Tapsalteerie, a Scots and English poetry publishing house based in Tarland. Participants can collect a book from the library to read before the group meets. For more information ask at the library or send the group a message on Facebook. Duncan told The Fountain: “We’re a friendly wee group and you don’t have to be an expert poetry reader to join us, or remember anything you did about poetry at school! We focus on new Scottish poetry, which has a flourishing scene at the moment, and cover a diverse range of different poets. Once or twice a season we organise a live reading where a poet joins us over a video chat to read and discuss their work. The aim is really to demystify the whole thing and show that poetry can be as easily accessible, enjoyable and rewarding as any other type of reading.” The first meeting of the new season is September 30th, 6-7pm, when they will be discussing the first half of Nadine Aisha Jassat’s Let Me Tell You This – ‘an electrifying debut collection from a
powerful new voice in UK poetry’. The group will meet at the same time on the last Monday of the month until May 2020. Why not give it a go?
1st Aboyne Brownies has now found volunteers needed to keep the pack going and are looking for girls aged 7-10 to join as a Brownie. They meet every Tuesday in Aboyne Scout Hut from 5.45pm-7pm. Anyone interested should contact Kirsty Robertson on kirstyrobertson700@ yahoo.co.uk

Group Focus: Aboyne Craft Club All ability levels welcome, says Kate Boressen
Aboyne Craft Club meets weekly in the Bowling Club. We have about 60 members from Aboyne and surrounding villages. All are welcome, whatever their crafting ability, and there is always someone willing to help teach new skills. As well as doing our own craft projects, we enjoy trips to places of interest, demonstrations, workshops and meals out. We hold a Craft Exhibition every two years in the Victory Hall. This is the time when we display for public viewing items the club members have made. We hold a tombola and competitions at this event to raise money for local charities. The next exhibition will be held 23-25 May 2020. We are all about Patchwork, Embroidery, Knitting, Stitching, Cardmaking, Painting and lots more besides.

Billy Connolly’s final stand-up tour hits the big screen at Aboyne Theatre this winter when The Sex Life of Bandages (18) can be seen on Friday November 1st. Screening as a special one-nightonly event, Connolly will muse upon his career, life and legacy in a deeply personal interview filmed exclusively for cinema audiences. Recorded during the Australian leg of his 2015 tour, his whip-smart routine is a riotous journey filled with outrageous tales and blistering observations of everyday absurdities. Volunteers Invited to Everything Electronic
Have you heard about Cromar Future Group’s “Everything Electronics” youth club? It meets every Monday evening 6.30 to 8 pm at Tarland’s MacRobert hall. The creative industries are 20% larger than the car industry and employ 3 times as many people. The biggest sector by far is games and software which is four times the size of music, arts and culture combined. Everything Electronics focuses on helping youngsters learn some of the basic skills used in these industries, so they can “Develop skills whilst having fun”. It features activities which include coding, filming, stop motion animation, graphic design, and electronics. Already it has an awesome coding section and a very popular graphic design section. We are just finishing off our first video featuring Marty robots constructed by the members. It is free to all who are 18 or under.

Games attracts international visitors
Co-founder’s relatives came 3,000 miles, writes Ian McLaren
Sun cream and ice cream were the order of the day on Saturday as Aboyne Highland Games basked in warm sunshine. A crowd numbering around 10,500 packed on to Aboyne Green to enjoy the Aberdeenshire village’s annual celebration of Scottish traditional sports, culture and music. Held under the patronage of Granville Gordon, the 13th Marquis of Huntly, the event once again welcomed visitors from across the globe. Tourists from Columbia, Kenya, New Zealand and Thailand all marked their countries of origin on a world map in the overseas tent. Among the crowds were Duncan Mackintosh, his wife Annie and their daughters Eliza and Adelaide who had travelled from their home in the United States to attend Aboyne Highland Games. The family had made the 3,000-mile journey to acknowledge the role Duncan’s great-grandfather, William Mackintosh, had played in helping to found the event in 1867.

Indy Books and Blethers Ladies who are curious about independence, perhaps for the first time, are invited to join other women online or in cafes throughout beautiful Deeside. Indy Books & Blethers is a new community group that started in April and so far have met in Aboyne, Drumoak and Cambus O’ May, Ballater. There is a big bag of books to borrow and discussion is always interesting and respectful. Founding member, Yvonne StevensonRobb from Banchory, thought there might be demand because of how visible and changeable politics has been as a result of the current shifting political landscape. She noticed that many people were asking questions and considering politics in a different way. Keen to aid communication between different opinions and out of a desire to provide information to those asking questions, she put a reference library of political books together and decided to set up a network so people could come together, become informed and discuss politics of self-determination at a local, considered level. ‘I checked the local libraries and bookshops and thought it would be an idea to get a selection of books and resources together. I moved here a little over four years ago, with a newborn baby and a wobbly walker in tow. I knew a fair smattering of local faces to say “Hello” to, but was yet to find my true place amongst my peers. Thus, for the first few months of village life I actually found my place of salvation within the local charity shop of HomeStart. I would go in, rain or shine, with my children and be welcomed by the volunteers. During my darker days, I always found the charity shop to be a place of hope. I recently went to talk to the volunteers there to find out more about what they do, and why they do it. Tery, Liz, Molly and Carol were such a delight as they showed me around their operations. They spoke to me of how they came to volunteer at HomeStart, beginning for many as a way to meet new people and as a way of giving back to others. It became apparent very quickly though that their time in the shop wasn’t a sense of obligation or duty. There was a real energy and buzz between the ladies as they went about helping customers, organising stock and labelling items (I actually managed some sneaky purchases before they were released to the shop floor – if you see me sporting a new shirt feel free to compliment me). After wrapping up my chat with the Fabulous Four I took to the shop and proceeded to marvel at the range of donations for sale. There were wetsuits, wall hangings, books upon books (my library has since inflated in size) and much more. I came away with a beautiful skirt for my daughter,

some books for my son and toys for my dog (one can not forgot one’s first baby). Shopping in charity shops has always been a welcome break on my bank balance, but it so much more than that. All money raised at the shop goes towards assisting vulnerable families with young children throughout the Deeside area.
