Welcome to issue one of The Fly under Myriad Pro. You may have already been familiar with the Fly as an online publication. Well now it’s in print too (online versions will be readable at issuu.com) with more room for advertising and generally peddling what Banchory has to offer (which seems to be quite a lot!)

Contributions from any local groups or organisations/random causes are welcome at any time; these appear for free as long as there is space. Advertising starts at £27.

I’m based in Ballater and, as the front cover suggests, it’s going to take me some time (and a lot of caffeine! Maybe some cake?) to find out what makes this rapidly changing town tick.

What a good idea!

The recent questionnaire from Busy Banchory asking folk to let us know what they’d like to do in and around the town drew a wide and varied response. As well as suggestions for ‘classes’ there were quite a few requests that could be met through a less structured approach. I’m not sure what the demand is for classes in Welsh, foraging or wine tasting but these were suggested by one or more respondents.

There are also a small number of people looking to play board games or table tennis.

We’re a multi-talented community and somewhere in our midst there will be someone who could help a would-be forager, an ad hoc table tennis group who could do with a new member or even a Welsh speaker who could offer a bit of tutoring. The problem is how to link the ‘learner’ with the ‘expert’. And that’s where the good idea comes in.

What we’d like to do is to establish a network, a directory of people who could lend a hand to somebody who wants to learn something or just to share an activity together.

It’s a bit tricky to know how to start but perhaps the best way is for anyone wanting a ‘link’ to get in touch. We can try to facilitate connections and begin to compile a directory of community learning opportunities. So… If you like the idea and want our help to pursue your own interest, please get in touch at banchorycommunity@hotmail.com or drop a note into Number 1.

The Forget Me Not Club The Forget Me Not Club, the Banchory based Dementia support charity, will be holding their annual Burns Supper at the Banchory Lodge on January 25th.

Forget Me Not Club rely on fundraising events like this one in order to continue providing support and activities at their resource centre, Benne� House on Arbeadie Road in Banchory.

They have established a new branch of their charity now called Active Forget Me Not. Active Forget Me Not Club meets at Knockburn Sports Loch two days a week and also enjoy local walks from Benne� House, they are able to provide more physically challenging activities for people living with dementia who still want to enjoy sports and outdoor activities.

Manager Joanne Ross said: “We are really looking forward to celebrating Burns night in such a beautiful se�ng, we have some very talented speakers lined up and it promises to be a great evening.”

Pantomime Time...

oh no it isn’t, writes Drew Young It’s that time of year again. When the clocks go back our thoughts turn to Christmas and to that essential part of the fun – a pantomime! The multi-talented Banchory Drama Club has been working hard since August to bring this unique experience to life This year’s panto is a local version of the Hansel and Gretel story. But not content with one pair of siblings, the writer has managed to jam in three. And, amongst other characters, a Baron, a Queen, a Wolf, a Witch, Li�le Red Riding Hood, the Gingerbread Man, and, of course Dame Chopitov and her husband Woody.

The plot is complicated but doesn’t ma�er much in any event as basically it’s a story of good and evil, of foolishness and cunning, of greed and friendship and of love. Will love and friendship win out in the end?

Music, laughter, colour, spectacle, dance and a couple of Superdomestics.

What more can anyone want to start Christmas with a bang...

The most important part of any pantomime is the audience, so we invite everybody along to the Town Hall on the 6th, 7th and 8th of December to enjoy planned (and possibly some unplanned) laughter. Tickets will be available in the library or from members of the cast.

Something to think about?

As part of a general initiative to establish new discussion and learning opportunities in the Banchory area, we are interested in se�ng up a Philosophy Discussion Group which would meet regularly(ish) in the area.

• Are you an expert – can you help us set this up, or even play a regular part?

• Are you a self-taught interested person who would be willing to join in?

• Are you a total novice, but would like some serious discussions on fascinating topics?

At this stage we see a relatively formal format – pre-chosen topics, chairperson to control, etc. but who knows how it will evolve. We are hoping to set up an initial “how can we do this” meeting early next year, so even if you don’t know your Aristotle from your Zeno, but are interested in finding out, do get in contact.

Or even if you don’t wish to be involved, but have comments to guide us, please let us know.

Welcome to Number One – Community Ma�ers, your community cafe. Number One opened in 2017 in Sco� Skinner Square. From the outside you see the cafe with seating for 20 people but what you don’t see is all the activities that are going on seven days a week.

The cafe is also a training kitchen. It is managed by volunteers who make all the food onsite, often using produce that is donated by the Co-op or Tesco. Good home-made soups and home bakes are the speciality. £5 will buy you a two-course lunch and a drink.

As the cafe is only open Monday to Thursday it is available to rent Friday to Sunday and evenings. We have recently welcomed the Cuppa Cafe which is a dementia-friendly cafe open on the last Friday of the month. Cookery classes are often held on Saturday.

Like the Tardis, the cafe is much larger than you think; there are two more rooms which are used for activities. This term we have art on Monday, counselling on Tuesday and Spanish on Wednesday. Rooms are available to hire for £5 per hour. Look out for new classes advertised in our window and Facebook page.

Dibble’s Doodles your favourite gardening columnist continues...

The leaves are now all just about off the trees and I could swear that most seem to have fallen in my garden. I am waiting on a few windy days to do the job of sweeping them into big piles, making disposing of them a li�le easier. It will also make finding the doggy do-do on the lawn easier. I try to do my civic duty when out dog-walking by scooping the poop but finding the camouflaged deposit at this time of year isn’t always easy. Anyway, enough of the lavatorial discussions.

This is the time of year when gardening chores are much less arduous, unless of course you decide to move shrubs around that have outgrown their space, in which case now is the best time to do it, but not if the ground is frozen solid! Tip:- Avoid walking on lawns on frosty mornings. It can damage the grass and lead to brown footprint-shaped marks.

I visited the local garden centre last week to purchase some new shrubs. It is interesting the descriptions on some of the plant labels. I have learned that “Vigorous” is code for “has a Napoleonic compulsion to take over the world,“Carefree” refers more to the plant’s a�tude than to your workload and “dwarf conifer” means that it will block out the view from your window in about three years.

Your blackcurrant, redcurrant and gooseberry bushes can also be pruned at this time of year. However, don’t make the mistake that I once did, blackcurrants are pruned differently to redcurrants and gooseberries, so for two years I had no redcurrants at all.

I turned the compost heap this morning – it was a good way of keeping warm as there was a hard frost

last night. I noticed the heap was seething with worms, which is great – could this be termed ‘global worming?’

If you are a real nerd this is a good time to clean all your old pots and seed trays, so that they are ready for next spring’s “flurry” of activity. I have be�er things to do with my time but it is true that cleaning will reduce pest and disease problems, and will reduce your propagation and sowing problems.

The Banchory Singers are busy preparing for their annual festive concert.

This year the theme is A Stage And Screen Christmas, so you will be treated to a selection from musical theatre, opera and television. There will be two performances in Banchory Town hall, Saturday 15th December at 7.30 pm, and Sunday 16th in the afternoon at 2.30 pm.

What do they do? Banchory District Initiative

Banchory District Initiative (BDI) was formed in 2003. The main focus of the organisation is to develop projects that improve community facilities and create more vibrant tourist amenities.

Having a track record is beneficial when seeking funding, and the BDI now has a good record of successful projects.

It also has a service level agreement with the shire council to facilitate meetings and support community action groups.

Previous successful projects include: Scolty Trails Improvement Project (STEP) Over ÂŁ200,000 was awarded by SNH, EU LEADER and local groups to improve the walking trails on Scolty Hill.

Sports Village (BANDSWIM) Many years of campaigning and a feasibility study has led to the development of the new Sports Village.

St Ternan Fair For ten years BDI organised the annual fair which was a revival of the traditional annual medieval fair.

Christmas Lights and Hanging Baskets In response to the reduction in council services, BDI has organised the hanging of Christmas street lights and hanging baskets. Funding comes from a variety of sources, including the sale of an annual calendar.

BDI co-ordinates a number of local projects. Some are managed by directors while others are given minimal support.

More information can be found on the website www.visitbanchory.com, but they include Bonny Banchory, Youth Industries, River Festival, Farmers’ Market, Walk to Health and the Mountain Bike Trails.

BDI will support a fledgling group to develop their project. The hardest part of a project is finding the volunteers to take on the risks of funding, finance and insurance.

After a year of fundraising for exciting new development plans, staff and volunteers here at Banchory-based arts centre, the Barn, are celebrating the successful outcome of our fundraising drive to deliver so far, over £200k for some well needed improvements to our popular community resource.

As well as improving the foyer and box office areas, we will be creating a new craft shop and workshop space scheduled to open in summer 2019 that will showcase local makers and also help raise much needed income for our arts charity.
