Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday! (do a little dance) Spring has come round again and, with it, a birthday! The BULLetin is one year old with this issue.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported its development over the past year, through advertising, supplying features or copy, or just giving words of encouragement (and my mum, who proofreads most issues...)

Where has the time gone? When I think back to the first issue, cobbled on a laptop in a hotel room after Ballater’s floods forced an impromptu change of habitat, I sometimes wonder if I were not just a little bit mad...

But, after a few ups and downs and a frankly sticky December, we are back up, and beyond, to super strength with 28 pages and lots of new advertisers. More copies have been printed this time round too, with plans to get more put through doors in the Alford area, a progression that befits a community magazine.

And there’s lots to celebrate in the region too. You’ll have to move quick to get your views on the Community Action Plan (p9). You also get the opportunity to delve back into the past on p16 and find out all about Walking Football on p10.

Plans for a Men’s Shed have come one step closer and there have been a few business developments on Main Street too.

Fairtrade fairy tales

Alford Village Fairtrade Group remains busy as it keeps up momentum trying to raise awareness of Fairtrade in the village.

A very successful event took place in March in the library at the Community Campus. Jackie Ross led a story telling session which was attended by over 30 children and 18 adults.

Jackie adapted the story of “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” and altered the eating habits of the tiger to one who would eat only Fairtrade food products.

Refreshments kindly donated by Alford Co-op and the ladies of Howe Trinity Fairtrade Group were enjoyed by everyone and a stall selling Fairtrade goods did brisk business.

Craigievar Kitchen Gardens Group is looking to establish a group of willing volunteers from the school and the community to grow, maintain and harvest plots in the Craigievar Kitchen Garden, situated behind Craigievar Castle.

The idea would be that they manage to look after the plot, perhaps look at ways to maintain costs of seeds through donations for the produce and that pupils from the school would have the opportunity to be part of this too.

A few people have already volunteered to help and, along with the curator from the castle, John Lemon, the group held a meeting in the middle of March to see if the project could get off the ground.

Film club seeks suggestions for new season

Craigievar Film Club’s season has ended but they are already planning the next one and need your help with suggestions for films you would like to see for the 2017/18 season.

The group looks to include a few interesting and current mainstream films, but their main aim is to put together a wide-ranging programme exploring non-mainstream work such as British independent films, foreign language films, documentaries, animations and revisiting “Golden Oldies”.

Donside’s Community Action Plan needs your voice to have teeth

People who live and work in the Howe of Alford have until the end of March to make their views known on how the area moves forward and develops.

Donside Community Council, which covers the villages and communities around and including Alford, Whitehouse, Tough, Keig, Montgarrie, Tullynessle, Muir of Fowlis, Craigievar, Cushnie and Bridge of Alford, is leading the process to produce a Community Action Plan (CAP).

The aim of creating a Community Action Plan is to bring together the hopes, goals and concerns of the community and make people think positively about what should be done to benefit the community. Then, most importantly, find ways of making things happen.

It provides an opportunity for local people to get involved not only by voicing their opinion but also by coming forward and helping make a difference, whether they do it by themselves or with the support of other agencies.

The community council says the important thing to remember is that it is the community’s plan – it’s your plan, it’s what you value about the Howe of Alford that is important and if you are part of the Howe of Alford Community, it’s your view that counts!

Surveys can be completed online at: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/AlfordCAP. Paper copies can be collected (and returned) at Alford Library/Community Campus, Post Office or Keig School. It is also available by email: roisin@marrareapartnership.org.uk.

The Howe of Alford Community Action Plan Survey will be live until March 31.

There will be a follow-up feedback and prioritising event in Alford Community Campus on June 17th, with exact time and location to be confirmed at the time of printing.

Walking Back to Happiness Group fills a niche for the over-50s, says Sandy Robertson

Walking Football is very much like normal 5/6/7-a-side football, except that running is not allowed (not a great problem for many of us!)

It started off a few years ago in England and has spread rapidly worldwide. It can be played outdoors or indoors on a pitch about one-third of the size of a normal football pitch.

Most clubs are for the over-50 age group and it’s a great way of keeping half fit and maintaining an interest in football long after our normal playing days are over.

We are primarily a club for over-50s, although we have a few youngsters in their 40s!

Aimed at combating social isolation in men, Men’s Sheds are open to all members of the local community. They offer opportunities for men to meet and undertake creative, physical, purposeful and recreational activities, and to share their skills and knowledge.

The Alford & District Men’s Shed Group’s Community Asset Transfer Stage 2 application was approved by the Marr Committee in January. The group can now enter stage 3, where legal representation is required in preparation for the final handover, stage 4.

Unlike other Men’s Sheds in the shire, which are using council surplus buildings, and are generally leased at a nominal sum, Alford & District hope to have complete ownership once the process is complete.

The site includes an allotment, orchard and sensory garden.

Demolition of the former community campus site where the proposed shed is based is presently under way and access is unlikely until the early summer.

Post Office settles in well to new home

The re-siting of Alford’s Main Street Post Office had a smooth transition on March 2 with the handover “running like clockwork”, according to former postmaster, Gordon Gunn: “We closed at 1pm and they opened at 1pm!”

W&M Murray’s Patty Wilkie said the new arrangement was working very well, and that it was already bringing her main business more customers: “I think a lot of people didn’t realise that if it didn’t come in here, we would lose the post office. The village has lost too much already, so we couldn’t let that happen.”

The BULLetin hopes to bring you news of Mr Gunn’s new venture in the summer issue, out in June.

Project needs your input to pave new way to the past

What Is The History of Alford Project?

There are many resources about Alford and the people who lived here in the past.

The village is unique in some ways with its connection to the railway, the companies that sprung from here and people who lived in and supported the village.

A small group of people representing Alford Historical Society, Alford Genealogy Group and the Heritage Museum are identifying and collecting resources on Alford’s history. This is with a view to archiving and presenting aspects of the area’s past in an accessible way for present and future generations.

What Can The Community Do? You are all essential elements of the project! So, how can you help?

In a number of ways: + Do you have any relevant newspapers, documents, letters or photos of the past that you would be willing to share? + Would you pass on our news to neighbours and relatives in case they have some interesting materials?

+ The final form of archiving has still to be decided; perhaps you can help here if you have experience in the past? + The plan is to set up a Facebook closed page initially; help from anyone with experience in this would be appreciated.

As Winter Turns To Spring...

Go For Gold’s Simon Sawers knows when he’s beat Well, what an unusual winter we’re having! There is virtually no snow in the hills and the poor ski centres are really suffering this year. We’ve had quite a lot of sun and the spring bulbs are a little ahead of their usual timetable.

However, I recently attempted the Munros of Driesh and Mayar which are accessed from Glen Doll as these are good winter hills, but happened upon a day when there was a lot of snow underfoot.

So much so that I was floundering through knee deep white stuff for long periods and then as I ascended, the crust on top sometimes took my weight and sometimes didn’t, and then as I got higher still it turned into a hard slippery surface requiring ice axe and crampons.

All this hard work took me far longer than planned and by the time I had got to the top of the Kilbo Path I was in the clouds and couldn’t distinguish between snow and fresh air! So I turned around.

The moral of this little story is to know when to turn around. Accidents happen when a number of factors combine when each factor, if occurring on its own, would be fairly innocuous.

The factors in this case were; a late start and taking longer than planned due to the heavy conditions, being tired, again due to the heavy conditions, very poor visibility, walking on steep slippery hard snow, short winter days, and being on my own (although being tracked by a SPOT satellite device). Knowing when to turn around is critical – the aim of the day is to get back home safely. The summit is not the aim – in fact, reaching the summit is only half of your day!

Enough of that! Spring is just around the corner and with the lack of winter snow, we will soon be able to easily get quite high and enjoy longer days in the hills. So this is the time to check your kit, get the maps out, perhaps refresh your hills skills – consider attending a course, get fitter, make arrangements with your friends and put dates into your diaries! We are about to change the clocks to summer time, or already have done so by the time you read this, so get energised and get out there!

As a postscript, you may have heard about the Tarland Trails proposal to create a large network of mountain bike trails on the southeast side of Pressendye with access from near Queen’s View. This new scheme sounds quite good and they are currently going through a process of consulting all interested parties and so if you are a hillwalker, horse rider, mountain biker, runner, orienteer, hunter/shooter/ fisher, or other interested party then you may wish to get in touch with them.

First impressions count, so make sure your garden is appealing and well kept. Trimming the hedge, tugging out weeds, sweeping the path and removing any rubbish that has blown in from the road will make a massive difference.

Flaky paint will make a garden seem shabby, so if necessary treat walls, fences or gates to a fresh coat. Finish by squirting a few drops of oil into the hinges of your gate to eliminate unwelcoming, piercing squeaks.

Although a lawn is considered the most desirable garden feature a patio or place to sit is not far behind, so make sure you keep this weed and clutter free.

Dull gardens can be given an instant pick-me-up by filling containers with seasonal bedding plants bought from the garden centre or nursery. Placed near the door, on windowsills or in a spot on the patio where they can be seen easily from the house, colourful containers will add a homely touch and a bit of cheer – If you do grow plants in containers, make sure they are healthy and replace any that are on their last legs.
