Twisted Burns night planned A Burns Night with a twist is promised on Saturday January 28th in aid of Donside Defibrillator.

You can enjoy gin cocktails and canapes, a five-course Scottish tasting dinner and relax and enjoy the gin bar and resident DJ until the small hours at Tullynessle Hall from 7pm to 12.30am.

Flying Pieman sees in the bells Stuck for New Year celebrations?

Tullynessle and Forbes Hall are bringing the Flying Pieman Ceilidh Band to their Hogmanay Ceilidh on Saturday December 31st.

There will be stovies and a raffle at this BYOB event, which runs from 7.30pm until the bells.

The Citizens Advice Bureau runs an outreach service in the Howe Trinity Church Centre every Tuesday morning by dedicated appointment. This service is one of seven operating in the Dee and Don valleys.

We cover Benefits and appeals; Consumer goods and services; Debt and Money Advice; Education; Employment; Health and Community Care; Housing (private/social rented, or owner-occupier); Immigration; Legal issues; NHS Concerns; Family and relationships; Tax processes; Travel; Utilities and Communications and much more.

So, if you have a problem you can’t resolve, need help with form-filling or online applications, or to talk through practical solutions with trained advisers, call 01224 747714 for a dedicated appointment in Alford. The service is free, confidential, nonjudgemental and independent.

Or can you help us? We have a wide range of volunteer roles from administrator to archivist, adviser to Board member. We deliver a well-regarded Adviser training course twice a year for those who would enjoy a satisfying, client-focused volunteering role which will make excellent use of your skills and allow for personal development.

And as a local charity, which is an accredited member of the Scottish Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux, we have vacancies for Board members who ensure that the Bureau works to the highest possible standards in every area of its operation. Every Board member has a remit and we are particularly seeking people with Health and Safety, IT & Telecomms, Human Resources and Publicity & Press skills to support the work of the Bureau.

On the move...

Plans may see Post Office take new roots

Alford’s Post Office on Main Street could move its counters into another established shop in the village under new plans.

The proposal, taking place in agreement with the present postmaster, is part of major modernisation programme across the Post Office network, and would see the facility moved to within W&R Murray on the opposite side.

Similar developments in neighbouring towns have proved controversial and a sixweek consulation exercise came to an end as The BULLetin went to print.

We took to Facebook to canvass how opinions stood in the village generally, and found them mixed but generally positive and in favour (see red bubbles).

Patricia Wilkie, proprietor of W&R Murray, also told The BULLetin: “We are pleased to have been considered to take on the Alford Post office as part of the modernisation scheme.

As a local business owner, we are conscious of the important role the post office plays in the community, especially now that many local banks have closed.

We were therefore keen to find a way to keep these services available to the public and local businesses.”

“I’m just glad the post office is staying in Alford. The new shop will provide more space and better parking. When the current shop is busy, more than 6-7 people waiting and the queue is outside” “We are lucky we are getting to keep our post office and should be thankful that someone is willing to have it in their shop. There would be plenty to complain about if it was closing not moving” “Absolutely leave it where it is!

It will end up sliding into oblivion and we’ll end up not having one! We’ve barely got a bank!”

“No harm in moving it. The premises will be much bigger. It’s difficult getting into the current one with a child’s buggie” “You can never get parked outside the current location. Ok if you have a disabled sticker, but I take an elderly lady there every week and I usually have to park in the main car park anyway. It’s a fair bit for her to walk so it’ll be far better at the new location”

“The proposed new location is a good size and stocks some interesting goods for sale. It also has plenty room to accommodate the items that the current post office sells and possibly more”

“I vote to move it. The existing location has outlived its use. The new site will allow access to disabled wheelchair users, something not available at present, and is close to the main car park so should assist everyone”

“My parents live in a small Highland village (much smaller than Alford) where their Post Office is in a card/gift/grocery store that also sells hot food (so a bit of everything!).

It’s always busy when I’m there and people go to the ‘Post Office’ to buy their papers and other wee bits so I think that moving the PO may encourage others to shop locally and see what other shops have to offer”

These Hills Can be Murder...

Go For Gold’s Simon Sawers takes us on a tour of Grahams This month I’m featuring the Grahams: Scottish hills between 2,000 and 2,500 feet in height with at least 150m drop all around. There are a good number of fine Grahams on our doorstep and at this time of year they make fine winter outings, being lower, involving shorter walks and are readily accessible.

In mid-November I took myself off for a three-day campervan trip to Glen Artney near Comrie to bag some Grahams. It was a fine few days with crisp dry air and a chill breeze higher up. Having climbed the Graham of Ben Venue near Aberfoyle on the way, I then had a full day on a lovely round encompassing the Grahams of Stuc na Cabaig (Beinn Dearg) and Mor Bheinn.

Superbly clear views and not a soul in sight! The next day saw me atop Uamh Bheag and with frequent snow showers sweeping through it was time to head home! Glen Artney, by the way, has an interesting old church and the Highland Boundary Fault runs along the whole glen with the Highlands to the North and the Lowlands to the South.

Our local Grahams include Pressendye, Mona Gowan, The Buck, Ladylea Hill, Geallaig Hill and Cooks Cairn. Each of these hills is only a short drive from home for those of us who live in inland Aberdeenshire and with the shorter daylight hours are perfect for a short and vigorous tramp. We are extremely lucky to live at the foot of Pressendye and an excellent route is to park in Tarland and do the round from there which takes 4 to 5 hours. Alternatively park near Tilly Lodge on the B9119 and take in the beautiful Queen’s View

overlooking the Howe of Cromar. On returning to Tarland you have a choice of two pubs or the coffee shop in the pharmacy for refreshments.

We belong to the very active XXL Hillwalking Club with weekends away most months to various parts of Scotland and a local day walk once a month. We are a very sociable group with a number of social activities throughout the year including our annual dinner and ceilidh coming up soon in Ballater. Here’s a suggestion for you: Perhaps consider joining a hillwalking club as a New Year’s resolution!

This is the fourth in a series of articles about hillwalking. Simon Sawers is an avid hillwalker having completed all the Munros and is a qualified Mountain Leader. He runs Go for Gold! Expeditions providing Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and Golf DofE residentials for young people.

Grahams were first listed by Fiona Torbet, nee Graham, who tragically went missing in Kintail in 1993 and who was subsequently found in the garden of the guest house she was staying in. The son of the owner of the guest house was charged with murder, convicted and then died in prison in 2007. A terrible story of the death of an incredible lady who loved the mountains which is told in a book called “Blood in The Glens”. A further Christmas present idea is the SMC publication “The Grahams and the Donalds” which details the routes of all 224 Grahams.

At this time of the year most people think there is not much that can be done in the winter garden. However, if weather conditions are kind there are a number of tasks that could be undertaken, including: Now is a great time for planting deciduous hedging and bare root trees as the roots will have a chance to develop.

Clumps of perennials that you weren’t able to divide in late autumn can be done early spring – providing the earth is dry enough and not frozen!

Make sure the crowns are kept free of rotting leaves as this can be detrimental to the new growth.

When the weather allows, add drainage to your lawns. This can be done with a fork. Plunge it in and work it back and forth to create a good-sized hole. Brush a mix of horticultural sand and soil improver in to the hole to stop it clogging. The worms will do the rest!

Don’t forget to feed garden birds – particularly after bad weather as seeds and food sources etc may be scarce, so encourage wildlife in by providing a variety of feeds.

If the weather prevents outside activity then take a look through the catalogues and websites for exciting new perennials and summer flowering bulbs to order and plan your 2017 garden.
