Alford may be as landlocked as they come, but there are still plenty of rivers and other water habitats around and on p14 the Aberdeenshire Community Planning Partnership (Marr) and the Sco�sh Fire and Rescue Service show you how to keep safe around them. An inspiring new book has been written in our midst that delves deeply into the ups and downs of life with a chronic mental illness. Though not always an easy read, I would thoroughly recommend Tara and Cameron Leipers’ book to anyone living or working with schizophrenia. It is a searing insight into the challenges presented on any day, let alone under lockdown.

The team at Grampian Transport Museum were delighted to reopen their doors to the public at the end of April for the summer season.

NOTICE BOA RD Netball Ladies Bounce Back!

As lockdown eases it’s starting to look possible to play netball again!

Alford Netball Club are looking to see how much interest there is in restarting the club - 6pm -7pm in the sports hall at Alford Community Campus.

For those who haven’t been before – it’s a fun club for ladies ranging in ages from 18 and upwards. We’re not in any league but have played at netball festivals in the past. If you enjoyed netball at school, but haven’t played since, this could be the club for you!

Cost is to be determined; previously it has been £10 for Netball Scotland affiliation, then between £3-5 a night.

Having been closed throughout 2020, Alford Heritage Museum expects to reopen on Thursday July 1st, following a programme of repairs and maintenance funded by Museums Galleries Scotland.

To ensure compliance with Covid advice, the museum will only be open Thursdays – Sundays and on Bank Holiday Mondays. Online pre-booking for timed tickets will be in operation to safely control visitor numbers; a one-way system will be in place around the museum; and the provision of contactless payment are just some of the changes which will be in place.

The Museum has just appointed two new Development Officers, again funded by Museums Galleries Scotland, to its team of volunteers. Lyza Riddell and Angela Main, who both live in Alford, will be with us for the next few months to help us to work with the community to attract more volunteers and to help us with our forthcoming community engagement survey.

The involvement of our local residents is crucial to the future development of the museum and we hope that most people will respond to our consultation when it is launched next month.

Lyza and Angela will be pleased to hear from any potential new volunteers and are happy to talk to local groups who might wish to use the museum and its collection for activities. Email them at alfordheritagemuseum@yahoo.co.uk.

Like all attractions, we anticipate a busy summer as people stay closer to home for their holidays. We have decided to offer free admission until the end of July to encourage local families who may not have visited before to come along and have a look. Donside Community Council News...

By the time you read this , elections to Donside Community Council will have taken place in preparation for our AGM on June 8th.

Like everyone else we have adapted to our circumstances over the last year. We continued to meet in the online world with varied success, given the remote edges of our area.

We continue to give support to local groups. At our last meeting a donation was made to Alford Gardening Club to buy plants and supplies for the tubes and baskets around the village. Now that our local shops are reopening, the floral displays will bring cheer and brighten even the dullest of days.

Water Safety Advice Highlighted ACCP recommends users visit Fire Service website

Aberdeenshire Community Planning Partnership (Marr) would like to draw people’s attention to safety around water in the region.

Scotland enjoys some of the most beautiful rivers, lochs, canals and reservoirs that the UK has to offer – they attract thousands of visitors each year, and Deeside is no exception.

With the continuation of the Year of Coasts and Waters into 2021, it’s important to remember though that if you’re visiting one of these spots, be that regularly or as a one-off, water can pose risks.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has put together some useful advice, aimed at runners, dog-walkers, fishers and drinkers, on their comprehensive website.

There is also advice on what to do if you find yourself in the water.

Go to www.firescotland.gov.uk/yoursafety/water-safety.aspx Parents, guardians and teachers can also use the information to talk to children about water safety.

Book places spotlight on family mental health Couple publish honest account of married life with schizophrenia

19 At some point in their lives, one in 100 people will suffer from an episode of schizophrenia and, each year, one in four will experience a mental health problem, according to Mind UK. At any one time, 220,000 people are being treated for schizophrenia in the UK by the NHS. Mental health can and does affect thousands of people in the UK and impacts on the lives of individuals and their relationships. Cameron Leiper was diagnosed with chronic paranoid schizophrenia in 1988, lives in Alford with his wife Tara, and a new book charts the struggles they have experienced.

Is This Real? has been co-written by the couple, allowing each author to express what life is like with mental illness at the centre of their relationship. It is a candid, thoughtful, and at times, unsettling account of their lives, revealing the upset and anxiety caused by the chasm between the rational and irrational as they go about daily activities.

The book, published by Cherish Editions, opens up the conversation surrounding schizophrenia, providing pragmatic and supportive advice to those whose lives have been impacted by the disorder.

Drawing on her own experience, Tara explores the way in which the condition has affected her and her husband’s relationship, discussing both the low points as well as the high. She provides advice every step of the way, making this lived experience book an indispensable companion for carers.

Proceeds will raise vital funds for Shawmind, a Newark-based mental health charity, which has previously campaigned to make mental health education compulsory in UK schools.

Setting up your garden for Summer Wendy Simpson of Craigievar Gardeners offers seasonal tips to help you get the best from your patch, large or small...

Right now most of us are surveying the frost damage to our gardens with dismay. Even comparatively hardy and wellestablished shrubs have suffered gravely from a drawn-out winter. No matter how bad things look, be patient. Resist the urge to prune out damaged areas until all risk of further frost has passed because pruning will encourage new growth, which will make the plant doubly susceptible to cold damage. Wait as long as you can, and remember that even plants pruned close to the ground can recover because the base of the plant and its roots are the areas least susceptible to injury from freezing.

Treat your lawn to a high-nitrogen feed using a combined weed- and moss-killing product and scarify if necessary. Reseed or turf any bare patches.

May is a good month to plant up tubs, hanging baskets and window boxes for colour that will last all summer. Feed containers every couple of weeks with a liquid fertilizer.

Prepare your borders for planting by weeding them thoroughly. Spread a thick layer of mulch over the soil to discourage regrowth and retain moisture.

Give your hedges a light trim but check for nesting birds first. Prune early-flowering shrubs like ribes and forsythia after they have flowered.

Wait until all risk of late frost has passed before you plant out dahlias and bedding plants. Harden off plants raised from seed in a cold frame for at least a week beforehand.

Plant out early sowings of kale, spinach and salad leaves. Earth up potatoes to prevent light reaching the tubers as they grow. Start sowings of vegetables like beetroot, cucumbers and sprouting

broccoli in a greenhouse.

Sow late flowerers such as cosmos, poppies, nicotiana, verbena bonariensis, cornflowers and zinnias in a greenhouse for later planting in gaps in borders.

Deadhead daffodils and tulips as they die back, but leave the foliage to wither naturally.

Insert supports for taller herbaceous plants, especially those with heavy blooms, such as peonies. Your supports will work better and will gradually disappear into the foliage if you get them in early.

Dust off your garden furniture and put your feet up!

Lumsden Calling...

Radio project featured talks and takeovers The Alford area was treated to a week of homegrown radio at the end of May as part of an exciting local community focused project.

Lumsden Live could be heard on 87.9 FM in Lumsden and online across the world.

It was the first international Assembly for the BEPART project, an international network across Europe. Bringing together communities in Aberdeenshire with the wider BEPART network, the radio schedule set out to explore how collective community action has and continues to make change happen at local, institutional and international levels.

The shows included discussions between activists and artists, meditations with the local landscape, artworks, interviews, Lumsden residents’ ‘take-overs’ and live discussion and debate with community groups and organisers.
