Welcome to Issue 21 of The BULLetin.

I’m not sure I have a favourite season.

There’s pros and cons to all four of them!

But perhaps Spring, with its daily extending light, signs of new life and increase in social events and interactions, comes close.

Maybe this year we will appreciate Spring more than usual, with everything that has passed since the last. We’ll also be glad to see the back of all that snow! Many of you may have felt you’ve been spring cleaning since the end of March 2020, and there’s nothing left to do. Sadly, this is not the case in my house...

In these pages, you can read all about Grampian Transport Museum’s plans to take some of their exhibits outside and into the future. There’s a new green-fingered column from Craigievar Gardeners, heaps of club news, and a feature on Donside Camera Club in the centre pages. Thanks to their Mark Walker for our dramatic cover pic: “Takeaway”.

Remember that community information is FREE to include in these pages, so if you have any news for the Summer edition, tell me about it by May 1st if you can.

Future transport fundraising boost for museum

An exhibition at Grampian Transport Museum, using the history of land transport to explore and explain the future beyond the fossil fuel burning internal combustion engine, has been given a major boost for 2021.

Launched for the 2019 season, ‘Probing the Future’ was created as a new venture harnessing current knowledge and future development plans from industry leaders such as BP, BMW, Tesla and Mapix, to explain to visitors the latest technology being used in the development of electric and autonomous vehicles. Housed in a specially created ‘walk through’ area on the museum’s mezzanine floor and made fully accessible with a newly installed wheelchair lift, this opportunity to look into the future of land transport has proven extremely popular and was shown to change perceptions of visitors towards electricity being the fuel source of their own cars in the future.

This ability to showcase future transport technology has taken a major step forward for the 2021 season with an exciting new exhibit gifted to the museum by Aberdeenshire Council. The North East has been at the forefront of trialling Hydrogen power in public transport through running a fleet of EU-funded prototype VanHool single deck buses in the City and Shire for the past five years. One of these mobile test bed vehicles, as run

by Stagecoach, will now be displayed at the museum to enable visitors to see how the future of clean air public transport is being developed.

Museum curator Mike Ward is very excited about the new exhibit: “The watchword of GTM is to always be ‘topical and relevant’ and the science behind the use of hydrogen for powering vehicles is fascinating and a story worth telling, especially as the global energy hub of the North East is playing a leading role in its development. The gas is passed through a ‘fuel cell’ to create electricity which is then used to drive one or more electric motors. The only exhaust emission is water and the vehicle is quiet and >>>

smooth, benefitting both local air quality and the overall climate. The emerging technology is quite complex so to have this opportunity to let our visitors understand it is a wonderful addition to our ‘Probing the Future’ exhibition, which is also helping to fulfil the museum’s important educational role by attracting visits from science students, teachers and schools.

A recent crowdfunding campaign by the museum has raised £12,000 to build a new outside hard standing display area at the rear of our building, with new access door and covered walkway, and also to create a ‘cinema style’ interpretation centre within the bus to explain the technology and to illustrate the local story.

Following the initial five-year trial with these Northern Ireland Wrightbus built single deck buses, the City of Aberdeen recently took delivery of the world’s first hydrogen powered double decker bus from the same company, again with EU funding, and is now set to run the world’s largest fleet of Hydrogen powered double decker buses, leading towards cleaner air in the city centre and meeting the city’s ‘net zero’ emissions target.

The new museum exhibit at Alford will offer a unique opportunity for visitors to understand exactly how this technology works, the benefits it brings and the North East’s leading role in developing it.

Golf Club keen to attract young players Great facility on our doorstep, writes Derek Ross and John Hinton We have a wonderful golf course and club at Alford and a dedicated team of PGA Level 1 Junior Coaches.

The club offers coaching and club membership at a nominal cost from nine years old. We also run school sessions in March to attract youngsters who might otherwise never get the opportunity to play (but not last year nor this, sadly).

We desperately want to get more kids involved in the game, especially girls who are very much under-represented.

Our welcoming clubhouse lies at the heart of the village and the golf course is cradled in the beautiful Howe of Alford.

Easy walking, level terrain takes the golfer through scenic, wooded and parkland surroundings with magnificent views of the surrounding hills.

We also welcome social members who have full access to all lounge and restaurant facilities, together with up to three guests. Our Social Committee arranges social events throughout the year including Themed Menu Evenings, Live Music, Tribute Nights, Party Nights, Bingo, Quiz League and weekly poker nights.

If you live in or near Alford there is a great facility on your doorstep just waiting to make a huge contribution to your leisure activities, with lots of life skills to be developed along the way.

Alford Car Transport Service (ACTS) is available to take people of any age to essential appointments at the hospital, GPs, optician, dentist, care homes and clinics, including Covid vaccinations.

Run by volunteers, the service is free but donations are appreciated if you can.

As well as providing meal supplies for up to 15 families a week, Alford Community Food Store also has a number of games and toys available from their lockdown library.

There is also an electronic keyboard, a baby walker, car seat and travel cot.

These items can be kept or loaned and returned, whichever method families feel fits their situation best.

As in the previous lockdown, all items are quarantined before being sent to new homes. Please note that the organsation is not currently accepting new library donations.

Railway Memories brought to life

Doric Film Festival has commissioned a short film about the Alford Valley Community Railway for its 2021 event.

Film-maker Fergus Cruickshank (www. fergusfilms.com) has been working with the Alford Valley Community Railway to bring memories to the screen.

The film is a celebration of the railway and the hopes of the Donside community for the railway’s future. The railway has been closed since 2017, and the railway’s committee are raising funds for necessary repairs for its eventual reopening, bringing joy to future visitors. The film will help to raise awareness for the Alford Valley Community Railway’s efforts to repair and re-open the railway.

The film started being shot in February with some aerial photography of the railway, and interviews with former railway staff have been carried out. Many nostalgic stories have been captured, and a memory capsule has been created.

Fergus is now working on the edit, with the film’s deadline approaching in May and the premiere happening at the Doric Film Festival later this year.

The Doric Film Festival commissions films that celebrate the Doric language.

The theme for the 2021 festival is ‘Jist far I bide’.

Donside Community Council continues to meet online during lockdown. We are all looking forward to being able to meet again in person when restrictions are lifted. As any of you relying on technology to keep in touch with friends and family or for work you will know that it always isn’t plain sailing.

There is a sense of treading water just now although many local projects are continuing, such as the fundraising for the Alford Valley Community Railway. When restrictions are lifted we will be looking at ways of helping our area ‘bounce back’.

Popular club has continued to thrive in lockdown, says general secretary Susie Beardwell Even if you’re not a photographer yourself, you may be aware of Donside Camera Club. Perhaps you have visited the Club’s Exhibitions or Christmas Fair both held in Alford Hall, or been aware of the Club’s meetings in the hall every Thursday evening in “normal” circumstances.

However, in these Covid times, sadly none of these events have been possible but that certainly doesn’t mean that the Club has been furloughed, far from it! The Club has risen to the challenges and not only survived but is thriving, a tribute to the hard work and commitment of its members and their passion for photography.

Meetings are still held every Thursday at 7.30pm on Zoom and we’ve enjoyed a full, varied, instructive and entertaining programme of events. We’ve had presentations from guest speakers such as Kim Grant and Margaret Soraya; continued with our monthly internal competitions for both colour and mono images, always judged by an external judge; entered some of the major National competitions such as Scottish Photographic Federation (SPF) and enjoyed liaisons with other Clubs such as the annual image exchange with Orkney Camera Club - all this via Zoom! And who can forget our hilarious Christmas Quiz?

During Covid it has been especially important to encourage and motivate members to keep taking photographs. One of the beauties of photography as a hobby

is that it can be done any time of day or night, indoors or outdoors. It is a myth that you must have a “proper” camera to take good photographs; a popular saying in the photography world is that “the best camera is the one you have with you” so many members are taking excellent images on phone cameras for example.

To encourage continued photography, the Club runs a weekly challenge topic on Facebook, judged by the other members on a rudimentary but effective system of “likes”. Visit the Club’s Facebook page to see what we’re up to.

Donside Camera Club is proud of the friendly, warm welcome it offers all new members of whatever standard of photography; total beginners are welcomed and guided while more proficient photographers will find many of a similar standard within the Club’s membership. Whilst it seems that Zoom will be the way forward for the Club for a while yet, the firm intention is to return to Alford Hall when conditions permit.

In a new column, Wendy Simpson of Craigievar Gardeners offers seasonal tips to help you get the best from your patch, large or small...

What to do in your garden for spring...

First things first! Spring-clean your garden before your bulbs come up. Clear borders of winter debris, leaves and last year’s perennial foliage. Repair retaining walls and stepping stones. Fix and reseal wooden trellises, raised beds and planters.

As your bulbs emerge, feed the soil with an inch or two of compost.

Early spring represents pruning time for shrubs that will flower on new wood (this year’s growth), such as buddleias and potentillas. Do this when you’re sure that heavy frosts have passed. Hard-prune hybrid tea and floribunda roses by cutting back to outward-facing buds. Don’t prune early flowerers or shrubs that flower on last year’s growth: leave the pruning of shrubs like weigelas, forsythias, lilacs and azaleas until after they’ve finished flowering.

If you have perennials that are large enough to split, you can divide those that flower in summer and early autumn. Don’t split any that bloom in spring – leave that until autumn.

Depending on the weather, you can start sowing in mid-April, especially in a polytunnel. Plant early potatoes, onion sets and asparagus, and sow spinach, kale, salad leaves and early carrots in trays for later planting out. Later, outdoors, sow perennials and hardy annuals and plant lily bulbs.

Rake out the moss thatch in your lawn and set your mower blades high for the first few cuts. Next stop: summer!
