Dear Friends,
As Mother Earth awakens across downtown Oklahoma City, there is a renewed sense of energy and anticipation blooming at Myriad Botanical Gardens. Spring has always been a season of possibility here, and this year feels especially meaningful. From the vibrant colors of Tulip Fest to the final stages of our new Strategic Plan, there is momentum all around us.
Over the last six months, we have engaged hundreds of community members to help shape our next five years. Many of you completed surveys, attended workshops, or participated in focus groups. Your insights, ideas, and aspirations are guiding us as we refine a plan that will unite our teams and provide strategic direction for programming, horticulture, education, events, and operations. We look forward to sharing this new chapter with you in the months ahead.
Spring also marks the beginning of our most dynamic season of programming. Nearly 100,000 tulips across the Gardens and our partners at Scissortail Park have transformed downtown into a living canvas of color. Beloved traditions like Flower & Garden Festival, Plant a Prairie, and Splendor in the Gardens invite our community to gather, learn, and celebrate. Summer Movies on the lawn will once again bring families together under the stars, while wellness classes, guided tours, and hands-on workshops ensure there is something for every age and interest.
Inside the iconic Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory, seasonal displays and educational programming continue to inspire curiosity and connection to the natural world. Whether you are attending a class, volunteering at a festival, becoming a member, or simply enjoying a quiet walk among the blooms, you are part of what makes this place special.
The Gardens exist because of you — your membership, your philanthropy, your partnership, and your presence. Together, we are cultivating more than beautiful landscapes; we are nurturing a shared civic space that enhances the vibrancy and quality of life in the heart of our city.
There is truly never a dull moment this season. I invite you to visit often, follow along on our social channels, and experience all that is blooming.
With gratitude and excitement for the season ahead,

In January 2026, the lush beauty of the Myriad Botanical Gardens provided the perfect setting to celebrate a man whose vision helped shape both the Gardens and the city surrounding them. Community leaders, supporters, and friends gathered to honor Mr. James R. “Jim” Tolbert III as the inaugural recipient of the reimagined Crystal Orchid Award.
Originally established in 2002 as the Orchids in October Award, the recognition was thoughtfully reintroduced in 2026 to align with the Gardens’ annual Orchid Show, Love Takes Root: An Orchid Engagement, which was on display January 16 through March 1. The award’s history made this year’s honoree especially meaningful. When the Orchids in October Awards began more than two decades ago, the very first recipient was Jim Tolbert himself. As the event entered a new era, it felt only fitting to once again recognize the man whose legacy was so deeply intertwined with the Gardens’ story.
Known affectionately by many as the “Godfather of the Myriad Gardens,” Mr. Tolbert’s involvement dates back to the early 1960s. His vision, leadership, and steadfast commitment helped transform the Gardens into the vibrant cultural and horticultural destination it is today. Generations of Oklahoma City residents and visitors alike benefit from the urban oasis in the heart of downtown, a place where community, beauty, and civic pride have flourished.
Mr. Tolbert’s impact extends well beyond the Gardens’ gates. His civic leadership has strengthened Oklahoma City through meaningful work with the Dean McGee Eye Institute, the Bricktown district, the Arts Council Oklahoma City, and numerous other community initiatives. His dedication to service has helped shape a city that has continued to grow in vitality and vision.
The Crystal Orchid Award began its new chapter rooted in tradition while looking confidently toward the future. January’s celebration was more than an awards luncheon; it was a heartfelt tribute to a true Oklahoma City icon and a powerful reminder of the lasting impact one individual’s leadership could have on an entire community.

Honoring the Journey. Investing in the Next Chapter.
May 14, 2026
• Devon Lawn • Myriad Botanical Gardens
Every other year, the Myriad Botanical Gardens transforms into the city’s most enchanting dining room for Splendor in the Gardens, an unforgettable evening in support of the Myriad Gardens Foundation. On May 14, 2026, guests will gather beneath the open sky on the Devon Lawn for a celebration inspired by the enduring spirit of Route 66 and Oklahoma City’s vibrant history along the famed Mother Road.
Set against a backdrop of twinkling lights and sweeping garden views, this year’s event pays tribute to the stories, culture, and community that Route 66 helped shape over the last 100 years, honoring the journey while investing in the future of one of Oklahoma City’s most treasured green spaces.
The evening will feature a thoughtfully curated farm-totable dinner, highlighting the best of local and seasonal

ingredients. Guests will enjoy communal seating, encouraging connection, conversation, and a shared sense of purpose. Live entertainment will carry the nostalgic rhythm of Route 66, blending vintage charm with contemporary energy.
More than a dinner, Splendor in the Gardens is a celebration of place, of the roads that brought us here and the gardens that bring us together. Proceeds from the evening directly support the Myriad Gardens Foundation’s mission to preserve, enhance, and sustain this urban oasis for generations to come.

On any given day, you’ll find Gail Boyce greeting guests with a warm smile behind the counter at the Myriad Gift Shop inside the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory. But her journey to becoming a staff member with Park Management Company is one rooted in resilience, renewal, and community.
Gail moved to Oklahoma City following devastating life circumstances, hoping for a fresh start and a chance to rediscover herself.
Determined to connect in her new city, she attended the annual “First Day Walk” at Scissortail Park, a community walk held every January 1 to welcome the new year with purpose and positivity.
That single walk marked the beginning of something much bigger.
Soon after, Gail began exploring volunteer opportunities at both Myriad Gardens and Scissortail Park. Her introduction to volunteering came through Pumpkinville, one of the Gardens’ signature fall events. From there, she immersed herself in volunteer meetings and eagerly stepped into nearly every opportunity available to support festivals, farmers markets, horticultural activities, and special events.
“There are a lot of reasons I continued to volunteer,” Gail shared. “When I first came
to the city, it was hard to imagine myself in a better headspace. But once I realized I could assist with events and be part of something meaningful, I started to feel joy again. I was making friends and spending my time in a way that felt good.”
Volunteering not only connected Gail to a new community, but it also helped her create lasting memories with her family. After the birth of her grandson, she wanted him to experience the Gardens and Park the same way she had. She discovered that by completing a certain number of volunteer hours, she could earn a discount on membership. Through her service, she became a member, which opened the door to countless shared experiences.
“There are so many family-oriented events at both properties,” she said. “I love feeling like I’m part of something bigger. I wanted my grandson to grow up attending all the fun and exciting things happening here.”
From seasonal celebrations to hands-on activities, Gail and her grandson have made the most of their membership, especially at the boathouse in Scissortail Park, where kayaking and paddle boating are favorite pastimes and a fun member perk.
Her dedication did not go unnoticed. After years of generously giving her time, Gail was invited to join the team in a professional capacity. She began working

in various roles at Scissortail Park before transitioning to her current position in the Myriad Gardens Shop inside the Crystal Bridge. What started as a personal journey toward healing evolved into a meaningful career rooted in service and connection.
“I really found my community through the Gardens and Park,” Gail said. “It’s been such a fun journey.”

While Gail didn’t originally start the walking club that meets every Thursday and Sunday at Scissortail Park, she has since taken the lead with enthusiasm. The familiar faces and shared miles have become yet another reminder of the strong sense of belonging she helped cultivate and continues to nurture each week.

Each spring, a vibrant wave of color sweeps across downtown Oklahoma City as more than 60,000 tulips burst into bloom at Myriad Botanical Gardens. Now in its fourth year, the beloved Tulip Festival grows even bigger, expanding to a full week from March 28 through April 5, giving guests more time to experience one of the city’s most anticipated seasonal traditions.
Just a couple of blocks away, another 40,000 tulips blossom at our sister organization, Scissortail Park, creating an extraordinary floral display that stretches across downtown. Together, the downtown green spaces showcase nearly 100,000 tulips in a dazzling spectrum of spring color.
Downtown OKC Partnership reported that Tulip Festival weekend in 2025 was the second-busiest weekend in downtown Oklahoma City, surpassed only by the OKC Thunder Champions Parade. According to Placer.ai mobile location data, more than 33,000 visits were recorded at the Myriad Botanical Gardens during the 2025 Tulip Festival weekend, highlighting the event’s impact as both a cultural attraction and economic driver for the city.
Throughout the entire run of the festival, guests can enjoy immersive experiences both outdoors and inside the iconic Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory.
Making its debut this year, this educational exhibit from The Netherlands traces the flower’s remarkable story across four engaging chapters:
• Tulip Botanics and Cultivation
• Ancient Origins
• The Rise of Tulip Culture
• Arrival in the Netherlands
Installed within the Gardens and inside the Crystal Bridge, the exhibit invites visitors to follow the tulip’s path from the mountains of Central Asia to the gardens of Europe, where it ignited global fascination and even economic frenzy.

Local artists will showcase tulip-inspired works in the Crystal Bridge South Lobby for the full duration of the festival, adding a creative layer to the celebration and highlighting Oklahoma’s vibrant arts community.
While tulips and exhibits can be enjoyed all week long, Saturdays and Sundays from 9AM to 6PM bring additional energy to Tulip Festival. Guests can browse an expansive vendor market, enjoy live music performances, and sample offerings from a rotating lineup of local food trucks.
Curbside Flowers will also be on-site each weekend, selling fresh-cut tulips and exclusive Tulip Festival merchandise, giving visitors the opportunity to take a piece of the celebration home.
A charming Dutch-style windmill installation inside the Crystal Bridge provides the perfect backdrop for spring photos and family snapshots.

This year’s extended schedule also creates unique weekday experiences.
On Tuesday, March 31, downtown employees and visitors are invited to enjoy Tulip Tuesday and enjoy lunch among the tulips from 11AM to 1PM. Food trucks will line Sheridan Avenue, and picnic tables will be arranged across the Sheridan Lawn, offering a refreshing outdoor lunch break surrounded by spring color.
Celebrate spring in style during Holland Happy Hour at Myriad Botanical Gardens on Thursday, April 2, from 5:30 to 8PM.
As part of Tulip Festival week, this delightful evening invites guests to unwind among thousands of colorful blooms and experience the beauty of the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory after hours.
Your ticket includes admission to the Crystal Bridge and your choice of beer, wine, or a signature cocktail inspired by the festival’s Dutch theme. Enjoy our Tulip Mania art exhibit in the Visitor Lobby, stroll through the conservatory, take photos by the windmill display, and admire the vibrant tulip displays throughout the Gardens as the sun sets over downtown.
Tickets are $25, or $20 for Myriad Gardens members. Bring friends, sip something refreshing, and toast to spring during this relaxed evening celebration in the heart of the city.
Tulip Festival is made possible through the generous support of Devon Energy, E.L. & Thelma Gaylord Foundation, Jil and Tony Boghetich, Renewal by Andersen, Tinker Federal Credit Union, Arts Council Arts Move, Walker Companies, and Midtown Renaissance.

The beloved weekly tradition returns this year with six evenings of free, familyfriendly films shown under the stars every Wednesday from May 27 through July 1. Presented by Oklahoma’s Credit Union, the series invites moviegoers of all ages to gather in the heart of the city for a relaxed night of community, nostalgia, and bigscreen adventure.
The season opens with a special tribute to the centennial anniversary of Route 66 and the 20-year anniversary of the Pixar classic Cars. The animated hit was inspired by a real-life road trip along the legendary highway, which shaped the story, setting, and characters. Director John Lasseter and his creative team drew inspiration from the small towns, diners, and neon signs along the route to create the fictional town of Radiator Springs.
Following opening night, the lineup continues with a mix of nostalgic favorites and exciting new releases. Families can relive the treasure-hunting adventure of

The Goonies, soar with dragons in How to Train Your Dragon, enjoy the magic of Broadway-inspired storytelling with Wicked: For Good, follow the journey of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and feel like you are part of the game with the Minecraft Movie Each screening offers a chance for a new generation to experience beloved stories while longtime fans rediscover them in a lively outdoor setting.
As twilight settles over downtown, the lawn fills with laughter, picnic baskets, and the glow of anticipation as the screen lights up. For many Oklahoma City families, Summer Movies at the Gardens has become a seasonal tradition.
With free admission and a lineup designed to delight audiences of all ages, Oklahoma’s Credit Union Summer Movies continues to prove that some of the best movie theaters don’t have walls, just open skies, good company, and a great story waiting to begin.
For more information, visit myriadgardens.org/calendar.

Did you know that Oklahoma helped inspire Cars? When Pixar director John Lasseter and his team traveled Route 66 to research the film, they made several stops in the Sooner State. Highlights included:
Rock Café in Stroud – The historic diner and its owner, Dawn Welch, inspired the character Sally Carrera.
Clinton Route 66 Museum – A treasure trove of memorabilia capturing the charm of small-town America.
Quirky roadside attractions – From neon signs to local shops, Oklahoma’s towns helped shape the look and feel of Radiator Springs.
Next time you watch Cars, remember: a little piece of Oklahoma is on the big screen!

Nature journaling is a simple yet powerful practice that invites students to slow down, observe closely, and build a meaningful relationship with the natural world. Whether used in schools or at home, it blends science, literacy, art, and social-emotional learning into one rich, reflective activity.
At its core, nature journaling is about paying attention. Students record what they see, hear, and feel through drawings, written observations, labeled diagrams, poetry, or data tables. Journaling encourages curiosity and careful observation. When students sketch a leaf or document the behavior of birds, they are practicing the same habits of mind used by professional scientists: noticing patterns, asking questions, and forming hypotheses.

Kaitlin Bacon, Director of Education

In schools, nature journaling supports academic growth across subjects. In science, it strengthens skills in observation, classification, and data collection. In language arts, students expand vocabulary and descriptive writing abilities. Math can be integrated through measuring plant growth or tracking weather patterns. Even art becomes part of the process as students experiment with drawing techniques and visual representation. Because nature journaling is adaptable for all ages, it can be differentiated to meet diverse learning needs.
Beyond academics, nature journaling nurtures emotional well-being. Time spent outdoors has been shown to reduce stress and improve focus. Getting outdoors with an investigative mindset encourages child-led exploration in natural settings, highlighting how outdoor experiences build resilience and confidence. When students sit quietly and observe their surroundings, they practice mindfulness. This pause from screens and structured schedules allows them to feel grounded and present.
Nature journaling is equally valuable at home. Families can explore backyards, local parks, or neighborhood sidewalks. Seasonal changes become opportunities for discovery. A simple notebook can transform a routine walk into a shared adventure of noticing and wondering. Parents often find that journaling sparks meaningful conversations and encourages children to ask deeper questions about the world around them.
Perhaps most importantly, nature journaling cultivates stewardship. When students develop personal connections to the natural world, they are more likely to care about protecting it. Over time, those small sketches and reflections become a record of growth -- not only of their local plants and wildlife, but of the student’s own curiosity and awareness.
In an increasingly fast-paced and technology-driven world, nature journaling encourages us to observe, reflect, and reconnect while supporting learning, well-being, and a lifelong appreciation for nature.

Summer road trip season is the perfect time to explore somewhere new— and for members of Myriad Botanical Gardens, a garden membership can open far more doors than you might realize. Through the American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP), Myriad Gardens members gain free or reduced admission to nearly 400 botanical gardens, arboreta, and conservatories across North America.
Think of it as a passport to some of the most beautiful landscapes on the continent.
The program connects a network of public gardens that share a mission of promoting horticulture, conservation, and education. When visiting a participating garden, members simply present their current membership card to enjoy benefits that often include complimentary general admission or special discounts.
While individual policies vary, especially for ticketed festivals, special exhibits, or gardens located within 90 miles of your home garden, the program makes it easier and more affordable to add a botanical stop to any vacation or weekend getaway.
With the upcoming centennial of the historic Route 66 corridor, the RAP program offers a unique way to celebrate the Mother Road. Several participating botanical destinations lie along or near the iconic route, making them perfect stops for travelers looking to mix natural beauty with nostalgia.
Gardens along historic Route 66 to consider visiting include:
Tulsa Botanic Garden — Tulsa, Oklahoma
Amarillo Botanical Gardens — Amarillo, Texas
Missouri Botanical Garden — St. Louis, Missouri
Albuquerque BioPark Botanic Garden — Albuquerque, New Mexico
Santa Fe Botanical Garden — Santa Fe, New Mexico
Desert Botanical Garden — Phoenix, Arizona
Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden — Arcadia, California
Each garden reflects the climate and culture of its region, from desert landscapes and native prairie plantings to historic estates and tropical conservatories. For travelers tracing Route 66, they provide scenic places to stretch your legs, discover regional plants, and experience local horticulture.
Before visiting, it’s wise to check each garden’s website or call ahead. Reciprocal benefits typically apply during regular hours but may not include special events, seasonal festivals, or ticketed exhibits.
Still, with hundreds of destinations across the United States, Canada, and beyond, the Reciprocal Admissions Program turns a single garden membership into a gateway to extraordinary places.
For Myriad Gardens members planning summer travel, it’s one more reason to pack your membership card alongside your suitcase. Whether you’re heading down Route 66 or exploring somewhere entirely new, a world of gardens awaits.
