Explore Black history and culture in Oklahoma from Tulsa’s Black Wall Street of the 1920’s to the vibrancy and diversity of today through the works of several unique Black artists.

Terrace Room M $35; NM $40 Instructor: Morgan Atteberry, Horticulturist Learn about the benefits and practice of infusing honey with herbs to create myriad combinations for enhanced flavor and health benefits. Guests will go home with recipes to test, strategy for experimentation, and their own pint of infused honey created together during the class.

MLK JR. DAY CELEBRATION Park House & Crystal Bridge

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Gardens with a morning of live performances, crafts with local Black artists, and speakers who will feature their work in honor of Dr. King’s historic message. After the event, head over to Walker Avenue and watch the MLK Jr. Day Parade, beginning at 2pm. MONDAY, JANUARY 17, 12-1PM

Create your own canvas painting of Martin Luther King Jr. with Tulsa artist Eddye K. She will walk you through techniques and skills to improve your brushwork skills using an outlined of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. on the canvas.

The Gardens is seeking volunteers for an active 2022. Volunteers can assist with horticulture, classes, or signature events like the Children’s Garden Festival and Pumpkinville. Groundhogs might get the day, but this party’s for our very own Prairie Dog. We’re going to learn all about Oklahoma’s keystone species, the Blacktailed prairie dog, and everything it does to keep our grasslands healthy. We’ll enjoy special prairie dog themed treats, make crafts, and play games. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 10-11AM

NATURE MUSIC MAPS Children’s Garden Porch M $5; NM $7 Best for Ages 7 – 11

Music is everywhere in nature; you can find it in the song of a bird, the wind whistling through tree branches and through the crunching of leaves and twigs underfoot. Join us as we learn about the components of a song and how to “collect sounds” in our nature journals by sketching symbols that remind us of the things we hear. Compose your very own musical masterpiece after a walk through the Children’s Garden.

GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT: KICKOFF! Children’s Garden Porch Walkup, Donation Accepted All Ages Welcome

Help us kick off the Great Backyard Bird Count with activities specially suited for celebrating our favorite feathered friends. We will make bird feeders, practice our bird calls, read stories, and more to get us ready for citizen science fun. Pick up one of our journal logs and join us on the following Saturday, February 19 for our official count at the Gardens. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1–2PM

GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT AT THE GARDENS Terrace Room & Garden Grounds M $5; NM $7 Best for Ages 6 – 12

Join us as we spend an afternoon learning all about the birds of Oklahoma City and adding our mark to the Great Backyard Bird Count, a citizen science project that spans the entire globe. We will learn about the birds we will expect to find, go out on a hunt to look and listen for them, record our findings, and submit them to the official Project database. When our count is over, we’ll celebrate our hard work with the official titles we will have earned of Citizen Scientists.

Starting your garden from seed provides many benefits from cost savings to extending your growing season. Seed sharing can bring gardeners in the community together and allow you to try new plants for a fraction of the cost of buying individual starter plants. This class provides you with both the knowledge and opportunity to start your own collection of seeds to take home for planting and sharing. Leave with both planted and unplanted seeds. Pairs well with our Raised Bed Gardening class on February 5.

From home gardens to schoolyards, raised beds are a great way to grow year-round crops and flowers by providing elevation to lessen compaction, easier weed control, and extended growing seasons. Come learn strategies, benefits, layouts, and more to get a head start on your Spring gardening adventures. Pairs well with our Seed Starting class on February 19.

We’re off for a morning of tea with the fairies. Don your wings and join us for an hour of song, stories, and crafts to reconnect us with nature’s little helpers. Learn about and enjoy a fairy’s favorite teas, the plants that make them, and snacks before we fly off and spread a little spring joy and fairy dust.

Macramé is an extremely versatile fiber art using knots that fits itself anywhere on the spectrum of complexity and practical usage. Join us in learning strategies and examples of macramé work in several different forms before creating, step by step, your very own plant hanger using cotton cord and creative knotting. Look around and what do you see? Spring is almost here. Let’s send winter off with a warm farewell and lots of fun as we celebrate the coming of the spring season. We will dive into the science of the seasons with a story time and demonstration before we go on a nature hike throughout the Children’s Garden. We will conduct a springtime experiment and finish by making natural suncatchers to help us enjoy the season even more.

BOTANICAL EMBROIDERY: SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Terrace Room M $35; NM $40 Chelsey Shimanek, Chirping Chickadee Embroidery Spring is here! Celebrate the beginning of the season by creating your own botanically-inspired piece of hand embroidery. You will be guided through essential stitches as you practice making your own sampler, leaving with a completed piece. Tools, basic stitches, pattern transfer, and finishing techniques will all be covered.

Hypertufa is a unique, porous material made up of Portland cement, peat moss, and a filler that, once mixed, can be molded into virtually limitless shapes and sizes to complement and display rock gardens, succulents, and more. Join us as we learn and execute the process of making our own hypertufa planters for the coming spring. All supplies included, will require curing time post-class.

GO GREEN IN THE GARDENS: ST. PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATION Devon Lawn

Join us for Go Green in the Gardens, a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the heart of Oklahoma City. Enjoy delicious eats from your favorite Irish food vendors and hear music by some of Oklahoma’s best Irish bands. Face painters will be onsite for the kids and Irish clubs will provide instructional dancing to those who are ready to get into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit.

We look forward to an exciting 2022 as we approach our next chapter with the grand opening of the completely renovated Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory.
