DEAR MEMBERS & GARDENS FRIENDS
Ayoung child was overhead telling her mother as they were walking by a border of blooming tulips at the Gardens last week, “Mommy, these can’t be real, they are too beautiful.” Best compliment ever.
Our cooler spring helped our stunning spring bulb display remain brilliant for an extended period this year. Seeing all ages marvel and be mesmerized by the abundant and exuberant colors is an immeasurable delight to us, especially to our horticultural staff, who works hard to create these magical carpets of blooms that transport us to a seemingly unreal place that dazzles and sings.
I want to tell the little girl’s mother to bring her back when the Prairie Garden’s liatris, and cone flowers and asters bloom; bring her back when the Mexican Feather grass on the lake slopes are green and blowing in the breeze; bring her back when the Magnolia tree blooms; bring her back to see thousands of pumpkins in the fall; bring her to see the orchids in the conservatory. Getting all ages hooked on the beauty and fascination of plants and gardening is our core mission at Myriad Gardens.
A new garden area to enjoy this season is our Reflection Garden made possible by major support from Glenna and Richard Tanenbaum, with additional help from Margaret Annis Boys Trust and the City of Oklahoma City Water Conservation Program. Located on the north side of the pedestrian bridge, this shady site now features a stone terrace with a bench, low curving stone walls and a calming stone water fountain. Planted with shade and drought tolerant plants, it’s a perfect spot to eat lunch, read a book, meet friends or simply relax, enjoy the views and listen to the birds and softly flowing water.
Called the Reflection Garden, as overhead tree branches are reflected in the water feature when the sunlight hits it at certain times of the day, it also provides a tranquil retreat for personal reflection and repose, much needed in our hectic and screen-filled lives.
We also want to thank the Thunderbird Pioneers of Oklahoma City whose donation enabled us to install new accessible play equipment in the Children’s Garden. See page 10 for details. Now, any child can know the fun of spinning, swinging and see sawing at Myriad Gardens.
Please plan to visit the Gardens soon to see how we keep growing.
Thank you for your support of the Gardens.

Splendor in the Gardens Returns Thursday, May 17
Biannual Farm-to-Table Gala Benefits Myriad Botanical Gardens
The magical farm-to-table gala dinner known as Splendor in the Gardens returns for its fourth rendition on Thursday, May 17. Co-chaired by Chris Fleming and Kathy L. Williams, the biannual gala takes place on the Great Lawn of Myriad Botanical Gardens.
Limited to 400 guests, the evening begins with a reception at the Park House Event Center. As the sun sets against the backdrop of the downtown Oklahoma City skyline, guests stroll through the Gardens to the Great Lawn where they will dine al fresco on a feast inspired by the south of France.
Prepared and served by a variety of metro area chefs including Alain Buthion of La Baguette, Kamala Gamble and Barbara Mock with Kam’s Kookery, Allison Dake with Brown Egg Bakery and bread baked by Esca Vitae in Midtown, the menu will feature the fresh foods and herbs de Provence. Wines will be provided by Joullian Vineyards & Winery. Also, guests will enjoy reception appetizers created by David Henri of The Hutch, Melissa Aust and Lori Burson of Stella, Robby Vernon of Hacienda Tacos, and Ethan Williams of McClintock Saloon.
As in years past, proceeds from this event will help fund a matching grant from the Robert Glenn Rapp Foundation to endow the Gardens’ annual spring bulb display. When this match is realized, the
Gardens will have an endowed fund guaranteeing a dazzling display of spring bulbs in perpetuity.
Gala funds also help sustain the Myriad Gardens’ existing programs, educational events and more. This fall the Gardens becomes the first in the nation to host a school on its grounds as we welcome the 6th grade of John Rex Elementary School into renovated space in the lower part of the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory.
This event sold out quickly in past years and a sell-out in 2018 is anticipated. For sponsorship and ticket information contact Susan Grossman, director of development, at (405) 445-7090 or email sgrossman@myriadgardens.org

Newly created Reflection Garden offers tranquil and contemplative space in the Gardens
Visitors strolling the grounds of Myriad Botanical Gardens will be treated to a re-designed space where they can pause and perhaps spend a few quiet moments in the middle of the city. Made possible by a major donation from long-time Gardens supporters Glenna and Richard Tanenbaum, the Reflection Garden is located on the north side of the pedestrian bridge.
This shady spot was transformed by the design of Seattlebased landscape architect Scott Murase and features a stone terrace, low curving stone walls, a hand-crafted stone water feature and matching stone bench. Murase’s work is evident in other parts of the Gardens including the Prairie Garden. Complimenting the stone features are hearty, drought tolerant plants and shrubs that grow well in shade.
As downtown residents, the Tanenbaums are frequent visitors to the Gardens where they enjoy walks with their dog, Sammy. When invited to help us transition this area of the Gardens from a place where plants struggled to grow under a considerable tree canopy into an appealing place for quiet contemplation, they did not hesitate.
“Glenna and Richard Tanenbaum are among our biggest champions,” said Maureen Heffernan, Gardens executive director. “They understand the importance of this beautiful space to the health and well-being of downtown Oklahoma City. When we ask, the Tanenbaums are always willing to help.”
Additional funding for the Reflection Garden was provided by the Margaret Annis Boys Trust which is administered by the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, and the City of Oklahoma City Water Conservation Program.
Although it is called the Reflection Garden, the Hebrew phrase tikkun olam (tee-KOON oh-LUHM) will be prominently featured in the garden. This phrase translates into “repairing the world” and was chosen to honor the generosity of the Tanenbaums which has helped us to enhance this area at the Gardens. Plans are underway to formally dedicate the new garden later this summer.
Progress on Scissortail Park Continues
Scissortail Park is making a great progress! The park is a project of MAPS 3, a capital improvements program in Oklahoma City that uses a one-cent, limited-term sales tax to pay for debt-free projects that improve the citizens of Oklahoma City’s quality of life.
To date: the play pavilion and the adjacent playground and the boathouse are under construction and well underway. The stage, cafe and shade pavilions are also under construction and taking shape. The pedestrian bridge and lake walls are in place. The Lens garden landforms are almost complete and the irrigation is being installed at the Oval lawn.
Staplegun, a full-service agency in Oklahoma City, has been selected to do the branding work. Look for a new logo to be unveiled soon.
Scissortail Park facts:
• The Upper Park is 36 acres and the Lower Park is 34 acres for a total of 70 acres.
• Cost to build Scissortail Park is $132 million. The money has already been collected, which makes the park completely paid for with no debt.
• Ground was broken on the upper park in 2017 and is expected to open in summer of 2019. Breaking ground on the lower park is expected to happen in 2020.
• More than 1,000 trees will be planted in the upper park. The trees include a variety of species including redbud, shumard oak, blackjack oak, maple and more that are all native to Oklahoma.
The boathouse is really taking shape! On the left is the current construction phase. On the right is the rendering. The Boathouse includes a covered outdoor seating and gathering area, public bathrooms, three sliding service windows and staff work and storage areas. The program includes boat rental and the sale of pre-packaged snacks and beverages. (Construction photo by MAPS 3).

Gardens pleased to serve as initial location for John Rex Middle School
The sounds of children playing in Myriad Botanical Gardens is a common one in downtown Oklahoma City. In 2018 we will welcome even more children as John Rex Charter School expands into renovated space in the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. To help make this innovative idea happen, the Inasmuch Foundation committed to a capital improvement grant of up to $700,000 for enhancements to our existing educational spaces for the incoming sixth grade class.
Renovation of lower-level classrooms located in the Dean A. McGee Center will provide students with a multitude of extended science and outdoor learning experiences beyond the classroom walls. This one-of-a-kind opportunity provides students a multitude of enriching activities hosted by our professional Gardens staff. In addition, hosting a middle school on the grounds continues to fulfill our mission of promoting the highest of horticultural educational standards and best practices.
Maureen Heffernan, executive director of Myriad Botanical Gardens, said she is delighted to open up space at the Crystal Bridge to help John Rex students continue their downtown schooling.
“Going to school at a botanical garden will provide students with uniquely beautiful and enriching indoor and outdoor learning
spaces,” she said. “We look forward to a fruitful partnership with John Rex School and the wonderful energy the children will bring to the Gardens.”
The opportunity provided to host John Rex Middle School at the Gardens benefits plans for renovation and expansion of the existing Crystal Bridge including improvements to the South Lobby. These spaces will offer exciting and new educational experiences for visitors to the Gardens in the years to come.
The sixth grade will have approximately 80 spots. The John Rex board anticipates adding a seventh grade at the Gardens in 2019, with plans for eighth grade under review.
Construction for the school spaces will be completed by mid July.
Gardens Receive Grant from Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust
By Nate Tschaenn, Director of Horticulture
Thanks to a generous grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust the Gardens is making exciting improvements to the Color Curve garden, located south of the Great Lawn.
The biggest change comes with the recent expansion of the largest planting bed on the farthest east side of the garden. A few small paths and planting beds were removed to extend this flower bed and the rectangular blocks of ornamental grass and aggressive groundcovers were removed to make way for an improved mixed border design.
The wide variety of perennials, annuals and shrubs planted there this spring will not only be arranged in a visually appealing mix of colors, textures and forms but will also be Oklahoma tough and well-suited for our extreme weather.
In addition to the new mixed border display, we are creating new interpretive panels with information about plant selection, cultivars and landscape design and adding new plants throughout the Color Curve with an emphasis on excellent plant combinations and, of course, color.
Last year’s John Rex Elementary School 5th grade made a field trip to the Gardens to get an idea of the space.
A wide variety of perennials, annuals and shrubs were planted in the location seen in this photo this spring that will not only be arranged in a visually appealing mix of colors, textures and forms but will also be Oklahoma tough.

Thunderbird Telecom Pioneers make play possible for all children in the Gardens
The adage of one door closing while another one opens could easily apply to the arrival of new play equipment in the Children’s Garden. When a group of telecom retirees from Oklahoma City Works, the former Western Electric/ AT&T/Lucent telephone manufacturing facility, wanted to donate funds as a legacy to their volunteer organization, they turned to Myriad Gardens Foundation for ideas.
At the time, the group, known as the Thunderbird Telecom Pioneers, was seeking a project within the currently underconstruction Scissortail Park when they met with Myriad Gardens Executive Director Maureen Heffernan. She presented them with an opportunity to create an area within the Children’s Garden that was immediate: adaptive playground equipment where all children could play regardless of their physical abilities. As a result, the Thunderbirds provided funding to purchase a swing, a see-saw and a merry-go-round last fall, all designed for children with special needs.
The Pioneers have a long history of community service. Originally organized in 1911 with Alexander Graham Bell as its first member, the Pioneers are a national organization of volunteers who have donated their time, energy and talents to create and provide services, facilities, and innovative contributions for special needs of their respective communities. With the motto, “United we serve,” the Pioneers remain the world’s largest single industry volunteer organization.
The Thunderbird Pioneers is a nonprofit charitable organization that was organized in 1978 as the Oklahoma City Telephone Pioneer Council. The name Thunderbird was adopted in 1995 when AT&T split up the Bell System, separating telephone companies from the manufacturing and supply side of the telephone business. During the 43 years of manufacturing in Oklahoma City, more than 25,000 people were employed and eligible to become Pioneers.
They have used their time and resources for a broad range of projects from renovating apartments for homeless families, building handicap access ramps at residences, to sending packages to servicemen in the Middle East, producing huga-bears to sooth child victims of earthquakes in California, planting trees in parks and in areas devastated by tornadoes, and upgrading and donating computers to schools.
On December 7, 2017, Pioneers presented Myriad Gardens Foundation with a check for $75,000 to purchase and install the playground equipment. The Foundation coordinated the installation and operation of this new feature for the Children’s Garden.
“When telephone equipment manufacturing ceased at Oklahoma City in 2003, the Thunderbird Pioneers lost their source of new membership,” said Lonnie Austin, president of the Oklahoma City group. “So, the Pioneers began to search for ways to phase out operations and leave behind some legacy projects. We are happy to provide this first-of-its kind play equipment for children in Oklahoma City.”
Front row left side, Jan Brady, Janet Esser, Lonnie Austin, right side, Sylvia Bartemy, Shirley Pigg. Back row: Dave Bartemy, Dan Pigg, Virginia Treadway, Maureen Heffernan, Roy Taylor, Bill Reisman, Gary Tarkington.
The We-saw™ (in its installation phase) is a new take on the traditional seesaw. Its unique design and gentle rocking motion invites kids and families of all ages and abilities to participate in the fun.
The AbilityWhirl (in its installation phase) has changed public open spaces by making them accessible to children of all abilities, and are now used in hundreds of play areas, schools, hospices and hospitals.
Matching Robert Glenn Rapp Foundation grant ensures our spring bulb displays continue to grow
When temperatures begin to cool each fall, the horticultural staff of Myriad Botanical Gardens get busy, planting thousands of tulip, daffodil, hyacinth and narcissus bulbs throughout the Gardens. These carefully designed arrangements germinate during the long winter months as they wait for the warmth of spring to flower, covering the Gardens with a variety of blooms and colors.
On any given day in March, hundreds of visitors enjoy these beautiful displays, taking photos and creating memories. In 2018 we planted more than 30,000 bulbs and look forward to even bigger displays in the coming years.
To achieve this vision takes significant funding and we are fortunate to have generous and forward-thinking donors like Jil and Tony Boghetich in our community to support us via the Robert Glenn Rapp Foundation. The residents of Oklahoma City and La Jolla, California both serve on the board of the foundation, and Tony also serves on the Community Board of the Myriad Gardens Foundation. The couple have stewarded a matching grant awarded to the Gardens that ensures our spring bulb displays will continue in perpetuity.
Each year since 2016, the Gardens has raised $50,000 to meet this one-to-one matching grant for a total of $400,000 by the end of 2019.
“We are grateful to Jil and Tony Boghetich for their efforts to not only support us through the matching grant program of the Robert Glenn
Rapp Foundation, but for also helping us secure the matching portion of this grant every year to endow our spring bulb plantings,” said Maureen Heffernan, executive director of Myriad Botanical Gardens. “It is enormously satisfying to see so many people absolutely smitten with our spring bulb displays.”
Gardens Director of Horticulture Nate Tschaenn explains that a section of the Gardens called “the color curve” near the Great Lawn was carefully curated this year to maximize the varying bulbs and colors for dynamic impact.
“In 2018, the tulip curve display was designed like a color wheel transitioning from shades of red to orange, yellow, white, pink, purple and back to red again,” said Tschaenn. “There are 54 different tulip cultivars planted in 27 different plots along the curve. Each plot has two different, but similarly colored tulip cultivars intermixed, one early blooming and one late. This allowed our display to last even longer. Planting this many different tulips together also allowed us to easily evaluate tulips for future display elsewhere in the garden.”
We extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to the vision and generosity of The Glenn Rapp Foundation. Our much-anticipated spring blooms will continue to grow every year, thanks to Jil and Tony Boghetich, along with other donors who help us meet the match each year, bringing beauty and joy to countless people every spring for generations to come.

Members get free admission into 300+ Public Gardens
Members of the Myriad Gardens receive special admission privileges and discounts at more than 300 gardens through the American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP). Membership supports the Gardens’ continued success and is 100 percent tax deductible. Members also receive free admission to one of Oklahoma’s most treasured landmarks, the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. Individual/Dual membership is $50 and the family membership is $65.
Our family loves visiting the Crystal Bridge, Children’s Garden and splash pad at the Gardens. And the events they put on are amazing. The Gardens are one of our favorite places to go with our kids and is always somewhere we make sure to take friends and family to when they visit as well!
Kyle and Erin Youngs, Members
The Myriad Botanical Gardens are important to the economic development of our city. In addition to the numerous events that bring more than 500,000 residents and tourists to the gardens, the vibrancy and revitalization of the area encourages people to want to live and work downtown.
Cathy O’Conner, Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City
Myriad Botanical Gardens is a special place. The gardens are all spectacular, especially the Prairie Garden. Learning opportunities abound with the many educational workshops and children’s activities.
Bill Farris, Prairie Wind Nursery
The Wellness Retreat was a welcome respite for a special group of friends. We spent an entire day focused on our health and well-being through activities ranging from yoga to making our own facial masks and herbal vinegars to learning to mediate. I would do it every year!

THANK YOU OU VOLUNTEERS
Thanks to the students from the University of Oklahoma who volunteered in the Gardens on Saturday, April 14, 2018. They were participating in the OU Big Event, a campus wide community service project held each year in the spring. More than 6,000 students visit over 160 job sites in order to serve the surrounding community to say “thank-you” for everything they do for OU! The students stained the benches in the Children’s Garden and the dog park.
Seeking Volunteers to Help in the Gardens
The Gardens offers a fun variety of volunteer opportunities for adults, youth and groups that can easily fit into your schedule. Choose from:
SPECIAL EVENTS
The Gardens hosts a variety of events year-round that could not happen without volunteers. Volunteers serve on planning committees, help with event setup, assist with children’s crafts, story times, registration, and more. This is perfect for both individuals and groups that only want to volunteer one time, or those who want to volunteer regularly. See pages 8-9 for a list of events.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
The Education Department is always looking for dedicated volunteers to lead indoor and outdoor tours, act as a garden greeter and/or become children’s program leaders. If you are a natural
teacher or simply love plants and want to share your enthusiasm by learning to lead our education programs, this is an area that always needs additional help. Tour guides and children’s program leaders must become Partner Volunteers and pass a background check.
HORTICULTURE
As a horticulture volunteer, you would help to maintain the landscaping throughout the Crystal Bridge and the outside Gardens. This could range from weeding, planting/removing annuals, picking up dead/yellow leaves and possible plant exhibit work. If you enjoy working with your hands and being outdoors, this is the job for you!
For more information email Megan Brown at mbrown@myriadgardens.org
Last fall Cox Communication volunteers assisted with the tremendously successful Tree For All event! Thank you.
