Celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a morning of music, crafts, readings and a soul food tasting from Melodee’s Soul Food and Creole. Help unite OKC by placing a string on our “woven together” art display, bring a canned good food item that will be donated to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, or take a peace walk through the Gardens highlighting quotes and important events in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At 11:30 a.m. join us at the Water Stage or Park House Event Center (weather dependent) for a reading of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech followed by a performance from the Oklahoma Collegiate Gospel Choir.

We’ll delve into the fascinating properties of plants in this class as we perform experiments to discover how water moves in plants, how leaves eat, how sunflowers move with the sun and more. We’ll start by going over what plants need to grow and then put our mad scientist hats on to undertake experiments that show how smart plants are in figuring out ways to get what they need to grow.

Learning how to grow your plants from seeds is a fun, fascinating and fulfilling experience for all ages.

When you know how to start seeds, a much wider world of exciting plant options opens up to you. From the newest hybrids to rarer heirloom varieties, seed starting will introduce you to new plants while saving you a lot of money on plant purchases.

Seed starting is easy if you understand some basic tips and techniques. Our exhibit will showcase various ways to start seeds at home that can be transplanted into your outdoor flower or vegetable garden or directly sown in your garden.

You’ll see and learn about: containers, soil mixes, lighting options, watering, fertilizing, thinning, and transplanting techniques and more.

The displays will also help you learn how to avoid common germination and growing problems like inadequate lighting and offer disease prevention tips.

DESIGNING YOUR KITCHEN GARDEN

Join us in the Children’s Garden to celebrate the arrival of spring! We’ll start by decorating a pot and then planting our choice of flowers or vegetable seeds to take home to grow. Kiddos will be able to take painted pine cones and hang them all over the Children’s Garden to welcome in the season.

A kitchen garden design may be comprised of many elements in addition to its plants. These may include: pathways, raised beds, trellises, compost area and more.

Styles can range from elegant to utilitarian depending upon taste and budget. Our instructor will present how to approach kitchen garden design based on your preferences and space.

You’ll have time to work on a kitchen garden layout for your own yard with help from the instructor so you can leave with a plan to get you started.
