Come to this interactive outdoor class to learn how to grow pumpkins so you can have everything from monster pumpkins to minis for the fall. Kids will choose from several different types of pumpkins and pot one up to take home and grow. SONIC Summer Movies at Myriad Gardens, a much-loved summer tradition is back. Activities, food and lots of fun returns each Wednesday, July 5 to July 26, on the Great Lawn. Thanks to SONIC Drive-In these movies are completely FREE. Come early to get a great seat. Bring a picnic or enjoy food from our line-up of food trucks. Movies start at 9pm. with prefun starting around 8pm. Participants using blankets will sit on one side, lawn chairs to the other side. Fresh basil pesto is perfect to make in the summer when basil is fresh and abundant. But you can also make delicious pestos from carrot tops, mints and other greens that are wonderful too. In this workshop, we’ll harvest fresh herbs from the garden along with other plants from the supermarket. You’ll learn how to make various types of pestos – perfect for pastas, salads and more.

Seasonal Plaza by Pitchfork in the Park FREE, All Ages Welcome Join us as we transform the Seasonal Plaza into an urban dance space. You all voted and chose Hip Hop for our final dancing event. Beginning at 7pm, instructors from 3Sixty Dance Studio will give a Hip Hop dance demonstration followed by a FREE lesson for all. At 8pm, our DJ, Brian Smith, will crank up the tunes to get the dancing started. Drink and food specials will be offered to highlight the night. It’s 90s night. Wear your favorite 90s attire to celebrate the evening.

Carrying on the folk songster tradition, Flemons strives to mix traditional music forms with a contemporary approach, to create new sounds that appeal to a wide audience. In his recent solo album Prospect Hill (2014), Flemons drew from a wide range of styles, including ragtime, Piedmont blues, spirituals, southern traditional music, string band music,

AD ASTRA FOUNDATION fife and drum music, and jug-band music. In 2005, Flemons co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops, an African-American string band that won a Grammy in 2010. Today, he tours throughout the United States and internationally as “The American Songster.” Local group, Steelwind, will open the evening with a performance at 7:30pm with Flemons taking the stage at 8:30pm. Join us for a morning of learning and investigation as we delve into the wide world of bugs. We’ll explore what really makes an insect an insect, then discuss their habits and where they make their homes. Finally, we’ll head outside to the Children’s Garden for a bug safari to observe and make sketches of what we find.

Painting in the Gardens with Wine and Palette is back in July and will be set-up by the Great Lawn Folk Concert. You’ll have a choice of painting the Banjo, Guitar and Mandolin or paint the Southern Rockers on 16” x 20” canvas.
The Future Clear: Pyramid Tour Great Lawn Free
The community is invited to come to the Gardens to welcome, embrace and celebrate the ideals of the Pyramid Tour on the Great Lawn. Participants are encouraged to leave their phone or other screens at home and just come together, under the evening sky, with a blanket or chair to on the Great Lawn grass while listening to soothing, calming vibrations of Tibetan Bowl Music played on speakers. This soothing music traditionally has a meditative and highly relaxing and centering quality. Free and open to the public.

We’ve just added a special stand of buffalo grass, a native Oklahoma grass that not only looks great, but is low maintenance to boot! This grass only needs mowing about once a season and grows deep roots so that once it’s established, it needs much less water than your average lawn. Join our horticulturists for a lunchtime talk on Friday or after our Gardens Walking Tour on Saturday to hear about this grass as well as some other prairie grass favorites.

Even in a small backyard, you can create a wonderful home to provide cover, food and water for wildlife like birds, butterflies, squirrels and more. Using the Children’s Garden Wildlife Habitat as our outdoor classroom, we’ll play games and explore to learn what creatures need in their habitat and how you can create a home for them in any size area. Kiddos will head home with an upcycled birdhouse, and parents, you’ll head home with information on how to certify your habitat through the National Wildlife Foundation.
