DEAR MEMBERS & GARDENS FRIENDS

Like Oklahoma City, Myriad Botanical Gardens is booming with new developments and plans. As I write this, there are huge piles of dirt and machinery ‘”chaos”’ in the Meinders Garden where a new terrace is being constructed. We extend special thanks to Herman and LaDonna Meinders for making this new site for programs, rentals and general enjoyment possible.

Of course, we are very excited about not one, but two restaurants opening at the Gardens later this fall. The cult-status Nic’s burger at The Ice House and a delectable Park House lunch or dinner will make the Gardens an even more vibrant and tasty destination. We extend a warm welcome to Peter and Sheree Holloway, who will operate the restaurants and provide the Gardens with additional catering service.

PUMPKINVILLE, presented by OG+E Energy Corp., opens October 12 with 3,000 pumpkins and much family fun. The Devon Ice Rink opens November 15 followed by pop up Winter Shops on the Great Lawn produced by Prodigal LLC. Look for new and improved holiday lighting at the Gardens thanks to support from OG+E Energy Corp. Check out our brand new website for more details on all our events.

Take a stroll in our Children’s Garden to discover the wonderful new Storyteller Chair, handcrafted by OKC artist, Don Narcomey. A gift from Gail and Bill Beals, this chair will serve as an enchanting perch for storytellers in our popular children’s Bringing Books to Life reading programs underwritten by the Junior League of Oklahoma City.

The chair was officially unveiled on Saturday, September 21 during our first OKC READS event where several hundred children enjoyed listening to stories throughout the day in our Children’s Garden.

Halloween Party in Pumpkinville: A Woodland Adventure

Thanks to a generous grant funded by the Junior League of Oklahoma City, we are bringing books to life in fun and creative ways. During the month of October bring the family to the children’s garden each Wednesday evening at 5pm for Spooky Stories. Take a journey through the garden to discover whimsical creatures from Maurice Sendak’s award winning children’s classic, Where the Wild Things Are. In November and December we are Growing Vegetable Soup in the children’s garden.

Drop by to read the beautifully written and illustrated story by Lois Ehlert then learn how to grow a garden of peas, cauliflower, carrots, Irish potatoes and other hardy vegetables. Don’t forget join us each Wednesday morning at 10 for Reading Rainforest in the lobby of the Crystal Bridge.

Shop downtown this Holiday Season at the Winter Shops at Myriad Gardens presented by Prodigal LLC. Beautiful outdoor kiosk shops on the Gardens’ north plaza will feature an array of vendors offering the perfect gift for everyone on your shopping list. Winter Shops will also include food and entertainment throughout the shopping season – so check our website for complete schedule. Stop by before or after skating at the Devon Ice Rink or visiting Devon’s popular Saturdays with Santa. Shops Open Friday, November 21 through January 1, excluding Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas Day. Orchids in October to Honor Avis Scaramucci at October 17 Luncheon

The Myriad Gardens Foundation Board of Directors is delighted to announce that Avis Scaramucci, proprietor of Painted Door gift boutiques, Nonna’s Bakery and Nonna’s Euro-American Ristorante and Bar, is this year’s recipient of the James R. Tolbert III Crystal Orchid Award.

This is the 12th annual tribute to those individuals who significantly impact the beauty and success of not just the Myriad Botanical Gardens, but all of Oklahoma City. This celebration will be at a luncheon on Thursday, October 17, from 11:30am to 1pm at the Myriad Botanical Gardens.

Avis’ commitment to her businesses, customers and employees is matched by a commitment to Oklahoma City. She serves on numerous boards including: Bricktown Association, Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Advocates, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, Regional Food Bank, St. Anthony Foundation, and, of course, the Myriad Gardens Foundation to name just a few. She has been honored by the Oklahoma Hospitality Club “Ladies in the News” and named “Entrepreneur” for the Association for Women in Communications Byliner Award. She was “Panhellenic Woman of the Year” and received the “Chairman’s Award of Excellence” by the South Oklahoma City Chamber

of Commerce. She was selected as a “Living Treasure” by the Oklahoma Health Center Foundation, and has received the “Neal Horton Award” from Downtown Oklahoma City Dean A. McGee Awards. She was inducted into the “Circle of Excellence” for the Journal Record’s “Woman of the Year” and was also included in the OKC Friday Newspaper as one of the “50 Most Powerful Women” in Oklahoma City.

Her love for and support of the Myriad Botanical Gardens is evidenced by her continuous generous donations of her time and talent. Avis donates an impressive amount of catering services to the Gardens, most recently, 350 pieces of her famous Chocolate Cake for our 25th anniversary gala Splendor in the Gardens. She has also made it possible for the Gardens to have a wide variety of children’s books available for use in our Children’s Gardens to encourage literacy in the community. The Myriad Gardens Foundation is honored to be a beneficiary of her time, talent and passion.

OGE Energy Corp. Energizes Pumpkinville, Holiday Display We are thrilled to announce the continued, extraordinary support from OGE Energy Corp. to present our 2014 PUMPKINVILLE fall festival, our Holiday Light Display and FREE Sunday evenings (in December) at the Crystal Bridge.

Marking its second year, Pumpkinville is sure charm and delight thousands of children and families featuring dynamic fall displays, ghosts and gourds, hay bale mazes and plenty of hands-on arts and craft activities!

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Myriad Botanical Gardens Photos By Carl Shortt Jr.

June 20 was a festive and memorable evening that will sparkle forever in the history of the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Chairman Linda Haneborg, her co-chairman David Holt, and their brilliant band of volunteers created an evening that was truly unique and beautiful. The night began with our sponsors, who enjoyed a delightful reception hosted by Lori Tyler/ STELLA Modern Italian Cuisine. Guests were then escorted to the Great Lawn by a troupe of adorable fairy princesses alongside virtuoso Kyle Dillingham.

Our bevy of talented chefs including Kamala Gamble, John McBride, Kurt Fleishfresser and Avis Scaramucci created an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind farm to table dinner set against the backdrop of the beautiful Gardens.

And for the finale, forest animals and fairies served up mid-summer night libations by Jonathon Stranger/ Ludivine and guests danced the night away in the water of the seasonal plaza to the tunes of Born-N-November.

Raising a glass, and more than $225,000, this sold-out stellar event is sure to become an annual must-attend party.

Children can enjoy creating a small craft following the story. Take a tour of the Crystal Bridge or stroll through the children’s garden with your child afterward to explore the wonders of nature.

Come to the gardens this October to learn from The Brew Shop the ins and outs of home brewing! The autumn seasonal brew Pumpkin Spice Porter will be made using the “mini-mash” process. From steeping to boiling to adding hops and tasting some home brew, this will be a fun class! Class size is limited so sign up today! You must be 21 to register.

Dogs will learn: Focused attention, sit & down with hand signals, sit & down stay, come when called, walking on a loose leash with manners. This class will also address home behavioral issues, such as: chewing, jumping, nipping, nuisance barking, manners at the front door.

A Glimpse of What’s to Come This season brings exciting new learning opportunities for all ages at the Gardens. We’re pleased to offer a wide range of classes for adults about topics like home brewing, unique floral arrangements, energy enhancing botanicals, orchid care and beginner drawing classes! See the complete list on our website and in our calendar of events.

The Children’s Garden The Children’s Garden is full of new surprises. Take a journey beyond the playground and discover the wonders of nature through self-guided learning stations. Get a detailed look at bugs and plants through special specimen viewers, build habitats with natural materials and forts with tree house fabric, dig and plant in a garden bin, find birds with pint-sized binoculars, and create patterns and mosaics with natural materials. New, interpretive signage offers children the chance to learn and engage with the outside world through interactive play. Visit our raised beds to learn how to start your own seasonal garden and check out a book from our Little Free Library located on the porch.

During fall and winter break, we offer an assortment of seasonally-themed learning opportunities for children.

Whether your child is a budding artist, gardener, or entomologist, there is something for her here.

The Crystal Bridge If you’re an educator looking for field trip opportunities we offer guided tours of the Crystal Bridge as well as the Rainforest Ecology Activity Program (REAP). REAP is designed to reinforce national science and state education standards.

Classes are geared toward second through fourth grade, but can translate up to sixth grade. Guided tours and REAP classes are offered each Tuesday and Thursday. Call 405.445.7080 to book in advance.

OCTOBER 10 - NOVEMBER 15 Opening reception Thursday, Oct. 10 from 5-7pm.

The South Lobby Gallery of the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory will temporarily be home to a variety of works by local, regional and national artists. The exhibit is free to visit during regular Crystal Bridge hours. All artwork is for sale and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Gardens.

The Howell Gallery, 6432 North Western, Oklahoma City, was officially established in 1991 by Linda and Ken Howell, and is a showcase for fine original art by regionally and nationally recognized artists together with exciting works by new, emerging artists.

The Myriad Botanical Gardens began its Fine Art Series in September 2012 with an exhibit by photographer Carl Shortt Jr., whose breathtaking work is featured on the cover of this issue of ‘The Bridge,’ and whose wood-turning pieces have been shown at Howell Gallery.

Featured artists have included Joy Richardson, Bert Seabourn, J. Don Cook, America Meredith, Tony Tiger and most recently Doug Hoke. Upcoming shows include selections from the JRB Gallery in December, and works by Benjamin Harjo Jr. in January.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5 6 – 8PM Members Holiday Glow and Wreath Auction Adults 21 and over Members and donors are invited to kick off the holidays with the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Please join us in the Visitor’s Lobby and Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory for a festive evening filled with delectable fare, libations, live entertainment, holiday décor, ice skating and a silent auction filled with lavish holiday wreaths. Meet Our Horticulture Staff

Casey Sharber An Oklahoma native, Sharber took on the responsibility of Director of Horticulture last October. She received her bachelor’s degree in public horticulture from Oklahoma State University, after which she went to work in the commercial landscape industry where she oversaw the care of many properties including the Gaylord Texan Resort. She went on to the Longwood Graduate Program and received a master of science in public horticulture management from the University of Delaware. After graduation, she returned to Oklahoma to make a difference in local horticulture. Prior to her current position, she worked for OSU Extension as a horticulture educator for five years. Casey enjoys being a part of a great team that is responsible for the care and maintenance of an Oklahoma City icon.

Nate Tschaenn Conservatory Specialist, Nate Tschaenn is also a graduate of the Longwood Program in Public Horticulture at the University of Delaware. As a Graduate Fellow he had the opportunity to visit and study at dozens of botanical gardens and arboretums in the United States and abroad. Nate previously worked four years as the lead horticulturist for a 10,000 sq. ft. Costa Rica themed conservatory at Cleveland Botanical Garden. He received his bachelor’s degree in landscape horticulture from Ohio State University where he also worked as a student employee in the biological sciences greenhouse. Nate is excited by the tremendous potential of the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory and looks forward to living and working in Oklahoma City.

Sayre McNeil Sayre McNeil, the Lead Horticulturist for the Gardens’ outside grounds is originally from Rogers, Arkansas, but received his bachelor’s degree in horticulture turfgrass management from Oklahoma State University. Having done several commercial landscapes around the city, he’s enjoying the atmosphere of working downtown now, and taking on the challenges of the new landscape and likes seeing how it changes almost daily. His favorite plant in the garden (aside from the Patriot Bermuda that he helped install in the Children’s Garden) is the Blazing Star.

Jessie Sevener Jessie Sevener is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she received a degree in Conservation and Environmental Science from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee. She has loved gardening since she was a kid. Since moving to Oklahoma City a year ago and working at the Gardens, she learned so much about the plants here, and has enjoyed the experience of seeing the difference between gardening here versus in Wisconsin! Crape Myrtles immediately caught her eye due to their long lasting blooms and variety of colors. She enjoys being a part of such a great organization that’s helping to revitalize downtown OKC and can’t wait to continue watching the Gardens grow.

Joshua Berry Joshua Berry moved from Indiana to join the Gardens staff this spring. Gardening has been an interest of Joshua’s since childhood when he would help his grandparents with their vegetable garden. He received a bachelor of science degree in public horticulture from Purdue University. Joshua has interned with several public gardens across the nation including: Smithsonian Institute’s museum gardens; Missouri Botanical Garden; the historic Winterthur estate (Delaware); and the formal gardens of Filoli (Woodside, California). Joshua’s experiences in public gardening have given him a great interest in plant record systems and pruning methods. Joshua enjoys being able to always hear running water anywhere on the grounds from the many water features, especially the hottest days.

Kerry Rapp Kerry Rapp has been given the responsibility of being the Children’s Garden Manager. She is originally from Charleston, West Virginia, where she earned a degree in journalism and a master’s of science degree in horticulture from West Virginia University. She has worked as a landscape designer, nursery manager, and interiorscaper. For the past seven years, she was the executive director of Clary Gardens, a newly emerging garden in Coshocton, Ohio. Kerry is truly excited to be a part of the Gardens team and is looking forward to working both with the education and horticulture departments to bring plants to life in the hearts and minds of children.

Lori McDowell Lori McDowell was born in Hawaii, but spent most of her life in Oklahoma. A diehard OSU Cowboys fan she earned her associate’s degree in horticulture, majoring in turf grass management. Her horticulture background includes working on the OSU-OKC golf course and Will Rogers Park Greenhouse, where she developed her green thumb and love of tropical plants and cacti. For a year now she has been at Myriad Botanical Gardens and assists in the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. She enjoys coming to such a beautiful place every day and takes pride in making the Crystal Bridge look beautiful for the public to enjoy. She also enjoys the added bonus of taking care of Bo Jangles and Muffin (the resident parrots).

Welcome Ice House and Park House

The Myriad Botanical Gardens is pleased to welcome Peter and Sheree Holloway and their team to the Gardens.

The Holloways are the proprietors of Gardens’ new Park House and Ice House restaurants. “We are very pleased to welcome our new partners. After a thoughtful process, we found a proprietor in Peter Holloway who understands the complexities of operating in this space and whose experience, expertise and creativity will ensure that our restaurants will be terrific additions to downtown and will serve our many audiences,” said Gardens Chairman Emeritus Jim Tolbert.

The two restaurants are the Park House, located in the restaurant building, and the Ice House, located in the smaller building just north of the Park House. The Ice House, opening October 1, will serve authentic Nic’s burgers, along with fries and shakes. It will be open eight months per year, and will close during skating season. Nic’s, Oklahoma City’s favorite burger joint, has been featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive Ins and Dives,” and the current issue of Slice Magazine’s ‘Bodacious Burgers’ feature.

The Park House will open in November and will serve a variety of lunch and dinner items, with a full bar. Menus, interior design and build-out of the spaces are currently underway. Project architect is Elliott+Associates and general contractor will be Stacy Witter & Associates, Inc.

Peter Holloway, whose restaurant group now includes Edmond restaurants Boulevard Steakhouse, Café 501 and the Martini Lounge, as well as the Classen Curve location of Café 501, has been a part of the restaurant scene in the state since college. He began his career at the Hungry Peddler and discovered he loved the restaurant business and the rest is history. “The opportunity for offering a diverse experience in the Gardens is very exciting. From the BEST burgers and shakes at the Ice House to casual dining in The Park House, we couldn’t ask for a more unique setting!,” said Holloway.

Opens November 15 It’s back! OKC’s favorite wintertime activity is great fun (plus a little exercise) for the whole family! The Devon Ice Rink opens Nov. 15. Gardens Members skate for $7; nonmembers skate for $10. Includes skate rentals.

Friday nights are Rock N Skate nights, complete with a DJ, from 6 - 9pm Friday night, and Saturdays are Cartoon Skate days from 11am -1pm.

Private and group rentals are available, too! A one-hour session for up to 100 guests is $750; and a two-hour session for up to 100 guests is $1,200. This includes skate time and skate rentals.
