A PIECE OF HISTORY AT MENA AIRPORT T

he Mena Intermountain Municipal Airport is home to 20 to 40 general aviation planes and according to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Mena Airport is the fourth busiest airport in Arkansas. There are 18 companies at the airport, employing approximately 250 employees and contributing about $25 million to the Polk County income through direct revenue.

The airport started in the 1940's when a rough flying field was started on the McBride property south of Mena. The first hanger was built in 1942. In 1946, the Civil Aeronautics Commission chose the current site as an emergency landing strip for commercial aircraft. The current site was chosen because it is about midway between Fort Smith and Texarkana, which is about 100 miles between the airports in those towns.

ena Regional Health System will host the 10th Annual Health Fair this Saturday, September 15th from 8:00 a.m.

– 12:00 p.m. at the hospital. “This is our opportunity to give back to our community while promoting health and wellness. We are very grateful to the many businesses that have donated items to be given away during the event and for the support we’ve received from our volunteers and vendors.”- Sonya Maye, Marketing, PR Director. Vendors will be set up indoors and outdoors for the event. The Arkansas Blood mobile will be present for a blood drive. All donors will receive a Go Hog Wild t-shirt. Also, be sure to visit their booth indoors for a chance to win a smoothie machine. The kids will enjoy face painting, games with prizes, balloon animals, and a huge bounce house. The Drug Task Force is sponsoring a Drug Take Back opportunity for the community to dispose of their unused medications properly. They will be located outside the entrance to the hospital, along with the police and fire department. Come hungry, the Mena Regional Relay for Life Team will be grilling burgers and hamburgers. The cost is $6.00 including water, chips and a cookie. The MRHS Lab Department will be conducting reduced cost screenings during the fair. Lipid Panels (which includes HDL and LDL Cholesterol levels and Triglycerides) will be offered for $10.00. Prostate and Thyroid Cancer Screenings for $15.00. Fasting for blood work is recom-

mended, but not required. Glucose levels will be tested at the Med/Surg booth, along with diabetes education. Blood pressure tests will also be available at the Southwest EMS booth. Air Med and Survival Flight 10 will both offer membership benefits for a very low cost, which can save you thousands if you ever have to utilize the service. Make sure and stop by the Ouachita Rehabilitation Center booth and learn about several new services they are offering, including cupping and dry needling. Visit the Sam’s Club booth for a $10 gift card and new membership discounts. A demonstration about dairy nutrition and cooking with dairy will be presented by the UA Extension Office. Mother to Baby of North Texas will provide free counseling services on exposures during pregnancy and lactation. Additionally, at the MRHS Women’s Services Department, you can find a wealth of information on the benefits of breast feeding and becoming a new mother. The lengthy vendor list includes a wide variety of services beneficial to all ages. Golf cart transportation will be available to and from your vehicle, if needed. When you arrive, just watch for the cart to pass through the parking lot. is rooted in ethical assumptions or norms; and those ethical principles are initially derived from religious perceptions or convictions. In order for the heart of American laws to endure, the source that moved them in the beginning must continue and that source was primarily natural law based in the Judeo-Christian metaphysic.

American laws and social institutions rest upon the moral postulates of Christianity and are intricately woven into the fabric of our culture.

The American constitution grew out of more than one hundred and fifty years of colonial self-government and more than seven centuries of British experience. Ours is the oldest and the longest functioning constitution in modern history and it has maintained a balance between the claims of freedom and the claims of authority as has no other. The reasons for that are varied, but we can begin with the fact that it was born out of a culture, not created by a country. America possesses two constitutions, existing side by side yet distinct.

One is the formal written constitution and the other is the older unwritten one - of customs, compromises, conventions, habits, and ways of living together in the civil social order that developed in America since Jamestown. This order is bigger than its laws, and many aspects of it are

determined by beliefs and customs rather than being created by good laws. Enduring constitutions contain provisions and assumptions which are permanent, preserving a society’s continuity through many generations. No matter how admirable a constitution may look on paper, it will be ineffectual unless the unwritten constitution reflects and affirms a moral order of obligation and personal responsibility. As John Adams expressed it, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.

It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." James Madison stated, "To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people is a chimerical [impossible/illusionary] idea."

What it comes down to is our willingness to govern ourselves in accordance with those timeless and proven "moral and religious" principles and precepts which have sustained us for so long, and doing so through what Edmund Burke described as the "little platoons." These are the local/ community institutions such as our homes, churches, civic organizations, schools, and voluntary associations which serve the common good, undergird American character, strength and freedom, and represent the "unwritten" substance of our Constitution and the building blocks of our culture.

What happens when that culture abandons its roots, its foundation, its religious heritage founded upon the transcendent?

Over time, a people can lose their Constitution even without changing its written provisions. Have we?

America was founded and built from the ground up; from individuals, families, and communities and it is still here at the local grassroots level where restoration must begin if it is to be substantive and enduring.

This has been happening to some degree over the past several years, but will it continue? Author Russell Kirk stated, "Great states with good constitutions develop when most people think of their duties and restrain their appetites. Great states sink toward their dissolution when most people think of their privileges and indulge their appetites freely.” The ruin or restoration of America's constitution will be determined more by choices than by circumstances."

G.K Chesterton reminds us that history does not unfold like clockwork, but instead is the unpredictable unfolding of a moral tale that depends, in every moment, on what people choose to do or not do.

Good constitutions are fundamentally organic and develop out of a moral order; and every moral order is born of religious beliefs. At the dawn of any civilization, people unite in search of communion with a higher power, and from that religious community all other aspects of culture flow - including a civilization's laws. The Ouachita Strings Ensemble (OSE) will be holding their Second Annual Concert in the Park on Saturday, September 15 beginning at 5 p.m. by The Pavilion at Jansen Park in Mena.

from the Little Rock Air Force base. He also stated the Mena Airport has no flight school, although there a couple of flight instructors in the area.

But, the Mena Intermountain is also home to a legendary airplane, a DC-3 that is owned by Mike Sheppard.

Sheppard said the DC-3 was a bucket list item. He said it saw it at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Sheppard stated when it became available, he purchased it.

Sheppard said the DC-3 was the first aircraft that allowed airlines to make a profit by hauling people. Before the DC-3, airlines had to haul cargo to make air travel profitable. He said the first thing you notice about his plane is the massive size and the recognizable sound of the engines.

Sheppard said his DC-3 is a 1941 Western Airliner. It was used in World War II by the Army/Air Force. War historians contend the DC-3 contributed to the allies winning the war, more than any piece of hardware. Sheppard's DC-3 was retired in 1969 and was an airliner for five or six

different companies.

Sheppard flew his DC-3 and displayed it at the 2017 Thunder Over the Rock air show at the Little Rock Air Force Base. At that air show, Sheppard was approached by an Army officer and asked him fly his aircraft to St. Joseph, Missouri for the Sound of Speed air show.

Sheppard reported he opened his DC-3 for tours at the air show and 1,300 people stood in line for 45-minutes to tour the legendary DC-3. He reported half the people who toured the aircraft were children and had never seen a DC-3. Sheppard said many of the people who toured the aircraft stated their first flight was aboard a DC-3.

Sheppard plans to fly his DC-3 to Little Rock for the Thunder Over the Rock air show September 27th and 28th.

Sheppard said he would like to help organize a fly-in at the Mena Airport in the future. He said the Mena Airport hosted a Wings and Wheels event in the past, and he would like to see the airport host one again. He said he would be willing to let area residents and interested parties take a tour of his famous aircraft.

will be open to the public. Donations will be accepted and will go towards the OSE Studio’s students’ instruments, instrument repairs, musical supplies and scholarships.

Spectators of the concert are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, picnics and/or drinks. In the event of inclement weather, the venue will be changed to the Grace Bible Church in Mena.

For the Second Annual Concert, the OSE will be joined by several local artists, faculty from the Mena High School, Mena Middle School, a member of the Mena High School Band and a member of the Fort Smith Symphony to make up the 20-plus

person orchestra.

A variety of musical genres will be performed including classical, Celtic, pop, rock and folk music. Songs from movies such as The Phantom of the Opera and The Patriot will be played as well as covers from bands including Coldplay and Kansas.

The OSE is a local music group that was organized in 1991 by Joanne Dyer and Mary Dixon. They meet in Dixon’s private studio under the teaching and direction of Merribeth Christopher. The OSE includes members of all ages and they perform at local and out of town events including weddings, parties, ceremonies, fundraisers, festivals and more.

FREEDOM AND RESPONSIBILITY When Jesus said, “you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free,” did He intend for us to understand “freedom” in an absolute sense? Of course not.

With real freedom comes responsibility. The old saying is “you are free to swing you arms around until they come into contact with my nose. At that point your freedom ends and responsibility, and accountability, begin.” The Bible never presents a kind of freedom that is absolute; there are always restrictions. When God said “you shall not” He was placing restrictions on freedom.

And those restrictions are necessary! God’s rules never conflict with the kind of freedom that is from Him and good for us. In our own time our culture is involved in debating some of those rules and restrictions. Example: does a woman have the kind of freedom over her own body that allows her to kill an unborn child in her body?

Some say yes, some say no. The answer is so simple that it is often rejected without real thought. Freedom always, always comes with moral responsibility. While freedom is not absolute, some things are, and without those things we die!

Every culture that is made up of two or more people must have rules and responsibilities that govern conduct. The same rules must apply to everyone in that culture.

And when someone in that culture refuses to live by those rules chaos results, unless the culture enforces those rules. God gave rules (commandments) in order to create a society in which real freedom is a reality. The Apostle, Paul, in writing a letter to a young preacher named Timothy said: “…the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers…”

If we were a people who lived lives with serious responsibility to those around us, if we lived lives where no one murders or steals or lies or blasphemes, then we would not need law, But unfortunately we live in a culture today, in America, where that kind of responsibility is rapidly going away from us. And we are now several generations deep in a culture that is losing the concept of absolutes, and without that we will self-destruct at some point. Without the absolutes of the Word of God every man will soon become a “law unto themselves.”

Freedom, yes! Certainly, but freoedom only lives where responsibility abides. We are accountable to God, and we will give an account to Him. But for now we are also accountable to each other and to the culture in which we live. We have licenses to drive our automobiles, but if we do not observe the rules that the culture imposes, then we are in danger of losing the privilege. We are not absolutely free to break the speed-limit, or to drive into an automobile owned by someone else. “I am free in Christ cannot be used as a defense for being irresponsible.”

Years ago when speaking to a youth group, one of the young people asked the question “what does it mean to be mature?” The answer is simple: maturity means taking responsibility for our actions, thoughts, and attitudes. Taking responsibility means that we do not blame someone else for the things that we do. Before God “Confession” means that “I did it and it was wrong and no one else is to blame.” A mature culture demands mature individuals. Maturity means living within the rules of the culture and accepting personal responsibility for doing so.

In the Christian faith we are responsible, not only to God, but also to each other.

We are responsible to encourage, to build, up to care for, to love, to pray for, and, sometimes even to rebuke (but only as the Spirit of God leads!).

LEE ASHLEY GANDY Lee Ashley Gandy, age 83 of Mena, Arkansas passed away Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Lee was born in Anderson, Missouri on November 12, 1934 to the late Raleigh Walter Gandy and the late Myrtle Florence Mason Gandy. He was married to Linda Borders Gandy for 63 happy years. Lee was a self-employed machinist, who accepted difficult jobs and took pleasure in the challenge. He was an accomplished Snooker Enthusiast and enjoyed coon hunting and fly fishing with family and friends. He enjoyed motorcycle riding with Linda and held a patent for developing a Heel and Toe Shifter for motorcycles. Lee served as past president of Mena Youth Baseball League, and a union representative for the Brotherhood of Signalman of the KCS Railroad. He served many years as an Assistant Postmaster and a union representative for postal supervisors. While working as Assistant Postmaster he accomplished 60 hours while maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Henderson’s Mena branch. Lee was Chief Architect and Carpenter on the 49 year old Gandy House on Gandy Lane. He was a generous man offering assistance to those in need. Most of all he loved God and his family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mena, where he

and friend to all who knew him.

He is survived by Wife Linda MeLee Gandy of Mena, Arkansas; Son Brian Lee Gandy of Huntsville, Texas. Daughters Dawn Renee Jackson and husband Alan of Cabot, Arkansas; Susan Elaine Tre`an-Saor of Culpeper, Virginia.

THOMAS EUGENE EATON Thomas Eugene “Gene” Eaton, age 68 of Hatfield, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock. He was born on April 4, 1950 in Salinas, California. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Cannie Delores “Dee” Eaton (Youmans), and an infant daughter, Johnna Deanna Eaton.

He is survived by three sons, Brandon Sean Eaton at Hatfield, Arkansas, Thomas Joshua Eaton of Russellville, Arkansas and John Mark Eaton of Fayetteville, Arkansas; daughter, Cannie Dionne Zebert, of Pierce City, Missouri; sister, Edna Linde of Harrison, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; close personal friends, Peggy and Joe Murphy along with many other family and friends.

“Gene”, as he was known, was a man of good humour, ever optimistic, energetic and industrious. He lived overseas while in the military, and traveled extensively for work and pleasure.

He spent years as a mechanic for the Union Pacific Railroad, and a over the road truck driver, Gene was an entrepreneur and was very adventurous. Learning a great multitude

As a father, he was engaged and fun, leading by example but never seeking to mold his children after himself. A unique man who carved his own path, Gene granted the same respect, tolerance, and goodwill to all whom he met, regardless of their reputation or station in life. He looked to find the good in everyone, and chose to speak of that.

Gene had little regard for gossip, and ignored ridicule without effort. Fiercely individualistic, he answered to no one, though he never passed an opportunity to perform a good deed or favor. He needed to feel as though he gave more than he took from life. Gene was humble and kind during good times, stoic and helpful during adversity. He loved meeting new people and seeing new places. Gene suffered many injuries to his body and heart, and bore them without complaint. He was aware of his own shortcomings, and often too hard on himself.

Adopting his spouse’s hometown and family as his own, his heart always remained true to his wife. He never remarried and loved her in her absence for over three decades. His remains will be placed with her so that they may be reunited together forever. Gene touched the lives of many many unknown to his survivors. He will be dearly missed.

THOMAS EUGENE EATON Jacqueline Kay Turner, 80 of Vandervoort, Arkansas passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

She was born on July 26, 1938 Grand Rapids, Minnesota to the late David Jerald Bergstrom and Susan Margaret Johnson.

Jackie was also preceded in death by her two baby boys; Todd Turner and David Turner, three brothers; Jerry Bergstrom, Jim Bergstrom and Rodger Bergstrom, and one infant great grandson; John Wayne Carver.

She is survived by two daughters Katherine Johnston and her husband Rex, Katrina Hendricks and her husband Michael, and two sons Joe Turner and Kelly Turner, nine grandchildren; Larry Carver and wife Debbie, Douglas Turner, Eric Carver and wife Lucy, Jessica Turner, Krishna Turner, Nicole Carver, Cody Turner, Colton Hendricks, Conner Hendricks, Loretta Johnston and eleven great grandchildren including her great granddaughter Aubree whom she was so proud to be raising. Numerous nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.

MENA WINS HOME OPENER AGAINST HOT SPRINGS Submitted by Easton Leonard ast Friday, September 7th, the Mena Bearcats (2-1) senior high football team hosted the Hot Springs Trojans (0-2) for their home opener at Bearcats Stadium. Going into Friday’s matchup against the Trojans, Mena had defeated DeQueen (28-14) in a week one matchup, and fell to Prescott (42-14) in week two.

The Bearcats were the first team to get on the scoreboard with a thirty-five yard touchdown pass from Max Montgomery to Zane Stephens. Brodersen made the point-after-attempt for Mena, making the score 7-0 with 6:39 left in the first quarter.

For their second score of the night, after a turnover by Hot Springs, the Bearcats scored on a twelve yard touchdown pass from Max Montgomery to Brock Strother over the middle. Mena missed the point-after-attempt, to make the score 13-0 in the first quarter of play.

first half, Cauy House picked-off the Trojans, after a nice rush of the quarterback from Torrey Voisin. Nick Linch then ran twenty-three yards to the Hot Springs one yard line, where Zane Stephens ran in for another Bearcat touchdown. Brock is a senior TE,DE and he had an outstanding touchdown catch and several key blocks for the Bearcats in last week’s game. Brock has plans to continue his football career after high school by taking his size, strength and talents to the next level and playing college football. KESTERSON NAMED ASSISTANT CFO AT MRHS Karey Don Kesterson was recently named Assistant Chief Financial Officer at Mena Regional Health System.

He has been serving as the Controller since May of this year, coordinating department budgets and establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls.

Kesterson was born at Mena Regional Health System and raised in Mena. He attended Henderson State University after high school where he

MENA NETTERS FALL TO NASHVILLE n September 6th, the Mena tennis teams were defeated by the Nashville O Scrappers 5-2.

Mena’s Stephanie Lua and Marissa Ortiz defeated the Nashville duo of

Andrew Graves led Mena in rushing yards with 68 on twelves carries, while Zane Stephens rushed for 60 yards on nine carries, Jake Wiles 39 yards on thirteen carries, and Nick Linch 37 yards on three carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jayden Castillo led the Bearcats with 14 tackles, Cauy House 12 tackles, Marc Wilson and Jonny Gunn 11 tackles each,

and Zion Barnes also in double digit numbers with 10 tackles.

The Bearcats next game will be on September 21st at Ozark (1-1), after an off week this week. Up until this point in the season, the Hillbillies from Ozark were defeated by Booneville (42-20) in week one, and then defeated Clarksville (42-13) in week two. The last time Mena took on the Hillbillies was on November 16th, 2012, when Ozark defeated the Bearcats 33-12 in the second round of the 4A State Football Tournament.

Pinkerton and Gibbs by the score of 6-3, while the Mena boys’ doubles team of Payton Medlin and Zeb Wilson also defeated Backus and Howard by the score of 6-3.

Mena’s Kara O’Donnal was defeated by Fant, 6-1. Mena’s doubles team of Eli Cook and David Grenier lost to Backus and Howard, 6 to 5. Nashville’s Dyer and Rhodes defeated Avery Bowling and Kyntlie Wiles 6 to 2. Chantal Sims was edged by Nashville’s Barnett 6-3 and Cogburn and Rhodes blanked Mena’s Naudia McCulley and Aliyah Ayers 6-0.

Wesley Seals, 39, of Mena was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Montgomery County.

SEPTEMBER 3 & 4, 2018 Benjamin D. Farley, 19, of Mena was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Bailee Christian Cook, 19, of Mena was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2018 A local man reported the theft of a cell phone. Case is pending location and interview of suspect.

Deanna Pate, 35, of Glenwood was arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Mena Police Department.

Report was made of the theft of campaign towns from local areas. Case pending.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2018 Employees at a local fast food restaurant reported that someone had lost a bicycle from the back of a vehicle.

Officers retrieved the bike and took it to the police department for safe keeping. The owner later came to the police station and recovered the bicycle.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2018 Asa Reid Dixon, 20, of Mena was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Levi R. Cottman, 28, of Mena was arrested on a warrant from the Polk County Sheriff.

SEPTEMBER 8, 2018 Blake Edward Caldwell, 32, of Mena was charged with drinking in public after a complaint from a local resident.

CASH MOB STRIKES AGAIN! Submitted By Judy Thompson Partners to encourage the ‘Buy Local’ ick and Donna Chrisman hosted the effort. Since the monthly activity began September Downtown Cash Mob last October, over $7,000 has been spent at the mobs. Thompson advised that the Saturday morning at American Artisans with complimentary refreshments. After October Cash Mob would be a birthday celebration of the event. Anyone is invited having fun with theatrical introductions, to the Mobs. There are only two rules: memory game, trivia and door prizes, the name of the shop to be ‘mobbed’ Spend at least $20 and have fun! was drawn. The mob then proceeded to Stitch Chick to have more fun and spend money. After Lisa Brewer, Stitch Chick owner, recovered from a big group of ladies laughing, hollering and converging on her store, she welcomed the Mob and told them about her shop. Then the Mob did what they do best: shop!
