A PIECE OF HISTORY AT MENA AIRPORT T
he Mena Intermountain Municipal Airport is home to 20 to 40 general aviation planes and according to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Mena Airport is the fourth busiest airport in Arkansas. There are 18 companies at the airport, employing approximately 250 employees and contributing about $25 million to the Polk County income through direct revenue. The airport started in the 1940's when a rough flying field was started on the McBride property south of Mena. The first hanger was built in 1942. In 1946, the Civil Aeronautics Commission chose the current site as an emergency landing strip for commercial aircraft. The current site was chosen because it is about midway between Fort Smith and Texarkana, which is about 100 miles between the airports in those towns. Airport Manager Fred Ogden reported that the Mena Airport also provides take-off and landing training for Airman

ena Regional Health System will host the 10th Annual Health Fair this Saturday, September 15th from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the hospital. “This is our opportunity to give back to our community while promoting health and wellness. We are very grateful to the many businesses that have donated items to be given away during the event and for the support we’ve received from our volunteers and vendors.”- Sonya Maye, Marketing, PR Director. Vendors will be set up indoors and outdoors for the event. The Arkansas Blood mobile will be present for a blood drive. All donors will receive a Go Hog Wild t-shirt. Also, be sure to visit their booth indoors for a chance to win a smoothie machine. The kids will enjoy face painting, games with prizes, balloon animals, and a huge bounce house. The Drug Task Force is sponsoring a Drug Take Back opportunity for the community to dispose of their unused medications properly. They will be located outside the entrance to the hospital, along with the police and fire department. Come hungry, the Mena Regional Relay for Life Team will be grilling burgers and hamburgers. The cost is $6.00 including water, chips and a cookie. The MRHS Lab Department will be conducting reduced cost screenings during the fair. Lipid Panels (which includes HDL and LDL Cholesterol levels and Triglycerides) will be offered for $10.00. Prostate and Thyroid Cancer Screenings for $15.00. Fasting for blood work is recom-
mended, but not required. Glucose levels will be tested at the Med/Surg booth, along with diabetes education. Blood pressure tests will also be available at the Southwest EMS booth. Air Med and Survival Flight 10 will both offer membership benefits for a very low cost, which can save you thousands if you ever have to utilize the service. Make sure and stop by the Ouachita Rehabilitation Center booth and learn about several new services they are offering, including cupping and dry needling. Visit the Sam’s Club booth for a $10 gift card and new membership discounts. A demonstration about dairy nutrition and cooking with dairy will be presented by the UA Extension Office. Mother to Baby of North Texas will provide free counseling services on exposures during pregnancy and lactation. Additionally, at the MRHS Women’s Services Department, you can find a wealth of information on the benefits of breast feeding and becoming a new mother. The lengthy vendor list includes a wide variety of services beneficial to all ages. Golf cart transportation will be available to and from your vehicle, if needed. When you arrive, just watch for the cart to pass through the parking lot. Those that visit each vendor table will be eligible to win one of the many grand prizes to be announced at the end of the fair. The Morning Walk with Shane
