Community Poised to Host the Ouachita Arts Celebration

BY MELANIE BUCK • news@mypulsenews.com The Downtown Arts District will be transformed this weekend as the area is poised to host the annual Ouachita Arts Celebration, Saturday, November 5th. The event has garnered strong community partnerships that continues to help it grow and soar in popularity, attracting locals and tourists alike. The event is a huge and eclectic collaboration of partnerships from businesses to artists to students and organizers credit many humble volunteers that begin working months in advance behind the scenes to produce the one-day event.

The Polk County Courthouse is receiving some much needed exterior work as part of a Restoration Grant given by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson announced in July 20 16 that the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, had awarded $ 2,8 42,8 6 2 in grants for proj ects in 54 Arkansas counties—i ncluding Polk County—t hrough its County Courthouse Restoration Subgrant, Historic Preservation Restoration rant, Certified ocal o ern ent Subgrant and ain Street Downtown Revitalization Grant programs.

Kropp Chosen as Arts Educator Award Local Couple Honored with Governor’s Arts Award Winner

ena High School Drama teacher, Jessica Kropp, has been selected to receive a high honor for her hard work and dedication to all things theatre. Kropp will be recognized as Theatre Sq uared’s 20 16 Arts Educator Award Winner at the Gala for Education and Access on Thursday, November 3rd, at 6 :0 0 pm at the Fayetteville Town Center. “ We value Ms. Kropp’s talent and passion for the arts and the impact she has made and continues to make on the students in our district,” said MHS administration.

When Kropp learned she would be honored with TheatreSq uared’s Arts Educator Award, she said, “ I was so encouraged and grateful. It is such a wonderful thing to be recognized for the work that you put your heart and soul and time into each day. TheatreSq uared is the Northwest Arkansas’s only year-round professional theatre. It produces thought-provoking and entertaining plays and is an outstanding resource or theatre teachers. They ha e co e the last fi e years to ena to do a content specific show oe Show, History Show, etc . They ha e also helped e get grants to get professional theatre artists to come to Mena to teach 1-3 day workshops on playwrighting, improv, and stage combat. They also have reasonably priced theatre teacher professional development in the su er. ha e gone to fi e years o their training, and ha e beco e a uch better artist, teacher, and leader because of it, and therefore I am awed that they would choose to honor me.”

am and Barbara Tobias, of Mena, are recipients of a prestigious award given by The Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. The Arkansas Arts Council recently announced the recipients o the o ernor s rts wards, and the Tobias’s as the recipients of the Arts Community Development Award. For 26 years, the Governor’s Arts Awards program has recognized individuals and corporations for their outstanding contributions to the arts in Arkansas.

Each year, the recipients are nominated by the public and then selected by an independent panel of arts professionals from around the state.

Each of the recipients will be honored at a ceremony in the spring and will receive an original work of art created by Arkansas artist, Elizabeth James, of Springdale.

For the past 15 years, Sam and Barbara Tobias have provided generous support to SouthWest Artists, Inc., a community-based arts organization in ena ounded in . They ha e donated their ti e, talents and financial support to uphold the organi ation s ission o bringing art to the people o ol County.

Stanley e plained that her husband, ay, beca e ery ill three years ago and she is his pri ary caregi er. She said along with that, and wanting to spend ore ti e with grandbabies, she new the ti e was right. t s bittersweet. Henry Nielson, Independent candidate for District 20 House of Representatives spoke at the Mena Lions Club on Friday, October 28th. he U of A Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service is one of the many partners implementing the 21st Century Families Grant at Acorn campus this year. County Extension Agent Carla Vaught is spending every other Monday working with the program conducting a program called AgVentures.

The number one concern of the extension advisory council agriculture committee in Polk County is the lack of knowledge among the general public about where their food comes from. AgVentures is a science based program developed by Vaught to help teach students about modern food production. Lessons include hands on activities as well as a presentation at each session about an aspect of a commodity produced in Polk County or a commodity trending at the time. This partnership and series of lessons are being designed to help students become more agriculture literate. Lessons touch on the economic impact of agriculture in Polk County as well as possible careers in agriculture science fields.

The first session o g entures eatured table egg production. The students participated in a irtual field trip to an egg ar . ollowing their tour, students e aluated eggs and looked at the exterior and interior of eggs purchased in a local grocery store. They also got to loo at eggs produced in a local bac yard oc . This obser ation lead to learning about egg grades and uni or ity o a carton o eggs. ter the physical e aluation, a blind taste test of scrambled eggs was conducted. Students involved couldn’t distinguish any differences in any of the types of eggs. This lead to a discussion about the cost per dozen of eggs and whether they perceived any one type of egg should be priced higher than the others.

Students were also challenged to eat a pickled q uail egg on Halloween. They certainly looked like “ eyeballs” . esson two too students to another poultry ar . This ti e it was a broiler oc irtual tour. The Alabama Extension service produced this tour and took youth on a tour from day one until catching at days o age. ollowing the tour, students learned to read ood labels and determine the nutritional value of a chicken q uesadilla prepared as a snack in the classroo . e ore each student could eat their snac , they had to tell aught the calorie count and how it would fit into their daily ood plan based on the y late nutritional guideline.

Next lesson up for the month of November will be on turkey production and nutrition.

Benigno Ferro Francisco, age 81, of Mena, died Monday, October 24, 2016 at the St. Vincent Hospital in Hot Springs. He was born on Tuesday, May 7, 1935 in Lima, Peru.

Benigno came to the United States at a very young age and settled in Allentown, Pennsylvania where he worked for Lucent Technology for 32 years. After he retired, he and his wife, Melissa, moved to Acorn in 2001 to enjoy life. He enjoyed playing soccer, watching boxing, and going to the Senior Center in Mena. Benigno was a loving, compassionate husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Benigno is survived by his wife, Melissa Francisco of Mena; his daughter, Rosalinda Starling of Houston, Texas; one brother, Enrique Francisco of Waldron; two grandchildren, Riley and Lars Starling of Houston,

Barbara regularly uses her writing abilities to garner publicity for the organization through pro otional articles. She also secured a three year grant or the gallery s first e ecuti e director. n addition, she teaches classes in drawing, oil painting, fiber arts and writing.

ELIZABETH DOBBS Elizabeth Dobbs, age 78, of Hatfield passed away Sunday, October 30, 2016 in Fort Smith,

Arkansas.

She was born in Mena, Arkansas on February 11, 1938 to the late Homer Hammond and Georgia Harris Hammond. She was married to the late Roy C. Dobbs and was a loving homemaker. First and foremost she loved taking care of her family. Mrs. Dobbs also enjoyed gardening and listening to old gospel music. She was a loving and kind mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to all who knew her. She will dearly be missed.

AST Night Out showcases how students are making a difference in their communities through self-directed, service-oriented learning.

During EAST Night Out, students in EAST get a chance to welcome partners in the school and the local community into their classroom, where they can demonstrate how their technology-infused education impacts those around them, celebrate the work already underway, and share plans for future endeavors. On October 20 , Cossatot River High School had stations January 6,how 201 set up that presented Garageband, the Green Screen, inal Cut ro, hotoshop, n scape, and rinting are beneficial to their program. Our visitors enj oyed posing in front of the Green Screen for a fun picture.

The visitors also learned about the programs we use every day by watching demonstrations of Photoshop, Inkscape, Garageband, etc. They also learned about the constructive and creative potential of our new 3D Printer and how it functions. It was a learning experience for both the students and the community; we hope that they will think of us whenever a problem occurs in the community.

MHS Fine Arts to Present ‘Seussical the Musical’ SUBMITTED

he Mena High School Fine Arts Department is in high gear as they prepare for Seussical the Musical. Casting for the roles was held at the end of September and the cast, crew, and directors are rehearsing 4 days a week to prepare this great show for audiences of all ages.

As the story begins, there is nothing but a bare stage with an odd red-and-white striped hat in the center. A small child, JoJo, discovers it and imagines what it could belong to, finally conjuring up the Cat in the Hat. The Cat creates the Seussian world around him and JoJo, and he acts as the narrator for the remainder of the musical, and is JoJo’s mentor during the play.

The Cat in the Hat will be played by Kelsey Wiggins and JoJo is being played by Kiylee Hughes, the only non high school actor. Other well known Seuss characters with solos include: Horton the Elephant-Braden Purvis, Gertrude Mcfuzz-Abi McPherson, Mayzie Labird-Szilvia Fuleki, Sour Kangaroo-Sarah Rose, Mr. Mayor-Brynn Harvey, Mrs. Mayor-Hannah McDonald, and Y ertle the Turtle by Nick Sorel. Other characters are The Wickersham Brothers-Jimmy Dilbeck, Daniel Green, Rachel McCullen; The Bird Girls-Sophie Dennis, Lindsey Logan, Jocelyn Parsons; and Thing 1 & Thing 2 by Caroline Morgan and Nalu Pruitt.

Director for this fabulous show is Jessica Kropp, Musical Director is Ferroll Taylor, set designer-Stephanie Ladd- all faculty members at MHS; student choreographers are Abi McPherson and Kelsey Wiggins, and the costume designer is Ruby K. Manis.

Show dates for the public will be Saturday, November 19 at 7 :30 pm and Sunday, November 20 at 2:30 pm. Performances will be held at the Mena High School Performing Arts Center. Admission for the show is $ 5.0 0 .

F.L.A.S.H. C.A.T.S. Program Hosts Open House H

olly Harshman Elementary recently hosted Open House for their afterschool F.L.A.S.H. C.A.T.S. program. Parents were able to see what activities their children participate in through the program.

Holly Harshman Elementary has programs in the mornings and afternoons. From 6 :45 a.m. – 7 :45 a.m., Monday through Friday, students can receive homework help and tutoring. In the afternoons, participants are fed a snack and dinner, paid for by a grant through the Department of Human Services.

Paulette Crawford and Cindy Brevik head the program at HHE. They reserve time in the afternoons for homework and club time as well. Their clubs include: Computer Coding, Robotics, Drug Awareness and Violence Awareness, Cooking, Sewing, Science, Soccer, Basketball, Track, Scholastics, Geo-Motion, and more.

They serve, on average, approximately 127 students in grades 3 – 5.

Will Webb - Retired Alaskan Bush Pilot

Mena’s Will Webb has had an interesting life. He spent several years as a bush pilot in Alaska for starters.

Webb was born in Purcell, Oklahoma, but was raised in northwest Arkansas, where the Regional Airport is now. “ I went to high school in Gentry, Arkansas,” said Webb. “ I graduated in 19 55 and j oined the Air Force right after graduation. I was in the Air Force for eight years.” ill enjoyed his ti e in the ir orce. hen first went in, thought d be there ore er, said ebb. ter eight years, de eloped a little bit o a medical problem and got a medical discharge. If not for that, I would have been in the Air Force until they got rid of me.” “ I really wasn’t interested in planes until I got out of the Air Force and we lived in Topeka Kansas,” said Webb. “ We lived out in the country and I passed a small dirt airport every time I went back and forth to work. I got kind of crossways with my boss. Every time I’d go by this airport I’d see these guys ying and thin , bet once they are up there they don t care uch about what the boss thin s So thought going to ha e to try that ysel . nd sure enough, got real interested in it. burnt y ill up with getting y Co ercial ating, nstru ent ating and was a ight instructor. “ Then we moved to western Kansas,” said Webb. “ We were there about a year. While I was in the Air Force, I always tried to get stationed in las a, but ne er did. So, once we got out we decided we d sa e up a little oney and o e to las a whene er we could. So, we o ed to las a in . e had our ids, a Saint ernard and a ol swagen an, one o those ol swagen ca pers. e really li ed that an. see one e ery once in a while and reali e they are pretty s all. y wi e had si ol swagen ugs she li ed ol swagen ugs. She had one in ansas, we sold it to get the an, then when we got to las a we sold the an to get another ug and she had fi e or si ore a ter that. y wi e, ic ie, was an ir orce nurse, said ebb. e were stationed in elaware, and got arried in aryland. e didn t ha e uch oney, so one o our entertain ent things was we d dri e around nice neighborhoods, to loo at nice houses. started noticing that there was a ol swagen in the dri eway o al ost e ery one o the . So, thought aybe that s how they got their big house. So we got a ol swagen and sure enough the tires lasted a lot longer. t held two and a hal uarts o oil.

Will worked as the General Manager of a snowmobile distributorship once they got to Alaska. “ We had Polaris, Y amaha, Meridian outboard motors and a couple of boat lines,” said Webb. “ I worked there for about 12 years. Then we lost our Polaris distributorship. They went dealer direct. So went to wor or olaris. e sold to dealers and dealers would sell to the public. wor ed or the or about eight years and retired in . hen was with the distributorship we had about a aha dealers and olaris dealers and or eridian dealers and they were all scattered out all o er las a. bout the only way you can get to the was by airplane. So we had a co pany airplane at that ti e and later, bought a couple o airplanes. Tigers Suffer 45-38 Loss at Home

he Acorn Tigers and the County Line Indians were tied at 19 at the half when they faced each other on the court on Tuesday, October 15th in Acorn. County Line outscored Acorn 26 -19 in the second half to take the 45-38 win.

Aaron Bissell led the Tigers with 14 points, two assists, four rebounds and one steal, while Tyler Bates added eight points, two assists, one rebound and two steals. Leo Jancinto scored four points with one assist and three rebounds, while Frost pitched in with four points and two rebounds. Zack Abbott scored four points with one rebound and one steal, while Daniel Cottrell added four points and one rebound.

he Lady Tigers thumped the County Line Lady Indians 58 -28 Tuesday, October 25th, at Acorn High School.

Acorn j umped out to a 37 -15 lead at the half, and outscored the Lady Indians 2110 down the stretch to earn a victory by 30 points over County Line.

Faith Hill led the Lady Tigers with 20 points, two assists, two rebounds and three steals, while organ agan scored , with two assists, fi e rebounds and eight steals. Tori Barrett added 10 points, one assist, two rebounds and one steal, while Makayla Anderson scored six points, dished out two assists, with two steals and one rebound, Braxlie Strother had two, one assist and one steal. BY RICK WRIGHT • r.wright@mypulsenews.com The Mena Ladycats’ run in the Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament ended in the Semi-Finals round where the eventual State Champion Brookland Ladycats defeated Mena three games to none.

Mena knocked off West Fork 25-11, 25-19 , 25-16 in round one; and thumped tournament host Lonoke 25-16 , 2516 , 25-11 to reach the Semi-Finals.

The Brookland Ladycats defeated Mena 25-18 , 25-22 and 25-15. Brookland went on to defeat Huntsville in the State Championship Game 25-19 , 25-7 , 18 -25 and 25-22. “ Anytime you start off the year, you start thinking about goals and I always tell my team, lets start with the goals of winning a conference championship,” said Ladycat Head Volleyball Coach Brad Lyle. “ Then a District Championship. The State Tournament will take care of itself. One of the things I knew, going in this year, if we pulled off a District Championship we would not be getting the best draw in the State Tournament. I’m not afraid to play good teams, because you know you’ve got to beat the best to be the best, but our side had Brookland who ended up winning the State Championship and then Shiloh Christian on the side with us. Brookland really shouldn’t have been.

Had they won their conference championship, they would have been opposite from us. But, Westside would have been over here with us, and Westside was really good. So, I knew that if we did make it deep into the playoffs we were going to have to play extremely well.” “ We played very, very well to get to the Semi’s,” said Lyle. “ I thought we were playing as well as we had all year. Lono e was a ery uality tea . They were ran ed nu ber one in the state or ost o the year and in the uarter finals, we j ust dismantled them. But we got to that Semi-Final game and we started off pretty good. We got up 6 -2. The game got real fast for us and we didn’t handle some of the situations. I give all the credit to Brookland. They did not give us a chance to catch our breath. That’s what good teams do. We’ve done that to many a team this year.” “ First game it j ust got away from us,” said Lyle. “ In the second game it started off bad and then we started making our comeback. For about a 10 or 15 point stretch we played like we were capable and we were the better team. But, when we weren t able to pull out ga e two, that really apped our confidence and Brookland j ust didn’t let us out of it. Would I have given up a chance for a District Championship to be on the opposite side of the bracket and maybe have a really good chance of making the Finals? No, that’s j ust not how I’m wired.” “ This team had a great year, they achieved way more than 9 0 % of the people out there gave them a chance to, and I’m not happy with coming up short, but they did a great j ob,” said Lyle.

It was an incredible year and six Ladycats will be graduating. However, Mena has a wealth of potential coming up from the Junior Ladycats, plus a lot of these girls gained a lot of experience this year. “ Y es, we’ve got a lot coming back,” said Lyle. “ And we’ve got a lot of kids that have been waiting their turn, kinda like so e o these girls did. Then we e got an in u o ninth graders that showed great potential, so we’ll make us another run next year.”

Mary Poppins was traveling home, but due to worsening weather, she decided to stop at a hotel for the night. She approached the receptionist and asked for a room for the night.

“Certainly madam,” he replied courteously.

“Is the restaurant open still?” inquired Mary.

“Sorry, no,” came the reply, “but room service is available all night. Would you care to select something from this menu?”

Mary smiled and took the menu and perused it. “Hmm, I would like cauliflower January 6, 2016 cheese “Certainly, madam,” he replied.

“And can I have breakfast in bed?” asked Mary politely.

The receptionist nodded and smiled.

“In that case, I would love a couple of poached eggs, please,” Mary mused.

After confirming the order, Mary signed in and went up to her room for the night.

The night passed uneventfully and the next morning Mary came down early to check out. The same guy was still on the desk.

“Morning, madam. Sleep well?”

“Yes, thank you,” Mary replied.

“Food to your liking?”

“Well, I have to say the cauliflower cheese was exceptional, I don’t think I have had better. Shame about the eggs, though....they really weren’t that nice at all,” replied Mary truthfully.

“Oh...well, perhaps you could contribute these thoughts to our Guest Comments Book. We are always looking to improve our service and would value your opinion,” said the receptionist.

“OK, I will...thanks!” replied Mary....who checked out, then scribbled a comment into the book. Waving, she left to continue her journey.

Curious, the receptionist picked up the book to see the comment Mary had written.
