Answer 1 - The city is in a great financial state. That comes from good fiscal management which will continue when I’m elected. I’ve managed the biggest budget in the city and know how to manage budgets efficiently.

Mena City Council lev- Mobile Food ies 2018 millage rate Pantry to be The Mena City Council met in its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, November 20.

New business on the agenda was consideration of an ordinance to levy the 2018 millage rate on real estate and personal property. The ordinance was passed and approved remaining at the current 2 mil rate.

The council passed an ordinance

for the annual Arkansas Municipal League Accidental Death and Dismemberment Plan for all elected officials and department heads and also approved a salary adjustment for all full-time employees.

Mena Mayor George McKee said that the city always tried to provide the salary adjustments, which average around $600, if the city has the funds available.

Elks host Veterans’ Angel Tree’ for holidays The Mena Elks Lodge is hosting a Veterans’ Angel Tree this holiday season.

Boxes of food and bowls of chili will be given to the public on Sat., Dec. 1 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the American Legion Post 249, located at 177 Hwy. 278 East in Wickes.

The Mobile Food Pantry provided by River Valley Regional Food Bank will be on site to distribute a box of food items and the American Legion will be providing the Chili Luncheon.

There are no eligibility requirements for receiving the food from the mobile pantry or the hot meal from the American Legion; clients will receive food items on a first come, first serve basis.

Arrested was David M. Fraser, 50, of Mena, on two Warrants for Failure to Comply with a Court Order and three Warrants for Failure to Appear.

Arrested by a trooper with the Arkansas State Police was Daniel J. Proctor, 35, of Nashville, GA, on a Hold for a government agency.

November 25, 2018 Report of a disturbance led to a 16-year-old male being issued Juvenile Citations for Domestic Battery and Disorderly Conduct. The juvenile was released to the custody of a parent/guardian.

Polk County Detention Center Jail Population: 20 Incarcerated Inmates, with 3 Inmates currently on the Waiting List for a State Facility.

Mena Police Department Report November 18, 2018 Hana Orr, 31, of Kirby was charged with theft of property (shoplifting) after officers responded to a call at a local convenience store.

November 19, 2018 A Mena woman reported that she had received information that someone had used her identity to have been used in another state.

Case is pending further investigation.

Officers responded to a call at a local retail store regarding an unruly customer who had since left the business. No charges have been filed at this time.

November 20, 2018 Report was made of someone taking items, including televisions from a local residence. Case is pending further investigation.

November 21 and 22, 2018 Employees at a local convenience store reported a gas-skip.

Case is pending location and interview of suspect.

Debra Jean Gee, 57 of Mena was charged with theft of property after a call from employees at a local retail store.

November 23 and 24, 2018 A local woman reported that someone unknown to her had followed her and was acting suspiciously. Case is pending.

Report was made of a problem with custody of a minor child. The child is now with the custodial parent, and parties were advised to seek legal assistance.

Reflections From Faith and History Giving Us the Best Medicine-By Jeff Olson Throughout her history, America has been a unique and exceptional nation in many ways. I believe that one aspect of this can be seen in the role humor has played, not just within personal relationships but also on a broader scale in permeating our culture through literature, art, music, and entertainment.

During good times and bad, we have been able to laugh at others and at ourselves, helping to keep us a balanced and stable nation.

We've been fortunate to have gifted people filling a special place in our society in leading the humor; not just humor for the sake of laughs but humor which could

produce a chuckle, stir our imagination and intellect, and leave us feeling better about ourselves and our country.

Such artistry has helped us to persevere and keep it all in perspective. Allow me to briefly highlight two of the very best who were born in November and whose influence has spanned many generations for a century and a half: Mark Twain and Will Rogers.

Mark Twain was born (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri.

In his early years, he traveled all over America and worked at various jobs including riverboat pilot,

journalist, lecturer, entrepreneur and inventor.

Twain's writing talent lead him to become a noted author of American fiction whose writing style was among the first to be considered originally and distinctly American.

Among his most noted works are two major classics of American literature: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

The fictional locales of both were inspired by Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. He is considered the greatest humorist of his age, but his humor was evident not only in his writing but also through the extensive lecturing he did.

He was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Among the subjects of his humor, politicians were a pop-

ular target as he once quipped, "There is no distinctly American criminal class except Congress."

Mark Twain died of a heart attack in 1910.

Will Rogers was born (William Penn Adair Rogers) on November 4, 1879 near Oologah, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).

Rogers was a drifter in his early years, living life as a working cowboy and as a trick rider and roper with Wild West shows in America and in various places around the world.

He is still considered as one of the greatest ropers of all time. It was only several years after Mark Twain's death that Rogers rose to prominence, first in the Ziegfeld Follies and then as a noted humorist, columnist, radio personality, and actor.

To this day, he is perhaps most remembered for his famous line, "...I never met a man I didn't like."

As did Mark Twain, Rogers liked to pick on politicians.

He often commented that he didn't need to write jokes since he could just watch Congress and report the facts. Along with aviator Wiley Post, Will Rogers was killed in an airplane crash in Alaska in 1935.

Remembering Hearts Forever to host Candlelighting Losing a child, grandchild or a sibling changes the way daily life is lived, much less how the holidays are celebrated. Generally the holiday season magnifies the feelings of that loss.

If the holidays are hard for you, you are not alone. Remembering Hearts Forever is a local group made up of families that have lost a child, grandchild or a grandchild at any age and any cause.

Remembering Hearts Forever is participating in a world-wide candle lighting ceremony on Sun., Dec. 9 to honor the loved one missing from our families. A candle will be lit and the name of loved ones will be said.

A slide show consisting of photographs to remember those lost will be presented and light refreshments will be served after the candle lighting.

Most importantly, it will be a time of fellowship with people that truly understand the hardship of daily life after losing a family member.

The Candle Lighting will be held in the back of the Union Bank building on Sun., Dec. 9. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to the event.

You may bring a picture or a memento of your lost loved one to share with others. A table will be set up just for these items.

Anyone wishing to speak during the event or wanting to submit a picture for the slide show is welcome to do so,

should contact a member of the group.

Weekly Publication DR. WILLIAM THEODORE (TED) SHULTZ Dr. William Theodore (Ted) Shultz age 89 of Mena, Arkansas passed away Sun-day, November 18, 2018 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Dr. Shultz was born March 19, 1929 in Richland.

Iowa to the late Fay Bond Shultz and the late Helen McLin Shultz. He was happily married to Ruth Mae Bailey Shultz since August 12, 1951.

Ted graduated from the University of Iowa and earned his Medical Degree in June 1953. He went active in the United States Air Force and proudly served his coun-try as a flight surgeon.

These duties included being an advisor to General Robert S. Israel. He did his Medical residence from 1956-1959 in Des Moines, Iowa. He became a Board-Certified Radiologist.

He practiced 26 years in Marhshalltown, Iowa, Eldora, Iowa, and at the Iowa Vet-erans Home.

In 1985 to 1990 he practiced at Mena Regional Health System. From 1990-1996 he practiced in Webster City, Iowa.

Ted and his wife Ruth retired here in Mena, in July 1996. He was a member of the RSNA, ACR, AMA, American Legion and an Honorary member of Iowa Medical Society. He was a member of Grace Bible Church.

He loved to read, enjoyed watching movies on tv, hunting and fishing with family and friends.

He enjoyed being outdoors, traveling and his dogs. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Mae Shultz of Mena, Arkansas. Son Gary Shultz and wife Susan. Grandchildren Gary Lee Shultz and wife Kristen, Melissa Egli and husband Paul, Morgan Williams. Great-grandchildren Hayden and Violet, Hunter, Bailey and Taylor, Riley, Andrew and Pierce. Son Michael Shultz and wife Judy.

Grandchildren Joshua and wife Joanna, Benjamin and wife Amanda. Daughter Karen Purvis and husband Rod. Grandchildren Connor Purvis, Rodney (Braden) Purvis. Son Keith Shultz and wife Miranda. Sister Grace Jeanne Leathers and husband Gilbert. Nieces and nephews Steve, Scott, Ashley and Shayne Gilbert.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fay and Helen Shultz and granddaugh-ter, Bree Ann Purvis.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at Grace Bi-ble Church with Dr. Lamar Austin officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of the Beasley Wood Funeral Home of Mena.

Family and friends visitation will be Tuesday, November 20, 2018, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Beasley Wood.

Pallbearers will be Conner Purvis, Rodney (Braden) Purvis, Paul Egli, Andrew Schulz, Jeff Ulmer and Leon Stephens.

VIRGINIA ANDERSON SMITH Virginia Anderson Smith age 88 of Mena, Arkansas passed away Wednesday, No-vember 21, 2018 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.

Virginia was born on October 26, 1930 in Brule, Nebraska to the late Amos An-derson and the late Calista Carpenter Cerreto. She was married to the late Homer Smith until his passing in 2014. She was a loving homemaker to her fami-ly. Virginia was a faithful and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her children Homer “Skip” Smith and wife Vickie of Mena, Arkansas; Richard “Frank” Smith and wife Glynda of Chickasha, Oklahoma; Ste-phen Smith of Plunkettville, Oklahoma; Patricia Swierzowski and husband David of New York. Grandchildren Stephanie, Eric, Mindy, Bradley, Christina, Michelle, Kimberly, Lori, Amos and Calista. Twenty-eight great-grandchildren. Sisters Lois Barker, Rebecca Roberts and Mary Ann Simonds.

She was preceded in death by her parents Amos Anderson and Calista Cerreto, husband Homer Adam Smith, and brothers John Anderson, Harry Anderson, Har-old Anderson and an uncle Arthur Carpenter.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 26, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Beasley Wood Chapel with Brother Steve Ellison officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery under the direction of the Beasley Wood Funeral Home of Mena.

Family and friends visitation will be Sunday, November 25, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Beasley Wood.

Pallbearers will be Amos Smith, Chris Vaughn, Jose Rodriguez’ Vadez, and Ra-ven Rodriguez.

BETTY JEAN WARD Betty Jean Ward, age 80, of Mena, Arkansas, died, Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at the Mena Regional Health System.

She was born on Thursday, Novem-ber 25, 1937 to George Silas and Sarah Ella Atchley Weatherby in Mena, Arkan-sas.

Betty loved her family and spending time with her children and grandchil-dren. She was of the Baptist faith. Some of Betty’s hobbies included spending time working on genealogy and crocheting. She worked as an LPN at Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab for fifteen years before retiring in 2000. Betty liked to lis-ten to Gospel music and spend time with her beloved dog, Ozzy. She was a mem-ber of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution. Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her

husband, Floyd Richard Ward and her brother Johnny Weatherby.

Betty is survived by her five sons, Michael Ward, Gary Ward, Keith Ward, Jason Ward all of Mena and Brian Ward of Loogootee, Indiana; two daughters, Karen Ward of Mena and Ellen Thacker of County Line, Oklahoma; her sister, Edith McAllister of Fayetteville, Arkansas; eighteen grandchildren, twelve great grand-child; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be Monday, November 19, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home Chapel in Mena. Interment will follow in the Rocky Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funer-al Home Chapel in Mena. Arrangements are entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena, Arkansas.

DONALD RAY THOMAS SR. Donald Ray Thomas Sr., age 85, of Mena, died Thursday, November 22, 2018 at his home. He was born on Tuesday, October 3, 1933 to Morris Sheppard and Bu-lah Lou McKeever in Board Camp, Arkansas.

Donald was a hardworking, honest Christian man. He proudly served in the Unit-ed States Army. Caring for his animals on a daily basis was always at the top of his list and he enjoyed watching Nascar, his favorite driver being the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. Donald adored his wife and family and enjoyed every minute he could spend with them. Donald was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a great friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Susan Lawson and Rose Thomas and one brother, Junior Thomas.

Donald is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beverly Thomas of Mena; three sons, Donald Thomas Jr. of Mena, Edward Thomas of Kingsville, Missouri, and Timo-thy Thomas of Sedalia, Missouri; two daughters, Angela Thomas of Jasper, Texas, and Karin Lidberg of Ft. on Saturday, December 21, 1929 to William and Nancy Elizabeth Ketcher Russell in Miami, Oklahoma.

Dorothy loved her family and spending time with them. She was a homemaker and loved to sew for her family and cook. Some of her family’s favorite dishes were her cornbread dressing at Thanksgiving and her chocolate gravy and hot biscuits in the morning. Dorothy loved going to church and was of the Pentecostal faith. Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy Dollarhyde; five sons, Donald Dollarhyde, Mark Dollarhyde, Roy Dollarhyde Jr., Ross Dollarhyde, and Jody Dollarhyde; two daughters, Nancy lane and Rebecca Dollarhyde; her seven brothers and seven sisters.

BETTYE CAROL RODRIGUEZ Bettye Carol Rodriguez, age 77 of Mena, Arkansas, died, Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab. She was born on Monday, April 7, 1941 to Hershal Everett and Edna Josephine Stone Rusher in Butterfield, Arkan-sas.

Bettye was Godly woman and attended the Dallas Avenue Baptist Church. She worked as a surgical technician at the Mena Regional Health System for thirty years before retiring. EDDIE GENE MARTIN Eddie Gene Martin, age 60, of Mena, Arkansas, died peacefully Thursday, November 22, 2018 at his home. He was born on Sunday, October 12, 1958 to Donald Gene and Margaret Martin in Carthage, Missouri.

Eddie worked for Michel’s Pipeline, long time union worker out of Labor Local 534 and McGraw Construction. He was always a diligent hard worker. Eddie built a beautiful house for his wife, whom he loved deeply, to enjoy their retired years together. He enjoyed mowing his yard, play-ing on his tractor, hunting and fishing.

Most of all, he loved his children and grandchildren and took great joy in every moment spent with them. Eddie was a loving husband, father, grandfa-ther, brother and a great friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Connie Martin; and one grandson, Logen Martin.

Sybil was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

CHARLES EDWARD LAGOY Charles Edward Lagoy, age 59, of Cove, Arkansas, died Wednesday, No-vember 14, 2018 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on Thursday, December 4, 1958 to Louis Elvorton and Betty Wilburn Lagoy in Helena, Arkansas.

Charles served in the United States Air Force stationed in Turkey as a se-curity specialist. He believed in honesty, and taking care of your responsi-bilities. Charles worked as a welder and was incredibly proud to buy a home, a new car, and provide for his family. He liked to listen to Classic Rock and was an avid collector of cards, comic books, and all sorts of other memorabilia. In his free time, he enjoyed anything out in nature like riding four wheelers and fishing. He loved his family with all his heart and was proud of all of them. Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfa-ther, brother, uncle and a great friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

VA PLANS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MEETING FOR FRI., DEC. 7 IN THE OUACHITA CENTER ON THE CAMPUS OF UA-RICH MOUNTAIN A Community Engagement Partnership Meeting has been scheduled for Fri., Dec. 7 beginning at 11 a.m. in the Ouachita Center of UA Rich Mountain.

The meeting has been planned by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs Suicide Prevention Program and is open to all members of the community.

Suicide has become the tenth leading cause of death for military veterans in Arkansas and the rate is rising. The VA is asking for members of the community to help them combat this crisis and other issues our veterans face on a daily basis.

According to Peer Support Specialist Dale Schultz, CPS, the best way for the VA to know the needs within a community is to establish a community panel that consists of 10-15 people. The panel will decide what the needs of the community are, present them and the VA will help by standing with the panel to

get the needs of the community met.

Life does not have to be so hard for our returning veterans and suicides can be prevented but it will take a joint effort of the community and the VA to get programs in place.

‘Medal of Honor’ Essay winners announced Students at Cossatot River High School recently competed in Mr. Mike Wilson’s Medal of Honor Essay Contest that was held to raise awareness of the heroic sacrifices veterans have made to ensure our freedoms.

The subject of the essay was 2018 Medal of Honor recipient U.S.A.F. Sgt. John A. Chapman.

Winners were announced during an assembly held on Fri., Nov. 9. Winners of the contest were: Manuel Esquivel-Amador, receiving a $100 Union Bank Grand Prize; Kelci Frachiseur, receiving a $50 Freedom Pharmacy Award;

and Jackson Day, receiving a $25 RE/Max & Farm Bureau award.

A winner was also selected from each grade. The grade entry winners each received $10. Edwyn Luna, Lyniya Treadway-Rundel & Ethan Younblood all tied on the seventh grade level.

Eighth grade winner was Melissa Oglesby; there was a tie between Baylee Davis & Jacob Richardson in ninth grade; Alishia Thompson was tenth grade winner; another tie between Katelyn Cox and Dylan Whorton in eleventh grade; and Brandon Williams won at the twelfth grade level.

I’ve served as a patrolman, detective, K9 handler, four years as the Police Chief, and have managed Mena’s largest budget/staff. We’ve received upwards of $50,000.00 in grants and recently received approximately $60,000 worth of equipment from the Secret Service. I will continue that grant writing process at city hall.

14-YEAR-OLD BOXER WINS FIRST MATCH Fourteen-year-old Kathryn “Kat” Davison of Pine Ridge won her first boxing match on Saturday, November 17.

Davison competed at the Fort Smith Fight Night, held at the Evans Boys and Girls Club and hosted by the Fort Smith Boxing Association.

Weighing in at 107 pounds, Davison’s first match was against a

more experienced boxer from Gillispe Boxing in Conway.

Davison received a well deserved nod from the judges due to the constant pressure of her opponent.

Davison is the daughter of John and Zieka Davison. She boxes on The Attitude Angels Boxing Team out of The Defenders Boxing Club of Mena.

SANCHEZ SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT TO RUN XC FOR UARM BUCKS

Isael Sanchez a senior at De Queen High School will be competing on the Bucks collegiate cross country running team beginning in the fall of 2019.

Sanchez signed with UA - Rich Mountain on Friday, November 16th.

Coach Samantha Shores of UA - Rich

Mountain described Isael Sanchez as a team player who excels in both academics and athletics.

Sanchez says he enjoys the social aspects of the sport but also likes beating out the competition during races.

Coach Shores noted that elevating

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. this Sat., Dec. 1 with the annual Christmas Parade of Lights organized by the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce.

The theme for this year’s parade is “Favorite Movies of Christmas.”

Immediately following the parade at 7 p.m.

The Mena A&P Commission will host their Christmas Festival at

Janssen Park.

Lana Gail & Gail Force will be providing musical entertainment from 7-7:30 p.m.

Geography Bee to be held at Mena Schools Thousands of schools are competing in this year’s contest from all across the United States and the five U.S. territories. Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world are also competing.

The Mena School District will be holding competition Thurs., Nov. 29 at the Mena High School Performing Arts Center located at 1200 Dallas Ave. beginning at 8:15.

The champion of the Mena School District National Geography Bee will advance to the next level of competition, which is a qualifying test to determine state competitors.

Up to 100 of the top test scorers in each state become eligible to compete in their State GeoBee.

The winners of the State GeoBees receive an all-expenses-paid trip to National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., next May to participate in the GeoBee national championship, competing for cash prizes, scholarships, and all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galapagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II. The national Geographic Society developed the National Geographic GeoBee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge amongst young people in the United States. 120 million students have participated in the GeoBee after more than
