Fire Engulfs Pinemore Shavings Facility (MENA) Fire crews were on the scene of a large fire at Pinemoore Shavings on Highway 375 West. Upon arrival fire crews found multiple structures fully engulfed. Polk County Sheriff Scott and Mena Police shut down Hwy 375 in both directions and side streets to the road. Large flames could be seen for quite a distance. Sheriff Sawyer said that there were no known injuries. Mena Fire Department, Shady Grove, Potter and Intermountain Regional Airport crews assisted at the scene. According to Mena Fire Chief Steve Egger, no cause has been determined on how the fire had started. The investigation is ongoing to determine that cause and the dollar loss to the business.

Road and Sidewalk Projects Gain Approval from City Council (MENA) Members of Mena City Council reviewed bids received on the 2019 sidewalk improvement program. Of the three bids received, one was disqualified for lack of required information needed. The other two bids came in a t $45,542, submitted by Tri-County Services and $46,227.10, submitted by Glenaire Construction. Council decided to go with the low bid submitted by Tri-County

Services for the project that will see new sidewalks in various portions of the city. Council is awaiting approval of a much larger grant to replace sidewalks on Janssen Avenue between 4th Street and Cherry Streets in the city. Council also approved the additional expenditure of $4273.68 in regards to the resurfacing and repair work done to Fairgrounds Road. The road work was a cost-

share project with Polk County. City leaders also approved amending the 2019 budget. The basis of the amending of the budget is a typical procedure, shifting monies that were initially anticipated to another line item. The overall budget anount doesn’t change with the re-allocation of monies.

(MENA) With the start of the new school year last week, a new law that affects drivers in school zones has created some confusion. Act 738 approved this year by the Arkansas State Legislature does not allow for the use of cell phones within school zones for any reasons, with one exception… if the vehicle is in park and not moving. A school zone is located near a school building within 300 feet of a school building, that has children present. Mena City Chief of Police Tommy Stueart talked with KENA Radio about the new law. The Oaks at Mena Officially Closed Saturday Night (MENA) The Oaks at Mena Assisted Living Center, located at 1341 Mena Street will officially closed at Midnight, Saturday evening. A donated items yard sale was held on Friday at the facility and the last remaining patients were transferred to other facilities. Approximately twenty-five patients and twenty-five employees were displaced due to the closure. The closure is being blamed on the inadequacies of reimbursement monies from Medicare and Medicaid for the low-income patients at the facility. The Arkansas Development Finance Agency will take possession of the property since the facility closed. No word on what will become of the property.

Reflections From Faith and History Honoring Veterans -by Jeff Olson America recognizes and honors her veterans in a multitude of ways throughout each year, with such special days of observance as Veterans Day and Memorial Day, and also in other national and local celebrations. However, there are organizations among us which serve our veterans not only at special times of the year but throughout the year. And, they often do this under the radar of the public eye and therefore perhaps unnoticed and unappreciated much of the time. One such organization is the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or VFW. The VFW was organized in Denver, Colorado 106 years ago this week, August 18, 1913. However, its roots can be traced back one hundred twenty years to 1899 when the veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to help meet veterans' needs which the wars created in their lives. Many came back home wounded and/or sick. There was no medical care or other crucial provisions for them, thus they were left to care for themselves. In their plight, some of these veterans banded together and through some of these groups came to be the VFW of the United States. Initially, chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania. Since then, the VFW has been instrumental as a voice in accomplishing much for veterans. Chief among them include: establishing the Veteran's Administration (VA), creating the GI Bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange and for vet-

erans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome, the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st century, expanding educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, and improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. The VFW helped to fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II, and Women in Military Service memorials, and it also contributed to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010. As one of the largest, if not the largest, combat veterans organization in the U.S., the VFW mission is to "honor the dead by helping the living." Today's more than 1.6 million strong VFW membership and its Auxiliary donate millions of volunteer hours in community service, from working in blood drives to funding college scholarships. They also promote citizenship, patriotism, and interest in American History through school programs, essay contests, and education about the American flag. I was honored to be a participant in their Voice of Democracy essay contest when I was a high school senior. Today, the VFW remains in the fight for America's veterans and their families through important issues such as reducing the VA claims backlog and preventing reduction in veteran's benefits. As the son of a disabled American veteran, I can attest to the valuable work the VFW has done over the years, and I am thankful for its service as I am for that of other veteran's organizations. Airport Runway Project Proceeds (MENA) Members of Mena City Council approved an agreement with the United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration on a grant allocating $149,400 to be used for the design phase of Runway 17-35’s Surface Rehabilitation at the Mena Intermountain Municipal

Mena Police Department Report August 11, 2019 Joni McKee, 38, of Mena was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. The arrest followed a traffic stop. August 12, 2019 A local woman reported that several items were stolen from her vehicle while it was parked at a local business. Besides personal items, there was a handgun taken as well. After speaking with a witness, officers were able to identify a suspect. Case is pending location and interview of suspect. August 13, 2019 Officers responded to a call at a local business regarding an individual who had become agitated and started throwing items in the store. Employees at a local nursing facility reported that someone had broken the knob on an entry door. No suspects at this time. Report was made of someone stealing several items from a local retail store. Case pending review of surveillance video. August 14 & 15, 2019 William R. Pate, 47, of Mena was charged with possession of methamphetamine or cocaine with intent to deliver, failure to use a signal, and driving on a suspended driver’s license. The arrest followed a traffic stop. Patricia Miner, 48, of Mena was served an outstanding warrant from Mena Police for an original charge of theft of property. Israel Flores, 26, of Fayetteville was served an outstanding warrant. August 16, 2019 David Lee Maleski, 47, of Smithville, Oklahoma, was served an outstanding warrant. August 17, 2019 Employees at a local fast food restaurant reported receiving a counterfeit $100.00 bill. Case is pending.

(MENA) The members of the Mountain Meadow Chapter 22 of the Hatﬁeld Order of the Eastern Star and the Mena Chapter 243 presented donations of various food items to the Nations Arkansas National Guard Armory in Mena on Wednesday morning. The donated food will be used for a military veteran family in the Polk County area that is struggling with providing essential food for the family of four. Sargeants Chris Stripling and Mike Inglis from the Mena armory accepted the food on behalf of their brethren veterans. Later Wednesday morning, both chapters presented blankets and stuffed animals to the Mena Fire Department and the City of Mena. According to Mena Fire Chief Steve Egger, the department is “very appreciative and grateful for the donations and can help ease the trauma involved” where a family encounters tragedy or a major setback in their lives.

Lucille S. Self, age 80 of Mena, Arkansas passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019 in

Bette Ann McRee, age 86 passed away Thursday, August 15, 2019 in Norman, Oklahoma. Bette Ann Watkins was born November 10, 1932 to Edward and Helen Watkins in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Raised in Mena, she was a 1950 graduate of Mena High School and attended Stephens College and the University of Arkansas. She was a talented musician and composer, playing both the organ and piano and was the organist for the First Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years. She composed and published two contatas based on scriptures: The Beatitudes and Savior of Love, both of which were performed in Mena and throughout the country. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Ben Edward Redman and step-son Jim McRee. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth McRee of the home; daughters: Jennie Kuhnke and husband Tom of Centerton, Arkansas, Tracie Bissell and husband Teddy of Mena, Arkansas, and Suzanne Harris and husband Randy of Norman, Oklahoma; step-son, Robert Wilson of Bella Vista, Arkansas; step-daughter, Cathy Hancock and husband Mark of Bella Vista, Arkansas; grandchildren: Ashlee and Jason Lance of Springdale, Arkansas, Edward Redman of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jessica Carter of Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, Jacob Harris of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lily and Trevor Richardson of Norman, Oklahoma, Laura Harris of Norman, Oklahoma, Taylor Kuhnke and Matthew Kuhnke of Centerton, Arkansas, and Faith and Ben Hundley and Travis Hancock of Fayetteville; and great grandchildren: Nathan Chilson, Savannah Crass and Madeleine Hancock . Edwin “Bud” Benjamin Keith Jr., age 72, of Mena, Arkansas died Thursday, August 15, 2019 at his home. He was born on Friday, August 8, 1947 to Edwin Benjamin Sr. and Elsie Lou Fountain Keith in Magnolia, Arkansas. Bud was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Mena and his religious service was very important to him. He ran multiple businesses in his life, from janitorial services to landscaping, and worked as a game warden and USPS rural mail carrier for many years. Bud was a gentle soul who was always kind and optimistic. He truly believed the best of everyone. He enjoyed fishing, animal watching, chasing storms, and anything outdoors. Bud liked all types of music, but he loved Bluegrass. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, and there was never a doubt how much he loved his wife and family. He always liked to joke with his kids and grandkids, using his clever wordplay to make them laugh. Bud was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a great friend and will be missed by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents. Bud is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Cathy Jo Keith of Mena; two daughters and sons in law, Angela and Chad Dixon of Boles, Arkansas, and Kimberley and Chris Carson of Wickes; two sisters and brothers in law, Dottie Lou and Mike Buffington of Fayetteville, and Elizabeth Ann and Glenn Nichols of Pittsburg, Kansas; six grandchildren, Hayden Dixon, Zachery Taylor, Saleen Dixon, David Carson, Michael Carson, and Jeremy Carson; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Lucille Evans; husband, Gordon Self; son, Russell Self; 1 great grandson; 1 great granddaughter; 2 brothers; and 1 sister. Funeral service was held Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Brother Donnie Jewell officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hatfield, Arkansas under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Salaries For Secretaries More Than Expected (LITTLE ROCK) The fifteen members of the Governor’s cabinet team got larger raises than what was expected, that’s according to Governor Asa Hutchinson’s office in an announcement on Friday. The heads of two state agencies received larger salaries that began starting July 1 than the pay levels Gov. Asa Hutchinson's office announced they would receive when the governor revealed his picks to be secretaries of 15 Cabinet-level departments. The errors were corrected sometime last week after being addressed to the Govern’r’s chief spokesman. Funds will not be recouped from the mistake, but the salaries will be at the reduced level moving forward," he said. The Republican governor's reorganization reduced the number of agencies reporting to him from 42 to 15, effective July 1. July 1 also was the start of fiscal 2020 and when the higher salaries took effect. The annual salary of Amy Fecher increased from $125,671 to $162,153 with her promotion. She went from a dual position -- executive vice president for operations at the Arkansas Economic Development Commission and chief transformation officer for the governor -- to secretary of the Department of Transformation and Shared Services, according to state records. Fecher is one of 58 state employees -beyond those who work at the state's colleges and universities -- who received pay raises of at least $10,000 in fiscal 2020, according to state records. Hutchinson's office said May 22 that Fecher's salary would be increased to $155,916 a year. The annual pay for Nate Todd increased from $122,954 to $134,640 when he went from director of the Department of Veterans Affairs to secretary of the reorganized agency, according to state records. Hutchinson's office said May 22 that his salary would be increased to $132,000. "The Governor directed that any merit pay be included in the final salaries of all secretaries, not in addition to," said his spokesman, J.R. Davis, in a written statement. "Due to human error, two Secretaries, Fecher and Todd, received merit pay in addition to their new salaries."

together is miraculous. I’ve been involved in car shows as an attendee and participant since I was about 10 years old. I learned long ago that most car shows last only a year or two before they are given up on from lack of volunteers, sponsors, local interest or even participants. That Mr. Campbell was able to make the Rod Run a success for decades is a testament to his vision and perseverance. A vision now carried on by the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce. There is a massive amount of work that goes into putting on this event and it begins the previous year just after the Rod Run ends. Kudos should go out to the Chamber and volunteers for their work on this yearly project.

By Jamie Hammack They come from all over the region, and they’re headed here. Hundreds of them. Rolling down interstates and two lane black top roads. Paint glaring in the mid-day sun. V8 engines whining and singing out exhaust notes. There’s nothing green about them. You won’t ﬁnd an electric car driven by a millennial with a man bun in his hair in this group. These are cars and trucks from an era when Detroit built automobiles with style, aggression, and under the hoods were massive cubic inches of masculine toxicity. The way it should be. And this weekend they descend on Mena for the 44th annual Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run. As we all know, Mark Campbell began this get together of gear heads and he organized it every year until his passing. What he accomplished in holding

Let’s get back to the cars. If you’ve never been to the Rod Run or haven’t been in a few years you should go. As the Lum and Abner Festival Car Show is mostly locals, the Rod Run brings people from farther away to show off their classics. The cars attending now are much more varied than they were back in the early days of the Rod Run. Nowadays at the Rod Run you’re as likely to see a 1974 Plymouth Duster or Chevy K5 Blazer as you are a 32 Ford Lowboy or 57 Chevy. And to me that’s the beauty of today’s Rod Run. With time, what’s considered a classic car changes. You know what they say about variety.

Friday at 5:30 many of the cars will parade through town down Mena Street and take their places on the north side of the tracks for folks to get a look at the cars. At 9am on Saturday the big show starts atop Rich Mountain at Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Its one of the most beautiful settings for a car show you’ll ever see. At 4pm the show on the mountain ends and a poker run begins for the Rod Runners as they make their way back to Mena. Beginning at 7pm Saturday the cars line up on the south side of the tracks for the awards ceremony and street dance. See, it’s a lot and it’s good ol’ family fun!

That variety makes the show more enjoyable. As different types of cars are now considered classics it brings in more spectators. Cars people my age group grew up with in the 80’s are now classics. Ok, maybe not that 86’ Chrysler Le Baron your dad dropped you off at school in, but that 84’ IROC Camaro the cool kid with a mullet cruised the four lane in is a classic. More spectators for the areas yearly showcase event will mean a healthy event that will come back year after year. That and participants! You have to have cars to have a show. So with the out of towners who drive all the way to Mena to show off their rides, so do locals bring theirs out of storage. And please folks, pay to register your car. Mena Bearcats Enjoy A Productive Red-Black Scrimmage

(MENA) The Mena Bearcats enjoyed a productive scrimmage on Friday night at Bob Carver / Bearcat Stadium. The Bearcats annual Red vs. Black game showed new Head Coach Craig Bentley and his staff what areas needed improvement before a scheduled scrimmage tonight on the road with Class 5A Magnolia. The scrimmage provided a sneak preview on the 2019 Mena Bearcats season. A lot of passing, running and outstanding blocking were witnessed and special teams play was showcased too.

Bentley was really pleased with how expected Starting Quarterback Max Montgomery has progressed and is connecting with his outstanding receiving corps of athletes. Marc David Wilson has shown great poise and is expected to take on more of a leadership role with his teammates. Toward the end of the Red vs. Black scrimmage, Bentley was quite impressed with how the kicking team were nailing ﬁeld goals and placing punts effectively. With last Friday’s scrimmage, Bentley and his assistant coaches were able to de-

termine who will more than likely land starting jobs on the Bearcat squad. All of the regular season and post season games will be broadcast on Classic Hits 105.3 FM – KQOR, with Dr. Phillip Wilson and Todd Aynes. The recent Bearcat Scrimmage game on Friday night, only required a donation of Gatorade or a box of detergent to enter the event. The Bearcat faithful ended up providing quite a load of both for the football team. Head Coach Craig Bentley was quite amazed at the substantial donations given to the program, that will allow the staff to keep the student – athletes hydrated properly and also keeping the uniforms clean throughout the season. UA - Rich Mountain Held A “Meet the Bucks” Event at Bearcat Stadium

(MENA) The new era of University of Arkansas – Rich Mountain athletics got started in an exciting way on Thursday evening at Bob Carver / Bearcat Stadium in Mena. A tail-gating like atmosphere filled the air as honorary cheerleaders from Acorn, Cossatot River and Mena High Schools assembled together with many awesome cheers for the university and the various sports teams. Several hundred fans filled the seats

at the stadium for the event. The introduction of athletes from the Cross Country and Soccer teams were made as well. Following the introductions, fans were treated to an interesting and exciting scrimmage game between the Gray and Red Mens Soccer teams. In addition, many businesses in downtown Mena also decorated the front of their locations in support of “Painting the Town Red” in preparation for the event.

Bucks Soccer Starts Era With A Pair Of Victories (BATESVILLE) The University of Arkansas – Rich Mountain athletic programs got a memorable pair of victories for the Bucks Mens and Womens soccer teams. The womens team edged out Lyons College of Batesville with a 2-1 victory. Madison Zamudio scored both goals for the Lady Bucks. (MENA) The UA – Rich Mountain Mens Soccer hit the road on Saturday for their ﬁrst regular season match against Northeast Texas and fell 11 to 2. The Men’s Soccer team was also in action Sunday afternoon with a match at Bearcat Stadium in Mena against the Ouachita Baptist Tigers, however a lightening delay for 45 minutes halted the match and when action resumed, an overtime period proved to be fruitless as well, as both teams failed to score and resulting

Child Struck While Going To School (MENA) A 12 year old Mena student was struck while riding his bike in between traffic on Wednesday morning at the intersection of Lincoln Street and Dallas Avenue. The accident happened around 8:00am. According to a release by Mena Police, witness statements advised that the vehicle was going West on Dallas Avenue and the bicycle was going North on Lincoln Street. The bicycle failed to yield, while crossing Dallas Avenue, and was struck by the vehicle.

The man that was driving the vehicle was uninjured. The 12-year-old boy, that was riding the bicycle, was injured with a broken leg and was transported to the Mena Regional Health System, prior to being transported to the Arkansas Childrens Hospital in Little Rock. Police want to advise all drivers that the use of a cell phone in a school zone, is now strictly against the law, with the passage of Act 738 passed by the Arkansas State Legislature.

Horatio Man Killed In Tractor Trailer Overturn Near Wickes (WICKES) A 34 year old Horatio man was killed in a motor vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 71 South on Thursday morning near Wickes. Jonathan C. Smith was travelling South on US 71 when he drifted to the left and crossed the center line and tried to regain control and overturned in the process.

The 2010 Mack semi was hauling a load of chickens, thus creating an extensive cleanup of the roadway and surrounding properties. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene and it was the 286th fatality in Arkansas during 2019 alone.

The City of Mena turned 123 years old on Monday, August 19th.

Knights of Columbus Scholarship Winners Announced (MENA) The Knights of Columbus – Mena Council7258 recently announced their 2019 George Thomas Scholarship Senior High School recipients. Braxlie Strothers and Haley Richardson are this year’s winners. Both are from the Ouachita River School District – Acorn Campus. Each student will receive a $1000 scholarship to be used to continue their education. Strothers is the daughter of Tim and Jewel Strothers. She has been accepted to the University of Arkansas – Rich Mountain. Richardson is the daughter of Willard and Sandra Richardson and has been accepted to the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. The George Thomas Scholarship is open to all high school seniors in the Mena, Arkansas area. The Knights of Columbus council has been awarding these scholarships on an annual basis for nearly thirty years. Applications for the 2020 school year will be available later this year, with an announcement for the application process to be made at that time.

OLT to Perform 4 One Act Comedies by Chekhov (MENA) The Ouachita Little Theatre strives to bring a variety of plays to the stage in Mena. Recently, two very different musicals, “Annie” and “Always Patsy Cline” filled the seats at the old Lyric Theatre with classic Broadway and Country music fans alike. This fall, the theatre will take another turn and put on a series of comedic one act plays written by famous Russian playwright Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. Directed by John Puddington, the four one act plays will be performed October 11-13 and 18-20. He announces the play titles and cast as follows: The Harmful Effects of Tobacco will feature John Puddington as Marcellus Nyukhin. The Anniversary stars Paul Miner, Scotty Jenkins, Amanda Baker, Alexa Night, and Ron Webb. The Proposal features Scotty Jenkins, Alexa Night, Justin Richmond; and The Bear stars Fernando Ochoa, Alexa Night and Rudi Timmerman.

Show Off Your Plants, Flowers and Crops At The Fair BY LENA DAY, POLK COUNTY MASTER GARDENER (MENA) Are you a gardener? Are there fantastic plants, fruits, or vegetables in your garden? Do you love do show off your flower arrangements? Bring your exhibitions to the Polk County Fairground Education Building. You may win a ribbon and prize money. Entries for the Education Building will be accepted on Tuesday, August 27, 1:00 to 7:00 PM: plotted plants, and crops; on Wednesday, August 28, 7:30 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 10:00 AM: single cut flowers and flower arrangements, and crops. The judging starts at 1:00 PM Wednesday. There are three divisions: adult, junior and youth for each of the departments, Horticulture, Farm Crops and Fruit & Vegetable Crops. All crops, flowers, plants and vegetables must be produced, grown or arranged in Polk County by the exhibitor disease and pest free. Only one entry per person per class is allowed. You may enter exhibitions

in as many classes as you wish. Exhibitors must furnish container. Attractive containers are desirable in Flower Arrangements and in potted plants classes: dish garden, driftwood planting, English trough garden, garden art planting and Terrarium. Containers are considered as part of the entry for judging purpose. For a complete listing of all classes and rules, consult the County Fair catalog. You may find them available at feed stores, banks, the Extension Service and other businesses.

Cossatot River School Board Holds Special Meeting (WICKES) The Cossatot River School Board held a special session on Monday evening, August 19th, at the district administration building in Wickes. The directors met to discuss the resignations of two district employees and to reassign another to one of the positions that had resigned. Marilyn Keith submitted her resignation that was effective on August 13th as the Human Resources officer. The board accepted the resignation and immediately reassigned Laura Clark to the position. The board also accepted the resignation of Tyler Ludlow as a district Special Education Para Professional. No word on a replacement for that position. The board held a thirty minute executive session followed by the regularly scheduled, full board meeting.

Federal Warrant Served In Mena (MENA) Mena Police Officers went to a residence on Cordie Drive in Mena on Monday evening, August 19th, around 5:30 pm to serve a federal warrant. Marcelino Williamson, age 30, was arrested on a federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms warrant for one count of being a person subject to a court order in possession of a firearm. In addition, Kayla Odom, age 31, was also arrested and charged with Hindering Apprehension and Refusal to Submit to Arrest. Williamson and Odom were transported to the Polk County Correctional Facility; while Williamson has already been picked up by United States Marshals on the outstanding warrant.
