EDITOR’S NOTE Dear MyPSA members, Welcome to the 2020/21 issue of the MyPSA Newsletter!

With the advent of unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has changed the lives of not only pharmacy students but also people of all walks of life’s status quo.

This tenure also celebrates MyPSA’s 15th Anniversary and what a journey it has been. MyPSA has enriched the lives of pharmacy students and gave them an avenue for voicing out their ideas and concerns, as well as a place to meet new people and forge new friendships across the nation.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude, and congratulations to my subcommittees who has not only made this issue possible, but also made the process and enjoyable one.

CONCEPT MyPSA is a national pharmacy student association that brings together all form of force, collaboration and ideas to be executed by the pharmacy students in Malaysia.

VISION Our mission is to offer future PHARMACISTS a comprehensive introduction to global health issues, through our programmes and opportunities, we develop culturally sensitive pharmacy students of HEALTH especially drugs information as well as our intent on influencing the transnational inequalities.

15TH ANNIVERSARY

MyPSA HISTORY Malaysian Pharmacy Students’ Association (MyPSA) was founded in February 2005. Mr. Ahmad Munis Ahmad Sabri (President of USM Pharmacy Society) and Mr Hasryn Azzuar Mohd Khairy (President of Society of Pharmacy Students, UiTM) were the two who founded MyPSA. They only communicated through email and SMS and that allowed them to work on the proposal of Registar of Society (ROS) registration. In their first encounter in July 2005, they planned the very first board meeting for the committee members for this society, which would include various universities in Malaysia. Finally, in October 2005, the meeting for MyPSA establishment commenced and this took place in UiTM. Mr Ahmad called all student representatives from all pharmacy schools in Malaysia and invited Mr John Nguyen, the Liaison officer APRO-IPSF, based in Australia, to join the meeting. From then on, MyPSA was officially established and the pioneer executive board was formed. Mr Ahmad MyPSA Newsletter

Munis was appointed as the president. Whereas Mr Hasryn Azzuar Mohd Khairy was appointed as the vice president. Ms Hanum Maisarah was appointed as the secretary while Mr Adam Henry Sivapatham was selected as the treasurer.

The first ever MyPSA event was National Gathering of Pharmacy Students (NoGAPS) in 2016 which was held in UiTM. This event involved all the universities in Malaysia, followed by several events afterwards. After that, MyPSA also joined ventures with APRO, IPSF and attended the 7th Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium (APPS) from June to July 2008 in Chulalongkorn university in Thailand. Malaysia became the host for APPS from June to July of 2009.

MyPSA became a student chapter under the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) since 2009.

The hope for the establishment of MyPSA was that this society would unite and benefit all pharmacy students around Malaysia.

15TH ANNIVERSARY Some annual activities that MyPSA has conducted throughout the years is the National Clinical Pharmacy Challenge (NCPC). This is a national academy program for pharmacy students in Malaysia and this program provides the opportunity for the participants to practice good patient counselling skills. National Gathering of Pharmacy Students (NoGAPS) is an event that provides the platform for pharmacy students in Malaysia to interact with each other and to build bonds between the different universities as well as to hone their soft skills through workshops and symposiums that are conducted throughout the event. The National Pharmacy quiz and Piala Aishah (NPQ&PA) is an event where one university is selected as the host for the event each year. This event allows students to compete healthily in terms of intel-

ligence and knowledge as well as build bonds between the different universities.

Aside from this, the Public Health Campaign (PHC) has been a major event carried out in the pharmacy schools of Malaysia. This event created awareness on current health issues towards the public to share knowledge on health by exhibitions and talks. Another exciting event is the National Pharmacy Sports Carnival (NPSC) has been one of the most awaited events throughout the years where pharmacy students build rapport and camaraderie through the sports competition.

The National Pharmacy Research Competition (NPRC), an event conducted to enhance the quality of the research projects of students were also organised in these past years.

The Student Exchange Program (SEP) has also been organised throughout the years which have been highly successful. The pharmacy students have been able to meet and communicate with students from various countries. Another successful annual event that has taken place is the National Pharmacy Debate Competition (NPDC).

This event has empowered uprising and talented pharmacy debaters who show off their skills and knowledge through their speeches. Other notable events that should be mentioned are the Pharmacy Graduate Forum, Young Entrepreneur Program, forensic workshops and career talks. These events have been organized and carried in these 15 years of MyPSA’s journey as pharmacy students learn outside of their classrooms about pharmacy and have been equipped with knowledge and skills which would be of benefit to their future.

ALUMNI INETRVIEWS On 20th April 2021, Malaysian Pharmacy Student Association representatives interviewed MyPSA alumni, Nurhaziqah binti Izam from University of Cyberjaya and Bryan Seah Chung Yi from AIMST University. Nurhaziqah was Director of MyPSA Pharmacy Graduate Career Forum (PGCF) 2020, MyPSA advocacy officer 2019/2020, IPSF Duopharma Subcommittee 2020/2021 and now currently she is doing her PRP at Duopharma Biotech Berhad. While, Bryan was organiser of 2nd MyPSA Young Entrepreneurship Program (YEP), initiator of 1st Metamorphosis, MyPSA Entrepreneurship Officer 2017/2018, and MyPSA President for the session 2017/2018.

There were some questions prepared by MyPSA TV members and asked with both alumni . The questions are “what was your experience in being part of MyPSA and what have you gained?”, “People argue that extracurricular activities are not helpful for pharmacists.

bers?”. Miss Haziqah and Miss Bryan were very diligent when sharing their experiences in MyPSA.

Miss Haziqah was one of MyPSA members where she joined MyPSA during her second year until fourth year of pharmacy school. Miss Haziqah had mentioned that she gained many experiences through MyPSA, for instance she found her strength when handling the events in MyPSA. Moreover, she acknowledged herself as a honest and responsible person because she was a treasurer for an event where she had to handle money from RM 50,000 to RM 60,000. Apart from that, she also improved her presentation skills which helped her in future works and also helped to improve her communication skills during her PRP and FRP as well as working as community pharmacist. Miss Haziqah also witnessed that she improved her soft skills by joined MyPSA and helped her for interviews in the pharmaceutical industry.

She also mentioned the benefits of working together in a team which helped them to conduct a National Event of MyPSA in order to proceed an event without any interruptions.

15TH ANNIVERSARY to create network communication from various international universities of pharmacy school. Miss Haziqah was in charge of communicating with healthcare professionals such as doctors, Deputy Minister of Health for Malaysian Innovative Symposium.

Extracurricular activities are really helpful for pharmacists to develop their communication skills and also improve inner strength. Based on Miss Haziqah’s opinion this statement was strongly agreed by her that she improved her professionalism skills after joining MyPSA. Miss Haziqah also explained about her priorities between MyPSA and studies where she managed to become a successful student in academic as well as in extracurricular. Miss Haziqah was an editorial and translational subcommittee of MyPSA IPSF APRO 2020.

She translated English version articles into Bahasa Malaysia articles before publishing the articles. Lastly, Miss Haziqah shared some words of wisdom to future MyPSA members that involving MyPSA is very important!

Aside from that, the second interviewed MyPSA alumni was Mr. Bryan. Mr. Bryan explained beautifully about the friendship he cherished from MyPSA and he mentioned friendship was the best thing he gained from MyPSA. Based on Mr. Bryan’s opinion, extracurricular activities are important for pharmacists in order to work as pharmacists. People will learn and experience through extracurricular activities. By joining MyPSA which he took as an extracurricular activity, he got to know many people from various universities. Moreover, as a community pharmacist and also as a frontliner during this pandemic, Mr. Bryan shared his challenges where some people do not know the seriousness of the situation and importance of SOPs implied by the government. As a community pharmacist, Mr. Bryan helped to create awareness among the people about the importance of COVID. Mr. Bryan was one of the members who initiated the first Metamorphosis 1.0.

Lastly, as words of wisdom, Mr.Bryan mentioned a phrase, “doing is better than asking about something”.

MHSA FORMATION Healthcare students, from different fields of study, are banding together to collaborate on ensuring a well-rounded experience for the future medical practitioners of Malaysia. How? Through the formation of a brand new society called MHSA, or the Malaysian Healthcare Students Alliance, which was an initiative by the Malaysian Pharamcy Students’ Association (MyPSA).

The launching of the organisation was announced through a press release on February 14 2021.

MHSA compromises of three societies; the Malaysian Pharmacy Students’ Association (MyPSA), the Malaysian Medics International (MMI) and the Malaysian Dental Students’ Association (MDSA). With their motto ‘Healthcare As One’, MHSA is a student-led, non-political and non-profit national level healthcare alliance that intends to unite all healthcare students, forming a network and community of healthcare students across Malaysia. In embarking on a new and united healthcare frontier, MHSA aims to repreMyPSA Newsletter

sent and advocate for the collective voice, roles, position, education and welfare of healthcare students in Malaysia, enhance public health and improve global health through collaborative efforts from all healthcare students in Malaysia as well as promote unity and strengthen the relationship between healthcare students in Malaysia.

With the full cooperation of all three societies representing equally varying yet vital parts of Malaysia’s healthcare system, MHSA’s mission is to provide a centralised platform for the implementation of projects and activities for all healthcare students in Malaysia. Their vision is to unite and facilitate interprofessional collaboration between all healthcare professionals with various expertise, working towards multidisciplinary, patient-centered care.

MHSA 1ST INTERPROFESSIONAL FORUM AND SOCIAL GATHERING 2021

On the 21st March 2021, the brand new society, Malaysian Healthcare Student Alliance held its very first interprofessional forum and social gathering. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was held online through Zoom, joined by participants from all around Malaysia, whether they be pharmacy, medical or dental students.

Before the forum, each speaker gave the participants a brief presentation about their respective field to learn not just about their future career, but others as well. Dr Leong explained how dentists do more than just ‘fix teeth’, but ensure the welfare of a patient’s entire oral health. He was pleased to announce how dentists have gained more acknowledgement during the Covid-19 pandemic as they joined fellow frontliners with Covid-19 screening swab tests, contact-tracing and even vaccinations for the public. Mr

Amrahi’s presentation centered around the ‘unsung heroes’ of the pandemic, pharmacists. He discussed in great length the multitude of roles pharmacists play in the healthcare system, stretching from clinical research and drug regulation all the way to ensuring top-notch education programs in universities.

Dr Raymond emphasizes the importance of collaborations in a new era of healthcare, in which four parts come together to make a whole.

This involves the ‘Policymaker’ (Any governing board/organisations), the ‘Provider’ (Healthcare providers of all range), ‘Patients’ and ‘Payors’ (Paying patients, private or universal insurance).

Suffice it to say, not only did this event bring much knowledge to the participants, but also allowed them to form professional relationships with people of different backgrounds and professions. This will be crucial to bridge the gap between pharmacists, doctors and dentists, and to create the understanding that although we will contribute to society in different ways, each profession is vital in maintaining a functioning healthcare system.

MyPSA VIRTUAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM On February 6th 2021, Malaysian Pharmacy Student Association (MyPSA) conducted its annual student exchange program, ‘Chill-lah With Malaysia’. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, organising a face-to-face event with participants from all around the world wasn’t an option, so the event turned virtual. Students from countries like Poland, Indonesia, Egypt and many others gathered via the Zoom platform with their Malaysian hosts. Turnout for the event was very pleasing!

The title of the talk was ‘Evolution of Retail Pharmacy Landscape in Malaysia and the Future of Pharmacy’. Datin Mariani narrated the Malaysian healthcare to the fellow international participants with much clarity and information. The talk led to the discussion in different types of care, primary, secondary or tertiary and which facilities accommodate each type of healthcare for the public. Datin Mariani also talked about the development of public pharmacy service, stretching MyPSA Newsletter

back from the British Era until the present day. Participants gained a deeper knowledge of the pharmaceutical system in Malaysia, as well as the various regulations pharmacists abide by, such as the Code of Ethics, Poison Act and the Regulation of Pharmacists Act. The talk ended with a hope that evolution of pharmacy care would include online pharmacies, home care services and digital healthcare for all patients.

During the Q&A session, Datin Mariani answered many questions regarding the pharmacy practices in Malaysia and what working prospects as a pharmacist here would be like, especially in retail.

What followed next was the Cultural Session, where the international participants were introduced to the diversely ethnic nation that is Malaysia. They were exposed to Malaysia’s geography, a hot and humid country in a tropical rainforest setting. The significance of our national flag (Jalur Gemilang) flag and national flower (Bunga Raya) were also explained, followed by

EXTERNAL NEWS a presentation about Malaysian citizens who come from different races and religions and each of their traditional clothing for females and males respectively. And of course, none of our local cuisine was forgotten, such as the Malay nasi lemak, Chinese char kuetiau and Indian tosai.

Other aspects of Malaysia that were brought up included the myriad of multicultural festivals celebrated, superstitions and myths (Pantang-larang) obeyed dutifully by people, the dozens of languages spoken which included Manglish, the part and parcel of being Malaysian.

The entire Cultural Session was interactive, so participants got to practice speaking the local language with the help of the Malaysian hosts.

Once the Cultural Session ended, an exciting round of Kahoot! was conducted, testing the participants’ knowledge on their newly acquired information about Malaysia and all its wonders. Needless to say, the challenge was filled with fun and excitement.

After a brief photo session, everyone bade goodbye and promised to keep in touch not just as collaborating professionals, but as friends. Everyone gained knowledge of Malaysia and its pharmaceutical field, relationships from around the world and experience for future events yet to come.

6TH MyPSA NATIONAL PHARMACY DEBATE COMPETITION (NPDC) 2020 National Pharmacy Debate Competition (NPDC) is an annual event under Malaysia Pharmacy Students’ Association (MyPSA) that involves 21 pharmacy society students in Malaysia. For the first time, International Medical University (IMU) Pharmacy Students’ Association has become the official host for the 6th MyPSA NPDC on 8th to 11th of October 2020.

This competition is set to be a platform for pharmacy students to have an opportunity to express their own opinions about the current issues in Malaysia. From this competition, it is hoped to create a favourable atmosphere where debate groups have a healthy competition in terms of general knowledge and personal soft skills. Otherwise, NPDC also encourages students to interact among each other from other universities in the context of a social and intellectual activity.

This year, NPDC is held online instead of face-to-face like the past few years. This is due to the MyPSA Newsletter

COVID-19 pandemic which have led to numbers of uncertainties such as postponement of face-to-face classes. All the sessions were played live on the official 6th MyPSA NPDC Facebook page. Fortunately, the event went smoothly without much technical issues. NPDC is made up of 5 stages, including preliminary round 1, 2 & 3, semi-final and finals.

The debate format is conducted in Asian Parliamentary style. The debate topics were done by revolving around the latest science and pharmaceutical issues.

The winner of 6th MyPSA NPDC goes to International Islamic Universiti Malaysia (IIUM), the first runner-up was from Quest International University Team 2 and second runner-up was Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The best final speaker belongs to Muhammad Alif Zahid

1ST MyPSA NATIONAL PHARMACY COMPETITION (NPC) 2021

The 1st MyPSA National Pharmacy Competition (NPC) is a national level competition event that consists of 3 challenges which are: • Piala Aishah Compounding Challenge (PA) • Pharmacy Quiz Challenge (QC) • Clinical Pharmacy Challenge (CC) These events are held in association and supervision of Malaysian Pharmacy Students Association (MyPSA). Each challenge was carried out independently by three different pharmacy societies in Malaysia.

Pharmacy Student Society, UniKL Royal College of Medicine Perak (PSS RCMP) has been given the opportunity to host for Piala Aishah Compounding Challenge (PA).

Piala Aishah Compounding Challenge is an online-based competition that provides a platform for the Bachelor of Pharmacy students throughout Malaysia to compete healthily and demonstrate students’ level of competence in compounding and clinical knowledge. This competition covered the topic of extemporaneous preparations that include MyPSA Newsletter

14TH MyPSA NATIONAL PHARMACY SPORTS CARNIVAL (NPSC) 2021 VIRTUAL RUN The National Pharmacy Sports carnival (NPSC) is an annual event fully organized by pharmacy students under the Malaysian pharmaceutical Students’ Association (MyPSA). This year because of the pandemic COVID-19, the 14th MyPSA National Pharmacy Sports carnival (NPSC) 2021 was conducted virtually on 28th March until 11th April 2021. The event was organised by Society Of Pharmacy Students, SOPHYS Universiti Teknologi MARA, UiTM. Participants from 19 pharmacy schools all over Malaysia will compete to bring glory to their respective universities. This sports carnival comprises two categories which include E-sports and varieties of virtual sports competition.

One of the events is virtual run. Because of the pandemic COVID-19, the run mode change into virtual run.

The aim of virtual run is to provide a platform for the pharmacy students to do more evercises, workouts and jogging. Besides, virtual run also promote the run outside of loMyPSA Newsletter

This year, because of the pandemic COVID-19, the run mode change into virtual run which the participants have to download running apps for example, Adidas Running, Strava or Nike Run Club to have the run. There are 392 students from multiple universities participated in the virtual run event which are 52 from UiTM, 73 from UM, 50 from IIUM, 40 from UoC, 35 from UniKL RCMP, 48 from UKM, 6 from Taylor’s University, 5 from SEGI University, 4 from AIMST University, 4 from Monash University Malaysia Campus, 4 from MSU, 28 from UnisZa, 12 from QUEST International University Perak, 2 from UNMC, 7 from KPJUC, 19 from USM, 1 from UCSI and 1 from LUC. During the event, there were no designated race routes for the

Participants were encourage to choose a route that is safe and has strong GPS signals. The virtual run event was available for three available distance which were 1km, 3km and 5km run. During the event, participants finished the selected distance in a single run. Participants also tracked their run through running apps to get the result of the run.

After running, participants uploaded their result in google form for an evidence of their participation to get the e-certificate and a t-shirt.

MyPSA YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAM 2021 The Young Entrepreneur proram (YEP) is an initiative organized by the Entrepreneurship Office with the aim to introduce the general idea of entrepreneurship and to inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship among pharmacy students.

The core concept of YEP lies in the business proposal presented in the pitching competition to inspire the students’ ability in introducing, promoting and persuading investors in the future. YEP 2021 is conducted online on Zoom platform with the theme of Ignite creativity. Boundless innovation. Better tomorrow.

The planning of YEP started with the submission of proposal to MyPSA followed by the initiative of committees searching for workshops speakers, mentors, pitching judges and also sponsorships. Every participant has found the 3 days event

to be fruitful and the event went smoothly with the commitment and passion of every committee.

YEP 2021 has been conducted virtually through Zoom platform due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but with the passion and commitment of each committee and the experienced speakers, mentors and judges invited, this event has been conducted successfully. It is believed that YEP has successfully inspiring the participants to be more creative and innovative to adapt themselves in pharmaceutical sector which is constantly evolving. The participants are able to interact with the experienced leaders and experts in the pharmaceutical sector through various online workshops and talks. I hope that through the event of YEP 2021, more passionate individuals will be inculcated with the core values that the organizer try to deliver and being inspired to be future pharmapreneurs.
