The Players’ Guide is an annual publication by MyPlayers. Ever wondered what exactly the Players’ Organisation does for you? It’s possibly much more than you think! It’s all in here - your comprehensive go-to manual for 2021. If you are an eager student, you can “study” the entire publication from cover to cover. However, we would advise you to also revisit specific sections of the
2
Players’ Guide during the year if you have any concerns or questions regarding our service offering to professional rugby players in South Africa. In most cases, you will find the answers in these pages. You can download the Players’ Guide, and it is also available to read on the MyPlayers App and website. Should you need further information, we invite you to get in touch with the contact person named in each of the sections.

5THINGS TO KNOW
ABOUT MYPLAYERS
The Players’ Organisation was founded in 1998 by the players themselves when a need arose for collective representation during the early years of professionalism in rugby union. Today, we represent more than 500 professional rugby players.
1
2
The organisation is 100% owned by the players.
The players serve on various leadership structures in the organisation. These include the MyPlayers Board, Players’ Trust, the SARPA (labour division) Executive Committee, and the Provincial Player Representative Group. The various leadership structures determine the vision and mission of the Players’ Organisation.
3
We represent and look after the collective interests of all the professional rugby players in South Africa – both on and off the field. See pages 15 and 16 for a definition and examples of collective player interests. Also, MyPlayers offers players a wide portfolio of benefits and services, including pension funds, medical schemes, commercial rights management and payments, etc.
4
To benefit from the services provided by MyPlayers, you must be a member. This comes at a marginal monthly membership fee deducted from your salary by your employer. (Please see page 21 for details.)

BUT For rugby to commercially utilise these three mediums, broadcasters, sponsors and the creators of licensing products need access to the two types of player rights.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PLAYERS RIGHTS
I. INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS When one or two players without team kit are being used together in a campaign for commercial gain. You and your agent manage these rights, and external parties can
contact you directly to utilise these rights. Individual rights are not part of the MyPlayers commercial rights programme, and you will not receive remuneration from MyPlayers for the use of your individual rights.
II. COLLECTIVE RIGHTS MyPlayers manages these rights. When three or more players with or without team kit are being used together in a campaign for commercial gain. These rights are secured by MyPlayers and include:
APPEARANCES When your employer requests you to perform an appearance for them, or for one of their commercial partners or sponsors at a planned event or function. Charity events and media duties DO NOT count as commercial appearances.
16
ATTRIBUTES Player information (names, lengths, weights, Test caps, etc.) Signatures and images
MYPLAYERS DOES 4 THINGS WITH THESE COLLECTIVE RIGHTS We group and structure your collective commercial rights. We evaluate these rights and get the market-related value for them. We sell these rights to the rugby industry for them to use for commercial purposes. We manage the commercial payments process and ensure that you receive the appropriate income for the use of your rights.
