HOW TO USE
T H E P L AY E R S’ G U I D E
Ever wondered what exactly the Players’ Organisation does for you? It’s possibly much more than you think! And it’s all in here – your comprehensive go-to manual for 2021/2022, the season that marks our official entry into competitions of the Northern Hemisphere.
However, we would advise you to also revisit specific sections of the Players’ Guide during the season if you have any concerns or questions regarding our service offering to professional rugby players in South Africa. In most cases, you will find the answers in these pages (download the Guide from Issuu, or access it on the MyPlayers mobile app).
Eager student? Then, “study” the entire publication from cover to cover. If the answers still elude you, we invite you to get in touch with the contact person referenced in each of the sections.

THINGS TO KNOW ABO UT M Y PL AY E R S
The Players’ Organisation was founded in 1998 by the players themselves when a need arose for collective representation during the early years of professionalism in Rugby Union. Today, it represents all professional rugby
1
players in South Africa.
2
The organisation is 100% owned by South Africa’s professional rugby players.
The players serve on various leadership structures in the organisation. These include the MyPlayers Board, Players’ Trust, the SARPA (labour division) Executive Committee, and the Provincial Player Representative Group. The various leadership structures determine the vision and mission of the Players’ Organisation.
3
We represent and look after the collective interest and purpose of all the South African professional rugby teams and players from time to time. See pages 15 and 16 for a definition and examples of collective player interests. MyPlayers offers players a wide portfolio of benefits and services, including pension funds, medical schemes, commercial rights management and payments, etc.
4
To benefit from the services provided by MyPlayers, you must be a member. This comes at a marginal monthly membership fee deducted from your salary by your employer. (Please see page 21 for details.)

COMMERCIAL RIGHTS ATTRIBUTES
MyPlayers manages these commercial rights. Collective commercial rights are being activated when three or more players with or without team kit are being used together in a campaign for commercial gain.

These rights are secured by MyPlayers and include:
APPEARANCES
Player information (name, height, weight, Test caps, etc.) Signatures and images
When your employer requests you to perform an appearance for them, or for one of their commercial partners
or sponsors at a planned event or function. Charity events and media duties DO NOT count as commercial appearances.

We group and structure your collective commercial rights. We evaluate these rights and get the market-related value for them. We sell these rights to the rugby industry for them to use for commercial purposes. We manage the commercial payments process and ensure that you receive the appropriate income for the use of your rights.

FINANCIAL AND TAX ADVISORY PANELS For more details and contact information, visit the MyPlayers website at: https://myplayers.co.za/ myplayers-financial/
Professional athletes are often so consumed by their immediate environment, earnings and goals that other critical aspects of their private lives get pushed back on the list of priorities. Financial literacy and planning fall in this neglected category. MyPlayers decided to close this gap by creating a Financial and a Tax Advisory Panel consisting of experts in each field from 11 established and respected financial and auditing services companies. THE FINANCIAL ADVISORY PANEL This is your ‘gateway’ to appoint your own wealth expert of choice, who will assist you with financial advice, analysing your financial needs and helping you prepare your future “balance sheet” for the day when you retire from professional rugby. THE TAX ADVISORY PANEL The tax advisory panel can assist you with the daunting and complex task of business structuring / advice and taxation matters.
