Electric Vehicle Supercharger Coming to Isle of Palms

By Joshua Uys Electric vehicle drivers will soon have a new charging option on the Isle of Palms. Construction is wrapping up on a new Tesla Supercharger station at the Island Center shopping center near Harris Teeter.

With both J1772 and NACS connectors, the charging stations will be compatible with virtually every electric vehicle sold in the United States, including newer and older models. Most drivers will be able to charge without an adapter, even if they don’t drive a Tesla.

The installation includes four Tesla V4 Supercharger stalls capable of delivering charging speeds of up to 325 kW for compatible vehicles.

The new charging station will provide a convenient amenity for both residents and visitors traveling to the island in electric vehicles while supporting a wider range of transportation options.

Construction is underway, with the station expected to become operational by the end of July, pending final testing and activation.

Recently, I had a friend ask about property taxes for IOP. This resident is pretty engaged and had a career in the financial world so our conversation surprised me a bit and made me wonder how many other residents might wonder about this information. Here’s how the conversation went: Friend: “How much does IOP receive in property taxes?”

Me: “About $6.5 million is received from the County annually by IOP. Friend: “That’s not possible there are over 4,000 housing units on IOP! That would only be about $1600 per unit and tax bills are higher than that!”

Me: “The $6.5 million is the portion IOP receives of the total collected by the County. IOP residents get billed by the County for approximately $62 million for property and personal taxes and then sends IOP its portion – the $6.5 million.

Friend: “Do you think that is a reasonable split between the County and IOP?” Me: “Absolutely not but there isn’t a lot of flexibility on our part to adjust the amount we receive. Property tax bills include Charleston County operating millage, County Parks and Recreation millage, Charleston County School District millage, Residential garbage and recycling disposal fees, Charleston County stormwater program, Trident Technical College millage and IOP operating and debt millage. But again, the amount received by IOP from the total collected by the County is about $6.5 million annually.”

Friend: “So what are the other revenue sources for IOP? Me: “Business licenses, business permits, short term rental licenses, parking fees, franchise fees, grants and tourism revenue. Tourism revenue makes up almost 30% of our total revenue, which helps keep our property taxes low.”

Friend: “Do you think residents know that’s how it works and the effect tourism revenue has on their bills?”

Me: “If you didn’t know it as plugged in as you are, I can’t imagine others would have a full understanding of our revenue mix.”

So, if you’re following the math, the tourism revenue our city receives creates a huge benefit for residents by keeping our property tax bills among the lowest in the area. If we didn’t have the tourism revenue, we would have to find alternative sources to support the services we provide. However, even with the tourism revenue, there are times we need to adjust the IOP portion of your tax bill like we did for this upcoming tax year for increased operating costs and a new fire truck. However, with that tourism revenue brings several potential pain points for residents – additional traffic, increased visitors, increased litter, restaurant reservations harder to come by to name a few.

City Council keeps an eye on the resident/visitor balance. We review monthly reports from the Fire and Police Departments detailing their activity for the month that detail livability items. We also review a monthly analysis of dwelling units and short-term rentals broken down by types of property and ownership (full or part time) which details the percentage of rental properties in our community.

The balancing act of residents and tourists isn’t an easy one but through ongoing monitoring, ordinances that try and keep behavior between the lines and strong engagement from the rental management companies, we will continue to keep our eyes on this important topic.

By Capt. Geoff Bennett August brings warm temperatures, but it also delivers fantastic action on the water. To maximize your success, plan your outings around the early morning or late evening, when fish are most active. By tailoring your tactics to low-light hours and choosing the right setups, you can beat the heat and stay on a steady bite all month.

When starting at first light, topwater lures are your best option. Plan to arrive at your spot just as the horizon begins to brighten. In the dawn shadows, fish aggressively target surface disturbances, mistaking the rhythmic walk of a topwater plug for a struggling baitfish. This approach is particularly effective for both redfish and trout. For maximum action, tie on a Heddon Super Spook Jr. in chartreuse and black or red and white.

Popping corks are a reliable producer all day, regardless of the tide phase.

They offer unmatched versatility and will draw strikes from nearly every inshore species, including trout, redfish, flounder, ladyfish and sharks. Using a weighted popping cork helps maximize casting distance. Tie an 18- to 24-inch fluorocarbon leader from the cork to a No. 1 circle hook, then bait it with live shrimp, mud minnows or realistic artificial shrimp. When the cork goes under, simply reel until you feel the weight of the fish before lifting your rod tip. No hard hookset is required.

When the sun reaches its peak, the shark bite stays red hot. Sharks remain aggressive even in the afternoon heat. To combat persistent bait stealers, rig a whole live menhaden on a 7/0 circle hook. Inshore waters are currently holding plenty of sharpnose, bonnethead and blacktip sharks. As an added bonus, soak these big baits long enough and you just might hook a trophy bull redfish.

Letter to the Editor: Improving Beach Access for Wheelchair Users

By Jim Raih As most, if not all, of you know, my wife, Charlyne, uses a power wheelchair. She serves on the Charleston County Parks ADA Accessibility Committee and might be a valuable resource for the city on ADA accessibility issues and concerns.

She recently experienced an issue on one of the newer beach access paths. She moved to one side of the walkway to allow a beachgoer pulling a fully loaded beach wagon to pass. In doing so, her wheelchair rolled off the edge of the path. Thankfully, she was not injured. However, she was unable to get back onto the path without assistance.

She asked me to let the city know about the issue. The pathway would be much safer if 4x4 or 4x6 edging extended the entire length of the path to the beach. The edging would act as a curb and help prevent someone using a power wheelchair from accidentally rolling off the side, as she did.

For what it’s worth, I wanted to pass along her concern.

I know grant funding was used to make improvements to the beach access, and those improvements are great, much needed and appreciated.

One small addition that could make a significant difference for someone using a wheelchair would be to add a 6-foot-by-6-foot turnout on one side of the path. This would allow someone in a wheelchair to pull safely out of the way and enjoy the view for a few minutes without blocking others using the walkway.

Thanks again for all the time and talent you bring to the table on behalf of the island’s residents.

Letter to the Editor: How Do Sullivan’s Island Salaries Compare?

By Ned Higgins Life is increasingly expensive and, in some cases, almost unaffordable.

We’re all looking for ways to save money. It’s been suggested that the Sullivan’s Island town budget is excessive and should be vigorously pruned — or possibly completely revamped. Salaries for Sullivan’s Island town employees have been proposed as one area of the budget that might need a haircut. Is this true?

In 2025, the Town of Seabrook Island completed a survey of salaries for 21 different staff positions and compared them with those of 21 other coastal municipalities from Florida to North Carolina. The analysis included salaries for the towns of Sullivan’s Island and Kiawah Island, as well as the cities of Folly Beach and Isle of Palms.

There are eight staff positions for which data are available for Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms and Folly Beach. They are shown in the graph. Sullivan’s Island is shown in red. In only two of the eight positions does Sullivan’s Island pay more than Isle of Palms or Folly Beach.

In a separate analysis of the data (not shown in the graph), there are eight staff positions for which data are available for Sullivan’s Island and Kiawah Island, although they are not the same eight positions shown in the graph. In all eight positions, salaries at Sullivan’s Island are lower than those paid at Kiawah Island.

This is reassuring information because salaries and benefits account for almost 50% of our entire town budget.

We can always find ways to reduce expenses, but it appears that, at least with regard to staff salaries, Sullivan’s Island is swimming in the same waters as Isle of Palms, Folly Beach and Kiawah Island.

Award-Winning Fleming Open Returns to Seabrook Island Oct. 6-11, 2026

By Susan Courtney The 42nd annual Fleming Open returns to Seabrook Island Oct. 6-11, 2026, following significant recognition from the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which honored the tournament with its 2025 Tournament Recognition Award for outstanding player experience and satisfaction.

Building on that achievement, the Fleming Open’s singles and doubles events have been elevated to a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Level 2-sanctioned tournament for 2026. Seabrook Island will welcome approximately 350 to 400 players from across the United States and around the world to compete in men’s and women’s age divisions ranging from 30 to 80, along with Level 1 ITF mixed doubles competition.

Tournament Director Laura Ferreira, director of racquet sports at Seabrook Island Club, coordinates the event in partnership with the USTA and Tournament Chair Mary Anne Rayfield, along with a dedicated team of Seabrook Island residents who volunteer their time and talents to support tournament operations.

“We’re honored to welcome players from around the world back to Seabrook Island for another exceptional week of competition,” said Ferreira. “The Fleming Open has earned a reputation for outstanding hospitality, first-class competition and an unmatched sense of community.

Our volunteers are the heart of this tournament, and their dedication creates an experience that keeps players returning year after year.”

Ferreira and Rayfield encourage Seabrook Island residents to become part of the tournament by volunteering. Opportunities are available throughout tournament week, and volunteers can register through the volunteer section of the tournament website.

First of all, I’d like everyone to stop referring to me as the “little brother.” I’m 175 pounds of paws, jowls, cuddles and questionable coordination. Usually, I’m carrying a toy and ready to sit on your lap. Then you’ll quickly notice I’m a lot of things, but “little” isn’t one of them. OK, let’s begin.

I’m Doc. Mr. Sir if you’re feeling fancy. Chonky Donkey if you’re family, although that one confuses me. Personally, I think I move like a professional athlete, but sometimes everything doesn’t arrive at the same time. My paws announce my entrance as the rest of me catches up, all smiles and ready for whatever.

I’m lucky because around here, being me is more than enough.

Often described as goofy, dopey or clumsy — all true — I also have the biggest heart. So big that it spills out through the crown of my head. All love with zero attention span. Sissy is the brains. I don’t need to think. It’s all about this moment right here, the ultimate boy in my pack of ladies.

I didn’t know I was looking for where I belonged, but I sure am glad my Moms ordered the biggest boy the shelter had!

The first day I arrived from the shelter, limbs tumbling out of the car, life officially began! My new sister quickly claimed me, sensing I’d be easy to boss around and silly enough to entertain her.

The sillier I get, the more she rolls her eyes, and I stay on her heels, following her every move.

She knows how to climb trees for squirrels. I watch. She knows which chair has the best view.

I steal it. She even knows a secret door where St. Austin passes out bacon! OK! I think she’s magic.

But, oh, what she said about the incident? Yes! I didn’t mean to open the door with a heavy lean while nudging it with my nose. I swear she made me do it! I surprised myself. When the “click” happened and she gave me that look, we were off for a good time. Call it peer pressure, but it was a bonding moment. When your big sister wants to go on an adventure, you go on an adventure!

I didn’t understand the confusion with the police. Nobody broke in. We just forgot to come right back and left the door open. Nothing to see here — just two lucky dogs out on the town, playing in traffic.

Sometimes people ask what makes me lucky.

I used to think it was the homemade dinners, sleeping inside, the bacon or the cuddles. Then I realized those things are wonderful, but they’re not what wags my tail. My tail wags because every morning I wake up, grab my hedgehog, look for my Moms — check. Look for my sister — check, check. When everyone is home, so am I. I’m bigger now, regardless of what my sister thinks. She still sighs when I nibble her ears. She rolls her eyes when I steal her chair. She acts like I’m the most annoying thing that’s ever happened to her. But every time we go somewhere, she still looks to see if I’m coming.

Yup, I’m right here, because that’s what little brothers do, even the really big ones.
