Birdwatcher’s Paradise While you’re walking, don’t forget to keep your eyes and ears open for the white-rumped kingfisher (Todiramphus leucopygius), one of the many endemic birds that roam the park. With around 250 bird species in Lombok, you’ll be sure to find some incredible species to photograph, including several found nowhere else in the world, such as the Lombok sunbird (Leptocoma usnea). If you’re lucky, you might even spot raptors like the Javan hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi) and Brahminy kite (Haliastur indus) soaring above the canopy.

The early mornings are the best time to spot these rare birds, especially during the wet season when migratory species pass through Lombok. Keep your eyes to the sky for waders, shorebirds, and waterfowl who, like many tourists, make a brief stop in Lombok on their greater journey of life!

Last month, a group of students from Lombok Tourism Polytechnic visited the park for a practicum. During their time there, they engaged in birdwatching and developed their tour-guiding skills, with a particular focus on effectively communicating the unique aspects of the local environment.

In exchange for sharing their ecotourism knowledge, they also received training in wilderness first aid techniques.

• Stick to marked trails to avoid disturbing fragile ecosystems.

Planning Your Visit • Getting there: The park is about an hour’s drive from Kuta by motorbike or car. Expect rough terrain once inside the park.

• What to bring: Plenty of water, sunscreen, good hiking shoes, snacks, and bug spray.

VR46 Riders Academy Came to Mandalika, in Search of Exceptional Indonesian Young Riders

R46 Riders Academy came to Mandalika in January.

Supported by Pertamina, an Indonesian state-owned energy giant, they embarked on a mission to find and nurture future Indonesian riders to compete in international races under a program called “Pertamina Enduro VR46 Riders Academy”. Academy manager Gianluca Falcioni and MotoGP’s Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team manager Uccio Salluci were present. Notable alumnus like two times (2022 and 2023) MotoGP World Champion Francesco Bagnaia, together with Franco Morbidelli, Marco Bezzechi, and Luca Marini, were also there to practice and meet young Indonesian riders.

Throughout the practice, Bagnaia achieved the third fastest all-time-lap-record at the 4.31 km Circuit: 1:34:096 seconds with a Ducati V4S—0.523 seconds faster (believe me, this is a huge gap!) compared to the 2023 lap time of Markus Reiterberger with his BMW M1000RR, an equivalent in terms of engine specification. Bezzechi and Marini each rode an Aprilia RSV4 and Honda RC213V-S, just like their respective seats in the 2025 MotoGP season. All machines used in the event were standard, mass-produced, and not excessively customised, as the regulation prohibits practice with MotoGP-customized machines before the season has officially started.

Local communities and national talents were allowed to join parts of the track agenda. Not merely meeting, greeting, and taking selfies with their idols, young Indonesian riders were allowed to join the track walk to hear the experience, ask questions, and be inspired directly by the MotoGP superstars.

Arai Agaska Dibani Laksana, a 16-year-old Lombok local who was the National Sport 150cc race winner at the Pertamina Mandalika Racing Series 2024, was spotted joining the interaction. The series itself is a bimonthly national motorsport championship held at the Circuit. In 2025, it will start in April and conclude in November. VR46 Racing Academy will assess the performance of young Indonesian riders in the series and select the four best-performing riders.

Eddy Saputra, CEO of Pride Motorsports, the series’ organiser, explained that those riders under 20 years old will be sent to the Academy headquarters in Tavullia, Italy, in mid-2025 to receive intensive physical and psychological training, nutritional guidance, and also communication skills coaching.

He added, “These are important so these riders can have a global mentality to compete internationally”.

Founded by MotoGP Legend Valentino Rossi in 2014, the Academy boasts exclusive, top-notch professional resources, networks, and state-of-the-art training facilities. Traditionally, the Academy only accepts Italian talents to train on their home ground, but apparently, this time is a remarkable exception.

Priandhi Satria, CEO of the Circuit, echoed the excitement of the mission. In his press statement, he said, “We deeply appreciate the dedication of related stakeholders to the growth of Indonesian motorsport. This collaboration is an important step to nurture future talent and strengthening Indonesia’s presence in the international racing scene.”

Off the race track, the riders seemed to enjoy the majestic southern coastline of Lombok. Morbidelli, the current rider of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team MotoGP, and Celestino Vietti, a Moto2 rider, even rode jet skis, played casual football and swam with Lombok local children on the white-sand Kuta shoreline just before a rainy, calming sunset.

Pinalo: Transforming Pineapple Leaves into Fabric Each issue, mylombok will highlight a vendor from the Lombok Eco Market—the monthly pop-up market that offers the best of Lombok’s eco-friendly crafts, foods, cosmetics and more.

inalo, was established by passionate founder, Aisyah Odist in 2018. Through her previous experience in the retail industry, she got a vision and saw a great sustainability opportunity in Lombok. She knew by launching Pinalo, that she would be able to recycle waste from pineapple leaves as this would be the main raw material used for her products and at the same time she would be able to employ locals in lombok.

Where did your inspiration come from?

Actually, I have been managing a waste bank in Lombok since 2011, so for almost 10 years I have been focusing on recycling plastic rubbish, ecology education, and making organic compost from food. Because of this, I was training a lot of people all around Lombok and one day I was visiting a small village in the east of Lombok, which had a huge pineapple farm and the farmers were harvesting the fruits at the time. I was watching the process and saw they were throwing out all of the pineapple leaves—and this is where my inspiration came from.

How did you get started?

As I mentioned above, the village was producing a lot of pineapples, but the farmers in the village were only harvesting the fruits and the leaves were being used to feed the animals. The rest were thrown away and it just became waste . When I saw this, I thought maybe I could use the leaves for composting. I tried to make compost from the pineapple leaves mixed together with other organic waste. In addition to this, I also studied the characteristics of pineapple leaves, and found the leaves are made from fibres. I then remembered Lombok is famous for weaving textiles, so I came up with the idea of using the fibre from the pineapple leaves to spin it into yarn, which can then be woven into fabric.

What happened next?

I returned to the village to conduct a study on pineapple leaves fibre with the farmers and formed a ‘pineapple farmers business group’. Besides farming only the fruits, they could also use the leaves to make fibre and sell to the companies. The collected pineapple fibres are taken to the waste bank, where it can be processed and undergo fibre treatment to remove the fungi or bacteria. Then the spinning and weaving process can begin.

Have you always cared about the planet?

Yes of course! I started this waste care activity in 2011, then founded the community and waste bank, inviting people to care about the environment from within themselves, holding waste processing training, waste management training and inviting young people to participate in campaign activities for movement in schools. For the past 13 years, the results have begun to be seen, nowadays there are many communities that have grown and care about environmental issues. The government has also supported every activity related to cleanliness and mutual cooperation carried out by the communities.

How are you helping others think differently?

I invite them to think more creatively and care for each other, including their surrounding environment.

How are you changing minds?

Through education—I believe education changes one’s mindset, which shapes our culture. The culture of being ashamed for littering also fosters someone’s creative ideas and innovation. For example, with the pineapple leaves waste that was previously thrown away and became a pile of garbage ruining the environment can now be used as a raw material, becoming a job opportunity for women farmers in the village. This has increased their income and it is a job that can be done from one’s home.

What advice can you give to others who are interested in starting their own sustainable business?

Making eco-friendly products with a sustainable impact on the environment, economy, and community involvment actually has a specific market segment, so to start this type of bussiness, we also need to think about where we should start. Sound of Magic Island: Apip Sutardi

A New Sound of (Music) Magic

A

pip Sutardi is a professional musician. He started out on his musical career in 2000, in Yogyakarta.

With various bands—New Colors Jogja, Hot Plate Jakarta and others—he has toured Indonesia, performing in towns and cities throughout the country, at large and small events, cafes, bars, hotels, and restaurants.

After 25 years of performing mainly cover songs, he has made a shift in direction. He spoke with mylombok recently about a new project.

The Music “Currently I am working on a solo music project and creating my own original music under the name Sound of Magic Island. It was launched on 16 November 2024—a date chosen because of my birthday. My goal is to produce good, original musical works that everyone in Lombok, in Indonesia—even the whole world—can enjoy.”

The name he chose for the project—‘Sound of Magic Island’ —was inspired by the island of Lombok.

“I think of it as ‘Magic Island’”, he says. “It’s an island with beautiful natural surroundings and friendly people, which always makes us want to come back to enjoy its charm. “My songs focus on nature and the island’s beautiful beaches, and they have a beat that’s both relaxing and energising. I hope the project will help make Lombok even better known throughout the world.”

Apip’s musical style reflects his love of reggae music.

In Sound of Magic Island, as well as writing lyrics about Lombok’s natural beauty, he shows his concern for social and humanitarian issues.

“Reggae is music that is easy for everyone to enjoy. It’s a genre about relaxing and spreading messages of love and peace. As well as being entertaining, the music

invites listeners to care about the conditions of nature, the environment, and the world, which we must protect, fight for, and preserve together.”

The Cause Apip lives out these concerns in his everyday life. He is based in Lombok and is the Chairman of the LombokCare Foundation. This is a non-government organisation that addresses issues on inclusivity, diversity and living with disability. The foundation runs projects for children, families and the wider community, and they include rehabilitation programs, education services and advocacy programs.

Naturally, music and the arts play a role in this work, as therapy and as a way to strengthen community engagement.

The Band Apip’s band is an important part of the project. He works with professional Lombok musicians: Beby (keyboardist); Kacip (guitarist); Jack (bassist); and Apel (drummer). They are all members of well-known bands who perform at various events and venues in Lombok. Their individual contributions, and those of various background supporting musicians, have produced a unique and distinctive reggae style for Sound Of Magic Island.

The Album Their first album is appropriately named. Welcome to Magic Island has eight tracks, all written by Apip and tracing his life experiences in Lombok.

“The music has a particular Lombok feel”, says Apip. “And in this album, I can express all my feelings about love, peace, life’s problems, and its natural beauty. One of my songs, ‘The Warriors’, for example, is intended to honour and appreciate humanitarian fighters who tirelessly help others in various disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, Covid, war, and floods.”

“We had a showcase event recently to launch the album.

There were 100 invited people from various circles— musicians, artists, poets, painters, professionals, media.

They really appreciated and enjoyed the musical presentation. The event was held in conjunction with the LombokCare Music Charity Program, whose aim is to raise funds to support children with disabilities, and run inclusion programs.”

The Future We asked Apip about the plans and projects that lie ahead.

“In the short-term, Sound of Magic Island will go on a mini tour, taking the first album around Lombok Island and West Nusa Tenggara Province. To be able to do that, we are currently looking for cooperation with various parties so that the plan can work out as expected.”

“The long-term plan is to be invited to perform at reggae, and other, music events around Indonesia and abroad.”

As we stepped onto the vibrant island of Gili Air, where we had decided to do a photo shoot, we were welcomed by the cheerful vibes. The island was full of life—kid’s playing near the shore, locals riding bikes and even a local passing by on horseback.

We continued walking, soaking it all in to find the best spots to shoot.

And then, we stumbled upon this path covered in pink flowers. The locals call them “kembang kertas”, and they looked mesmerising and just exquisite as a photo backdrop.

We knew we had to shoot here—with the model standing in the front and the flowers swaying behind her, the light hitting just right we started clicking away.

Everything about that day felt effortless—the people, the energy, and the island itself.

Gili Air just has that magic.

Chef Komang Alus—Olive Bar & Restaurant, Royal Avila Boutique Resort

A Clear Choice of Career

C

hef Komang Alus grew up in Bali and soon came to a firm decision about the career path he would take. After his studies and further training as a chef, he moved to Lombok in 2022.

He spoke with mylombok about his experiences and the things he enjoys most about his work.

When did you first become interested in becoming a chef?

After I finished high school, I studied for two years at the Sekolah Pariwisata (School of Tourism) in Bali. The school teaches a little bit about all kinds of jobs in tourism and it was while I was learning about being a chef that I decided it was the career I wanted. I found that I really enjoyed cooking and knew it would be good for my future. And one day I would like to open my own restaurant.

My father is a chef, and I grew up around food and cooking, so I followed in my father’s footsteps. My family was happy with my choice; that’s what they wanted for me. Most of my friends are chefs, too and they’ve been successful. All these played an important part in my decision.

Tell us something about your career so far.

After I graduated, I spent four years training in the kitchens at the Pullman Bali Legian. When I first came to Lombok, I worked as a commis chef at the Katamaran Hotel for two years. Then I moved to the Royal Avila Boutique Resort where I am currently working in the Olive Bar & Restaurant.

I was first employed as chef de partie and then moved up to executive sous chef. I’ve been in this position for almost a year.

How would you describe your cooking style?

I like to cook Western, Indonesian and other Asian dishes, so I suppose I would describe it as Asian Fusion. This is the basis for the menu at the restaurant.

Which dish do you most enjoy cooking?

I like to cook a dish called ‘Hanging Tender Steak’, which is usually served with broccoli and a choice of sauces.

The guests ask for it to be cooked differently and I like the challenge—cooking it rare, medium-rare, etc.

Which dish do you think is the guests’ favourite?

I would say the Crispy Duck is a favourite. Guests like this dish because of its special flavour. I soak the duck in brine for 24 hours before cooking it; this gives it a softer texture, and it’s extra tasty, especially as I cook it using coconut water. As a garnish, I use crispy galangal, which is a spicy root vegetable that’s closely related to ginger and turmeric.

Galangal is an ingredient I really like to use in my cooking.

I love the flavour. Not many people can cook it well.

What are your ‘must have’ kitchen gadgets?

A good pan—because it makes it easier to make flambé dishes. And the wok—because I like that style of cooking.

What do you like the most about your job?

The team I work with. They are easy to get along and communicate with, and they can follow my lead. Apart from that, my favourite part of the job is making dressings, sauces and garnishes.

Which foods do you really like, or don’t like, to eat?

I really like Sate Tanjung. It’s a traditional Lombok dish made with fresh fish, coconut milk and spices, and grilled on sate sticks. We don’t have the same flavours in Bali.

Plecing kangkung is my least favourite dish. It is made of spinach leaves, shallots, and lots of chilli. It is very popular but too spicy for me.

Are you the cook at home?

No, my wife is! She cooks all the meals in our house.

Apart from creating delicious food, what are the most important qualities a successful chef must have?

Loyalty and good leadership are very important. A chef must be able to maintain the food cost while producing a consistent result. Obviously, cleanliness and hygiene are essentials.

Who is your favourite celebrity chef?

I like Gordon Ramsay. He is always firm and consistent in the kitchen, and I like the way he plates his food.

What’s the biggest challenge?

Managing food costs and also maintaining consistency in the taste of the dishes. That can be challenging.

Do you have any tips for beginner chefs?

These are the most important ones: • Wake up early in the morning.

• Always ask questions.

• Be disciplined.

• Follow the instructions from the head chef.

• And always—taste the food before serving it.

What do you like most about living and working in Lombok?

Lots of things. There’s not too much traffic; the cost of living is reasonable; it’s quiet and the lifestyle is good. Also, my family lives here and most of the people are friendly.

If you hadn’t become a chef, what do you think you would be doing right now?

Lombok Crispy Duck Ingredients

Method

• 230 gr local duck (leg and thigh) • 35 gr Lombok water spinach • 30 gr sambal ijo (green chili) • 30 gr sambal kecap (sweet chili sauce) • 15 gr Serundeng galangal • 30 gr local cucumber • 10 gr Emping crackers • 3 gr Kaffir lime • 30 gr chopped fried onions • 10 gr Taliwang paste

1. Season the duck with spices and salt until it becomes tender.

2. Marinate the duck in brine for 24 hours.

3. Cook it in yellow spices, coconut water, grated galangal, lemongrass, and Kaffir lime. Braise it for 1 hour and let rest for 15 minutes with the stove turned off to allow the flavours to fully absorb.

4. Plate the duck with the crackers and cucumber as garnish.

Hanging Tender Steak Ingredients

Method

• 200 gr hanging tenderloin • 80 gr broccoli • 60 gr mushroom sauce • 30 gr sambal kecap (sweet chili sauce) • 2 gr mixed microgreens • 2 ml green oil • 3 gr sea salt • 3 gr black pepper

1. Season the hanging tenderloin with salt and pepper.

2. Sear it on a sizzling hot pan until the surface is caramelised.

3. Baste it with butter, garlic, and thyme for 2 minutes.

4. Transfer to the oven and cook to the desired level of doneness.

5. Serve it on a plate with a choice of two sauces.

Give the Green Light to Pandan

P

andan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is a tropical plant also known as screw pine. It is an ancient plant, believed to have originated in the Maluku Islands in the eastern region of Indonesia. The plant, which is now fully domesticated and propagated only from cuttings, grows from the ground and has long strap-like leaves, in bunches, from which the pandan juice can be squeezed.

The rice is often wrapped in banana leaves and served with sambal (a thick, chilli-based sauce), anchovies, and boiled eggs.

Its taste suggests a combination of grass and vanilla—it is often called ‘the vanilla of the East’—with a hint of subtle floral or nutty flavours. In Indonesian, and in most Southeast and South Asian cooking, pandan is a staple ingredient for its colour and its flavour. It’s used in many rice dishes, and it adds its bright-green colouring to desserts, cocktails, and other beverages.

Coconut curry. The creamy texture and the distinctive coconut flavours are enhanced even more when the curry is simmered with fresh pandan leaves.

COOKING WITH PANDAN Some popular dishes featuring pandan are: Nasi lemak. This is a fragrant rice dish cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves, and popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. It has a rich, creamy texture, which is suggested by its name (the Malay words nasi lemak means ‘fat rice’).

Pandan chicken or fish. Chicken pieces or fillets of white fish, when wrapped and baked in pandan leaves, take on an additional delicate flavour and aroma.

Pandan is particularly popular in sweet treats: • Kaya—a sweet, creamy spread or custard, made with coconut cream, eggs, and sugar. A delicious (and more colourful) variation (nyonya kaya) is made with pandan leaves. It is commonly used as a topping or filling for toasted bread with butter (kaya toast).

• Kaya bun—a soft milk bun, made using pandan-infused milk and filled with nyonya kaya.

• Klepon—sweet rice balls, made from sticky rice flour, filled with palm sugar, coloured with pandan extract, and then coated in grated coconut.

• Dadar gulung—bright green pandan-flavoured pancakes, made from rice flour and rolled up with a grated coconut and palm sugar filling.

• Kue serimuka—a layered slice with glutinous ‘sticky’ rice on the bottom and pandan custard on top. It is very popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

• Pandan cake—a light, fluffy (and bright green) sponge cake, flavoured with pandan juice.

• Pandan honeycomb cake—made with a thick, green (of course), syrup-like pandan extract. It has a unique texture and appearance.

As an interesting variation, you’ll often find traditionally European sweets, gelato, panna cotta and pastéis de nata (Portuguese egg tarts) that feature pandan. It’s even making its way into the glazing on doughnuts.

BEVERAGES Pandan leaves add colour and interest to all sorts of drinks: Pandan juice. Fresh pandan leaves, blended with water and mixed with sugar and lime, make a refreshing drink.

Pandan ‘tea’. Fresh pandan leaves can be boiled and sometimes sweetened with sugar or honey. They make a pleasant and soothing infusion, with a unique flavour.

Pandan iced ‘mocktail’. You can also serve pandan ‘tea’ as a refreshing iced drink. It goes beautifully with mango, banana, watermelon or your favourite tropical fruit.

Pandan bubble tea. The pandan flavouring is a mixture of condensed milk, evaporated milk, fresh pandan leaf and pandan extract, which is left to infuse overnight. Make the tea as usual, then add the tapioca pearls, ice and pandan flavouring.

Pandan latte. Whisk together pandan syrup and strong coffee, then add milk and sugar, as usual. It’s a latte with a difference.

Pandan gin. Boutique gin distillers are experimenting with pandan leaves (paired with coconut and kaffir limes) as flavourings. Sounds good!

AND THERE’S MORE...

Apart from its culinary uses, pandan has cultural importance in Indonesia. It symbolizes prosperity and freshness and is often used in traditional ceremonies and offerings.

The Tenganan people of Bali used dried pandan leaves to make ‘clubs’, used in the perang pandan (pandan battle), a war dance and ritual combat, meant to honour their gods and therefore be granted a good rice harvest. This ancient traditional event is still staged today.

Dried pandan leaves can also be woven (a process known as pandan wicker) to produce a pliable and durable material. It is used to make mats, baskets, bags and bowls.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF PANDAN Although it is not used as a health food, pandan is claimed to be beneficial in boosting the immune system and the metabolism. Because of its dietary fibre content, it might also support digestive wellbeing.

Some people have found that rubbing pandan oil into the skin relieves pain in joints and muscles. You should discuss these claims with a medical practitioner.

Generally speaking, pandan leaves do not produce negative side effects when taken in moderation.

People with kidney problems, however, should not eat pandan regularly, as it can cause nausea and indigestion and could affect kidney health.

The growing popularity of pandan might give an extra meaning to ‘going green’.

spas and everything else that makes a major trip worthwhile and often life changing. In short, when visitors talk about saving five or ten bucks—in context of a much larger holiday expense—it makes me pause and think: how I can help spread the idea of generosity instead?

Case in point: Living and owning a business in Lombok for many years, I learned that generosity is a big part of my responsibility as a member of this community; to be as generous as possible in an authentic attempt to improve the lives of the people I employ, as well as the experience of our guests.

CHOOSING GENEROSITY

A

few weeks ago, I saw an interesting video of a traveler discussing the rules of “bargaining” when visiting developing nations. Instead of haggling for a lower price, he says, allow yourself to happily get “ripped off.” He likened this concept—simply paying full price or even a bit more—to an act of generosity that elevates the travel experience from a transaction into a moment of shared joy. He says: Instead of feeling like you’re getting taken advantage of, recognize hard work, craftsmanship or effort, pay full price and everybody’s happy. Yourself included.

This is an idea I share with guests as I often overhear visitors talk about prices across Indonesia. Some travelers boast about how they bargained down a driver. Or brag how they got a t-shirt or a craft for lower than the seller asked. Or simply revel in their quest to get more for less.

While everyone loves getting a deal from time to time, it’s difficult hearing about local workers earning less when many travelers arrive here with so much more. The privilege to afford to fly here, spend money on hotels, meals, tours,

For our staff, this generosity begins with developing talented people – like our waiters, bartenders and cooks – to become better than when they started. It’s encouraging staff to learn new things in a safe environment. It’s being patient and giving everyone the chances they deserve. It, of course, means paying a fair wage, adjusted for how much each staff member continues to improve. I am convinced that this level of multi-faceted generosity has resulted in Klub Kembali building a strong team committed to doing a good job and creating a joyful experience for all.

Obat Sasak This month’s cocktail was created as one of the innovation challenges I often give to our bar team—our moment of team generosity where we agree there are “no bad ideas” and we all get to explore in a safe space.

For this challenge, I asked the bartenders to experiment with new cocktail recipes using kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), a condiment used in many Lombok dishes. The top cocktail was “Obat Sasak,” created by our bartender Jalal.

“Obat Sasak” means “Sasak Medicine.” The Sasak people are indigenous to Lombok and they use all the cocktail’s ingredients—except rum—as a medicine when they feel unwell. Hope it makes you feel great next time we welcome you back to Klub Kembali!

“Obat Sasak” Cocktail Recipe 1. Fill shaker with: • 3 slices fresh ginger • 2 tsp brown sugar • 3 slices lime 2. Muddle to bring out the juices of the ginger and lime 3. Add to shaker: • 1 ½ oz Aged Manta Dark Rum • 1 bar spoon kecap manis • Ice cubes 4. Shake 5. Double strain into small Coupe Glass 6. Garnish with a slice of fresh ginger Note We use Indonesian Manta Dark Rum aged in our Klub Kembali oak barrels. You can replace with any aged dark rum you can find. Cheers!

hilippe Pirson is the driving force behind 7Palms Lombok. He was born and grew up in the south of Holland. Aged just 18, he decided to venture further.

Soon he was selling carpets in Berlin, just after the wall had come down. Then, after several years working in hospitality back in Holland, his travels took him all over the world.

Eventually landing in Thailand he moved once again into hospitality. He owned a dive resort and hotel on the island of Koh Chang, Thailand, where he lived and worked for 9 years. After a brief stay in his home country, he headed off again. He went to Bali for a holiday and decided to stay.

Four years later, a holiday to Lombok ended the same way.

Philippe spoke with mylombok recently about how that visit changed his life.

How were you inspired to get started in property development?

I was on holiday in Lombok and early one morning, about 6am, I took a walk along Selong Belanak beach. Right then and there, I decided that’s where I wanted to live.

When I first moved to Lombok, my original idea was to build a house with three rooms, so my partner could rent out the rooms and have something to manage.

But then my business mind popped open and I realised that Lombok was just starting out in terms of property, building and developments, and that I could jump on this train. I decided to find the right plot of land to follow up on my idea of a development project in Lombok.

Have you had any particular influences—people who have inspired you?

My father certainly influenced me. He trained me the hard way about life. He always said, ‘Take nothing for granted’.

From my father I learned the ways of life and the ways of business.

How did the concept for 7Palms come about? Tell us something about its history.

The concept began with a vision. When I bought the plot of land in Torok I had a vision of 5 villas on the lower level, 4 villas in the middle and 3 villas on the upper level. I could see the layout in front of my eyes. There would be two roads, and palm trees, which is partly where the name came from.

I wanted a short, strong international name: 7Palms—The Jewel of Lombok, which was conceived by my partner, Rosita.

What has been your proudest moment?

It was on 17 November 2024. At exactly 4pm, the last paint job (on the BBQ) was completed! Then it was time to launch 7Palms in Torok. At 5pm, the guests started to arrive, and I watched people walking around and viewing the three screens that showed the three projects in different areas of South Lombok. It made me very proud! And being able to pull this off in one of the more complicated areas of Lombok gave me a real sense of accomplishment.

Tell us more about the project.

There will be twelve villas. Five are 2-bedrooom villas, each with a private pool; four have 3 bedrooms, also with a pool.

On the upper level, there are three premium 3-bedroom villas, with a sea view and a large pool terrace.

They are all high-quality, luxury villas, which we can offer at an affordable price. They also have custom made furnishings.

The timeline for completion of all villas is up to 15 months.

The project is about freedom—freedom from pollution and traffic. Instead there are rice fields, sea, and mountain views, fresh air, and clean white beaches. The villas are located on the border of the prestigious development— Samara Bay—and only two or three minutes from the white sands of Torok beach.

The development at Torok will mainly attract those who will particularly appreciate freedom and peace—young families with children or retirees.

The development is special because it is unique in every aspect. The construction is very strong and comes with a guarantee of 2 or 3 years. We offer an 80-year leasehold.

We also handle everything related to the project—the building and all the management goes through us.

We aim for luxury, but also for something different and innovative. This is obvious in the villas’ features; 7Palms stands for something different from the rest.

What would you say are the biggest challenges and obstacles you have to face?

Very simply this: the biggest challenge is to find motivated and skilled people. There are two basic options: employ workers from Bali; or find workers from among the local people and then teach and guide them.

For me, teaching and guiding local workers is my choice.

I want to provide them with a future; that’s why I am here.

At the planning stage, the first difficulty was that I started with the wrong contractor. There were also a few locals who presented obstacles at one time. It happens!

After that, I decided to do everything myself, and I found the right contractor to complete the first villa. From something negative something positive always comes!

What would be a typical working day for you?

I wake up at about 4:30am and go to the beach to exercise and swim. Then I work from 8am until 5pm. I usually end my day with a cold refreshing beer or crisp glass of wine at either Laut Biru—the best place for a classic sunset drink showcasing breathtaking sunsets on Selong Belanak beach —or Amber, a beach resort close by to 7Palms.

In my head, I work 24 hours a day; it’s a non-stop process.

Besides, I’m a perfectionist and, as the founder and leader, I’m trying to lift the whole group up to a better future.

I also like to help the local people. Often, they just need guidance, and by working together we can build up this area. My goal is to make a future together with my staff. We are like one big family.

I want nice, happy, smiling people around me. I really enjoy that.

What I also love about Lombok is the diversity of nature, its white beaches, waterfalls, and ancient coconut trees.

What plans and projects do you have for the future?

When I became a developer, I saw the future of 7Palms. I want to see the 7Palms sign in different areas, each with a unique project.

In Selong Belanak we are building 4 luxury ‘double-pool’ villas. They are more ‘rustic’—made from lighter stone and wood—and positioned in the rice fields so you sit on your roof top looking over them and enjoying mountain views. A waterfall goes from one pool to another.

In Kuta, the land price is going up and up. We bought at the bypass, outside of the hustle and bustle of Kuta, up on the hill where you can hear the birds.

What do you enjoy most about your work and about living in Lombok?

Normally I buy property. This is my first ever project in property development. When you have never done something before in your life but you succeed, it’s new and exciting. When you make something from nothing and complete your goal, it’s great! You literally have gold in front of your nose. Obviously, I enjoy that.

I also enjoy the idea of creating a new company in what was an unknown place for me and doing it with the local people—especially when everyone said it wasn’t possible.

For me ‘no’ is not an option; you can always find a ‘yes’.

‘Giving up’ is not in my dictionary, “I don’t compromise on anything—not on quality, people or money. I always go for the best!”. The result of this can be seen with my 7Palms project in Torok, Lombok—50% of the project has been sold in 12 weeks after launching our show model on 17th November 2024. When I succeed it is always a nice feeling.

There will be 1- and 2-bedroom villas on different levels, with a roof top pool with a glass bottom and water falling down into a jacuzzi. It’s a project that overlooks the rice fields and mountains near Kuta.

How do you see Lombok’s future in terms of tourism and developments such as your projects?

Lombok is just starting. The future is here and it’s much better and much more promising than people might think.

To be a part of the development of this beautiful place is a great thing. I have some unique projects in my head and lots of energy to realise them for the future of Lombok.

mylombok Street Food Festival at Mandalika Bazaar, Kuta Four days of pure entertainment—music, food, drinks, shows, and stalls brought the Mandalika Bazaar area to life. This event took place from 25th to 28th Dec and was hosted by ITDC and mylombok. Experience the best of Lombok with these recommended highlights and hidden gems: Senggigi and The West Coast Senggigi, just a short drive from the island capital Mataram is Lombok’s premier beach resort, extending along a series of sweeping bays. The main beach strip is fringed by a wide expanse of sand framed nightly by spectacular ocean sunsets. It is a fairly spread out beach town that rarely feels overcrowded yet there is a broad variety of places to stay, eat and socialise. Gili Islands A trio of tiny tropical islands off the northwest coast, known simply as ‘the Gilis’ are the go-to place for laid-back island life and the simple pleasures of sun, sea and superb scuba diving. Each of these three islands has its own distinctive atmosphere; the smallest is Gili Meno, a peaceful tropical island haven with few distractions other than deserted white sand beaches and a couple of chilled out beach bars. Legendary ‘party island’ Gili Trawangan is largest and most cosmopolitan of the Gili Islands with no shortage of swanky boutique villas, diverse dining and plenty of action after dark. Gili Air, located closest to the Lombok mainland, sits somewhere in the middle of these two extremes and has the most authentic local atmosphere. The enduring appeal of the Gili Islands is the refreshing absence of any motorised transport making for a pleasant alternative to Bali’s congested beach resorts. Scuba diving is still the main draw and it is one of Asia’s top spots to learn the basics and get qualified. For landlubbers, there are few better places to get horizontal on a tropical beach and soak up the unique island vibe.

Kuta and South Lombok Like its namesake in Bali, Kuta Lombok is synonymous with world-class waves but thankfully without the hassle of 24/7 traffic and infuriating beach hawkers. In fact, Lombok’s south coast surf breaks are more than a match for the best in Bali, and savvy surfers are heading here to enjoy miles of uncrowded, adrenaline-fuelled waves.

Kuta, invitingly close to Lombok’s new international airport, is the main tourist hub yet remains a fairly tranquil tropical haven favoured by both surfers and adventurous families. It makes for a great base for exploring the rugged southern coastline dotted with numerous breathtaking beaches. Scenic highlights include up-andcoming Tanjung A’an, Gerupak and isolated Ekas Bay.

The Southwest Lombok’s ruggedly beautiful southwest peninsular is largely unexplored by visitors but is now getting serious recognition with the discovery of superb offshore scuba diving and miles of deserted beaches.

The main gateway is Sekotong Bay, located just south of Lombok’s main ferry port Lembar and is the jumping off point for Lombok’s ‘Secret Gilis.’ These small offshore islands feature pristine coral reefs and idyllic tropical beaches for a real castaway experience. Heading south, the coastal road winds its way past tiny fishing communities and secluded bays all the way to the tip of the peninsular where the legendary surf breaks of Bangko Bangko (Desert Point) are found — rated among the best in the world.

Mount Rinjani For an alternative to surf, scuba and sandy beaches, a trek up the immense Rinjani volcano is hard to beat. At over 3,700 meters, this is Indonesia’s second highest volcano and makes for challenging 3–4 day trek but the views are definitely worth all the effort. The mountain dominates much of north Lombok and the caldera alone covers a mind-boggling 50 square kilometres. Most climbers only go as far as the crater rim which offers vertigo-inducing views down into the volcanic lake but the extra effort to get to the summit will be rewarded with views as far as Java and eastwards across to the island of Sumbawa. If this all sounds too arduous for comfort, the mountain’s foothills offer a wealth of leisurely hiking opportunities. Head to Senaru village for easy-going walks through remote weaving villages and dense jungle to uncover a succession of scenic waterfalls.
