Justee College School of Nursing: A School of People for People Who Want to Make a Difference By Gina Zuk

Learning is a lifelong process, and that fact becomes more apparent when we begin to contemplate career choices. What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want to learn? Maybe it's time for you to fi nd out more about Justee College School of Nursing.

Justee College School of Nursing offers effective, affordable training that is educational, practical, and convenient. Campus Director and Assistant Director of Nursing, Jonathan Gluck, RN, describes the school as, “A school of people for people who want to make a difference.” Jonathan is one of those people.

Jonathan began his career as a fi refi ghter and paramedic, which, naturally, led him to pursuing his current career in nursing. During this time, Jonathan also taught in various capacities, which inspired him to open his own school.

The Justee College School of Nursing began when Jonathan teamed up with Dr. Evens St. Juste, a graduate of the University of Health and Science of Antigua who now serves as the founder and president of the school. Dr. St. Juste and Jonathan share the same vision for the school: to offer a medical establishment that educates students on how to be exemplary professionals and caring individuals. After two plus years of incredible dedication in planning and development, the two men are offi cially ready to open the school’s doors to new students.

Justee College School of Nursing is governed by the Florida Board of Nursing and the Commission for Independent Education (CIE), which is responsible for the licensure of independent schools, colleges, and universities in Florida. The school will open with its 12-month, 1,350-hour licensed practical nurse (LPN) program in October, with plans for the 24-month, 1,545-hour registered nurse (RN) program to begin in January. Students who have completed the application process and passed the entrance exam and background check will have the option to take day and/or evening classes running from 7:30AM until 11:00 PM on Mondays through Thursdays. The nursing program classes are all taken on-site at Justee College; however, the general education classes, such as the required Mathematics and English courses, are offered online.

The fi rst day of class in Justee College School of Nursing’s new, state-of-the-art 5,000 sq. ft. facility is October 31st. The school has three classrooms and one lab, which is broken into three separate areas — intensive therapy/ emergency room, medical surgery, and a pediatric unit.

There is also a library, meeting and lunch rooms, and testing facility. Jonathan states, “The school has a mannequin that talks, provides lung sounds, winks, cries, etc. It simulates a real clinical scenario.”

Students at Justee College will simultaneously be enrolled in educational lectures and labs, as well as undergo clinical experiences. The clinical rotations can

take place in nursing homes, surgical centers, assisted living facilities, pediatric sites, and hospitals.

What makes Justee College School of Nursing so special is its dedicated, professional faculty members who are committed to teaching people how to learn. Each cohort will have a maximum capacity of 25 students, which allows the faculty at Justee to provide a personalized educational experience for their students. In fact, the school even has a supportive mentoring program in place that assists students with everything from honing study skills to managing the clinical experience.

Members of the medical faculty at Justee College of Nursing— including Julie Diane, RN, Jonathan, and Dr. St. Juste — are all assigned a student. Each of the instructors is happy to support students throughout their entire educational experiences. “We have worked very closely with the CIE to create this curriculum. One of the big things that Dr. St. Juste and I embodied is that nursing school is about people because nursing is about people,” explains Jonathan. He goes on to emphasize, “We are small and personal and we want to maintain that as we grow.”

In addition to the medical faculty, the school also employs an Admissions Counselor, Camille Alteme, and a Program Director, Michelle Edwards, who oversees all aspects of the nursing program. Ms. Alteme will assist students through the admissions process, which can include credit transfers, before Jonathan or Ms. Edwards begin assisting with the actual course selection.

It is important to Jonathan and Dr. St. Juste to be part of our community, so they are reaching out to churches, senior centers, schools, etc. to offer a free lecture on safety. This 1-hour lecture will include information on recognizing the signs of choking, stroke, and CPR emergencies. “We believe education is power. If you empower people, we will become a better community,” affi rms Jonathan.

Nurses are the heart of healthcare. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for registered nurses will grow 9% from 2020 to 2030, accounting for almost 200,000 job openings each year over the next decade! Let the school of people at Justee College School of Nursing help guide you on the right path to an amazing, rewarding career that will allow you to make a difference.
