Well, I suppose I’ve had plenty of dinners where the only thing that is served are my words, and I am just about to sit down to another. In my last article I promised I would not do another movie review, that my reviews are less than once a year, if that, and besides, who am I to decide what is good and what is not. But, like eating my words, here goes another full plate.

I rented the movie ELVIS, starring among others, Austin Butler as Elvis, and Tom Hanks as Colonel Parker, his manager. As a teenager during the era that Elvis came to be, I was taken by his talents, not so much obsessed like the screaming teen girls that swooned and fainted every time he came onstage, but still, mysti ed by his ability to command a presence and move his body the way he did. All I knew about him was nothing more than a good looking man with a great voice, (okay, and great body).

ere are plenty of movies about Elvis, but none that I know of that were told from the narration of Colonel Parker, the man who discovered him, put him in the spotlight, and was also hated by many for allegedly extorting much of the funds. I came to discover exactly how poor his family was, living in a shanty in a less privileged neighborhood, most of whom were African American folks. Elvis quickly learned from them, their spirituality, and their music, and how they allowed the music to dictate their movements. It was real and genuine, and he quickly took on those qualities. Some might say he stole their music, but the movie goes on to show that he never took anything that he wasn’t given, and always recognized his humble beginnings and the folks he called his friends.

I was also astounded to realize the co-dependent relationship Elvis had with his hard-to-please mother, and his kind, but passive father, and how he singlehandedly, attempted to take on the nancial responsibilities of just about everyone he came in contact with. He loved his wife and daughter dearly, but didn’t put them rst, which he regretted. To me, he was a good guy, who searched for love his entire life, and then, it took everything from him and nally killed him. Not that he didn’t have the responsibility of taking better care of himself, but you will come to love and care for him for who he was, a mere mortal man, if you don’t already.

A word about the actors. Austin Butler said in an interview he practiced for 8 months before he read for the part, and then for another two years before he actually starred in the movie. To say he was fantastic might be the understatement of the year, and Tom Hanks, well, who doesn’t love Tom Hanks in everything he plays. I’m going out on a limb and for what its worth, I think this movie will get the Academy Award for best picture, Best Actor to Butler, and Best Supporting Actor to Hanks. But then again, you’ll have to decide for yourself, a er you see one of the best lms in quite a while!
